I just finished "Life After Life" by Kate Atkinson. I *really* enjoyed it, a very well-written book. About to start Skin Game by Jim Butcher, the latest Dresden File book. Can't believe its taken me this long to read it.
I am Daenerys Stormborn and I will take what is mine. With fire and blood.

    I loved Mr. Mercedes.

Also, I've been meaning to start the Dresden series forever but I find myself increasingly short on reading time lately.

Just finished John R. Little - The Memory Tree.
    Reading:

Herbert - Children of Dune (nearly half done, much better than Dune Messiah)
Koontz - Lightning (almost finished, standard Koontz story with quirky and unrealistic dialogue, a damsel in distress headstrong enough to overcome those obstacles but still in need of a White Knight. No dog... yet.)
    Alejandro Jodorowsky - Metabarons

Finished Tim Lebbon's Shifting of Veils in one sitting. Great story. Here's my spoiler-free review .

Here's the review for The Big Tree by Rick Hautala. Published after his passing, this is his final story. I was pleasantly surprised to see it reposted on his website.

Reading: assorted Halloween and October stories.

Guys, I really want to read a good scary book, but need some suggestions.
Anybody got any ideas for me?

And by scary, I don't mean disturbing. I mean classic kind of scary; monsters, ghouls, ghosts. Not backwoods redneck gets a chainsaw and hacks people up kind of scary.

How about zombies? Handling the Undead is one of my favorite books. It's got some scares to it, but handles the subject matter of the dead coming back to life in a very human way. It's a great book to read around Halloween...and would fit in with your costume!

Also, I'm reading The Demonologist right now and it's really good. I'm only 100 pages in, but I'd recommend it. It's about the career of Ed and Lorraine Warren. If you want ghosts, this is the book to read. It's really interesting because it's got actual dialogue from cases they've worked and tells you all the whos, whats, and whys about human and inhuman spirit activity. I've been reading it before I go to bed.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but my friend swears up and down by this book. I think I might give it a whirl soon. Check it out, see if it's up your alley.

I'll look into those. I'm really in the mood to be scared and/or creeped out after dark.

That's what I thought, having read King's recommendation. I was wrong: the book's a fast read, gory, but not scary in the least.
To me, a huge disappointment and definitely not recommended.

Straub's If You Could See Me Now is all kinds of scary goodness.

Kealan Patrick Burke's Theater Macabre is a short story collection and a lot of stories are about ghosts. His Timmy Quinn series is all about ghosts. Check him out, he's really good.

fernandito: It was. A little dated since it was written in 2009, but it acknowledged how fast things become outdated in the world of social media, and still had some fascinating insights into the future (I particularly liked the idea of paid product placement in e-books). Anyway, it'll hold me over on that front until the social media book I really wanted to read-- Crush It!-- arrives
