Erik Keene breaks into King's home-claims Misery plot stolen..(1991)
STEPHEN KING wasn't home, but his wife, TABITHA KING, was when, she said, a man broke into their house April 20 in Bangor, Me., and threatened her with a bomb. ERIK KEENE, who says that the plot of Mr. King's novel "Misery" was stolen from him, was indicted Monday by a grand jury on charges of burglary and terrorizing. He has been in jail in Bangor since the break-in.
Mrs. King fled to a neighbor's home, where she called the police, said SHIRLEY SONDEREGGER, Mr. King's assistant. "They came with a bomb-sniffing dog and found the bomb to be a fake," she said.
Mr. Keene, who said "Misery" was based on the life of his aunt, had gone to Mr. King's office earlier the day of the break-in. "He wanted Steve to help him write a sequel," Ms. Sonderegger said. "I said he didn't do that type of thing and he stormed out of the office."
Bail for Mr. Keene was set at $5,000. A psychiatric examination ordered.
