Job is mine. I signed the contract late Friday. I start Monday. Need to train on their systems for a short while. Eventually move to nights...they are now talking 2am-10am...3 days (M-W) in the city and T-F work from home. I'll go with that cause I can still do Betts on a more limited basis but during other people's "normal" business hours.

Great that you have it!
I did the 2am-11am shift for a year (~1979) working frozen food in a grocery store-the old days, no doors, no covers just 2 cold cold aisles.
It was tough. I'm sure you will persevere, and fortunately you can do 2 days at home.
Congrats!

Thank you all.

I put a post on the Inventory page of Betts Books trying to explain to people that I will continue to run Betts as best as I can while also holding down another job. Please read it and tell me if my message is clear enough. Thank you.

And thanks again to all of you. YOU are my core customer base, so I know you will understand if it takes me awhile to respond to an email or an extra day to ship out a book. It's nice to know that my customers will support me.

No problem. I am one of two Supervisory Analysts/Editors. There is a day guy and a night guy as there are 13 analysts (3 in China) that will submit reports at any time. I am the night guy to process reports that come in during the night and also to be on hand to process what happens/getspublished surrounding the Morning Meeting and quick notes the analysts put out after one of their company's announces some news.

I have a pretty large new consignment coming in this weekend. Guy is driving across the country to drop off all of his books...in the tens of thousands of $$. Lots of proofs, some Lettereds, some signed proofs etc. With this new job, it will take me awhile to organize it all and post it, but it's a couple hundered books easy.

Stay tuned

Which lettereds are you still missing (other than THE GUNSLINGER)? You own quite an impressive number already.

Oh, and I saw your Dan Simmons books - do you also actively 'collect' him (or any other authors)? Just curious, you know me.

Quite a lot of King lettered still to get. Firestarter, Danse Macabre and Eyes of the Dragon are top of my wants list.

I have been buying lettered versions of other authors recently because there are no King books for me to buy. I have large monthly budget set aside for books which has hardly been touched this year.

It's not just lettereds I'm after. I would prefer pre-Carrie stuff, but it never comes up for sale.

Congrats as well on your new position. You can see photos of the lettered edition on the King Collectibles Catalog on this site.

I don't have many King lettered editions either. Only 3 of his novels, the rest that are lettered are King anthologies. I agree with Mr Rt, they don't come up for sale very often.

Just want to post some kudos for David's packing. I received a box of books from Betts via the USPS and my heart fell. The box was VERY smashed up - 2 corners actually caved in a few inches. :( I was scared to open it and was already thinking about how I'd tell him about the books being damaged.

** BUT **

The most excellent news is that because of the way David meticulously wrapped the books in bubble pack and put crushed paper around them, there was absolutely NO dammage to the books whatsoever!!! *Doing the happy dance!!*

Thank you SO MUCH, David!!! :D

I think being a collector myself, I kinda go over the top in packing. For instance, I just shipped a 50 pound Knowing Darkness book to the West Coast...we all know how many were damaged when they were initially sent out. Well, this baby was triple boxed with hard foam cushoning on all 4 corners. It made the trip just fine!

My packing is not fool proof....I regret to say that UPS "totaled" the Legends: Gunslinger AP remarqued print I sent to Pam...

I was bummed, for sure, but that wasn't your fault, David. The tube was sturdy, it just got crushed. Looked like something heavy fell it, maybe something in the back of the UPS truck? Or it got stepped on with heavy shoes, maybe. Nothing you could have done there. Not.A.Thing.

Was the print damaged?

Oh yes. Whatever happened to the tube, it crushed down on the print. When we unrolled it - there were crinkles down one whole side of the print, and the ends got pushed up into the top of the tube when the print got crushed. David wasn't kidding - I'd consider it totaled as well.

Dear Friends and Constant Readers,

It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I assume the role of caretaker of Bett’s Books. My predecessor, Stuart Tinker, has held the position for nearly 20 years, and he is a well-known and respected figure in the Stephen King community. I would like to thank Stu for his dedication over the past years and for inspiring in so many of us a passion for all things Stephen King. My first King collectible was purchased from Stu almost 15 years ago. Stu and I plan to complete the formal transfer of ownership during the next several weeks.

Bett’s Books is synonymous with authenticity, quality and service, and I intend to uphold these values as the new owner. One of my long-term goals is to help expand people’s knowledge and appreciation for the literary works of Stephen King and to be an advocate for reading in general. I also plan to continue my support of The Haven Foundation, a national, nonprofit organization making grants to freelance writers and artists experiencing career-threatening trauma.

I simply could not be more delighted to be the new proprietor of Bett’s Books, and I look forward to providing you with the utmost care and consideration. I have several ideas for taking the business in new directions, so stay tuned!

Yay! Congrats David!
Hey I wasn't around back in the day but I still wanna celebrate!

