Doesn't really matter. He builds CUSTOM cases. You want it, you pay for it and he'll make it. Figure $100-125 more or less.

Looking for two things:

1) Matching IT s/l and art portfolio. Anyone have a set they want to cash in?

2) I recently bought a Signed Revival from the Bradenton event, but neglected to notice the fine print (in bold font...i'm dumb) that stated it didn't come with the providence shown in the auction pics. Anyone have extra flyers, etc from the event I could purchase? I'd be happy to provide a pic of the book/sig I am matching it up with and link to the ebay auction if you'd like to be sure I am not matching it with a questionable copy.

Thanks!

I'm surprised this is so "available." Limited to 400 copies. I thought it was quite rare, and only a handfull of copies would be out there. I know you and (I think) Ari got a copy for a few dollars off of ABE.

Since it was a poetry journal my guess is that most of the copies were sent out to subscribers and there's a good number of copies sitting on the shelves of people who enjoy poetry and who wouldn't necessarily give a second thought to the fact that King is featured in there.

I don't know how they were distributed....whether by subscription or just for sale locally on campus to students and professors. I once made contact with a professor at Syracuse University who had a copy. I offered him $400 for it but he refused my offer. I was extremely fortunate to see one listed on ABE several months later for $20 or so in 2010. I consider it one of my best and luckiest finds. Ari did have similar luck a few months ago.

Interesting! Was that obtained from the Guernsey's auction in 1987? If not, when? Is it typed on a typewriter or on a word processor? How can you tell it is original? Interested collectors demand answers!

No, I was asking a serious question. With word processor manuscripts it is very difficult (impossible?) to tell if a manuscript is original or copied. The first printed copy? Or one of ten or more? There are tell-tale signs, of course, like hand corrections done by the author and/or supporting documentation. The days of the manual typewriter and carbon copies is, unfortunately, gone forever.

Some of Tomas' prices are a little out of date. Expect to pay a lot more for a fine copy of Pet Semetary, fine copies are hard to find and will be $60 - $90
Also the AE DT books are also on the rise, $125 - $150 is probably about right.

Non-King but some here might be able to help me out.

Years ago I had a massive small press horror magazine/fanzine/newsletter collection that I'm trying to rebuild. James Beach is delivering back what didn't sell...which is still about 200-300 magazines. If you have any horror mags that you're looking to get rid of, let me know! No monster mags or movie mags but horror fiction magazine titles like Grue, Scream Factory, Eldritch Tales, Crypt of Cthulhu, 2AM, Deathrealm, Dark Regions, etc. (the titles are endless) and non-fiction titles like Necrofile, Studies in Weird Fiction, Afraid, HWA newsletters, British Fantasy newsletters, etc. Looking to build up the collection and possibly work on a historical online or print project with them. If you have any, please let me know!

Fairly new member, but Im enjoying the wealth of information on these boards.

While I don't rate anywhere close to what many of you have, I do consider myself a collector and have a few simple items on my want list.

Looking for hardcover editions of the latest Viking reissues of The Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands. I just want to replace my paperback copies that I got back in 1998 (still have the slipcase they came with!) with some nice hardcovers.

The Gunslinger pops up on eBay sometimes but I think the price is ridiculous. Especially considering what some of the Grant editions can be acquired for.

Thanks!

The Gunslinger had a 10000 print run. The others did not.. the price you see is pretty accurate for the most part. If you can buy a mint 1st for under $800.. do it.

And right - it seems for a mass produced reissue, The Gunslinger seems to demand a premium price.

I'll keep looking - I'm bound to stumble upon someone selling the first three for a fair price, right?

Based on what the Vikings go for compared to some of the Grants, I think I might go with the Grants because those seem to be a better buy (for me.)

Unless I happen to discover some reasonably priced Vikings. (I did find Wizards and Glass for half cover at HPB and it was in pretty good shape a few months ago (not to mention a few years ago finding the Grant W&G for $50 at Powells.))

