Mike, are you saying you are concerned because you dont have the 1st state 'salem's Lot with the $8.95 price tag and the Father Cody error? If so, I wouldn't be too worried. There are only 5 known copies of this and you will need to be shelling out in excess of $60,000 to purchase one of them!

Most of us are content with JUST the second state!

No, I am saying that I have the "correct" jacket with father Callahan written and the price is not clipped and it says $7.95. It does say First ed though. So mine is a 3rd state. This volume was another printing of 7500 books according to site. So I have one of those. Now I need to get a 2nd state as well. First state will never happen .

I am going to take some pics later of my Salems' Lot CP an my IT CP. Because even though this is a 3rd state jacket, it has to be a first ed book because it says First Edition and no other editions or printings are listed. But I will get a second state at some time. So I will take those pics and pics of my Skeleton Crew as well as my regulators and hopefully get them up today.

Mike, I've heard that the third state is actually less common than the second. I don't know if that's true, but I see a lot more second states on eBay than thirds. All the books themselves have all the first printing points (First Edition on the CP, Q37 in the gutter of page 439).

Well, my book does have that Q37 also so it is a first ed.
    From this site:
"Comments: Quarter bound in black cloth with red boards having white pastedowns. 20,000 First Printing. First state dust jacket has retail price of $8.95 and says “Father Cody” on flap. Only a handful of these are known to exist. Second state dust jacket has $8.95 price clipped, and $7.95 is printed along with “Father Cody” on flap. Third state dust jacket has $7.95 unclipped and the correct name “Father Callahan” on flap. This was a further print run of an additional 7,500 copies"

But even though I have a less common version, which I thought would make it a bit more valuable, it's actually less valuable because it's NOT the mistake and like someone said earlier, it was the last version printed and people always want the earlier one. It's still a first though so I am happy about that. But I will have 2nd state at some point.

I give up. I can't get any of pics to upload. I have to say, that this is a pretty convoluted way to try and show pictures. There should just be an attachment option when you are typing and that's it. Like the audio forum I belong to. This uploading it and then trying to copy the link is a pain. I just can't any to work.

Giving up now would be a mistake. Can’t you see the riches right around the corner? You’ve come so far, and you’re almost there... lesser men than you have made it across. You’re. ALMOST. There.

Once you get the knack of it, it’s starightforward. Yes, it is convoluted, but it’s not so bad after the habit forms. Someone on here will troubleshoot for you I’m sure (I’m at work but can help when I get back tonight). First tip - make sure the files aren’t too large so they upload successfully (on my iMac, I change resolution from 72 to 45 or they won’t upload).

Sort of like my Salems' Lot being less desirable, even though there may be less because it came out later. I doubt it makes it more valuable, I am just glad I have a real first ed.
For more info on this including the other printing amounts you can go to Tom's website, IT section:

    Mike,

A quick look at your Photo Gallery shows that you are able to get your photos uploaded, so it seems your issue must be around actually getting the image to show up in a post. I agree, it's not as simple as it could be but once you understand whats required it becomes second nature.

When you view an image you have uploaded in your gallery, underneath is a a box entitled "HTML Code" which contains a link to your image. This is in the format <img src="http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/xxx your image file name xxx.jpg" />

Unfortunately, the site has HTML tags turned off (actually for a very good reason) so you need to modify this slightly. All you are interested in is the bit between the html tags, so just take off the <img src=" from the start and the " /> from the end and either copy whats left into the pop up that appears when you press the 'insert image' icon from the toolbar or just type [ IMG ] at the start and [ /IMG ] at the end.

here is a full example using one of your own images:

    Code:
    original link from gallery
    <img src="http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/sk_cover.jpg" />

    strip off html tags

    http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/sk_cover.jpg

add required [IMG] tags ( I have put an extra space in the tags before the closing bracket so you can see the text. Don't put the space in when you do it).

    [IMG ]http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/sk_cover.jpg[/IMG ]
    Result:
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

You know, I used to be an electrician. I think that's the result when you drill into a 480V line.

I did grab 277V a couple of times. That's no picnic. I think right after the second time is when I started collecting Stephen King books. Strange coincidental, eh?

So now that I got the pictures up, somebody needs to explain to me again, why my Salems Lot, which is a 7000 print, is less then the 2nd state which is 20,000 copies. I understand that people want the one right after the real first printing, but with S|L, the less was always better. As someone else mentioned, you hardly see 3rd state books. I just don't get it. Any more thoughts are welcome.

'salem's is an anomaly because of the price clipped jackets. The 2nd state jackets ARE the original jacket that was issued with the book, they just got clipped by the publisher and pushed through the printer again to add the $7.95 price tag. The $8.95 unclipped has become legendary and unattainable to 99.9999% of collectors and is probably more of akin to a prototype dust jacket (like the Carrie printed horizontally on the spine) as it was never actually for sale.

Fundamentally, 1st will always beat 2nd regardless of limitation.

OK. That's a little clearer now. A 2nd state is in my future, I just don't know when. So the Second state is the original DJ, which is why it is worth more and mine is a like a second printing of that jacket with the price of 7.95 already in the DJ on a first ed book. I mean my book still is a first ed as it says on the CP. It just has an unclipped dust jacket. So again, I do have an original first ed book just not a first ed DJ. OK. Like I said though, I will get one at some point.

I have a general question about IT again. Since we now know that there were multiple printings on different days, does having an original one, from the 1st print run make it any more valuable then the other printings. They did 5 printings of the first ed. Mine is one from the first batch of 400,000. I know it's still a lot of books but it is from the first batch. It probably doesn't but I thought I would ask anyway. I will say that it is in perfect condition. I mean, it looks like it wasn't even read. I can take a pic of the book, even though it's not a limited .
