Can anyone post a picture of the cover of Misery (the edition that has King as a character of Misery's return).

Thanks!

Bev Vincent

It has the standard ax-shadow front cover. It's a false inner cover that has the parody:

This is a bit of a strech but if anyone is willing to give copies of the 5 articles written by King that appeared in "The Register" back in 1988 then it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

Just got to say I've really enjoyed reading all the different threads on this site over the last month or two.
I would love to find a copy of the numbered signed Heart Shaped Box US Arc. I think they were only numbered to a hundred. And if anyone would know where or have heard of anyone with one it would be you guys.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome Roomtemp, if anyone can help it will be here.
I am confused about a "numbered signed ARC" for the US Heart Shaped Box.
Someone here will clarify, and then we'll move these posts to a Joe Hill thread.

Roomtemp--I was browsing eBay and there was at least one of these & several S/Ls of HSB a relatively good prices--this was a day of two ago so I don't have the links, but I just searched "Heart Shaped Box" and got over a dozen very good results.

Good luck!

I checked my collection (I don't have the Joe Hill books on a spreadsheet) and I own both the US and UK ARCs. Neither, however, is numbered. Are there two different versions, one numbered and the other not? Or did I just miss the number? I also have the s/n edition (but it's not an ARC). I think it's from the UK.

William Morrow (US proof) did a Limited of 100 numbered/signed copies of the proof for Heart Shaped Box (I have #10). Also, of note these were released very early as I got this somewhere like 5 months before release (not sure?). This would be a guess, but I think these went out before the regular proofs did.

Hey everybody,

Thanks for the welcomes.

I'm drooling looking at those books. If you guys ever sell ... Well let me join the line.
I have the standard US and UK arc of HSB. Plus the Standard S/L from Sub Press and signed US and UK firsts . So want to finish of that little subsection before I go after the real expensive chapbooks that I dont have.

Thanks again for the help....and if anyone wants to sell a copy. Let me know.

Also...Sorry if this was in the wrong thread...

Cheers,

Seriously, I don't think I want to get started on another author, even Joe Hill. I just can't afford it. It IS tempting, though. I have another of Hill's proofs, the US 20th Century Ghosts.

I don't think theres a specific market price per se, but I think it usually adds $50-$75 to the selling price of the book itself.

Given the price of the recent Stand tray case, and the larger size and nicer materials of the 'Salem's Lot tray case, I'd say you are right.

But I don't know if a tray case on its own really holds/increases in value like books do.

Subject: A handful of 'Salem's Lot photos available

Betts books has 7 copies of the unbound Jerry Ulesmann photos available for $50 each. I know many of you have expressed interest in picking up a set of the unbound photos to complete your unsigned edtion & traycase. These will go exremely quickly. If you wind up reading this after today I'm sure they'll be gone.
I can't control anyone's purchasing decisions but I would ask that if you found out about the photos from me you'd limit yourself to 1 set, so as many people can get copies as possible.
Thanks much,
Tomas Krynsky

At the time I called Betts and placed my order by phone, so no record other that I paid the $50 mentioned here.

Well...I talked with McKean as well last year (he was the main guest of a comic con here and he cancelled a week before the con started) and I asked him if I could send him the book to sign. He said "Of course, but I don't want the books to be damaged, so better wait until I visit Argentina"....

Well...sometimes it's best not to say anything...:arg:

Due to the fact that a certain member here(who shall remain nameless) rocks the f***kin house (cough*Wiz*cough), I know own one, and it's getting lonely standing there naked on my shelf next to the bound and covered books. My problem is I'm not sure about valuations, as I haven't really paid any attention to them prior to now. Any help from the more knowledgeable members out there? I'm looking for DT ones, of course, but I'm also curious about a few other non-DT ones that are my particular favorites. Which books have ARCs? Most? All? Are there any that are particularly rare? I lay myself at the feet of the masters. Any instruction you can give would be appreciated.

Steve

and the pictures of the ones I actually own:

jhanic proofs (http://thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=6011)

There are a number of really scarce ones (Cell and Nightmares in the Sky, for example) and some really common ones (Rose Madder, the US Bag of Bones, the US Hearts in Atlantis and the US Lisey's Story). Prices are all over the map for all the proof/ARCs.

The list on the "SK Proofs" page is good.

You can also see the US and UK ones side by side on My SK Proofs. (http://www.akyle.f2s.com/proofs.html)

I've only just started collecting proofs, so I've still to get a lot.

Bob -

I am looking to find one. I recall about six months ago seeing one from England sell for $150 on eBay. Granted thats eBay and all... but it still tells me that the market value wouldn't be much more than $250-$300. The one on ABE I asked for his best price and it was $500 shipped - still to rich for my blood.

I'm trying to sell a few things right now, if I'm successful I might go in at $400 - still over market value in my opinion, but not so much that I'd loose sleep over it.

