The Great Movie Tournament - 1980s: Round 4 - Group 1 of 16

During the fourth round of The Great Movie Tournament, please vote for up to two films you would like to move onto the next round. The top two films will be moving on. Keep in mind that the percentage of the vote a given film receives will determine its standing going forward.

Personally not much of a fan of Elm Street. I never really liked the 80's slasher genre. So it was Aliens and Christmas Vacation for me.

I love Freddy, but he's going up against 2 films that are some of the greatest of all time in their respective genres.

Could not disagree more, respectfully, feevy! Freddy is one of the most iconic cinematic figures of all time, and completely epitomizes the '80s. And of course he's probably one of the most recognizable villains not just in horror, but film in general. While the series may have had lesser entries down the road, the original is an undisputed A-list classic at this point and one of the best horror films of the decade. Elm Street fandom is still huge, despite the poor remake from ten years ago being the last gasp of the franchise (until the inevitable upcoming reboot). Freddy will always be remembered, decades from now. I don't think National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, as funny as it may be, ranks anywhere near it, or even as a top '80s comedy (or even of its year).

Finally, a few numbers:

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): 7.5 on IMDB, 76/8.8 on Metacritic, 94/83 on RT, and 3.8 on Letterboxd.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989): 7.6 on IMDB, 49/7.8 on Metacritic, 66/86 on RT, and 3.6 on Letterboxd.

Ok, maybe I was being a little harsh.. and don't get me wrong, I love Freddie! Probably my favorite horror film icon. But even the first film's power is comparatively a step behind the 2 films leading the way here.

Yeah, I wish it was in another group. Seems like my remaining favorites all get lumped together. There's been a couple groups already where I don't think I've voted, and many where I only voted for one.
