I don't get it : "Stephen King slammed for 'cruel' joke about Melania Trump's kidney surgery"

No he is not.
He said : "Not to be snarky, but Melania can probably use a week’s rest from Blabbermouth Don. Sounds heavenly to me."

He's glad that she has a week away from Donald. How is that a cruel joke about her surgery?

Their attack on him is proof he’s successfully goading the right. It wasn’t even a joke about her really. Just a clever slam on his current nemesis.

Never ask people without a clue to use reason to approach their world. They won't get it. They don't even understand that they are unreasonable.

The funniest part to me was the responses. These people dug deep into their rhetorical skills to come up with these gems:

Where is the civility?

Cruel, shame!

How disgraceful

Are they describing Trump or King's comment?

It's hard to tell with hypocrites.

I envy your ability to laugh at the hypocrisy. Honestly, I really do. I can’t see more than a couple comments like that without my blood boiling, eventually saying something I regret (like this reply possibly, in some way). I’m just glad I’m able to ignore it most of the time. Might be a coward’s way out but what’s the point when, as you eloquently stated, they are unreasonable? Dammit. I promised myself I wouldn’t engage in political discussions here. I have good friends on both sides of this fence and I’ve lost too many arguing about this shit storm.

What line did King cross?

Apparently by making a joke that wasn’t the “best look” for him.

I engage in political or news discussions on the appropriate threads. I'm very left wing, and I'm brutally honest. Others have other positions. I try to keep it separate from my collecting relationships. I've been largely successful at that.

Not at all. He didn't make a joke about Melania. He made a joke about Trump and her relationship with him. Everyone knows they don't have a good relationship. The saddest part about the whole affair is that King is likely correct. Melania was able to have some necessary surgery and get away from Trump for a week.

Speaking of commentary that drives me nuts, a few hours ago someone posted on the largest Stephen King fan group on Facebook (75K members) that they’re giving away all their King books because of this. I could understand someone doing this if King actually said something as disrespectful as they’re making it out to be, but come on, it was one of the many jabs he throws at Trump. Nothing more. Anyway, I’m done following this story.

on Philip Roth's best book (NY Times Book Review (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/25/books/philip-roths-best-book.html))

"American Pastoral” is one of the five best novels I have ever read, maybe the best. It is muscular storytelling complemented by characters — especially Swede Levov — who burn their way into one’s memory. The scope is relatively small, but the ambition is epic. Few can handle the passing years as well as Roth does here. It ranks with the greatest of American fiction.

Tommy

Not one vote for The Plot Against America. That and American Pastoral and maybe Portnoy's Complaint would be the best I've read from Roth. Admittedly I have some catching up to do.

There should always be a way..... given the will.

Owen told the story during Sleeping Beauties tour noting how when he started recording War and Peace, he started out on cassettes however since it took quite some time to complete, the last parts wound up on CD's or DVD's.

https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/people/article/78359-susan-moldow-retires.html

Susan Moldow, president of the Scribner Publishing Group and publisher of Touchstone, will retire at the end of the year, Simon & Schuster president and CEO Carolyn Reidy announced in a letter to staff.

Moldow's career in publishing began with an internship at Workman Publishing in 1966. She then entered a trainee program at Doubleday after graduating college in 1967. She left Doubleday in 1971 and joined Pocket Books, where she worked at Washington Square Press before joining Avon Books from 1976 to 1981.

She went on to hold senior positions in editorial management at Dell Publishing, Penguin Books, Doubleday, and HarperCollins before returning to Simon & Schuster in 1994, shortly after the Macmillan acquisition. Back at S&S, she reorganized Charles Scribner’s Sons, Macmillan, and Atheneum into the Scribner imprint. In 2012, Moldow was named president of the Scribner Publishing Group; she was named Touchstone’s publisher in 2013.

Under Moldow, Scribner has published authors and bold-faced names such as George H.W. Bush, Anthony Doerr, Angela Duckworth, Janet Evanovich, S.C. Gwynne, Charles Johnson, Chuck Klosterman, Phil Knight, Rachel Kushner, John le Carré, Frank McCourt, Siddhartha Mukherjee, Reynolds Price, Annie Proulx, Kathy Reichs, Geneen Roth, Lisa See, Andrew Solomon, Colm Tóibín, Jeannette Walls and Stephen King. Reidy, in her letter, also noted that Moldow has, during her tenure, overseen "multiple editions updating our venerable Joy of Cooking franchise" as well as Scribner's relations with the Fitzgerald and Hemingway estates.

"To talk with Susan, whether one-on-one or in a meeting when she is giving one of her trademark, carefully composed and enthusiastically delivered presentations, is always an adventure," Reidy wrote. "No matter the subject, or the book involved, she is always ready with an arch remark or self-deprecating quip, demonstrating her encyclopedic knowledge of the publishing marketplace and her love for what we do."

