The way I look at it, The Gunslinger is the beginning as SK intended the reader to percieve it.

Technically you could say the reader doesn't join him at the beginning of his loop.

The other title for the gunslinger is "Resumption", possibly meaning the reader is simply resuming Rolands tale...

So why would the tower send him back to the beginning of his journey and not let him save it? If it was...

The first time I read them my exact thought was, "That's it?"

But I've reread them a few times now and the ending makes me happier...

Is it possible the loop didn't start back over in the desert, but at the beginning of the gunslingers life?
Perhaps King just put the desert scene in there to make the point that yes, he still is on...

With how old Clint Eastwood is, I think he would be better suited as Father Callahan.

That way he's at least in the movies, but we find someone younger for Roland.
