I don't think I participated in the newsgroup, but I remember the name Robert Whelan - why was he notorious? I recall the name, but no specifics.
Yeah, ultimately grades don't matter anyway, if one is happy with the appearance and thinks it meets expectations....you're absolutely right that CGC comics grading and 'slabbing' has tried to make...
Funny, but certainly not reality (the list, not you). "Mint = Fine." Makes no sense to me. But I guess these organizations can use whatever hoodoo they want to make everything sound perfect.

Where did those guidelines come from?
I would use:
Mint
Near Mint
Very Fine
Fine
And so on...
Is that the definition of "fine?" That's the def. of "mint" isn't it?
I sold my set...that was when I gave up my hope of a matched # for every SK limited....so sad....
Seriously, that's price gouging at its worst. 747 is too scattered anyway, I know who has the LSoE #747s. Better off just getting what works for you and not worrying about trying to match off the...
I haven't read 'Faithful' either, which is funny considering it focuses on the greatest sports moment of my life....but, meh, it's a series of journal entires more than a narrative...I have flipped...
Yeah, you're right of course...from 10 years of buying and selling, I know a good Ebay day on one day can be a bad day the next, and vice versa...though I'm not sure it's a "hell of a deal." But...

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot...Booksellers as a breed are pretty weird, anyway...I've never gone in to any used/rare bookstore and had it be anything other than an odd experience - not bad, just...
Well...if it's any consolation, even a first edition "Stand, Uncut" isn't worth $125, so it was going to be a beginners mistake no matter the outcome...so the seller was dishonest AND overpriced.
...
How was it not a first edition? What was the problem with it? BCE?
Yes - that's scummy, absolutely. Especially if you asked questions that he was deceptive or misleading about.
I guess what I really meant is if somebody lists an authentic first edition (let's say...
$25 was a good price...Just remember that you can't ever be taken advantage of, if you're paying a price you agreed to and accepted![/QUOTE]

Little on the pricier side, but not by much...if it's mint, then it's probably worth the $25-$50 you might have overpaid...emphasis on 'might.'
Hmmm....is this evidence of poor pre-planning??? Haha...
I wouldn't worry too much about ebay - at least once you've done research and know your budget, etc. Most every collector here bought and continues to buy books that way. You can always ask advice...
