There's no way anyone should prefer the new Rambo over Ad Astra unless you really like seeing Stallone waddle around for 70 minutes before something happens, and even then it's not a good something.

After hearing about how Rambo was racist right-wing MAGA infused propaganda (LOL) I wrote a review that paints the film to be a left wing revenge fantasy about smashing the patriarchy.

    It's gotten very strong reviews.

Just because the film has Daddy issues doesn't mean it's bad. I could say the same thing about Field of Dreams. I haven't seen Ad Astra, but my guess is it's the central theme.

Maybe my words were too polarizing. What I meant to say is that I got the distinct impression that Ad Astra would be another derivative space flick. Nothing about it seems interesting to me, and I love Pitt.

As for the whole Ad Astra "daddy issues" thing (and I haven't seen Ad Astra; I'm speaking generally about films here): one thing I absolutely detest is when a film is, on the surface, about something unusual or interesting (in this case, space travel and problems relating to it) but turns out to be about something utterly everyday and pedestrian (in this case - apparently - some father/son relationship issues). Look, if you want to give us On Golden Pond, go ahead and give us On Golden Pond - but don't dress it up as 2001 A Space Odyssey. This is why I was completely enraged by The Adjustment Bureau; I thought I was in for an exploration of the nature of reality, but in the end, it was just...a goddamn love story. Waste...of...my...time.

But aren't all Sci-fi films infused with real life issues? There's always some kind of parallel we can draw from many of those films.

Not to the extent that they render their surface purpose (the sci-fi part of sci-fi) mere window dressing.

What if it's a really thick soup? Couldn't you still use the drumstick to eat the soup?

Midsommar is amazing. If you want to retro fit it with a lense, think of it this way - it's a horror story for everyone in that film except Dani. For her, it's a fairy tale.

Many of the occurrences in the film can be almost interpreted as a manifestation of her own will. Think of the scene where all her 'handmaidens' start wailing when she does.

yeah.. true. She never really seems disturbed. Is it because of what we see in the start of the film? Either way, brilliantly done and I am a fan of this new director. I read he was going through a tough breakup at the time he wrote this to... I feel it shows!

    Yes...

    Spoiler:
She experiences the worst trauma imaginable which facilitates her embrace of the grimly distorted fairy tale ending. Will Poulter's character - who constantly bad mouthed her through out the film - is himself silenced. She's able to shed her dependency of Christian. And by the end of the film, she has a group of people who admire her and wish to please her, a far cry from Christian's indifference towards her feelings.

I liked it, even though from the opening scene I guessed the entire movie more or less from start to finish, but hey, it's Rambo. I can see why the critics hated it, but I never listen to critics, I just listen to myself.

I saw Ad Astra and while I didn't love it, I enjoyed myself. The film has fantastic visuals as you would expect from a space film. I thought Brad Pitt was fantastic in a role that asked him to be really reserved.

Where some of my issues lie are with a few of the plot devices that get Brad Pitt to where he ends up going. Some of it felt illogical. The ending was somewhat anticlimactic. I told some friends afterwards how I would have ended it and they preferred my ending more. I also wasn't a fan of some of the narration.

I had no problem with the daddy issues. It was literally the entire point of the film from the start. I'm still not sure where that knock is coming from. It's not veiled or comes out of nowhere. At the end of the day, James Gray is an exciting young filmmaker.

Yep audience score (89%) was bang on and critics (27% on Rotten) were wrong. Loved Rambo. It was super solid for me. Missed just a couple opportunities but for the most part was a great way to close the series. Grew up with Rambo... sad to see him go.

I haven't seen it yet, but is it a better ending than the way they ended 4? Honestly, seeing him back in America, walking down the street was a pretty powerful way to end the film. Especially considering how things went in the first film.

    Yes...

    Or

    Spoiler:
Dani was an emotional abuser who manipulated Christian because she saw Christian as a something useful to her, a support system, and not as a person. When she no longer needed him she cast him aside.
