View Full Version : Book Four discussion

Alright, I figured it may be wise to begin discussion on the next book in the series. I noticed that we've been sticking to classics, and thought it would be an interesting idea, for us to stick to a common theme for a time. We could stick to classics, or try going more mainstream. Or pick a certain genre! discuss, and keep this in mind and post your nominees for book #4

As always, the previous books are still up for review and voting. If you wish to change your old nomination, please post it here:

I'm all for anything Kerouac.

I would like to change my nomination, as I believe that "The Turn of the Screw" is too short for these purposes.

Instead, I would like to nominate "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

I'll gladly read any Keruoac for this.

Also, I'm still all for Val's nomination of Sirens of Titan.

I have a suggestion that is basically my boyfriend's suggestion. He had me read 1984 and then Brave New World. I think it would spawn some really interesting discussion. I don't think they have to be read in that order, either.

So I guess my nomination is Brave New World. :)

With our good bear's approval, the poll will be going up for book #4 on July 1st. We will have 2 weeks of voting for the next book. So get your nominations in!
Also, due to the number of nominations, we have, we need books to be seconded or thirded (are those even words?), as we only have 10 slots per poll.

candy
06-16-2009, 11:13 AM
i shall have a think and then get a nomination posted, or a current nomination seconded.
do i take it the above ones have been seconded and thirded?

When do i have to get a nomination in, or will mine go to next months?

hooo so many questions sorry:onfire:

razz

I'm still trying to figure out how to do this while making it go smoothly, so what i did now, is take all the nominations from the book three discussion, as well as their seconds, thrids, etc., and post them here. for now, anything here must have been at least seconded to be in the poll. Those with three or more will be kept in automatically, due to previous interest.

shit, i need to talk to Jean about this.

ha ha piffle indeed!!! no problem razz, you are doing a grand job, just let me know what i need to do, or if you want to go with just the above for book 4 and then start a clean sheet:couple:

that may actually be a good idea: keep what books we have up now, then after book four start anew. Comments?

Really? I think that one would be a wonderful one to go with. If you don't go back with this one, I might nominate it myself next time.

razz
06-17-2009, 03:45 PM
Well if nobody opposes, Jean, would you kindly put the poll up tomorrow (and change the title)? We'll have the poll run until July 1st, which is pretty close to two weeks.
Hey, I wonder if we could get an announcement banner on the homepage?

Jean
06-17-2009, 10:38 PM
we have 11 nominations, two of which single, and ony 10 poll options...

BROWNINGS CHILDE

As we have already done one of the books that I nominated, you can delete Haunting of Hill House if you want.

Jean
06-18-2009, 12:45 AM
You know, for the sake of consistency, I'll leave out both our nominations this time, keeping only the seconded ones, if it's all right with razz.

Razz, as soon as you okay this decision (or reject it and come up with something better), I'll make the poll.

razz
06-18-2009, 07:06 AM
actually, I'd suggest Lamb and Dharma Bums be removed this time. While they both did great in nominations, neither of them got any votes during the last poll. I would like to seee if there is more interest in either your books :)

Heather19

Did you not like it?

Jean
07-01-2009, 08:34 PM
Only to an extent. Palahniuk in large doses bores me, he is way too monotonous. I was going to reread any of his novels (talking only about novels now, his short stories are nice) no sooner than a few years after the first read.

candy
07-03-2009, 11:32 AM
is that it now:panic: are we ready to read yet?

looks like it is survivor - which does not bode well, although i have not read this book i do tend to agree with jean on most things:huglove:

i shall wait for the official personage to tell me the results before i go ahead and order the book though

You know I use that place a lot just to peruse for fun, but I can never think of it when I'm looking for something particular. Must be some mental block.

Thanks for the reminder JohnBlaze. :couple: *wolfkiss*

We'll see, if I can find an audio copy of 1984 maybe I'll join in.

does it have to be an audio copy?

Well I'm in the middle of reading another book now, and I've got some others lined up so I won't be able to get to it anytime soon. If I can track down an audio version I should be able to get thru it pretty quickly. I've got a long commute to work, so I can usually get through them within a week or two depending on the length.

Well, I've chosen to read this book over summer for my AP English class.

I'd love to discuss with you guys, and I've heard a lot of good about this book. I think it will share a tone with my favorite book, Fahrenheit 451.

Well I got ahold of the audiobook, which just so happens to be narrated by Frank Muller, who I love. I was excited to start it, but honestly I'm really not enjoying it. I will try to finish it though. When does discussion on the book start?

razz
07-15-2009, 05:14 PM
Soon as someone who is willing to post questions about the book finishes the book or cares to run the thread.
If nobody does so, I'll start the thread when i finish and scrape up a few questions :)

So has this book club thing officially died? I tried to keep it going with discussion threads for "Something Wicked" and "1984". I really liked the idea of a book club. Is noone still interested?
