Wow Clacke, seriously great photos. I'm a real Powers fan as well and have most all the limiteds (except the outreageously cool Last Call lettered from Charnel House.... simply unremittingly kick ass. I'm missing the the variants of Drawing of the Dark as well... mine is the darkest brown). The UK Robinson edition of Stanger Tides is also in my top favorite covers of all time, I'm glad Sub Press redid the US cover on their limited which I like a lot as well (wish it had more extra's though ). Do you like Blaylock and Jeter as well? This is such a cool thread, I'm sorry I only found out about it today. Mr. Flagg, I'm waiting with bated breath for your revelations... please reveal

Picked this up a few days ago. I consider it the "Holy Grail" of Tim Powers collecting. The Book is Last Call. 26 Lettered copies were Printed by Charnel House. Here is a description:
LAST CALL by Tim Powers lettered edition published by Charnel House!

This is considered by many to be the holy grail of small press horror collectors. It very very rarely comes up for sale and is felt by many collectors to be the most beautiful book published in the 20th century.

The tarot card that is bound into the cover of this book is of the LOVERS and making it an even more sought after of the 26 produced. This is letter "I" of 26 lettered edition. Book is in fine unread condition.

If interested I can send you more photos of this unique exotic item.

    • Hand sewn
    • Illustrated with tarot cards by Peter Richardson which were set in borders by J.K. Potter
    • Text has been typeset from the authors original manuscript and printed on Mohawk Superfine
    • Illustrations are printed on Vintage Gloss
    • Bound in full hunter green Morocco leather
    • 22kt. gold stamped spine
    • Each copy has a tarot card inlayed above two poker chips from the Flamingo Hotel & Casino embedded in the front board
    • Endleaves are uncut sheets of one dollar bills and the limitation sheet is made from uncut sheets of two dollar bills from the U.S. mint.
    • Signed by the Author

HOLY F... ,I mean, ahem, Grail, indeed! Major congrats on one of the toughest- and more importantly- worthy acquisitions. What I mean by that is a true Holy Grail shouldn't be just about rarity, but also form and content. SK's "Holy Grail" satisfies neither of those. This on the other hand satisfies all three. Thanks so much for the cool pics! Where ever did you find it?

Google and Ebay searches did not turn up the book (at least not on the first ~10 pages). I backtracked to find someone that at one time owned one. Locating that person took a bit of work, but once found, he pointed me to the right person. There are still 25 copies out there-happy hunting!

Many congratulations! That is a wonderful purchase! And it very rarely comes on the market for sale.

A couple of years ago there were a couple of copies on ABE at high prices (over $7K, IIRC). As Jerome said, there are none listed now. I've got one but it is in a matching set of lettered copies and unlikely to be broken out of the set.

In 2000 I bought a set of the first 6 books published by Charnel House, all matching letter "C" for $7500. THE STRESS OF HER REGARD by Tim Powers, THE NEW NEIGHBOR by Ray Garton, BEASTCHILD by Dean Koontz, LAST CALL by Tim Powers, DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART by Dean Koontz and WHERE THEY ARE HID by Tim Powers. The seller claimed (and rightfully so) that I could buy subsequent letter "C's" as they were issued. I honestly thought at the time that Charnel House was defunct and there would be no further books. I've kept the set going but it is really expensive to do so. There are currently 25 published titles and they average $1500-$2000 apiece (roughly). Three more are on the way and already paid for. I really didn't know what I was getting into but the books ARE beautiful.

I didn't want to hijack Jerome's personal collection thread so I'm posting this image of my book here. Posters in Jerome's thread wanted to see other Tarot cards. I got the "6 of Swords." I am not that impressed and I once told Joe Stefko. He was surprised and said it was one of his favorites. Go figure.

Equally nice, IMO, is THE STRESS OF HER REGARD. Not as highly prized by collectors though. It was the first Charnel House publication in 1989. Bound in Morocco Niger leather and each book is dyed a different color. Included was a piece of original Powers artwork from the book. The limitation page was real African Maple wood, hand cut into veneer.

I am surprised they even got to the six of swords. There are 22 "name" cards before they start to use numbers.
Perhaps in another thread (or here is fine), I'd love to see the Ray Garton Beastchild. I have the S/l and it is unbelievable.

WOW... That is definitely the holy grail Mr Flagg - Congrats, I love the Tarot card you got. The lettered Stress of Her Regard is also awesome - I never knew it came with original Powers art... very cool and a close second "grail" IMO. Man, I love this thread

Both. I have the S/L of both, but not the Lettered. The New Neighbor is quite provocative, text and visual.

I'll post here but feel free to move to another thread if you think that would be better.

THE NEW NEIGHBOR by Ray Garton was Charnel House's second publication in 1991. Bound in crimson Moroccan leather with a lace stocking recessed into the front board. Also has a bound in garter as a book mark. All in keeping with the extremely seductive (near pornographic) story line. The J.K. Potter illustrations are, in many instances, near pornographic as well. Needless to say, I LOVE this book!

BEASTCHILD by Dean Koontz was Charnel House's third book, published in 1992. It was the first to come with a traycase. Black Japanese linen with a leather insert on the front. The book has a black Morocco leather spine and the boards are bound with lizard. Pamela Lee did some really nice interior illustrations.
