I have received a few questions on this so I thought I would throw out an explanation.

The Gallery (available in the toolbar) is so all of our members can host photos - like they would on imageshack or photobucket. It's an on-site way to do the same thing those sites do.

So anyone can use it. All photos loaded by members are under "Member Galleries" and can be searched by user name alphabetically.

As a special feature, there are "Special Content Galleries" that are being worked on.

One of the best (imo) is the Collections Special Content Gallery. In there, our collectors can upload their specific book collections into their own folder for ease of viewing by other members. This gallery is viewable to anyone who visits (guests) while the member galleries are only open to members.

Inside the Collections SCG are folders for each collector that has requested one so that they may upload their photos there for all to see.

This spot also drives our Collections Page (http://www.thedarktower.org/collections/) for the site. All of the photos in the individual folders are randomized for this page. Its pretty cool.

The Collections SCG is obviously its own folder and has a "root" which can be loaded to. I am noticing a lot of pictures on the root but I believe that may be because folks are unclear on how to use it.

I am happy to create a folder for any collector that does not have one out there if you guys would like.

Remember: This is not only a way to view the collections but to also "host" them so that links can then be posted here on the site in any thread or forum that you would like.

Please post questions as they come up.

I've seen lots of members ask how to include "stuff" in their posts, so here are some tips. I remember being confused about this when I joined, too. I use Internet Explorer, by the way, so I'm not sure if these steps will work for other browsers or for Mac users. Mods, please feel free to correct or add anything!

This may look complicated, but it's really really simple! (I'm just a little too detailed sometimes!) Once you do it a few times, you'll be a pro.

First, just a comment: If you want to check out what your post will look like before you actually post it, click on the "Go Advanced" button. This will let you preview it before you actually post it by clicking the "Preview Post" button. You don't have to be in Advanced mode to add links, pics, etc. - only if you want to verify what it looks like before submitting.

Links to other websites or web pages

The simplest way to add a link is to just type it in the text of your post (i.e., www.thedarktower.org (http://www.thedarktower.org)), but you need to be sure to include the www at the beginning for the link to work.
If you're on the web page you want to link, follow the steps below.

Click on the url in the address bar to highlight it in full. You can either right click and select copy OR use your keyboard by holding down the Ctrl key then hitting C.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep1-1.jpg~original
Go to the message window where you're typing your post and click on the "Insert Link" icon (it's the little "globe" one highlighted below).
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep2.jpg~original
In the popup window, put your cursor over the url. You can either right click and select paste OR use your keyboard by holding down the Ctrl key then hitting V.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep3.jpg~original
Click OK and you'll see the url in the post you're creating.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep4.jpg~original
It will look like your url will be posted twice, but notice how the second one is highlighted. If you want the actual url verbiage to show in your post, you're done! Here's what your post would look like.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep5.jpg~original
If, however, you'd like to replace the actual url verbiage with something else, while the text in your post is still highlighted, type what you want to actually post. What you type will replace the highlighted second url and will be the verbiage that shows up in your post.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep6.jpg~original
Here's what this version of the same post would look like. Clicking on either version would take you to the same page.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/urlstep7.jpg~original

Videos from YouTube
Click the insert video icon and paste the YouTube video URL into the box and click ok.
Pictures or non-TDT.com smilies
You have a few options here depending on the picture source. First of all, you can't add a pic that's stored directly on your computer. You'll need to open an online account (i.e., www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) or www.imageshack.com (http://www.imageshack.com)) or import them into your gallery here on TDT.com to include them in a post.

If your picture is included on a web page (including those here in your TDT.com gallery), you'll need to find the url for the picture/image source. By that I mean that if it's on a web page to go to the source of the picture itself - not the web page that includes it.

You can find it by right clicking on the picture in the web page and clicking Properties.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/imgstep1.jpg~original
Highlight the url from the picture Properties and copy it into a new window to confirm that it's just the pic. Some websites have restrictions and either redirect the window or won't allow you to access the source. This will also show you the true size of the picture itself.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/imgstep2.jpg~original
Once confirmed, copy the url as outlined above in the Links section but instead of using the "Insert Link" button, use the "Insert Image" button (it's the landscape-looking one highlighted below.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/IMG.jpg~original
You'll get a popup window just like when adding a link. Paste the url in the window and click OK. This adds image tags at the beginning and end of your url.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/imgstep3.jpg~original
You can also just paste the url directly into your post and manually add the image tags at the beginning and end: [ IMG] at the beginning and [ /IMG] at the end (you'll need to remove the spaces).

