Mexico landed in one of the more difficult groups. South Africa isn't a particularly difficult team, but they are the hosting nation, and it's always tough going up against the home team, no matter how limited their players may be. Even though France qualified as a wild card, they can never be ruled out because they have excellent players that play for some of the most prestigious clubs in Europe. Uruguay is a South American heavyweight, but we gave them a pretty good thrashing in the Copa America last year, and we have a pretty good record against them in the last few years, so I'm not too worried about them.

I'm a gooner BTW. henry can walk on water.

I had the hardest time in the last Cup finding the games. I did track a lot of stuff online, but that's not the same as watching.

I'm not sure you can find TF1 online but they show all football games here and they may even broadcast them in English if there's a webTV.

They should be there? I disagree, Ireland played some of our best football in those games against France and if we hadn't been cheated out of it I think we would have been a strong team next summer.

... fixed that there for ya FP!

In all seriousness, it's a real sickener for us that we aren't going. But that's football, and that's life.

I have a feeling England could be a good bet this time. Brazil as always... and I wouldn't be surprised if Argentina rise from their barely-scraped-qualification to be a real power too. Italy are always a bet too, but i think they're weaker at the back now than we always expect from an Italian side.

Mexico defeated Italy yesterday 2-1 in a very entertaining pre-world cup match. This bodes well for Aguirre's men as they needed a confidence booster after their two most recent defeats at the hands of Holland and England.

In other news, some of the squads have suffered very heavy loses in the form of the following players

England - Rio Ferndinand - Central Defender - Suffered a knee injury, will have to be replaced
Ivory Coast - Didier Drogba - Striker - Broke his right elbow, will have to be replaced.
USA - Jozy Altidore - Striker - Knee injury , will be under intense physical treatment until 1 day prior to the start of the cup where it will be determined if he can participate or not

Tito_Villa
06-04-2010, 08:54 AM
Yeah its abit of a blow to lose Ferdinand, but i don't think it will effect the team too much ... will be interesting to see who will be captain now, maybe Gerrard!

Also its a real shame about Drogba, i mean the thing i love about the world cup is that is hosts the world's best players and Drogba is definately one of the world's best strikers at the moment!

I'm predicting a 2-1 victory for England today.

Sloppy is an understatement, it was complete SHITE!! I knew I shouldn't have watched it, football always makes me really angry

But seriously, these men are being paid fucking ridiculous amounts of money...and for what?! In the middle of the second half we had insane possession of the ball and it was completely wasted, so many chances to score that were either messed up or passed by. At this level I expect the squads to be flawless, you want close games, but scores more like 5/6, y'know -exciting football!

And Rooney didn't even get to touch the ball until something like 17 minutes into the match.

I don't know about what you think - but England better not start Green in the next match.

I did enjoy the Slovinia v Algeria match though - it was a relief not to be emotionally involved and just enjoy the play.

As we speak: The Netherlands - Denmark just started :) I'm not a soccer fan at all but world cups are always interesting. The problem is the The Netherlands have GREAT world-class players who play in some of the best teams of the world - but they just don't seem to be able to play as a NATIONAL TEAM...:pullhair: so I guess we'll see many moments of Dutch brilliance throughout the tournament but in the end we'll get our asses kicked, as always.

England's GK might want to consider living abroad after that abysmal mistake against the US

I'm not surprised by Germany's 4-0 dispatching of Australia, the Germans always present formidable teams come the WC. Klose and Podolski are one of the best attacking pairs in this tourney.

Holland won 2-nil against Denmark today, but I wasn't entirely convinced by their performance - their offensive trident are going to suffer against stronger defensive teams. Hopefully Robben recuperates soon.

Let's see how the defending champs fare against Paraguay today.

fernandito
06-16-2010, 08:51 AM
Wow, Spain just lost to Switzerland 1-0. Losing the first match in a WC is always a bad omen, especially for a team aspiring to take the cup home. Let's not even get into Spain being ranked the best team in the world right now, or the fact that Switzerland currently sits in the 100th something ranking, or the catastrophe becomes even more apparent. Let's hope the Spaniards are able to get their act together for the next two games.

I'm hoping for either a victory by South Africa over Uruguay today, or a scoreless draw.

FIFA should be ashamed of the officiating this WC. It's been horrible and across the board.

If they don't adopt a reply agenda, they're being fools in the face of the world.

Though Germany was playing a great game, I sincerely feel that if the "uncalled" England goal was allowed - it would have changed the whole game dramatically.

Did you also cringe when Demy de Zeeuw (Netherlands) got kicked in the face by Caceres (Urugay)?

YouTube- De Zeeuw getting kicked in the face!

Yeah.... I think it was a team "OUCH !!! Now that had to hurt!".

And honestly, what do you think, folks? I thought the officiating was horrible / has been horrible through-out the tourney.

Yellow cards seemed to be given at random on some days.

Demy was actually unconscious for a moment and he also had some of his teeth 'dislocated'. Luckily he didn't break his jaw (which is what they thought had happened at first). And yes I agree with you about the card randomness.

Thank God they've given Howard Webb the final - hhe's English, and he's a hell of a good Referee - hope he has a good day on Sunday.

yeah that Octopus is something else. I don't really care who wins, as long as it's an interesting game. The problem is that Spain has won their last few games 1-0. At least Germany was doing lopsided interesting wins. I really wish they were the ones here, I think it would have made a more interesting game. I hope I'm wrong. :(

Holy shit, I hope the Netherlands win. I just bet my friend's wife. If Netherlands wins she has to read the series I say. ;) Guess which one that will be? But if she wins I have to read the Twilight series. (She is a raving fan)

Fuck, maybe I shouldn't have made this bet. Fucken octopus.

Spain is a deserving winner. They've been playing the best football in the world ever since their 2008 Eurocup victory, and now they finally have something to show for it. What a great match, and what a great tournament !
