Good for you! I am working on a job at the moment, too.
It's just a stage hand job at my college's theatre. But they get some pretty high-profile shows, so it should be good :)

So...is accounting what you eventually want to do? Or is the experience for something else entirely?

It's what I want to do in the long term, really. I've been studying at college in the evenings for over the past year now, and when I got my first qualification and realised I had actually passed the first year of the course, I thought to myself, "Fuck me! I can work hard at something I enjoy!" My mum used to be an accountant, and she said it was stressful, but she also earned loads of money, so it's definitely something I want to get any kind of low level experience in soon, really.

So what duties does being a stage hand involve, anyway? If you get some pretty big shows at the theatre, that'll definitely look good on a CV, at least!

Cool! Well best of luck, my friend! Gotta feed your Doctor Who obsession somehow, I suppose...:P Those DVDs are DAMN expensive!

Stage hand duties include (according to my application): unloading and setting up stage equipment, managing traffic at stage entry points, moving set parts during shows, and general backstage tech work. I have a bit of experience, so it shouldn't be too hard.
The only problem is that I am going into an Animal Science field so it does jack squat for my resume...but at least I'm having fun, right?

Cheers! And the dvds maybe expensive, but can you think of any other show's dvd extras that are nearly as awesome as the ones on Doctor Who dvds? Series Three was worth every penny for having the ultimate Easter Egg, specifically, of course:

The Blink easter egg. The one the Doctor put on dvds in the episode to talk to Sally Sparrow. They included that easter egg as an actual easter egg on the series 3 set. Worth the price alone!

Series 5 has specially filmed scenes on the set, too! As written by Moffat! Must buy!!!

Well yeah, as long as you have a good time in your job, that's what counts. And it's gotta be more fun working at a busy theatre than working at McDonald's or a shop, i bet!

Okay, I'll admit. That is pretty damn awesome. But I find it hard to spend $50
on my Supernatural DVDs...of which I own all 5 seasons :D

And those have pretty epic special features, too. The blooper reels alone...:P But you wouldn't get them unless you watched the show.

Maybe once I get my job underway and finally get my hands on all the Scott Pilgrim books I can splurge on a few...maybe.

Spent a couple of days corpsing a "Bucky" skeleton. My first effort but I like how he turned out! Took pics between the major steps.

First step pantyhose, second step liquid latex, third step shellac and fourth step wood stain

Still have to add some hair.

Seriously, that's awesome. I bow to your greatness.

We decided this year to pass the torch to a friend to host the annual Halloween party. I'm a bit sad, we were going for the 17th annual. We just can't do it anymore, though, since DBF is in a condo now.

Damn. :(

I just got my jumpsuit back from this lady at work that was sewing my name on for me. It looks awesome. Now all I need to do is sew the Dharma patch on the left hand side and we're good to go t ! This is going to be so bad ass ! :excited:

 Thanks. For the skirt I'm debating between getting a longer, gray, more "authentic" skirt and a shorter (not mini) black skirt. While I don't want to be a ho, I want to look a little sexy, so I'm kind of leaning for shorter... also, the one I'm looking at is a "scooter" which means there are shorts underneath. (Who makes up these words?)

I think you mean "sew." :P Pics when you get it!

I'm debating: robe or no robe? It would just hang open over the costume so I look less schoolgirl and more witch, and I would probably only wear it until I got ridiculously hot from wearing 4 layers. But I have a hat so I feel like I should go all out.

(Also, if you look in the corner of that picture, my HP books are there. Totally unintentional. :P)

ka-mai, you look awesome!!!

I found my Halloween costume! I'm switching it up this year. Instead of being a pumpkin, I'm going to be a representative of Ghost League International. And by that I mean I'm wearing a t-shirt with a ghost on it. And probably jeans. And I probably won't even put my contacts in.

Visually, the Hydra symbol has always been my favorite, it looks bad ass.

While I'm going to be a standard DHARMA grunt, my brother is going to be Mikhail. He has the grey suit, the eyepatch, the Flame Patch, and he's waiting for his suit to come back with the embroidery. This is going to be epic :D

And yes, there will be pics !

Ricky, my BFF went as a cloud one year. Your Smoke Monster costume is VERY doable with some pillow stuffing, garbage bags, coat hangers, paint, cardboard, glue, and assorted specifics. It'd be easy enough to download or rip the SM sounds to an MP3 player (or whatever), and with speakers small enough to attach to costumes these days... Ideally, however, you'd start sooner than October 5th.