If you're using an image posted on Photobucket, they've already provided you with code that includes the image tags. Simply click on the IMG Code field, copy it, and paste it directly into your post. You'll get the same result as in the step above.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/gsvec/How%20To/imgstep4.jpg~original
One thing to remember about any pic you post is that if it's moved or renamed, it won't work any more. If you've created an online account with Photobucket or ImageShack or have uploaded pictures to your TDT.com gallery, don't move them or give them new names after you've posted them! :D

So do I understand correctly that the Collections Gallery is members only? Because I could see people maybe not wanting to advertise whose house to break into. :D

I also think it's totally cool to have all that in one place.

The "Special Content Galleries" are viewable to guests who visit the page. That includes the Collections folder.

If collectors would like their pictures to be secure, they need to post them in the members gallery as that can only be seen by members.

(but I still wouldn't call that real secure, we have over 2500 members)

The best way if a person is worried about it is to not post them at all.

Our Gallery is really a cool thing. Acts like a hosting site right here in our own back yard.

The page linked above draws on the images in that folder and randomly displays them so it's always filled with very fun collectibles.

I too can assist in creating a Collector thread for an individual. The pics will load quicker for members, and one will have a hosting site free of charge and hassle.

Gretchen did a nice job explaining how to post pictures, links, videos etc.
How to: Add info in posts (links, pics, videos, etc.) (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=6133)
When reading posts, it is much nicer to simply see a picture rather than have to click on a thumbnail of the image.
Please host pictures rather than an attach thumbnails.
If you have any additional questions please ask.

Can someone please explain to me how to post pics in my posts here?

I went to the FAQ and no help there, don't see a place to make a album in my profile, when I do a new/reply post don't see the place to add an attachment. I am so lost, please help.

Hello Christine, I'll try to answer this.
Go to the home page, and look on the left hand side
of the page, it will be with the gallery. Look there is a
upload photos thingy, see it? You can host all the photo's
you want here, or at another site like photobucket etc...
if you just want to add pics from a url click the little yellow
box above in the quick reply box (its sort of in the center-
and looks like it is a pic of mountains) from there you can
see that a permission box pops up that will accept ther url.
I hope my explaination helps you. I am the last person to
ask about these things...:wtf:
There is a how to thread somewhere around called
I think, ask the computer guy anything.
with general q& a's that answer all kinds of questions
Good luck with your project, and happy posting!

The post Jerome linked in the first post on this thread is already in the "How To" section, but maybe it gets lost if there aren't posts. Since the directors don't want to sticky it, maybe one of us just needs to go in and bump it once in a while.

I was able to create an album in Community/My Albums, upload a photo, then (after clicking on the photo to view it) copying the Picture URL in the lower right corner and pasting that into a post using the Insert Link button. That will at least allow folks to click on the link and see the photo. I tried the Insert Image button using both the Picture Url and the BB Code (which is an IMG file) but it didn't work. I can see the photo on the page myself, but only when I'm signed in ... probably because it's a "My Album" rather than a gallery community album.

After discussing the matter we have decided that images will need to be uploaded using a URL. We have disabled the thumbnail/upload from computer option. Even though the image visually was a thumbnail, it was a representation, and the actual file size and loading speed was the same as the full size image. Members can either use a hosting service-Photobucket, Imageshak etc. or create a user album in our Gallery. Images hosted in our Gallery are far less likely to be blocked for members using work computers.

I have a question. I know I am new to posting here, and some forums do not let new posters include images. I was trying to post some info about how the Sarasota book signing went and include a photo in the post. After I clicked on "post," it said my message would appear after it was approved by a moderator. I tried to post it over 6 hours ago. I don't know if that is normal since regular text posts appear instantly. Any suggestions or answers to why this is happening would be appreciated. Thanks, Daniel

Bring your image from the gallery up from the site. Right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location"
Go to the thread you wish to post in and once your comments are in, click on the 'Insert Image" icon. A box will appear, Patse the URL of the image (I usually just ControlV), click OK and then the image is there.

