Seems to me that SONY is taking a lot of heat for pulling this film when in reality they had absolutely no choice. The real decision was made by the firms that control somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-85% of the theaters. What choice did Sony have? Open the film wit the remaining 15% of theaters across the country? Granted, I think it was poor judgement in green lighting the film in the first place, but that's because I don't find Franco or Rogen's films in general to be very funny or in any kind of good taste, but that of course is just my opinion.

If you're going to fault anyone for the film being pulled its the theater owners that are to blame, not Sony IMHO. That being said, I'm sure some heads are rolling in the Sony IT department!!! LOL Somebody sure forgot to zip their fly!!! LOL

It's absolutely Sony's fault. They should have released it ANYWHERE. Even one theater.

We need to send in a team and assassinate that prick.

A big difference between a puppet and an actor with a striking human resemblence to a real leader of a real country who's name is the same as the real leader. If Russia made a comedy about two numbskull stoners (if they are that lol) assassinating Barrack Obama or George Bush while they were in office, I think a lot of America would be outraged ("Those red commie bastards!"). Don't agree with pulling the movie but still I said this movie was in poor taste from the get go. Doesn't help America and other parts of the world laughed at him when he was understandably upset at the premise of the film. I'm reminded of Lee Adama when defending Baltar and the double standards placed on Baltar by everyone else, and he says, "It's okay (that we're punishing him, making an example of him) because we just don't like him very much."

The movie being pulled is the thing I'm least upset about. Hope they barely make any money back. Idiots.
This. Except I think it's a shame they wasted so much money on this. It could have gone to something much better. They never should have greenlit the movie in the first place. I don't know what they were thinking.

I feel like America in general has this superior attitude, and that we're untouchable. It's not a good combination to have. Yes it might just be a comedic movie, but personally I don't think it reflects well on us. I'm not surprised if he found it as a threat. I'm sure America would take it as a threat if North Korea released a film about Obama.

That said, had they released it, I highly doubt it would have made a lot of money, and might of been forgotten fairly quickly. But now that they pulled it it's getting all this media attention and people are all in uproar about it. Personally I think it's kind of ridiculous. No offense meant to anyone here.

Financially it didn't seem to make sense with so many distributors pullling out. I'm sure they will try and relaunch this in someway to recoup their investment.

Many movies are made in poor taste. At the end everyone (Actors, movie producers) are wanting money,...and as much $$ as they can get their hands on.

That being said not showing this movie just sets a bad precedent. It's called freedom of speech. Deal with it North Korea, and grow a pair of hairy balls. Your egos are too sensitive and fragile and you feel threatened by this movie because you know that your leadership of nutjobs are barely holding your country together.

They've been hacked several times before by all kinds of low-grade jerks. The myth that Hollywood has got it all has always been the only thing that Hollywood has really got.

The problem, although this is not really news, is that communist censorship can at some point threaten real art as much as capitalist degeneracy does.

Expecting North Korea to follow the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is about as absurd as expecting Sony Pictures to distribute the movie for free just for the sake of maintaining their integrity. Duh; there's never been any honor among thieves. And freedom is not free. If you really want to teach the whole world that violence does not work, you have to send an army and beat it into them. Actually, there's been a precedent for quite a while. Catch-22.

Love this quote by Obama. Sums up my feelings perfectly:

“We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States, because if someone is able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they see a documentary that they don’t like or news reports that they don’t like. Or even worse, imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they don’t want to offend the sensibilities of somebody whose sensibilities probably need to be offended. That’s not who we are. That’s not what America’s about."

But just how much open power over the emerging global communications environment does our government unilaterally claim to authorize the policies of private corporations?

I believe there are some fine and notable examples of American journalists boldly telling controversial stories, but I also suspect that cases of self-censorship for fear of offending certain power-brokers, though not as showy as this one, already do as well occur in our proud nation these days. It is an important, though tricky, problem to consider, for sure.

    Oh count on it.

Censorship already exists in some form or another, that's why focus groups exist. Weed out what some consider overly offensive or in bad taste using a microcosm of the populace.

