That is the original painting that Whelan did for the Plume trade paperback edition of DT1 - THE GUNSLINGER. The publishers did not like the background for some reason. So they superimposed the image of Roland from that painting onto the background from another painting (the one where Roland is looking out to sea). That hybrid image was used for the Plume trade paperback cover.

To my knowledge the image that you have provided has not been used as an illustration, per se. It was available as a limited edition print from Glass Onion and it appears in THE ART OF MICHAEL WHELAN.

On a french website that I manage, i've found the following illustrations
But i have no ideas of WHICH EDITION they are from, and what do they correspond to (i mean, is it for illustrating the chapters...?)

Does anyone have further informations?

Those are from the Plume US Trade Paperback Edition. Presumably, they are also done by Michael Whelan.

They are done by Michael Whelan and will appear in the new edition. At least most of them will.

Nerak : Can i ask something about the upcomming book?
I mean, i guess that it wont be right to publish the illustrations on this forum... or would it be ok? (obviously if the official website publish them, then it would be ok i guess, but what is your opinion?)
