As it appears we are doing this chronologically, I forsee a lot of 4's and 5's early, and a lot of 2s and 3's late. For me, that is.

The first bracket will close on Monday and we'll reveal our first scores (FAS numbers). For comparison, last year's scores are here.

No problemo! I love doing it, and I loved doing it the last time. More importantly, I love that people enjoy it and have fun with it.

Well, the first results are in! The winner of Bracket #1 is The Shining and the runner-up is 'Salem's Lot, just like last year. But it was actually really close! The Shining overtook the top position by only 0.006839945 (just 0.15%). Night Shift actually came rather close to displacing 'Salem's Lot from its runner-up position, but fell short by 0.331395349 (7.23%).

And what a close run between the Shining and 'Salem's Lot... I'm going to have to read the latter for next year's vote.

You're the perfect guy for the job, pablo! I'd love to do that for a living. Best I can manage here is doing it when I can and shrugging it off when everyone makes fun of me for loving that kind of stuff.

Just a reminder: I've added notes at the close of the polls to each thread, giving the book's score and other data, but keep in mind that while it may say that such-and-such book will not be moving on to Round 2, that's not exactly true. At the close of Round 1 we will end up with 24 winners/runners-up. We will then promote the top six losing books into Round 2. So, again just to remind, some books that lost their bracket right now while earning a high enough score (Night Shift being an early favorite), still have a chance of moving on.

I hope that's not too confusing

Bracket #2 results have been added. The Stand, as expected, repeated as bracket winner with a stunning showing of nearly 80% of fives. The runner-up, like last time, was The Long Walk. The Dead Zone improved on last year's score going from 3.850000000 to 4.059523810, a 5.44% increase. My personal favorites here, Firestarter and Cujo, did not do very well, though Firestarter did go from 3.930232558 to 4.063291139 (+3.39%). Also, The Dead Zone and Cujo improved from their 2009 rating of 3 to 4.

So I was looking at the number of votes per book, and some books are getting a ton of votes while others are getting a lot less. Do you think people just aren't voting never read? Or do you think they're only voting for the ones that they've enjoyed the most?

I'm not sure. I don't see why someone would vote in one poll but not another. I hope the differences in the numbers of votes is because people who didn't read the book or don't remember the book well enough don't want to cast a vote for Never Read. But I'd urge them to vote in any case, because those NR votes do not affect the book's score in any way.

Last year I missed voting on several categories (at least once) because I pondered too long or didn't get a chance to get back before the poll closed.

The results for Bracket #3 have been posted. The winner and the runner-up from last year are the same, Different Seasons and The Gunslinger, but have switched positions! But the difference between the two was close once again: 0.043838028 (0.96%).

Bracket #4 results are posted in each thread and updated here. Not surprisingly, The Talisman and Pet Sematary, like last time, came out on top. What was surprising, though, is the complete changeup in the bottom three positions. Thinner dropped from third to fifth, and in the process became this year's first book to worsen its FAS score (it did so by -1.09%, going from 3.470588235 in 2009 to 3.432835821 in 2010). Christine went from fourth to third, gaining a whopping 17.29%. Great job. And Cycle of the Werewolf got itself out of fifth into fourth.

Bracket #5 poll results have now been posted. We have, unsurprisingly, the same winner and runner-up as in 2009 (It and DT2), although what was surprising is Misery losing 0.46% of its FAS from last year. In a pleasant surprise, Skeleton Crew moved from 5th in 2009 to 4th.

Bracket #6 results have been added. This one's an interesting bracket for a number of reasons. First of all, Four Past Midnight lost its runner-up position of last year by dropping to 3rd. The new runner-up is Needful Things, which was the bracket winner the last time. The new bracket winner is DT3. Why, do you ask? Well, it was moved up to Bracket #6 from Bracket #7 due to the decision to leave off Nightmares in the Sky from the voting. DT3 was also the bracket winner last year, in its own bracket, though it actually lost a little on its FAS, so it keeps that distinction. I know it's a bit confusing, but in the end it all works out. Personally, I'm sad to see Four Past Midnight get left behind, and with the low FAS that it got it has little chance of becoming one of the six wildcards to be promoted to Round 2.