P.S. I thought his name was David Betts for the longest time ... lol

I am in the process of starting a small remarque project with noted artist Jill Bauman (Dead Zone Easton Press edition and lately Full Dark No Stars Gift/S/L editions. She illustrated the story "Big Driver." When details of an impending sale are known, I will pass them along to you.

Yipee!!. Another remarque project. I am so excited!.

Dear Friends-

It is with saddened heart that I must tell you that my mother passed away Saturday morning. I arrived in Des Moines very late Friday evening and was able to see her before she left us. Even though I was not able to speak with her, I felt like I had some closure with her several days earlier after her first fall and initial hospitalization. Thank you friends for your good wishes and for holding my mother, myself, and my family in your generous hearts. Family arrives here tomorrow and the service is Wednesday morning. Here are the particulars:

A memorial service for Dorothy Williamson will be conducted on Wednesday, June 08, at Grace Lutheran Church (3010 52nd Street, Des Moines, IA 50310, (515) 276-6873). We respect and acknowledge those who may desire to attend, but may not be able to do so; and we share and respect your support. The viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m.

This is from David on the Betts site:

Hurricane Irene Hits New England Hard! I am now without power (electricity, phone, cable, internet) since early Sunday morning. I am updating this site and message from a local wifi connection at Dunkin Donuts. My family and I are safe, we got our son to Ithaca College on Saturday and drove back home into the initial effects of Hurricane Irene, reaching home just a few hours before roads became impassable. A neighbor down the street had 2 100 foot trees fall on their house and a gazillion power lines came down as a result. About 35% of my town still has no power and 5 million people on East Coast are without power. They say it could be MANY days before it is fully restored. So I am performing my Midnight to 10am work shift for my "real" job from the local Dunkin Donuts. GREAT FUN, let me tell you. In the meantime, there is no bottled water, ice, etc to be found anywhere near here. We have lost the entire contents of our fridge and 2 freezers. So....until my power comes back on, Betts business will have to wait...orders and email responses cannot go forward at present unless I can find time on my work shift. I had a small break in time in the wee hours this morning so thought I'd better get SOMETHING up on the website so all of you know that my family and I are fine but facing some difficult conditions. Thank you!!!!

I love all the know-nothings who blather about Irene being a "bust," I guess because it didn't wipe Boston off the map...people have been without power a lot of places for days...Vermont's a mess...it wasn't the worst storm ever, but it was a bad one!

Thank you for all of your support everyone!!! Life is beginning to get back to normal. I have a gazillion emails to try to catch up on and hopefully there are a few orders in there! So, even if you sent an email 3 weeks ago, be patient, I'm slowly getting there.

On a side note, I'd like to get opinions (good or bad) on this...

I like Neil Gaiman very much as an author. I also know that he has been fairly prolific in his writings....addressing the children's, adult and graphic novel markets. One of my kids had to read The Graveyard Book as an assignment and I read it too and loved it (as I did Anansi Boys). It seems there is a pretty solid collectibles market out there for Gaiman. I have purchased several limited editions, signed first editions and signed proof copies of some of his work recently.

My question to you is this....How do you think I might fare if I added Gaiman as an "in stock" author at Betts? I would try to carry some of the S/Ls, signed firsts, proofs etc of both adult and children's books. What a GREAT way to introduce your own children to the collecting world by owning a S/L Coraline or The Graveyard Book as well as a copy you can read to them/with them.

Just a thought....would love to hear input.

David,

Neil Gaiman makes up a lot of my collection. I have about 20 S/L editions/anthologies, all 1/1 copies of his adult books and most of the kids books, chapbooks, etc. Had you started selling his books last year, I may have gotten them from you. There is definitely a market for some of the higher end S/L editions, particularly the Hill House books. As for signed firsts...I think I'd put him in the same group as I do Joe Hill. There is no shortage of signed firsts, as he does a lot of signings. Dreamhaven Books (http://neilgaiman.net) is considered one the best places to get Gaiman books, so you may want to see what they have as a comparison.

I think Betts could be much more than just the place to go for Stephen King items. I am a fan of reading and collecting Stephen King, but if a rare/unique/interesting item catches my eye, I'm going to buy it. So ... stock all the rare/unique/interesting items you can, and see how it goes.

BUT, with that being said I don't think you should ever stop becoming PRIMARILY Stephen King-related and/or THE place to go for SK stuff. :)

I think it is a great idea! But as we discussed before, we have to get someone to work on your website! It is hard enough to go line through line -- adding authors (more than 1!) should be in the expansion plan. I collect Joe Hill, Stephen King and Michael Connolly. You do alot of consignment -- you could add popular fiction artists Grisham, etc...... You have become a trusted sources in grading, pricing and distributing... you go to abebooks and they want top dollar for junk! I know because i bought some very misrepresented books! Your prices are fair and you are easy to deal with! Any missing books, i am waiting for you, i quit that ebay and others....