A few new things I haven't seen mention here yet:

-King has a one page contribution to the book, "The Book Club Journal", a recommended reading list, published by "2018 Independent Bookstore Day". I scored by copy on eBay. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5231f673e4b0833bcd11793b/t/5a98698f9140b7ca15ab260a/1519937940990/IBD+Book+Club.jpg?format=750w

-Unnerving Magazine #8, the "Inspired by Stephen King" issue, with very short interviews and pieces on King by Lilja, Stu Tinker, Richard Chizmar and more, featuring King on the cover. https://www.unnervingmagazine.com/ (I bought my copy on Amazon)

-A new hardcover of Pet Semetary has been released by Scribner to coincide with the upcoming new version of the film. Most likely for completeists only as I don't think there is any new content offered here: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Sematary-Stephen-King/dp/1982112395/ref=sr_1_1_twi_har_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1544826274&sr=8-1&keywords=stephen+king+pet+semetary

https://kdvr.com/2019/04/23/stephen-kings-1974-job-attempt-in-boulder/

Among the 200,000 items located inside the historic Carnegie Library in Boulder is a letter from famed author Stephen King.

King wrote the letter to the Boulder Daily Camera in 1974 with hopes of becoming the newspaper's film critic.

"So the letter reads: Dear Sir, enclosed are a couple movie reviews. One of them is playing now in Boulder and one which will be playing shortly,” said Hope Arculin, a digital archivist at the library, who read the letter.

The letter goes on to explain why having a film critic would’ve been valuable for the Daily Camera.

“I think the city paper could use occasional movie reviews, both for the amusement of the paper’s readers and as a thumbnail guide for area moviegoers” it reads.

King then talks about his qualifications.

“I’m a professional writer,” he said. “(novelist contracting at present with Doubleday and Company with a book called CARRIE out in hardcover now”.

He goes on to talk about his love for movies.

“I don’t want to write snotty avant-garde reviews of obscure foreign films, but I would like the chance to shake down what’s playing at the Boulder or the Fox or the Basemar Twin Cinemas once or twice a week,”

King then ended things on a funny note.

“I hope you’re interested,” he wrote. “And by the way, I work cheap”.

It’s unclear if the Boulder Daily Camera ever responded to King’s inquiry.

The letter is on file at the Carnegie Library in Downtown Boulder.

Pet Sematary exhumed (https://ew.com/movies/2019/03/29/pet-sematary-stephen-king-interview/): Stephen King looks back at his most disturbing story

[A version of this story appears in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, on stands Friday]

Thanks for posting. I found the article on EW.com. Very informative.

I miss your essays on all Kings books. Any thought of continuing them with out CHIZMAR? It was a nice feature. And I love the historical context.

I have six essays on deck waiting to go; waiting for Rich to find time to proceed.

Have you written anything about Bag of Bones. Just got a press kit/flyer from Pasiak and they were talking about it being the next BIG king book. But I believe it underperformed. Am I remembering that correctly? I really like the story, but it does not appear to get much attention!

Brillant! Would love to read those attached reviews.

They can be found online, as well as the letters, on Daily Camera's website. I made a pdf of them four years ago

We're not quite to Bag of Bones -- it was a big deal because it was his first book with Scribner and reflected something of a change of style. I don't think it under-performed at all. It won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 1998, and the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1999.

"Despite a hurricane that closed many stores in the southeast the first weekend on sale, the book debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestsellers list."

Good to know! I was curious and I knew who to ask! So what is his least successful novel? Or should I say underperforming novel? My least favorite book is regulators. Saw the whole story coming a mile away. But I LOVED desperation!

Thanks for the reply!

He has eschewed public appearances of late. Marsha (King's assistant) mentioned to me that King wants to spend his time writing and not signing books, or doing tours etc.

All that could change when his new novel comes out, but I wouldn't be surprised if he only does a morning show the day of release. In fact, I'd be shocked (but pleased) if he did a major tour for the book.

"Exoneration" ain't a bad term to use when the case against you falls apart to the point that the investigating prosecutor declines to recommend charges (the only thing Mueller actually had the power to do - and he chose not to).

You're being disingenuous, maybe intentionally, I don't know, but Mueller could not indict due to the memo against indicting a sitting president. He specifically said if the President did not commit a crime, they would say so. But they could not say so, because they could not say he did commit a crime. There's no third option.

So presumption of innocence in the lack of sufficient evidence right? You know the whole foundation our legal system sits on.

I’m not sure that makes any sense. So the guy hired to investigate Trump, and bring charges if necessary finds nothing and states so in his report. Then “legal experts” disagree with a distinguished official and say if not for the report they would have indicted him? What?

I think that people need to come to terms with the fact there was nothing. He said as much and Mueller found as much. It’s completely ridiculous.

Oh. How cute. Must be taken from the Trump move of calling names if people point out the truth. Although it actually could be appropriate for Trumpers who don't believe the truth even when it hits them in the face.

And yes, as someone who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, it bothers me greatly to see our laws flaunted, disrespected and broken.

