Fuck that. He bought those two books from me for $900. Sell your 747s and buy different S/L editions instead. Making $$$ is always good when selling books but $2500 for two DT books that aren't even that hard to find????? Unreal.

Seriously, that's price gouging at its worst. 747 is too scattered anyway, I know who has the LSoE #747s. Better off just getting what works for you and not worrying about trying to match off the bat. Plus you did great with the #520 set so that's a start.

I usually try not to fault sellers for trying to get top dollar, but that price makes NO sense at all. The set can't be fully matched, and while DT IV is scarce, DT III certainly isn't.

If he paid $900, he should be very content to sell in the $1500 range. But...he might have his reasons, who knows.

It is price gouging, but in a buyer's market he's practically gouging himself - he has a motivated buyer, which probably will not happen a second time anytime soon.
I agree completely with Rahfa.

Reminds me of an old saying: "Pigs get fat. Hogs get slaughtered."

According to Grant's site, they're sold out. You might enquire anyway. Maybe there's an extra laying around somewhere.

What is a good price for the Arkham house books TALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE and NEW TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS? In NF or better condition.

New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos F/F just a month or so ago was 36.50 from Abe (includes shipping). Compared to the other listings at the time I thought that was a pretty good price.

If that's a first printing, not ex-lib and no owner markings than that's a great buy! (New tales goes up-to 3rd printing)

I don't a copy myself (but am looking for one, too), but how can you tell what printing it is? Does it have a numberline or does it have some other distinction?

What is a good price for the Arkham house books TALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE and NEW TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS? In NF or better condition.

I sold my F/F 1st/1st of NEW TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS for £14.99 last year.

divemaster

NEW TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS (1980) was selling for around $100 about 4-5 years ago. Like most of the collectible book market, prices have come way down. If I were selling today, I'd try to get at least $60 (and would probably fail). If I were buying, I'd try to get it for less than $35.

My copy is a First Edition and I was not aware of any subsequent printings. Unlike most Arkham House books, the edition point to look for is on the copyright page--the line "First Edition designed by Jason Van Hollander." If there are later printings I'm not sure how those are designated for this particular title. For other Arkham reprinted titles there is often a statement on the colophon page (at the end of the book) stating a second printing or third or whatever. My guess is, the way this book is designed, that it would not be designated like that but with some statement on the copyright page.

TALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE is a common book easily obtained for $20 give or take.

TwistedNadine
07-16-2011, 07:24 AM
I also didnt know there were subsequent printings. Mine states "First Edition Designed by Jason Van Hollander" with no number line. 11.95 on DJ. Copyright 1980
And no, not ex lib no markings fine dj with no chips creases etc

There definitely were later printings for New Tales of Cthulhu Mythos.

I ordered through a dealer back with it came out and it already had listed 'Third Printing designed by Jason Van Hollander'

Thanks for the feedback everybody. This confirms what I found when doing a cursory ABE check. I would have no problem paying $60-75 for NEW TALES and $20-30 for NIGHTSIDE in NF or better condition.

Thanks to all those who helped me out with these books, managed to get a most of them on the list !! So if all goes well and the books are not lost or destroyed by the delivery company I will only have 3 UK editions left to get (minus the brand new releases coming up, but those are easier to get upon release). 2 of the 3 left to get are going to be expensive to get !
Heres what i have left to get:
Carrie
Night Shift
The Bachman Books

Can't afford the Carrie or Night Shift at this point but based on what i see online I can swing a copy of The Bachman Books.
So if anyone has a UK 1st/1st of The Bachman Books they want to sell, please let me know !

OK Gents, what I am about to type may offend some hardcore collectors, but I've made a decision to fill in a few blanks in my collection with BCE editions of those out of my reach for the time being.

I'm keen to pick up Fine/Fine, early edition BCE copies of the following:
- Carrie
- Night Shift
- The Stand
- 'Salem's Lot

As far as I am aware, there are still BCE editions printed the same year as the original 1st/1sts? If so, thats the year I'd like to grab, rather than later printing editions. Yeah I know, If it's not a 1st/1st, why would I care what year. Don't know why, I just do :-)

Anyway, I'm in no hurry, and am aware these are readily available on Ebay, and so this is really just a call to you guys, as I expect if anyone here has any they want to get rid of, I can trust that they will be in good condition.

Also, I'm aware that shipping from the US will probably cost more than the books, so I may be best to keep an eye on Ebay UK anyway.

Cheers

I don't think you can tell the year of printing on a BCE. In the case of 'SALEM'S LOT, the blurb on the front cover is different on early and later printings so that may help, but other than that... I'd just go for the best copies you can find. You could also try and find later trade printings with a DJ price etc. At least with these you can more or less guess how old they are.

I'll let you know how it works out, to be continued....
If you've already started, let us know how it comes out.
I would mark a scarp book with felt pen, then experiment on it.

They are getting hard to find. Tomas had a great idea, a great product and he limited the # of cases. The two factors have made it a sellers market.

Hey sorry Jimimck. Didn't mean to imply that "humble Pie" would be required. Just pointing out options. Yeah, though in some instances the paint job out shines the wood-grain. What's nice about Dick's "The Stand" slip cases is the window, just like Tom's. that highlights the man and crow on the cover!!!! You could go either way with it too, wood grain (which mine happens to be) or painted high gloss white.

