It's precisely his portrayal of House that makes me think he would be the ideal Roland. The depth that he brings to that character is the kind of acting required to make Roland convincing and not just a cardboard cut-out action hero.
I agree that we need someone who can act very well to portray Roland. Someone a lot better than Christian Bale. But I just do not agree at all with the Hugh Laurie argument. Not one bit.

well I also remember Laurie from Fry and Laurie, Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster - but I still think he would do well in the role
as for Christian Bale - no way would I want him playing Roland! can't stand that little snotnose punk lol
There's always room for you Liisa.
Now I don't even remember who I was considering for Roland. Embarassing.
"...neither the stupid jokes nor the easy surface emotions were the truth of Cuthbert Allgood."
I ran across a site which listed some decent suggestions. the site is craptastically slow. I'll insert the link below if you want to look up the side by side pictures. There pretty good. Set aside a good 5 min. to scroll down the list though.
Roland Deschain – Hugh Jackman - X-Men fame.
Eddie Dean – James McAvoy - Wanted
Odetta (Susannah) Holmes– Zoe Saldana - Star Trek
Jake Chambers – Freddy Highmore - Not sure whats he been in, though he has good boyish charms.
Alain Johns – Charlie Hunnam - Sons of Anarchy TV show.
Cuthbert Allgood – Joseph Gordon Levitt - Looks familiar, though cant tell you why.
Susan Delgado – Diane Krueger - Hot!
Randall Flagg (The Man in Black) – Jeremy Irons - nuff said.

"As for gunslingers, Roland," Cuthbert says, "I am here. And we are the last."
When two fit, it makes you think
I got the cute one, my woman
She says, "Lovin's all I bring"
And it's her loving that's a wonderful thing.
Lovin' yes we are, it's such a wonderful thing
When two fit it makes you think
See us both in the black
She lays on me so relaxed.

Oh YES. Thankee-sai, Hugh Jackman was the one I was thinking about!

Hugh would be my first choice too. I may have a man crush on him.

You couldn't believe how many of my male friends have a man crush on him. He's just.. hawt.

I love the idea of Jeremy Irons as the Man In Black.
Although I'm not particularly big on Hugh Jackman playing Roland (it just doesn't feel right but I can't put my finger on why), it does seem to fit the best out of the suggestions I've read.
Thomas Jane as Roland
Hugo Weaving as Flagg
Jane was superb in The Punisher '04. Weaving has a sick grin and would be great with the man in black's dialogue.
not really struck by any of these.
if i had my way they would ALL be unknowns as that way they bring no other baggage with them

And he was in that remake of Dark Shadows.
Not feeling most of the choices on that page, say sorry.
ETA: But I vote for no movie at all. If it has to be made, however, I vote the crabs in my siggy for the Lobstosities, and I vote a Corgi with some cgi effects to make it a Billybumbler. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that King based bumblers on Corgis in the first place.
It'll take a lot more than words and guns,
A whole lot more than riches and muscle.
The hands of the many must join as one.
And together we'll cross the river.
Puscifer, "The Humbling River"
I like James McAvoy as an actor. I just don't think he'd be able to nail a Brooklyn accent for Eddie.
They need to have the actors be as authentic as possible. Not just have a bunch of tween actors (not saying McAvoy falls in this category) to draw in the little kiddies.

I think that we need a version wherein Clancy Motherfucking Brown plays every role.

How about Clancy M.F. Brown in a one man stage show of all seven books? I think I'd rather see that than a film adaptation. No, I'm not kidding.
Exactly! I can't wait to see CMFB doing, say, Rosa.