Since I couldn't post in the Rare Illustration thread, here it goes: I've apologized to Jerome and believe it or not, I had him mixed up with someone else. And I didn't intend to be a "dick", I simply defended myself towards some who felt that they should insult my language and my mother. But this "He must be new, he's only looking for trouble" nonsense simply doesn't work. I've contributed a lot to this place, and have provided King pieces and references and what have you. I've had issues with passwords so I created a new profile. As I've been away for some months, I simply couldn't remember the password. I first registered here in 2008 and yes, I've had more than one profile before, also because I'm a fool of remembering passwords. And yes, I admit I could have responded differently to the admin's comment..and I might have messed up with my comment about the Illustration list. I wasn't expecting someone to do the work for me. I would gladly have provided one, if needed, but it was incomplete. That's why I felt it needed to be updated. Not because I expected someone else to do it. This little war began because I felt the admin's comment was unneccesary (but I could have been wrong), and because I was shocked he didn't even get the facts straight...that I wasn't exactly new to this site. But, hey, no one's perfect. I should have responded to him in a lighter way, I know that. Too late for that now. Sorry for posting here, but felt I wanted to be more clear on all this. I can live with being regarded as a "troll" but I know that isn't the case, and based on some of the responses I've received from some people here, I'm not the only "troll." I really mixed Jerome up with someone else, and I saw red. But it's good that you support your admin because he IS a good admin, and yes, undoubtedly a nice guy. He didn't deserve my harsh words on him and I didn't deserve having random people thrashing my language and my mother. I felt backstabbed. It especially hurt when it comes from people I've corresponded with in the past (John Hanic - and John, sorry for my personal rage, but I was hurt). So, really, no more new profiles from me, that's a promise. It was all just a very bad...I don't know what it was. Take care, it really has been great and I wish you all the best. Best, Peter.

I broke my own promise, sorry about that. Hm, Jerome, I hope I didn't write to the wrong Jerome with my rather long apologies, but then again, I'm sure it is you since I can see we share some of the same friends who are also here. It's probably in the Other section of your e-mails. But I hope you can ignore the first e-mail which was...hm...pretty angry. The apology is definitely sincere. We've never had any problems before, so it's a darn shame it happened. As I wrote in my previous ramblings, I should have been more clear about my intentions with that Illustrators list and perhaps have suggested that I found a way to contribute with my personal list of illustrators - either by providing the entire list here in a thread or write the names in each Short Fiction section. If you want, as perhaps as I kind of token, I can still do that, but it's up to you. More importantly, I really should have thought twice about my first response/reaction here to you. That undoubtedly made me appear as a kind of person of which I'm not. And herbertwest and JohnHanic, it's very kind of you, but I don't think I would feel so comfortable being a full member here after all this, but I'll still check it out from time to time...it's too addictve not to.

If the size of the pics (pixels, and or file size) are too large, they won't load.

Does the link end with a valid image file type? (jpg, jpeg, gif, png, etc) quite often these shares are relative links and don't allow the browser to identify the file type that needs to be displayed.

Go to: Gallery, my photos

Click on the photo you want to delete.

Over at the far upper right click on "photo options", "edit photo".

There will be a place there to check "delete photo"

stroppygoblin made some very nice changes to our gallery photo upload options:

I've just been investigating the photo upload admin options and have tweaked a couple of settings:

1. I have modified it so that instead of showing the url link under the uploaded photo, it now shows a proper BBcode link that can be copied and pasted directly into a post.
2. I have modified it so that a user can select up to 5 images concurrently and upload all at the same time. (I can increase this, but I felt 5 was a reasonable number)

I could use some help/advice, please :)

I'm trying to use the upload tool here so that I don't have to use an outside hosting site, and while I've tried to upload some photos, they're not appearing. I may be doing something wrong

I've tried using the "upload photos" link, and I've also tried creating an album and uploading them to the album. Each time it gives me the "photo uploading" dialogue, followed by"upload complete", but I still can't find them anywhere and when I navigate back to my album, it's blank.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need some permissions that I don't have?

Thanks!

The most likely culprit would be the size of the photos you are trying to add to your album. I use a free internet based program (https://bulkresizephotos.com/) to resize all my photos before uploading. Works like a charm.

As you can see from my above post, I have had this issue as well.