US: Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, Night Shift, Bachman Books, Cycle of the Werewolf (HC)

The ones that I need are:

Carrie
Salems’ Lot
Rage
The Shining
Night Shift
The Long Walk
Roadwork
Danse Macabre
The Running Man
Different Seasons
Cycle of the Werewolf
The Talisman
Thinner
Skeleton Crew
The Bachman Books
Eyes of the Dragon
The Dark Tower I
The Dark Tower II
The Dark Tower IV
It
The Stand (Uncut edition)
Four Past Midnight

One's I have but need in better condition:

Needful Things
Everything's Eventual
Black House
Misery
The Dark Half

Currently, I'm trying to fill in the ones that I have that are not in perfect condition, as well as the ones from the 90s(ish). i.e. Four Past Midnight.

Ricky
06-15-2009, 09:35 AM
I agree, it's quite a list. I do have many firsts, but of course, SK has written quite a bit!

As for prices, assuming all are fine/fine condition, the later ones (1990ish) I'm generally paying about $15.00 for each that I've gotten in fine condition, so I'm trying to stay in that area. If it's a bit more, so be it if it's in good condition.

As for the hard-to-find-in-good-condition ones like It, Thinner, DT books, it could range from $50-$100+ depending on which one I'm currently trying to find.

The early Doubleday books, I'm not even going to bother with. Once I find a sack of money lying in the gutter, that's when I'll track those down. :)

Hey all,

I'm new to King collecting, but after a few weeks of research, I'm ready to get started. Currently my most collectable King book is the thrashed paperback copy of Duma Key I'm still reading (I'm a frequent patron of the library), so please help me get something respectable without having to deal with ebay shenanigans.

The book I'm really after is a s/l copy of Salem's Lot (Centipede edition of 300). It's always been my favorite King story and it looks like a lovely edition. I'd also be interested in a Stand s/l coffin.

Otherwise, I'm looking for old first editions as close to fine as possible:

I wouldn't worry too much about ebay - at least once you've done research and know your budget, etc. Most every collector here bought and continues to buy books that way. You can always ask advice about a seller, or if a condition merits a price, etc.

But I sell all my books, and I'm certainly not conducting any shenanigans...haha...

Patience and 1K are on your side.
I (as an early buyer), hate to see it sell for <1K, but things will change.

I have a hardcover copy of "The Girl Next Door" by Jack Ketchum - the Overlook Connection Press edition with the foreward by King. Its just the trade edition, but I digress. I had ordered the paperback and they were out of them so upgraded it to the hardcover. Seeing as I just want to read it, I figured I would offer this copy here.

If anyone wants to track down a paperback copy of the book and send it to me, and pay for me to ship the hardcover copy to you, then I'll trade them straight up!

Anyone interested?

Willing to consider a swap. Signed Under The Dome, ordered from Scribner in original box (unopened) if you desire, for a signed book from King on one of these UTD signings, with assorted literature, ticket etc.

EDIT:

Holding off till value of event signed books are better determined.

If I get two books in November at the NYC event, I would consider a swap of one of them.

Me, I'm looking for a UTD proof dustjacket/bellyband (yeah I know it's probably too soon to be looking for these...).

I'm also still on the lookout for a reasonably priced US 1st/1st of 'Salem's Lot. I keep on reading that one should be able to get this book in VG condition for about $200 but I haven't seen these cheaper copies... and FWIW, I don't care if it has a 3d state DJ (which I guess is less collectible).

I've always thought that the second state was more common than the third. But the second state (being earlier) was always the more desirable hence the higher asking/selling price.

How about giving them a Christmas to remember by selling me your original versions of:

Ubris - Fall 1969 - featuring "The Dark Man/Stud City"
The Drum - 27 Oct 1965 - featuring "Codename Mousetrap"
The Drum - 29 Jan 1966 - featuring "The 43rd Dream"

Swaps considered.

Sounds like your friend could be like me. A long time ago I decided the DT S/Ls were out of reach and that I'd be happy to have a complete Stephen King library of First Editions. I always said I'd have trouble getting The Gunslinger, Carrie, Salem's Lot, and Night Shift First Editions. But perseverance has paid off and I have Carrie (actually got it signed at the Three Kings) and Night Shift. Now I need the Gunslinger and Salems Lot! One can only hope!

Or in some cases have a teriffic friend! Your firend will be amazed if you pull this off! Probably flabbergasted!

Anyone have a fine condition trade edition white lettered dustjacket they want to sell or trade me for one of my slightly messed up ones, maybe off of a reading copy? So would like a nice one for my signed copy !!

Really I think the best thing is to just to decide roughly what you're willing to spend. I haven't seen any up for auction. Honestly I've been wanting one for awhile myself. As for worth though...??? It's kinda' hard to say since they don't show up anywhere much, so my opinion is whatever amount you can be happy with putting towards it is it's precise worth. I know you were probably wanting something more specific, but I wouldn't have an idea even of what others would be willing to pay for one.

