So....what shelf does it go on.....my US S/L shelf, or my UK S/L shelf?
Ah, the quandaries faced by collectors when arranging their collections...

I bought a second copy of The Shining on DVD so I could have it on both my King shelf and my Kubrick shelf. Sad but true.

I was under the impression the Joyland limited was a UK product, so I would think that's where it would belong.

I bought one from England and one from the US. ONe should go on the US shelf and one should go on the UK shelf! the lower number belongs on the US shelf. Problem solved.

    Tomas at stephenkingollector.com disagrees.

    Also...if the word "color" in the novel is spelled C O L O R, instead of C O L O U R...does that make it a US S/L?

I believe King's other UK books use the "British spellings".

Did Tomas give his reasoning for determining the book as US vs UK despite the London-based publisher?

I had thought to myself this was a UK edition based on where it was published.

    I'd guess it's a later printing. I haven't checked the book stores.

I think they had to rush out a second printing because there were a lot of corrections to be made in the first printing.

As to whether the S/L should be on the UK shelf or not, since it was printed in London I say it's a UK edition, as is the paperback version of this book.

The country where the book is printed does not matter, as many are now printed in China. The publishers address should be the deciding factor.

Gauntlet has had several special editions that were printed in China.

Not all copies of the paperback are printed in the UK.

You have copies with "Printed in the US" and with "Printed and bound in Great Britain by CPI Group Ltd."

The US paperback is also slightly larger than the UK one.

Why does it matter where they contract out the actual printing of the pages? If it is a UK publishing company, doesn't that make it a UK edition?

In my opinion it does. But others may think differently. I'm glad this discussion is ongoing. I, too, was wrestling with where to shelve my copies of JOYLAND (US vs. UK).