I hear that. At the very least, you'd want all the Grant editions, Viking reprints, all three printings of Gunslinger, the Artist Editions and the full set of the 1st UK editions. The F&SF mags are also a must. But take it slow. I'm fairly certain you will get them all over time.

I can see how easy it would be to "over-collect" and I'm definitely falling down that rabbit hole.

I used to do that with comic books, and am now seeing my girlfriend do the same with all those damn covers to JEM (it's funny - she turned into the 90s version of me!) and now here I am trying to formulate the exact reason why I have multiple copies of these books.

I have however slowly turned her onto the whole collectible book idea. Acquired a few autographed editions of some of her favorite books, also gave her a nice limited edition (only 60 copies) of a recent Sherlock Holmes novel, and just recently bought her a nice s/l book from Sub Press. She's learning :)

If it wasn't one of my favorite stories and one of the few magazines that I bothered to buy, I give my copy of Redbook to you Ari. I did try searching for a while for it today for you today, but I didn't come across any in the 20-30 minutes I browsed around for it. Hi, Mulleins.

Not terribly interested in a replica, but I suppose if it were super cheap I might be tempted. Only looking for an original sig with a fun horror-theme. Doesn't necessarily have to be "Boo!," that's just the only one I've seen. Any additional help is appreciated.

Further research (which I should do before looking foolish here) indicates they don't offer shipping to the US :-/. Best case scenario I guess would be to obtain a good UK mate and have them purchase and ship to ya :).

What's the going rate on these? I see >$250, but not selling on that listing for even $199. Not listed correctly though either. Doesn't mention George R R Martin or Simmons even. I have #736 in pretty much Fine condition. I think there might be a tiny dent on an edge of the slipcase. I wouldn't sell it for $199 though as it has some sweet signatures.

The sales at Betts show this as probably the least liked anthology. The price reflects this.

Night Visions 5 S/L #184 - Fine/Fine - $125
Night Visions 5 S/L #201 - Fine Signed by Stephen King + others - $125
Night Visions 5 S/L #322; signed by Stephen King and others - $150
Night Visions 5 S/L #9 Fine/Near Fine DJ/Fine - $155

I wonder how long ago those sales were. Im assuming they were quickly snatched up because I believe they were a bit undervalued. I would easily grab a couple of these in F/F condition for $125. I think most people would.

I sold a Night Vision 5 S/L roughly 45 days ago for $230. Not sure when the above sells took place.

The person who purchased my extra copy didn't buy it for Kings signature, but George R. Martins.

IMO I think the Night Visions series is up there as one of the best horror anthologies that's been released, as far as the content goes (i.e., very high quality stories and names, both established and new talent). I bought all of the S/Ls as they were released. However, in terms of appearance they're just "regular" hard cover books, and so don't really compare against the other gorgeous anthologies (e.g., Best of Best new Horror) in terms of production or aesthetics, and that's probably why there may be less appeal for collectors specifically?

Yes, it's just a regular trade copy with a signature page. Also, the slipcase does not match the book and it is too small. (The book sticks out a bit)

Oh, the slipcases are garbage. I ended up swapping the slipcases between the editions to make them fit more appropriately. I got Jeff to make some slipcases for the recent Sub Press Night Visions editions that didn't come with slipcases and Jeff's are 10 times better.

I'm not sure why Dark Harvest ended up going with the slipcases they did. In the beginning, it was supposed to be black (see below picture):

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/668/medium/Night_Visions_5_signed_limited.PNG

I ended up receiving a damaged slipcase when I ordered from Dark Harvest. After contacting them, they sent me the one pictured with a note saying........"sorry about someone going Postal on your slipcase. Please except one of our prelim cases (black cloth) to replace the grey damaged one".

Again, not sure why they went with the grey one, but the black cloth one is actually very nice and fits the book perfect. Maybe it cost them too much.

No way! I had no idea about those black slipcases. That grey one was so tight on NV5 I had to swap it, for fear of it damaging the most valuable volume of the series!

