I saw The Descendants last week (we wanted to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but it was sold out, luckily The Descendants was there and we wanted to see that too) and I really enjoyed it. There's some really powerful acting here, especially with Clooney. It's George Clooney like we've never seen him. He's vulnerable and weak, which is the total opposite of the normal cool, suave George Clooney we are used to seeing.

Shailene Woodley, who plays Clooney's oldest daughter, is amazing too. She's a relative unknown. My sister tells me she's on a show called The Secret Life of an American Teenager and she's an awful actress on there. So she was really surprised by how good she was in The Descendants. It just goes to show that it's all about the writing/directing.

What's the date of the oscars? I imagine I have about 3 weeks t watch as many of these as possible. It seemed they released the list late this year. Very strange they chose 9 movies. Makes me wonder what the rest of the releases did wrong this year they couldn't throw one more movie a bone...not even A Dangerous Method or J Edgar or others, strange.

My early pick for best picture is: Hugo. I just thought it was a fantastical film that drew me in like not even The Descendants was able to. Hopefully I'll be seeing The Artist in theatres in a few weeks if it's still playing.

    I believe it's February 27th ... I'll verify.

I think the heavy favorite this year is The Artist, it seems to be picking up accolades everytime someone sneezes. Scorsese's 'Hugo' seems to be it's closest competitor.

If Tree of Life doesn't win best cinematogrophy I'll be never be to take the awards seriously.

Also, this was just brought to my attention - Demian Bihcir (born in Mexico City) was nominated for Best Actor ! This is the first time, at least to my recollection - that a latino has been nominated in this category. Even if he doesn't win, I'm glad he was nominated and I'm hoping this opens the doors for other talented latino/a actors.

Are there really only 2 original song nominees? And it has to go to The Muppets. I love it, and now that song will be stuck in my head the rest of the day

I'll be extrememly surprised if it doesn't as well.

I was on the fence about film, it didn't strike me as something I'd be interested in seeing, but the Golden Globes coverage had me wondering. I might decide to check it out.

I just watched the nominations video. I was really suprised that they chose to have 9 BP nominees. I was expecting between 5 and 7.

    A couple suprises for me:

    Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
    The Tree of Life

I haven't seen any of the nominees this year, so I'm excited to check them out now.