I'm working on David's website, and the core is already designed and working. But due to lack of time, I've been unable to move all the "books" to the new database (all entries have to be inserted one by one).

Glad to hear your situation has improved.

As others have stated, I would enjoy seeing your inventory expand to include other authors.
I also collect Neil Gaiman, my wife and I have attended events/signings several times.
My Grandaughter Annie and I read the Graveyard Book together, taking turns reading out loud to each other.

Back on point, I think it would be great to see you carry Gaiman's books.

Right now, I am working on completing an Elmore Leonard first/first collection, so if you want to add him also....

On David's website he wrote (11/12/11) :

I am about to post pictures of two AWESOME King-related collectibles.

A die-hard King fan/collector and expert woodworker (Dick Olson) has recently released new, unique and fine Collectible cases for your First Trade Edition of “The Shining". Artists Glenn Chadbourne and Erin Wells have produced hand signed and Lettered, full-color original art pieces that have been carefully affixed to the inside lid of each custom, hand-made wooden tray case, designed to hold the US or UK Trade 1st edition of Stephen King's "The Shining". Each artist has created 26 "Lettered" art pieces for this series. Each art piece is based upon a scene from "The Shining". Engraved in the wooden cover of each and every Tray Case, is an Erin Wells piece featuring The Overlook Hotel and Topiary Interior Art: A-Z Will Be Glenn Chadbourne Originals! AA-ZZ Will Be Erin Wells Originals! Letter Z and ZZ were Reserved For Charity Auctions. Each unique case, made of fine streaked maple, bears the engraved original cover art, a Lettered piece from Glenn Chadbourne or Erin Wells and features a felt bed, ribbon pull and magnetic clasp. This is a stand-alone case. Dick Olson's (DOLSO) finely crafted Wooden Slip and Tray Cases are revered and treasured by Collectors. Here is your chance to own a unique, hand crafted collectible item, with original art by a renowned artist to hold your precious First edition of "The Shining."

I am guessing they have a lot of friends that entered the lottery for them.

One of my customers (and a member here) told me that he had family and friends enter him 58 times in the lottery and he got I believe 3 books.

If anyone has copies of the signed limited 11/22/63 thay want to sell, email me at david@bettsbooks.com.

At present, I have 14 people wanting the book and I believe I have 10 copies on their way to me so I'm short a few.

Just wanted to give a big Thumbs Up to David. I ordered some proofs a while ago and they arrived in perfect condition at my house today after crossing the Atlantic three times. Being the gentleman that he is, David upgraded it to Express Mail and added a free 1st/1st edition 11/22/63 to the package when it was erroneously sent back to him from The Netherlands.

Thank you, sir!!

"Updated 12-3 1:00pm

ATTENTION: Very soon I will be posting a couple of UNIQUE items newly on consignment. One of the items is a one-of-a-kind King Collectible, the only known complete set to exist in the world. This is just a teaser...I can tell you that it pertains to King's EARLIEST published writing...MORE SOON but I hope this gets you interested. Even if you do not buy this item, you are going to want to see these pictures, you may never see an item like this again....Is that enough of a tease? LOL"

Anyone wanna take a guess? If someone put a gun to my head I would have to guess the first four long-style Doubleday proofs. "The only know complete set ..." leads me to believe they are of the same "style", so it might be every King-involved issue of Cavalier but it wouldn't be "every pre-Carrie King-involved magazine" ... but owning all the Cavaliers isn't THAT THAT THAT crazy a thing to do, I would think ... I'm very curious.

I'm thinking it may be some of the high school papers that have King's writings in them--Drum.

The Drum, The Enterprise, The Maine Campus ...

Actually ... a collection of "King's Garbage Truck" articles would be QUITE excellent to have. If that's what it is ... I might have to break my "I'm not buying anything big" mentality for rthis instance, lol.

well, I'm pretty sure that it's NOT the Cavaliers..... since I and several others own them all already,
and while I only have one of the Drums (codename mousetrap) - I know that Bob has both of them.... so probably not that.

does Bob or any one have all four long in house proofs.... seems there's one that was rumored to exist... but not in a known collection?

intriguing for sure....

bob might be right about the comic reviews...

bob... do you own all the garbage trucks?

My guess is the full set of Maine Campus journals with the serialized story 'Slade'. If not, I agree with Bob.

None of us has the original "Slade". Bob has the Doubleday long proofs, but not the NEL ones.

FYI: There are 3 "Drums" with King content.
29 May 1964 Band Uniforms
27 Oct 1965 Codename Mousetrap
29 Jan 1966 The 43rd Dream

I could be mistaken, but I thought Bob was missing one of the long proofs.
