Man, Nolan has got it down pat. That looks insanely interesting and just freaking awesome.

I'm sure it's going to be amazing but that might be my least favorite Nolan trailer ever. The first one was much better.
I'm just not sold on Nolan's science fiction. They always turn out tti be technically engaging and proficient yet feel also pretty hollow.. an.all style and no substance kind of deal...the best form of that deal, though. Then again I know most Nolan fans weren't big on Dunkirk and I think it's his best work. Starting to see a Kubrick divide with Nolan.

It is like you read my mind after finishing my last viewing of Interstellar! Nicely said.

People can say what they want about Nolan, but there's not another director working today that is pumping out high-concept Sci-fi for mainstream audiences. There just isn't.

Again, I like Christopher Nolan as a director. I loved Interstellar and Inception. But I also really liked Memento The Batman Trilogy, Dunkirk and The Prestige. None of which I would call Sci-Fi. But I do admit that Memento plays with time
so some people may not like it. And I like Insomnia, even though I have not watched it in a long time. Tenet looks interesting to me and I can't wait to see it.

I think that's a valid criticism, if a bit extreme. Sometimes his characters are just chess pieces in his intellectual games. Oddly enough I think the Dark Knight trilogy might be his best work in terms of character building. Maybe because he had 3 films to work with.

"Mainstream" and hard sci fi are subjective but
Alex Garland:
Ex Machina
Annihilation
Devs (Limited series) directed all 8 episodes
That is 100% of his catalog as director. 3 for 3 on hard sci fi and all excellent.
He wrote:
Sunshine (another outstanding hard sci fi)
And 27 Days Later (limp sci fi?)
If Garland is Mainstream then we have a winner.

I thought Duncan Jones was on the way there with Moon and then Source Code, but then he made World of Warcraft and his next straight to Netflix feature from 2018, Mute, flopped. I will have to give that one a watch, though and see for myself

When I think mainstream I think of films that are 4-quadrant. Don't know if Garland or Jones' films fall under that umbrella.
who cares about mainstream and four quadrant anyways? Hollywood mainstream is dying.
it is a miracle any science fiction films get made at all

I'd agree with that. Nolan is clearly more interested in Bruce Wayne as a character than Batman, which is what draws me into those movies. When you think about the trilogy as a whole, The Dark Knight is the only real Batman movie in there. It's Bruce's arc that is the real story to me. It's why I'm such a big fan of The Dark Knight Rises. As a single film it's got a fair bit of flaws, but as the closing chapter of Bruce Wayne's story it's tremendous. His villains also benefit from Nolan's style of characters since they don't have to function as people, which is the exact opposite of the first four Batman films, which went out of its way to humanize its villains with their origin stories. We don't get any origin stories for Nolan's villains.
I couldn't agree with Villeneuve being a mainstream sci-fi filmmaker, as lauded as he is. Blade Runner flopped super hardcore, which is extremely surprising considering it came after Arrival.
Same with Alex Garland...Ex Machina made a tiny profit, but Annihilation lost quite a bit of money. I don't think films necessary need to be box office smashes like Nolan's movies to be considered mainstream films, but I can't consider a movie that took a loss on a 40M budget to be mainstream.

I don't know if I've gotten over my disappointment in The Dark Knight Rises yet. Maybe another 8 years and I'll be good.
