Ryan: thanks a lot for understanding me again. It's not, of course that I thought anything happening in other countries should have been described, it's that whenever you read any Russian novel and almost any European, you get the feeling that the world is not limited by the country of the author's origin, while reading most American writings you get the feeling that the world = the USA, and the author has no faintest idea that anything else exists at all.
Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)

bears are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fran was never my favorite character either and I hate to defend her, but I think she is a bit more understandable if you consider her as a child of her time.
The Stand was originally written in 1978, and if Franny was 20, that would make her a child of the late fifties. Throw in the fact that her parents are older than your average parents, and she was probably raised more like a child of the '40's. This would explain why she put up with so much from her mother, and also why she didn't feel comfortable telling Harold off until she was sure she had a stronger man to...um NOT be owned by. I think she was much more of a damsel in distress type than a stand up for yourself women's rights kinda girl.
King re-worked and re-released The Stand in the 90's and did his best to make everything a bit more current, but to make Franny a modern day kinda girl would have changed her character just too much. Of course, that's just my opinion, and it's been a few years since I've read it, so be gentle with me.

PS, I always assumed "Rome Falls," was just a code word for them to release the plague everywhere...Like a reference to the fall of the Roman Empire?
The end says Fran passed half the immunity to her child? If so, how come Lucy's, or anyone elses, kids live through the plague?
The Tardis (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) duh!
just finished my reread of The Stand this morning. I read it in a record 17 days. I know I'm a slow reader.
anyhoo...It feels good to have it finished. It always gets me thinking about what I would do in that situation. If I had survived in my town, what would I do? Mostly I think of hitting up the pharmacy.

Yep, that definately would have happened!
The Tardis (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) duh!
^^ that's pretty wicked artwork - with the glaring exception of Mother Abigail, who is *words fail me* !
*EDI* I question myself - That is supposed to be Mother Abigal, I assume?
so a good poll question would be:
Where do you think belong in The Stand?
A) Colorado
B)Las Vegas
C)Ingoring dream and trying to survive
D)Dead (Captain Trips)
The Tardis (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) duh!
yes, it's good, and I have added it

thanks for adding the poll.
i voted colorado. if i survived captain trips (which i think i would have - god knows i dream enough for about 17 people) i couldn't just stand by and watch evil take over. i think i would be having the mother abigail dreams. at least that's what i hope anyway. i like to think i'm a good person. but really, i wonder how many people survived the plague and then ended up in las vegas when they thought they were good people?
I chose other. I think I would survive and hang around my town exploring the pharmacies for awhile. Then I would tell myself that I'm going to Boulder but I think I would end up somewhere like Cabo San Lucas.

I voted Dead. I've never been really lucky (and, actually, if I did survive, would that be called lucky?)

I just said Vegas. Jamaica wasn't an option

i am considering purchasing the original stand. I have already read the uncut edition and i think i'll enjoy the old version as well. really, i'm just interested in seeing the differences. so, i'm just gonna ask, do you guys think it's a good idea to get this book? is it even worth my time?
i'm also gonna get the original gunslinger, but i already know the answer to the above questions for THAT one i'll get here, so i'll just purchase it anyway. and, honestly, i'll probably just get the original stand just because i'm a completest whether the consensus here is positive or negative. i geuss i'm really just interested in what you all think about the relation between the original and uncut stand.
So it goes.
"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all. "
- Oscar Wilde
I enjoyed the uncut version better... just because I LOVE The Stand and the more information I can get the better!
Buddy, you think you look strong? You’re wearing a cape.
i have them both, and have read them both. i have read the uncut version more often though. i say go ahead with the purchase. the more books, the merrier.
I say hold out for a version of the Stand that is even more cut than the original.
ummm. perhaps you missed my previous post ryan?
here it is repeated: shutup ryan.