The "Before The Play" that is in the TV Guide from 1997 is abridged. If you have never read it try to find a copy of Whispers magazine, Vol. 5, Nos. 1/2, Whole numbers 17/18. Published in 1982. It is significantly longer and a much better read. The Whispers magazine is not that hard to find and will be a whole lot less than the $300 Overlook Connection hodge-podge.

Before making any decision, I suggest you wait until the official announcement of Cemetery Dance's Artist Edition of The Shining, which will be very soon. This book will feature artwork from both Don Maitz and Glenn Chadbourne, and although not confirmed, it could very well include 'Before The Play' as an added bonus! Not only will this edition be a lot nicer, I'm pretty sure it will also cost less than the $300 price of the Overlook edition.

I think a strong argument could be made to include Whispers with "Before The Play." I think it is an excised part of the original manuscript. I really enjoyed finally being able to read it. It explained a lot that I had questions about, specifically the back story on Horace Derwent and the ghostly party-goers.

I think that Dave at the Overlook invested a lot in those TV Guides that contained the abridged version. Michael Autrey also bought hundreds of copies. They both thought that they would be desirable collectibles and sell for much more down the road. They really didn't and, I think, both are stuck with piles and piles of the things. The combo package that the Overlook is currently offering is, IMO, a creative attempt to get rid of the back stock.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time with it or buy one at any price. I can't see the attraction. It has a later printing The Shining, an easily available copy of Doctor Sleep, and a TV Guide that has been bound after the fact and made into a "hardcover." It looks like one of those horrendous Overlook slipcases (does this one glow-in-the-dark like some of the others from the Overlook?) houses these three treasures. A couple of easily obtainable (it seems) signatures and "special" dust jackets by the renown artist Glenn Chadbourne complete this atrocity. In my opinion, if you just have to have one, it shouldn't go for over $100.

Oh, and T-Dogz_AK47, I can sense your hand hovering over the anonymous negative rep button but recall the poster did ask my opinion which was then given honestly.

All this talk about Before The Play has got me intrigued about picking up a copy of Whispers. I'm assuming there are versions other than the S/L available?

Yes. It was a fanzine that was published at irregular intervals for years. Besides the hardcover S/L's there were the regular softcover copies (perfect bound with full color covers) that were mailed to subscribers. Those are plentiful and should be easy to find relatively cheaply (i.e. $20 to $30 depending on condition). It is a nice item to have as it was the special Stephen King issue. There is a long nonfiction piece by King about writing The Shining, the short story "It Grows On You," and some Dark Tower related artwork by John Stewart. Plus lots of other non-King material. You should get one and read it. I don't think you would be sorry.

I have a confession to make. After all of the feedback, advice, information (much appreciated!) I bought it this morning. Sigh. I know most of you are shaking your heads in disbelief (especially Carlos after his previous post. Lol)but there was just something about it. I know I overpaid and that it will most likely never be an "investment" piece but I just couldn't help myself. I'm a fan of both Garris and Chadbourne and while their signatures are readily available, I wanted to support this effort. If CD does indeed do a special edition I will probably end up with that too.
Please don't banish me, I just joined! :)
P.S. I checked for the Whispers issue on EBay and didn't find anything. Could be I looked for the wrong thing. Haven't checked anywhere else yet. I would still like to get the full story. If anyone happens to see it sometime please let me know. If you're not too mad at me that is ;)

P.S. I checked for the Whispers issue on EBay and didn't find anything. Could be I looked for the wrong thing. Haven't checked anywhere else yet. I would still like to get the full story. If anyone happens to see it sometime please let me know. If you're not too mad at me that is ;)

Welcome to site Beverly. There is probably not one of us that hasn't overpaid for an item that we really want. I know I have overpaid on many occasions and by a lot more than $25. What's important is the joy of owning that book and adding to your collection.