That's why this whole thing is such a mystery to me. Sony has corporate sized balls to have allowed the film to get to the point where it's on the cusp of of release. I wonder what the mind set of the execs was going into this.

This has nothing to do with whether or not The Interview was going to be a good movie or not. If it's not your cup of tea, fine. I will say this though, it doesn't have to be artsy fartsy to be good. It's a silly comedy and often times they can be pretty enjoyable. This is the End was a dumb comedy, but I loved it. I'm hearing a lot of people everywhere saying that the film shouldn't have been made because it was going to be crap anyway, not because of the subject matter, yet nobody is saying that about Annie or the countless other shitty films that come out every year.

Good or bad, this isn't about that. This is about a dictator telling us what we should do and that bothers me. If another country were to make a film about assassinating Obama, it wouldn't bother me. IT'S A FUCKING MOVIE! I can also guarantee you Obama wouldn't threaten to bomb every theater in the world either.

Also, Modern Warfare 3 had a mission where you had to assassinate Fidel Castro. That game sold billions of copies and nobody, including the Cuban government, said anything.

It is a new dawn. Future wars will be fought through the air and not using planes. It will be information, not bullets doing the damage. It's called Cyber Warfare and we lost the first battle.

It has certainly sent the price of the poster through the roof.

And I don't remember much outcry about the British movie "Death of a President" about ten years ago where they assassinated (the real) George W. Bush.

...Or in the case of projects like this, just research on the target audience. "Team America"-type consumers, let's call it.

Now, regardless of how business's transformed role has changed the landscape since the era of this nation's founders, the government legitimately could champion our ideals of freedom and equality to an extent by protecting fair commerce practices through prosecution when one company unethically pressures another, but that type of thing, in fact, is so run of the mill any more that it often passes practically unnoticed. Are we encouraging advancement in privacy protection? HAHAHA! Yeah, that's the top priority down at the NSA.

How are the Feds going to respond to this other state besides themselves illegitimately bullying a corporate entity with all of this absurd public outcry? Well, it would be a great opportunity to pass laws allowing more free spying on potential hackers. You know, could be anybody. Oh, yayyy...

Sony, Franco aND Rogen should have self censored here. I agree everything can be funny but not that everything should be made fun of. As civilised society we should know the difference. I make a lot of jokes in poor taste but I have no reach; this is a worldwide story. I don't know how they portrayed KJU in the Interview a that's the crux of if the movie is ignorant or just the premise.

Yeah, it's sensationalised news. Everyone is arguing different parts of the same problem. Nothing is going to change or be solved and in the end society won't progress, we'll probably just regress in spite of all the alarm about society regressing. Never saw shit about the CIA torturing people overseas on my Facebook trends, just half a dozen variations of The Interview news. Is this any different than Hearst freaking out and campaigning that Citizen Kane slandered him him as he tried to ban the movie and eventually succeeding in helping ruin Welles's career? Not really, except we don't even know North Korea had shit all to do with this, meaning we're hating on North Korea for possibly no reason right now. U.S. Officials say North Korea was responsible (kind of quickly and abjectly) but they also said Saddam had imaginary WMDs, too. A time line of freedoms of expression/speech in this story:

    - Franco/Rogen come up with an idea for a film called The Interview where two people try to assassinate Kim Jong Un on his own soil
    - Sony chooses to invest in it and promote it.
    - Kim Jong Un expresses his unhappiness and uneasiness with the film
    - Millions of people freely express how stupid KJU is for slagging freedom of expression while freely expressing himself.
    - Someone expresses their anger by hacking Sony and threatening theatres that show the movie
    - Sony uses their freedom to not promote the film and cancel the new york city premiere, while giving theatres the freedom to show the movie if they please
    - Thousands of theatres display their freedom by choosing not to show the movie, other choose to show the movie.
    - Millions of people freely express how freedom of expression is being hindered because everyone is freely expressing themselves about free expression
    - I freely express my laughter on this farce of a story and sip my coffee

I mean, people are executing cops in their squad cars in what might be a precursor to dozens of cop-centric hate crimes. That is much more important news.