I'm pretty confident that among the "majority of people" who haven't read the report are the likes of De Niro and Laurence Fishburne and most every Hollywood celebrity. My point isn't political as I could care less what these Hollywood types think. It is to point out the hubris of celebrities lecturing people on subjects upon which they have no greater insight than anyone else. This is code for everyone should agree with their views and the only reason the average person does not is because they are ignorant hillbillies who haven't read the report. It's the kind of ersatz elitist nonsense that helped get Trump elected in the first place.

I liked how everyone was just casually smoking on TV back then.

Everyone casually smoked everywhere back in the day. My mother, bless her heart, had a smoke before going into labor with me. Standing ashtrays in every hall of the hospital. Unbelievable now.

News anchors smoked, Johnny Carson smoked in the early days and guests were allowed to smoke.

If your parents would agree to it and sign a paper, you were allowed to smoke in high school at designated areas.

I flew over the ocean in 1994 and had a smoke or two myself (I've since quit).

I feel so sorry for all the non-smoking people that had to put up with that for decades.

I mean, you could even smoke in movie theaters.

Cell phones seem to have taken the place of that particular addiction now. I don't know which is worse....

I did love King's line about how anyone can quit smoking but it takes a brave man to face lung cancer.

I remember in the grocery store I worked in as a teen, sweeping the floor two times a shift just to get all the discarded butts out of the aisles.

Cigarette butts left right there, in the aisles? One of the things I've never understood is how smokers can/could just toss the butts absolutely anywhere and it's okay. WTF; it's littering.

Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise from IT) appeared this morning prior to King discussing his role in IT 2.

Stephen King was the last guest this morning responding to typical questions, "What scares you". The interview about The Institute was very brief with no new info shared. Steve mentioned his ability to write about children comes from listening and observing his own kids when young and now his grandkids. He mentioned The Institute is dedicated to his three Grandsons.

I thought it was particularly strange in The Institute when the gun toting townsfolks exercise their second amendment rights to fight off the evil government agents. It was like something straight out of an NRA fantasy. I almost couldn't believe King would write that.

The apology for having accidentally tweeted the equivalent of "the sun rises in the east" not long ago. The left eats its own, and the beat goes on.

King says (in part): "Where am I in this diversity discussion? ...white, male, old and rich. "

I know a few people that fit that description, but none are wildly talented and successful writers...seems relevant, but in these woke days of quotas, merit and ability are irrelevant.

The apology for having accidentally tweeted the equivalent of "the sun rises in the east" not long ago. The left eats its own, and the beat goes on.

While I certainly don't think that there should be a 'diversity quota' for Oscars there were still numerous acclaimed films by and starring women/POC that were left out. 'The Farewell' is a prime example. Trying to suggest that it just so happens that the majority of awards go to old white people because they deserved it the most and complaining that people want minorities to be recognized is completely tone-deaf.

But King was hardly cancelled for it and people stopped caring less than a week later so it's hardly a case of "the left [eating] its own". People disagreed with him and moved on.

seems relevant, but in these woke days of quotas, merit and ability are irrelevant.

That's absurd. Just because people are recognizing more diverse voices doesn't mean that merit is irrelevant. Are you going to suggest 'Parasite' only received the accolades it did because of a diversity quota?

I merely addressed King's evaluation of himself.

When you make comments like "in these woke days of quotas, merit and ability are irrelevant" you aren't.

"Vote for good movies, don't vote for skin colors or genitals" is completely disingenuous when there's an inherent bias towards white penis. The Farewell was one of the best reviewed films of the year (98% at Rotten Tomatoes) and had already won a Golden Globe but it was snubbed.

I follow King on social media. The initial tweet blew over in less than a week. Right now the biggest King-related discussion I've seen on Twitter is whether or not 'The Stand' is happening IRL.

King didn't have to do this. Anyone who thinks that King was in danger of being cancelled and this was a desperate attempt to "appease the libs" or whatever are completely overstating the severity of what happened.

Thanks Bev. Not the typical SK interview. Some really good questions and responses.

Bev, was this published in yesterdays paper or will it be this coming Sunday? I don't see it in this weeks NYT Magazine.

Dunno -- could be a web exclusive. There's no notice at the bottom like there usually is if the article also appears in the print edition.

Did anyone see King on the Late show yesterday? Looks like he wasn't on from the lack of clips of it...

Yesterday, when I looked at the show's website a few hours after your news, I couldnt find any reference to King...

The listing is now gone but I used the Wayback Machine and this is what it looked like yesterday (without the photos)

Intriguing. I remember looking yesterday and being surprised that I couldnt see anything related to King.
I would tend to guess that it had been postponed or moved. After all, the 28th was the release date up until a few weeks ago..

Might be or he might have had some problems connecting from home...

On the SKMB, Marsha said, "We're still waiting to hear the air date. They'd originally planned for it to be on last night but they don't want to cut his piece so are waiting for a night when they can air more of it."
