I am looking for the UK trade paperback of DOCTOR SLEEP.

Anyone have a 1st /1st Firestarter they want to get rid of cheap? Just looking for something decent, even with no jacket is fine, as long as book is decent. Not looking to pay a lot obviously.
PM me if you have something
Thanks

No one has an extra not so great copy of this?

Hodder always does a simultaneous trade paperback that is NOT available in the UK, only airports and places like Ireland, etc. I always manage to get one but it's not always easy. No luck so far on DOCTOR SLEEP, although I do have the Australian version reserved.

Thanks, I was not aware of that fact. Good to know. I learn something new each and every day on TDT.Org!!!

For instance, in addition to the "Hodder" thing, I learned that James is a real wise-ass!!! Very close to my heart!!! LOL LOL LOL Just fooling about, James!!!

I'm curious too. So far I've only seen the version that we have in our Proofs Catalog: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Stephen+King+Manuscripts+Proofs +and+ARCs:Doctor+Sleep

Which has the statement 'advance uncorrected proof' but to me looks more like what I would define as an ARC (because it has the cover art in place already).

My guess is that either you got an earlier state that none of us has seen yet and you will then need to find the version we have in the Catalog (although it's technically not an ARC), OR you got the version we know - and in that case I don't expect there to be another state that is available to collectors.

Did that make sense? :)

I was able to work from the material CD had for the limited edition, so I didn't push for getting a proof from Scribner. By the time I asked for one, they had the finished copies, so that's what they sent me.

Guys, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but having shipped heavy books from the UK to the States before, I can tell you that getting 3 or 4 copies shipped together won't be any cheaper. It'll actually be more expensive. Once you go over 2 kg the airmail prices get ridiculous. Royal Mail pass it onto Parcel Force over a certain weight and they charge stupid amounts. A recent example: The 2 volume Gift Edition of The Talisman cost me around $70 to ship to the USA. It may work out better if you get your copies individually. Good luck though.

Though I do not necessarily agree, the community at large values them at a little less than the market value for a numbered copy. Maybe 5-10% less. I happen to think they are a little more special, but that is just a personal opinion and in the minority.

Jimimck
10-17-2013, 12:30 AM
Yeah PC's are a tricky bunch. In the end I think it comes down to the purchaser. To some, PC's are worth more if they are trying to complete a set of them etc. Other collectors see them as poorer cousins to their numbered counterparts.

In the end, its the same book, same signature, no number. Personally, if I could buy a numbered or a PC at the same time, with both being offered at the same price, I'd choose the numbered edition. But for the right price, or if I couldn't find a numbered edition of something specific I was looking for, I'd be happy with a PC in my collection.

Most people usually want the numbered and lettered editions more and unless sold out and rare, usually the PC copies will go for about 25% - 50% less with other authors. With King usually about 10% - 20% less unless somebody really wants it bad or very tough to find. But your mileage will vary they say.

i dont like PC editions. i have two. i dont know why. it is just not the same. i just dont like them. I have a PC copy of Six Stories and a PC copy of twttk.

In most cases, PC editions are basically the same book. Printer overrruns are a longtime thing due to the stupid "over/under" policy of most printers - as well as protection against damaged or faulted books. (Some use them for reviews or promotions as well). Some might not have signature pages, some might have some slight damage, some might be extras in mint shape just were "in case" copies. Technically they aren't part of the numbered or lettered run, but are still part of the complete run overall. In most cases it's usually just a handful or PC copies that exist outside of the # run or whatever (although there have been some publishers who have totally taken advantage of that and did a lot more and exploited it - anyone remember the Dark Harvest fiasco?)

I don't mind them myself. I tend to get a number of them from publishers either in trade for ads, etc. and I resell and/or trade some. I have needed the ad money for DD and the publisher needs the publicity but might not have extra money for it. So it works for both of us. And somebody usually wants most of them - especially if the book is out of print and tough to find, or at least wants the cheaper copies. I do understand why some collectors wouldn't want them though.

The thing that bugs me is when a publisher does a numbered signed/limited run and it sells out and then they do another signed/# run of exactly the same book to capitalize. All of a sudden instead or 250, 500, 1000 or whatever you now have twice that numbered and the first book is devalued.

I'm sure Randall Flagg would know quite a bit about current pricing as well.
I haven't heard of one selling for less than $4900 in quite awhile, although I'm admittedly not really in the game much anymore.

How hard do you guys think it would be to get my hands on a publishers copy in mint shape of Gunslinger? I have an uncomplete-able set and thought that would fit nicely and still be the off white with the signatures... ?? And if I found one... what would you pay for it?
$5,500.

I'm looking for the Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine, October 1978 edition, with the first Gunslinger story.

Hoping to find a nice, label free copy for a decent price to compete my set.

Cheers

You and me both, brother.

I hope you find it. The other four aren't as hard to find. That first one, in good shape and at a good price, has been hard to find for me.

11-14-2013, 01:37 AM
ok, so on my journey back from Paris I thought long and hard about what I'm collecting. I have decided that the most important aspect is to complete the set of 1st/1st's and for the DT series I'd like these to be all Artist Signed. SO...

I now have a F/NF Gunslinger 1st Ed, 2nd printing (Grant marked "Second Edition") that is flatsigned by Stephen King. (you can see pictures of it being signed in the Paris thread). What I would like is to trade for a 1st/1st in similar condition, preferably signed by Michael Whelan. So all of you with large collections and multiple Gunslinger 1st/1sts - what d'ya say? Does everyone agree this is a fair trade or is there a major disparity between values here?