Would it be too much of a problem to change "no maximum upload size" to whatever the true maximum upload size is (I still don't know but it seems to be ~1MB)? Or maybe "no total maximum upload size; individual pictures limited to X"? I think it's rather misleading and causes unnecessary confusion.

That said, I want to say that I very much appreciate the gallery option and it's the only way I've ever posted pictures to the site. I don't have to go to some third-party site and make an account, and I don't have to worry about exceeding some threshold if the pictures I upload are viewed too many times. So thank you, sincerely, to everyone involved for including that functionality in the site.

The text cant be changed (at least not by me). The maximum image resolution is set to 4000 x 3250 and the max image size is pretty much unlimited. There must be something else that I cant get access to that is preventing images above a certain size to be uploaded.

Thanks for clearing that up! It looks like it's on me - the native image resolution is too large by the tiniest bit for pictures from an iphone 6S (FYI in case anyone else is using their iphone as a camera) - they are 4032 x 3024. When I compress the image usually lands at 1MB so that's what I thought was going on.

Thanks again, and I really appreciate the service!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

So, I tried uploading a new "Test" image of my bookcases and thought I had it destined to my 2010 Collection album and it seemed to upload without an issue, but I'll be damed if I can find it. Also, it seems like I have pics in several places and would like to consolidate and organize them into either of two albums, "Rock n Roll Art" and "2021 Collection". When you exceed the limitations, the upload seems fine, but then there is "nothing there".

According to folks that are more "Tech" oriented the absolute best place for hosting your photo's is right here in the "Member Gallery". If you look around there are a couple "How to" threads like this one and several members of the Staff who are always willing to help (namely, Randall Flagg, George at C-Springs, Mae, etc) you figure out how to do it.

However, I like you, am not very "Tech" oriented and while I tried using the gallery here, I still found it easier to post utilizing a 3rd party hosting site like, Photobucket or Bubolup. One main thing to be concerned with is the overall image size. The site has reasonable size requirements for any image so, you're gonna want to "re-size" your images to about 20-30% of the original (its not as bad as it sounds). You can do this by simply right clicking on the image prior to uploading and scaling it back to 20-30% (30% always works for me), saving it as a different file and then copying the image address into the box created when you click on the icon that looks like a picture frame when you're posting.

Best of luck to you it's really not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

How to: Add links, pics & videos (https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?22589-How-to-Add-links-pics-amp-videos)

This thread is current and accurate. We will be adding detailed instructions on how to create and upload to your own gallery here on the site. There are size (pixels and file) limits, but they are reasonable and not terribly challenging unless you try to upload 4MB or 4000x2500 images.

Do I need to request to have a folder created on the gallery for my pics?

Also, can I transfer them easily into there from my iPhone, where I will have the pics stored or do I need to use a computer?

Sorry, I’m technologically challenged and can use all the help I can get!!

I have a few more new purchases in the way and then I’d like to update my collection page with more and better pics.

The site will automatically create a gallery file under your username when you upload photos. As long as you are able to navigate to the picture you wish to upload, you shouldn't have any problems with your phone.

There are two ways to post photos. Either upload the photo to a web site that hosts photos and link to the photo with the http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/editor/insertimage.png icon, or you can upload to the site server in the Gallery.

To upload to the site server: Click Gallery. From the upper right of the menu on top of the new page click Upload Photos. Click the Browse button. Navigate to the photo on your device and select it. Repeat for each photo. Click Open. Wait for the photo[s] to upload. When it's complete you will be taken back to your gallery.

You have three picture posting options. You can post the thumbnail, the medium sized image below the thumbnail, or you can click on the medium sized image and another window will open with a full sized image. Right click the image you want. Select Copy Image Location, then click the http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/editor/insertimage.png button in the thread you want and paste the image location in the box. Click OK.

I loaded a photo into the embers gallery, but I don’t see an option to Copy Image Selection. I can’t right click on anything using my phone (that I am aware of). I somehow copied the image into my collection thread but it is barely big enough to see.
I uploaded photos once before using photobucket so maybe I should just try to figure out that process instead.

It sounds like you copied the "thumbprint" version of the picture. I don't use my phone to post pics, so I might not be much help. I do know that others use the Tapatalk app. That could be a solution. Perhaps stroppy will comment.