I don't do "anonymous" negative rep. If I have a problem with you or anyone else on these boards, I will be pretty vocal about it and will never shy away from being upfront in calling someone out.

There won't be any ambiguity, you will know if you receive negative rep from me. I always put my motherfucking name to it!!!

Boom! Doesn't match any other numbers and soon might be out of my collection to someone else's but I try to barely keep up with the Super Collector. haha!

Due to the fact that "Before the Play" was cut from the original printing of The Shining was because that the page count would have increased the price of the book. Then using your logic.
I guess we will have to dismiss this book for the same reason?

Doubleday fought hard against the idea of re-instating this material -- it took King years to get the book out, and even then they thought it wasn't going to sell many copies.

Beverly Marsh (Lori), you are welcome to collect whatever catches your eye and desire, sometimes ther are things that you just have to have like a The Mist Snow Globe! ;) Stay active and chatting and you'll have the regulars helping you out. Everyone is going to have their favorite editions. MY favorite recommendation which is a balance of beauty and price is the Grant S/L of Desperation (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Desperation+-+S+L).

Do you have a "Collection" thread yet? We love seeing peoples collections and watching them grow over time!

Nothing wrong with that! Collecting for me, is about buying things that I want, that mean something to me. If that means 12 dead-zone paperbacks that were printed last year or an empty can of Coke, it doesn't matter. It's getting something that's precious to me. I like the look of it, and had also asked re value. I've still got a few other books I'm desperate for first. I've also already pre paid for the CD Shining Art Edition, so I'm hoping it might have a few extra snippets in it! Make sure you post some cool photos of it when it arrives. I suspect there's a few of us on here that are very interested in seeing it in more detail. Congrats.

In your opinion what do you think the Overlook set is actually worth? $300 seems pretty ambitious?

Personally I wouldn't waste my time with it or buy one at any price. I can't see the attraction. Who is the artist, Bob?

From The Road to the Dark Tower:

The cover illustration was “Nort the Weedeater” by John Stewart, and six other Gunslinger-inspired Stewart works appeared in a folio section of the magazine. [footnote]

[footnote] In his editorial, Stuart David Schiff is unsure what art will illustrate the magazine’s cover, as Stewart’s illustration, sent out for four-color separation, was lost somewhere in transit. As a backup, Donald M. Grant and Michael Whelan gave Schiff permission to use one of the Grant edition illustrations, but the Stewart pictures must have materialized at the last minute.

Not very happy with the condition of the first lot of UK 1st editions I received from across the pond. Pretty much all with the exception of one isn't anything like it was descripted. So, I'm inquiring to see if you guys know of a seller US or UK based that would be good to contact to get the books I'm waiting or that you've had success with in the past. Thanks!

Yeah I feel ya. It's been quite the pain to get UK 1sts over here in one piece.

Or where the text block doesn't look like it was read while changing motor oil or eating fried chicken.

This is a long shot, but does anyone have an extra Cycle of the Werewolf, Land of Enchantment dust jacket in F or NF condition? Mine is ratty with tears and a hole in one spot, the book is fine and bought at a great price, would love to replace that DJ however.

Now that is a long shot. So many of the dustjackets have issues, ie., speckling and fading. If it exists then someone here likely has it though. Good luck!

Scratch that. I have several regular ones, and only a couple B&N ones.

The King signed ones are $225 each.
The unsigned are $265 for regular, and $285 for the B&N.

Um, maybe I'm missing something here but you want $285 for an unsigned B&N variant?

Methinks Mr Flagg is being funny. There are a LOT of signed Revivals, so having an unsigned one is the rarity....

ISO- DT VI Song of Susannah Grant AE. I know there are some signed trades floating around but I am looking for the original AE edition. I've seen some for about $200 which seems pricey, there's one on Ebay right now for a set with this and DT VII. Don't need VII so might see if they'll break it up if it doesn't sell. Wanted to check here first though!

I'd call that fair. They were flat for a long while, but prices are starting to pick up for the AE's