Update: There is currently an ebay sale in process for the exact item I am looking for (starting @ $750), I have just contacted the seller to see if he is open to trade.

Here is an picture of Steve signing the book (for those that cant find the thread):

I (along with some others on this forum) find it less daunting to set some boundaries on what is a *complete* collection. For me it is only Hard cover editions so the Bachman paperbacks are out of my scope. (at least for now...) I have enough problems finding $$ for Carrie and 'Salem's Lot without worrying about trying to explain over $1000 for 4 paperbacks to my wife!!

There's no magic to it - when CD announced Dr. Sleep was going up for sale, the date was well known here on the board. Then you just went to the website and placed an order. If someone is going to make a Mr. Mercedes S/L, the info will be posted on the board well before it goes up for sale. It won't just pop up one morning without us knowing.

There are exceptions, like Joyland. How many knew ahead of time. Several long time collectors here missed out due to lack of notice, but generally we know ahead of time. I hope it's CD, not only for the great production, but they give the collectors club a little extra notice.

Just because they haven't announced it, doesn't mean it will not be CD. The fact is, we don't know yet. I'm sure there are some who know who will make one, if at all, but can't say due to contracts and so forth.

There are exceptions, like Joyland. How many knew ahead of time. Several long time collectors here missed out due to lack of notice, but generally we know ahead of time. I hope it's CD, not only for the great production, but they give the collectors club a little extra notice.
All the more reason to check the site at least 6 times a day.

Yes, this. And Jerome, the morning of Joyland I almost didn't get on here that day. For some reason I casually checked and saw heavy discussion and was able to pick up two S/L's. Very grateful to the site and members that day.

Looking for a fine A Game of Thrones first edition for my 20 year old sisters Christmas present. I have no idea how much these are going for, so while I think I want one I need to understand the cost first before confirming a purchase.

If you have one, could you let me know what it may cost to post to New Zealand when sending me your asking price.

Cheers ears.

Although mine is not for sale, the range for a 1st has been anywhere from $150-$450. I would say $250-$300 is a fair price. The foil cover gets damaged easily, so if it is really Fine and unread, you would probably pay a bit more.

I agree on the $250 -$300 for a nice copy. Also agree that if its really fine its worth a little more cause there wicked hard to find without some wear to the dj, especially top and bottom of spine.

get her a Dance with dragons 1st/1st signed. Much more affordable and still a great collectible.

Merlin1958
11-28-2013, 06:17 PM
I would love a shot at Mr Mercedes in a S/L without having to pay more for it, like I would have to in order to get Dr. Sleep:(, who is publishing it and how do you get a opportunity at a limited folks? thanks!

Plus, you can look forward to a real great cyber event on TDT.Org, "King S/L day"!!!! Usually a real blast and members seem to always find a way to avert the dreaded "order site crash"!!! Go back and check out the "Joyland", "The Shining", "TWTTKH" and "Dr. Sleep" S/L threads around the order dates and see for yourself. Good stuff!!!

P.S. There actually is a "little magic" involved in certain cases. Member's here have discovered "back door's" on several occasions to process an order when the host site goes invariably crashing down.. You'll only get that here, on TDT.Org!!!

Well all... I have done what I had to do... needed that total matching set. I worked out a great deal with our good friend David at Betts and I am now the owner of a complete matching set.. one of the 66.... I am number #459 I will not have them for a bit as money does not grow on tress but it was too good to pass up. The Dark Tower has been my favorite set of books and to have them all signed (including the elusive first one) in perfect shape.. plus 4 others that match??? Had to do it. Saying this... I am now putting mine up for sale.

Mine is a matching set from The Waste Lands (DT#3) and up in #576. The set (as you can see in my collections thread) is mint and perfect from DT#2 and up. The Gunslinger is a 1st/1st and has just the hint of shelf wear only. The Drawing of the Three is a 1st/1st and the number #576 is out there, I also have Desperation in #576 as well if you would like to add that to the collection.... I am open to offers... I can send more pictures if you like, you may also pay by Pay Pal and you do NOT have to use the gift option... This way you are protected in every way if for some reason you are not satisfied. You have 45 days to contact Pay Pal if there is a problem to get your money back. The books are all sealed but I had this done professionally for moisture etc and is not the original sealing. Any other questions... please ask.. and PM me if you have a reasonable offer!! Thanks guys

not sure if this is the right place for this (mods feel free to move) but other than the first four Bachman paperbacks, are there any other PB's that are considered the first edition of the book?
I'm thinking Joyland is a possibility?

Ok, been through the first editions section and I reckon the only PB 'true' 1st editions are:

Rage
The Long Walk
Roadwork
The Running Man
The Green Mile set
Creepshow
Umney's Last Case
Joyland

Anyone have a different opinion? assume from the point of view of "Complete collection of US Firsts"....

Titan publishes Hard Case Crime. They state that the hardcover release date was a week after the softcover.

True, I have always considered my "Hodder & Stoughton" copy a 1/1, but that is just MHO and subject to my hate for PB's. You are right though, there is no price on my U.K. TDT IV hence, the PB was the true 1/1. My bad!!! Thanks for correcting me, John.

There are probably cases of simultaneous publication where that is less clear cut, but I don't keep track of those instances.
