Evening Shade - Outstanding cast and great writing. Creators Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason hit another home run with this one ( they also created Designing Women ).

While I agree it was "smarter" than it pretended to be ... it really wasn't all that smart. It also seemed very hit or miss with its clever-ness.