Hi, I need a hardcover of the Gunslinger, and of the Wastelands. I owne all the audio formats, and all the rest in Hardcover, but am missing these two. Anyone got any Idea on a place besides amazon I could find an older edidtion of these two, for less than a million dollars a book *sarcasm*. The reason I ask is because I see people raping others for these books on ebay. I got a copy of the reprint *Drawing of the three* the second print of the first edition, with same cover as first, for 25$. I later went to ebay and saw it for over 300$. I just want a reasonable deal, and dont want to be taken advantage of. I love the Grant ed. of the Wasteland, with the plaster man on the cover.

Sam
12-14-2009, 08:17 PM
I would say check into a third edition if you want to go the cheapest route for The Gunslinger. That should go about $90+. A second edition will be somewhat expensive at $200+ and a first edition will run you $500+ I would think.

If you want a copy of Drawing of the Three first edition signed by the artist, Donald M. Grant Publishing has them for $75.

As always, check sources like ABEbooks.com and ebay before you buy as you can sometimes find bargains. Beware of something that looks like a real steal. It often is a steal, but it's the seller doing the stealing.

They used to have one up on AbeBooks in pretty constant rotation, but I don't see any right now. So they are either sold out, or it's just not posted.

As for the Gunslinger, unless you can afford a 1st edition, you can find the 2nd at decent prices now and then. I got my 2nd edition Gunslinger off ebay over Thanksgiving last year for 125. Seems like folks were distracted by the holidays, I was suprised there weren't more bids.

Dang, that's too bad. It was a great deal, he was just selling off excess stock for cover price.

It looks like you have the complete list, 37 books total.

Sorry I can't help you out with missing ones, the extras I have you don't need. Good luck with your search.

Try contacting Donald M. Grant publishing since they are the original publisher. Otherwise, keep your eyes peeled. Also, what do you mean by you don't think it's the original?

I just meant that there was no slipcase in the photos and no mention of one, so I don't think its included in the auction. I checked the DMG website but didn't see any slipcases for the S/L

$25 was a good price...Just remember that you can't ever be taken advantage of, if you're paying a price you agreed to and accepted!

UNLESS what you are paying for and what you receive are two different things. Examples would be buying what is listed as a Signed Limited Edition and getting a trade edition with a (poorly) forged signature, buying what you are told is a First Edition only to learn several years later that you paid $100 for a Book Club Edition (happened to me and was a valuable lesson in my book collecting life), or buying an original manuscript only to receive a poorly xeroxed copy of said original manuscript (happened to someone else I know, only it was a rare video and they received a bad pirate copy).

Contact Grant. I know they don't have it listed, but you never know what they may have in storage in the back room.

You got a great find. You might want to contact Tomas from http://www.stephenkingcollector.com and see if his slipcases would fit the S/L. I seriously doubt it, but you never know until you ask.

Always on the lookout for proofs/ARCs (both US and UK)! I also want to add the DT V and VI artist editions to my collection someday. And last but not least: I still need 1st/1st trades of 'Salem's Lot (US), Bachman Books (US) and Carrie (UK).

That's about it :)

That is something different...it's called THEFT.

As long as buyers recieve what they were told to expect, and educated themselves on the details, then it's the buyer's fault if they didn't ask the right questions....but active lying by the seller is another matter.

It's the buyers responsbility to ask questions, then make an educated bid.

But - yeah, in your cases, you were dealing with someone being dishonest, which is different.

You and I agree with the idea that as long as you and the seller are both happy with the price, then all is good. You and I are basically honest people though. I have known far too many who think differently from us. That's why I posted.

I've been taken before. In 1998, I purchased what I thought was a First Edition, what I was TOLD was a First Edition, from a book dealer who specialized in science fiction. He KNEW the book he was selling wasn't a First Edition and outright lied to me, even pointing out what marked the book as a First Edition. I paid $100 for the book, which was a great price had it been a 1st, but it's actually a BCE. I was very happy with the price I paid. It was only after I really started looking into book collecting that I learned I had been taken. The book was a gift for my wife (my girlfriend at the time) for her birthday. It was one of her favorite stories and I had the author sign and inscribe it for her. It is one of her favorite pieces in her small collection. However, you can imagine my anger when i discovered that the book that I believed was a 1st Edition is actually a BCE. The only comfort I take is knowing that the merchant is now out of business. Either way he sold me a $10 book for $100 and made $90 pure profit off me.

I count it as a lesson learned.

Yes - that's scummy, absolutely. Especially if you asked questions that he was deceptive or misleading about.

I guess what I really meant is if somebody lists an authentic first edition (let's say of Firestarter) for $300, and somebody buys it, when it's really worth only $50 - then no one was really taken advantage of...the buyer made a mistake, but that's not the seller's fault.
