Just don't be mislead by the trailers. It is absolutely not a gangster flick in the traditional sense.

Yeah the trailers kinda gave me mixed feelings. I'm not huge on gangster films so maybe that'll work to my benefit.

A Most Violent Year was one of my favorite films of the year. I adore Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac is fast becoming one of my favorite actors.

The trailer was very misleading. A Most Violent Year is not really a gangster film. It has elements of that, but it's really about the American Dream and family. It's a very slow film, but I found it very gripping, mainly because of the fantastic acting performances.

Cronenberg is in my personal top 5 but after Cosmopolis I've lost so much faith in him.
I miss the old Cronenberg.

I really enjoyed it. Not much happened plot-wise but I was still captivated by these messed-up, self-absorbed characters (Julianne Moore does a really great job portraying a cringe-worthy character). The dialogue was really good as well, as was the satire of Hollywood. But the (big) negative is that it's got a little too much going on for it and, as a result, not everything makes sense. It's part satire, part psychological, part ghost story, part exploration of familial relationships. It's especially frustrating because each piece is really good, but when thrown together it all feels a little jumbled.

The only other Cronenberg I've seen in The Fly, but your comments about missing the "old" one seem to be echoed by a lot of people.

The 'old Cronenberg' is definitely something to cherish. If you want a film to help you further explore his filmography, I'd suggest either Scanners or Videodrome. The latter is the consummate Cronenberg, full of body horror and meta physical mayhem.

I'm like, 98.5% sure you'll like it. It's pretty much a love letter to black & white expressionist films. It falters in many ways, but it gets massive points for it's unabashedly indie spirit and unique, deadpan romantic angle with a splash of supernatural.
