New acquisition from Alec.
Gifted to a famous reporter and journalist after he interviewed Tolkien in 1973. It is a 2nd edition of the India Paper Lord of the Rings. The 1st edition being 1969. Until this popped up there were only six 1st editions signed and one 2nd edition, published in 1972. This could well turn out to be one of the last books that Tolkien signed, as he passed away at the beginning of September 1973.
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
Amazing!

Holy wow... Amazing... Congrats, Alec
This collection never ceases to amaze.
Looking for Suntup Brother ARC and Suntup Seed ARC
Many thanks to you all for the comments and continued interest in Tolkien.
I was thrilled to find this and even more so when I started to gather a bit about the back story. Tolkien was usually giving away the one volume paperback to people who interacted with him and certainly not signed. This particular journalist must have impressed him (I apologise for not being able to disclose his name at present, however many of you will have heard of him as he worked for the BBC) to the extent that he sent a parcel to the BBC after the interview, which is the book you see now. I am trying to determine from the reporter when the interview was completed as it could be one of the last books he signed. Tolkien passed away at the beginning of September 1973. Exactly the year this interview took place. His signature never fails to impress me as it varied little through the years (1937 - 1973). Stephen King went through a period of producing a delightful signature, I feel it such a shame that it somehow faded to almost a scrawl.
Should I learn more I will certainly break the news here.
Thank you as always to Simon. Sadly it looks like our pre Christmas meeting is in jeopardy thanks to another complete lock down.
It is a wonderful signature and as you say remarkably consistent.
Great book and story.
That is amazing Alec. I just can not believe your Tolkien collection. It is breathtaking.

Thank you to Alan, Brian, Frank, Jon and Mike for your comments.
All of them very much appreciated.
My apologies that at present it is all Tolkien, however this may seem unusual for book collectors, but I appear to be addicted!
Thank you Jon.
A real treat was yesterday, have a look at:
Sotheby’s - Ian Fleming on-line auction. (11th November).
The prices broke all records. Unbelievable!!
What a plan!!
Thank you Becca, I will keep it in mind. (Perhaps).
Love your idea of “gallery hanging”.
Hi Alec -- as I've said before, this is a beautiful additional to your collection. I hope your research returns positive results. Also, I just noticed that the "whoosh" below his signature reminds me of the Nike "whoosh."
John
