I think the last time I forced myself to finish a book I didn't like was The Scarlet Letter. That book taught me that, if you think it's going to get better even though forcing yourself to read it is torturous, headache-inducing, and quite frankly, NOT FUN, you are wrong. I told myself after that: "Never again, Amanda. Just stop while you can. "

Exactly! I hate wasting time on a bad book when there's a great unopened book waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.

As others have mentioned, sometimes you know right away. I think I got about 30 pages in to The Lovely Bones before I said "lol, NOPE"
How many pages into The Fault in Our Stars did we get before saying "Nope" ?
But seriously, if I can tell right away that I really don't even care for any of the characters, what's the point, right? I don't like people in real life, why the hell would I want to waste my free time reading about people that I also don't give a shit about?

I do wish there was a box in my mind I could put all those unfinished books in, set them on fire, and somehow erase them from my memory. That way they would stop haunting me for never having been finished.

I agree, I was overwhelmed. I keep the book around in case I ever get further along in it. I also have the first two Baroque books and Anathem, so I haven't given up on him yet.

It's pretty obvious what happened and it was bleak and it depressed the hell out of me. After being pressured by fans he wrote the sequel which changed the ending of The Rising completely. I felt cheated and robbed of the emotional impact The Rising had on me. I've read many of his books since then but never with enthusiasm I've had before The City of the Dead.
Not sure what to think of this as I am reading Rising now.

I'm notorious for starting books and putting them down right away. It depends on the book, some I'll toss aside before I even finish the first chapter. Others I'll force myself to read and finally quit much further in when it doesn't get any better. But for the most part the story really has to grab me from the get go.

Just finished Full Dark No Stars for the first time. I couldn't help but wish for a little more variety. Every story was pretty much the same thing: Woman good, Man bad. And with Under the Weather, I called the twist literally two pages in. Meh.

Next ill be reading/experiencing S. By J.J. Abrams and someone else. Excited.

The movie takes one of the stories and makes a half-hearted attempt at it. The book has 5 separate but loosely related stories. Two are amazingly awesome; two are very very good; and one is sortof weird but interesting in its novelty. The story Low Men in Yellow Coats (which the movie is mostly based on) is one of the "amazingly awesome" stories.

    You should read the book.

As a Vietnam vet, I like Hearts quite a bit. King's chapbook, The New Lieutenant's Rap, is an expansion of one of the stories.

I loved the book as well! I actually thought the movie did a good job of the first story (Anthony Hopkins rarely does bad movies, IMO), although it changed a few significant things. Don't want to give any spoilers!

Since Bethany, and a few others suggested it, I've been reading book one of The Dresden Files.
I had no idea there were 15 books in the series before I started. Fifteen!!!

What do you think of it? I had a hard time with it. I loved Summer of Night so much that it was probably inevitable that I wouldn't like that one. I was just disappointed with the direction he took with some of the characters.