Most of my Dolso cases (all of which are pictured in my collection thread I believe) are wood grain. Dick sort of speaks to the wood and makes amazing choices!!! However, in the instance of the Salem's Lot, (mine has a silver plaque for the title) I thought the black finish would compliment the mostly black book and the black case for Insomnia provided a landscape for the purple inscriptions we decided to go with.

At the risk of going on too much, one of the cool things about a Dolso case, IMHO, is how cool he is with customizing it to your preferences such that you genuinely feel like you are part of the process.

I would too! Definitely. I've never seen one. I have some really nice copies of THE SHINING in my collection but none are what I would call "mint" or "as new." Most are definitely "fine/fine" (probably even VF/VF) but there always seems to be a little rubbing to some part of the dj, a little bump to one of the boards or some other minute thing that keeps it from being perfect. I'm really critical though.

'SALEM'S LOT is the same way for me. I've got some exceptionally nice copies but none are "mint."

Not yet ... :( But I figure I can still buy the little stuff and be ok if I stay away from the more expensive items (artwork, S/Ls ...)

I really like the subcollection aspects of these items. I bought three Holdorfs a week or so ago for a great price and they look great next to each other on my shelf. Then I bought all six paperback Collector's Editions books ... Then I bought the Carrie cartoon cover, then I bought Rosemary's Baby from the SK Horror Library, lol. I figure I might as well get the rest.

Oh, and the King Classics Campaign books ... those covers are beautiful! :)

THE SHINING posts here made me curious so I pulled mine off the shelf. Dust jacket looks pristine, but the book's spine is slightly pushed in at the bottom (is this 'rubbing'?); otherwise the book is VF in my opinion. However, there appears to be remainder speckling on the bottom pages, unless it was manufactured like that, which I doubt. And the original receipt was inside, paid $60 plus $2 P & I March 11, 1982. Sounds like a good deal to me.

One (or two) pics of a book can reveal/hide flaws. Having the book in hand, removing the DJ cover opening the book etc. is the only way to-subjectively grade the book.

Very Fine (VF)
The highest grade given to any copy, very fine is a term that describes a crisp fresh copy and it admits no flaws. Any copy with even a minor blemish must not be graded very fine; therefore, there is no “else very fine” grade. Please note that some sellers use the terms “mint” or “as new” in place of “very fine.” While we feel that “very fine” is more precise, there is nothing improper in the use of those terms in description.

I was hunting for some book club editions of the early Doubleday editions a while ago, and am still keen for Carrie, Night Shift, and 'Salem's Lot.

Now actually what I'm really after is either a Book Club Edition, or later printing edition that matches the size of these originals.
I know the book club edition of Carrie is same size, but I get the feeling Night Shift is the larger size. Does anyone know for sure what size Night Shift comes in outside of a true 1st printing?

I'm sure there are exceptions, but from what I've come across in 2 years, the original Doubleday BCE (the ones that explicitly say "Book Club Edition" on the bottom right-hand inner dust jacket flap) were the same size as their 1st/1st. The ones that I've come across that are bigger are the reissues that look the same but don't say "Book Club Edition" on the dust jacket; they're almost identical to the 1st/1st except for obvious 1st indicators, address of the publisher, and the larger size (and they MAY even have a little different biography info for King on the back inner DJ flap???). Oh and I've also noticed that the ones that say "Book Club Edition" are typically made of crappier quality boards that don't match their 1st/1st (in either color or material), while the reissues were made of better quality boards and spine cloths (From what I remember, the reissues: Carrie had maroon spine cloth/black boards, 'Salem's Lot was the same as its 1st, The Shining was the same as its 1st (except the DJ's spine is turquoise and the backside is white maybe? ...instead of being a continuation of the front DJ artwork like the true 1st), and Night Shift was the same as its 1st). This probably belongs under "Collecting Questions," but just thought I'd put my 2 cents in for the questions being asked! :)

Oooh yeah, sweet memories. I still hold myself partially responsible for his descent into insanity. In the beginning, when people still took him seriously and were discussing the market value of 'IT', I randomly mentioned that I'd had a dream in which Mr. Rabbit Trick purchased 'IT' for something like $3,000,000.

Now, I did actually dream this and I simply posted it here because I thought it was funny... but I did NOT expect him to use it as an incentive to list his copy of The Star Invaders on eBay for an insane amount of money. It really creeped me out when he did that and by association involved me in his weirdness.

The $175 edition was inscribed by Straub I think? Good price.

You are correct.

inscribed/flatsigned "To Terry" by co-author Peter Straub and 5 artists (Thomas Canty, Steve Gervais, Rowena Merrill, Don Maitz and Bernie Wrightson). Peter Straub's inscription reads "For Terry, Isn't this a handsome edition? All best, Peter Straub 1/11/86

The inscription on my copy reads..".For Jim, Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure."

http://www.akyle.f2s.com/images/talisman_2.jpg

I'm glad I waited. I scored a copy on eBay two nights ago for $99. Signed by Straub in one and also inscribed by him in the second book.
