Are these illustrations in the book?
Those illustrations at the top just don't look right to me. Barbara just looks fooking evil where I've been picturing Matthew Fox in my head while reading the story. Julia Shumway looks far too young; I've been seeing the Petrelli's mom from Heroes in my head for her. McClacthey? Maybe but I see him more like the SEXY D J Qualls! Both the Rennie (Jr. & Sr.) are too thin. I kinda picture John Goodman as Big Jim. That pic looks more like Dick Cheny. Junior shouldn't be that cute. Just fat, mean and ugly.
The dog looks about right though!

When I see Big Jim in my head, he's more like David Ogden Stiers than the picture. Odd though that he doesn't sound like Charles Emmerson Winchester. Big Jim sounds more... ominous.
When I picture Big Jim, I see a cross between Warden Norton from The Shawshank Redemption and Dick Cheney, so I think the illustration is fairly accurate. I agree that Barbie and Junior are way off, but I think Joe and all the others are pretty spot on.
I was just reading more of UTD and realised I was completely off base with the picture in my head. I do get a sense of Stiers (from Doc Hollywood I think), but it's really more like James Gandolfini from The Sopranos.
Since the very start, in my mind's eye Dale Barbara has always looked like jayson.