So last weekend was Halloween weekend at a campground we like to go to. The kids get to dress up and go around and get extra candy from all the campers.

I was sitting outside near the campfire in my usual costume handing out candy. Most of the kids didn't mind it. 1 or 2 had gave me a few odd looks and didn't want to get too close.

One little girl probably 5 years old or so came up and after I gave her the candy her parents said "What do you say?"

She said "Thank you monster." :wtf:

It's called smiling. You look fine. ;)

Actually, there is a facial similarity with you and the actress who plays Hermione.

I've done nothing except watch telly. There was a special Halloween edition of Psychoville on earlier. It was good although it wasn't as scary as I'd hoped. I also watched a New Zealand comedy horror film Black Sheep, which was ridiculous and entertaining.

Thanks guys! A lot of people say I look like her, and when I took that test that tells you which celebrities you have similar facial structure to, I matched her by 88% or something ridiculous. Plus the fact that Matt looks just like Harry we just had to do it. It was a lot of fun, he's all embarrassed about it though. He knows nothing about Harry Potter and people came up to him all night to discuss their favorite movie or book, and he was just like "...yeah... I like that one too..." He'll have to do something anti-nerdy next year to recover his pride. :P

Mystima: I bought my tie on Amazon, and Matt's in a store. They're specifically Harry Potter ties, anything that has the logo on the label should be a close match. They're nice looking enough that they're not cheesy, I'm sure someone at some point has worn theirs to work. :P

Halloween is the one time of the year when it's okay to scare the crap out of the wee ones. I've been working off and on in my back yard, in the dreadful Texas heat, for the past two or more months. My yard and house look like Satan's little workshop.

I wish I had the time, money and motivation to decorate more. We have some things but it seems like every year I walk into a halloween store and find tons of cool stuff that I want but can't really afford.

Halloween falls on a weekday this year which really sucks for me since I won't be home until after 7 o'clock. It'll be nearly over by then. Luckily there is a campground we go to all he time that celebrates Halloween during the first weekend in October. We decorate our campsite and the kids go trick-or-treating all around the campground. Then they have haunted hayrides at night.

They give out prizes for best costume (adult and kid) and best decorated campsite.

I came in here so I could shake me head and cluck my tongue over the antics.

The last time I dressed up for Halloween, I outdid myself to the point I have no interest in ever doing it again. My former boss is one of the most powerful people in the state. She hold a Cabinet level position now but prior to that, she was the man behind the curtain as far as policy and law were concerned. I mean, you say her name and people quake...awe, respect, fear, all of it. A few years ago, we had people from the state office in our office on Halloween. At the time, we were allowed to dress up for the day. Being Bethany, I dressed up as my boss, complete with her astronaut's wife hair, eye glasses on the tip of my nose and all of her very identifiable mannerisms. I went around all day introducing myself as her. The state office people were mortified, my coworkers thought I was going to get fired and my boss laughed at me.

Me and the Heff. :P

So this was my costume 2 years ago... I was thinking about getting a better wig and mask and keeping the dress? Also maybe a petticoat to make the skirt fluff out. My other idea (which is probably cheaper) would be to take a green dress and glue playing cards and poker chips to it to be a poker table. I kind of stole this idea off a costume site, that had a green dress with pool balls printed on it, but I think mine would be cooler because it would be 3D and not a cheap manufactured whore's dress. I can't decide though... I kind of like to go all-out on Halloween, so the poker idea seems pretty simple, but I also love making things and I'm broke. Plus I want to wear a mask, and that might look dumb with the poker dress.

Decisions, decisions.... :P

Once you become an adult most people think you're weird if you dress up and play pretend. Halloween is the one time of the year we are actually allowed to do it. It's fun to act like a kid every so often. Being an "adult" all the time is pretty boring.

I'm actually more into the decorating and trying to scare the kids than the dressing up part. I remember going through some pretty awesome haunted houses when I was out trick-or-treating as a kid. Now it's my turn to be on the other side.

depends on the area and time of day and week. Last year we had kids coming at around 4:30p.m. that sunday....had to actually go buy candy because we usually didn't get them at all since we moved in here 3 years ago. I think it might be due to people not having the money last year for parties and stuff also last year. Just my two pennies...

HAHAHA. Yes. I am doing this.

Last year I didn't dress up as anything, and at one party where every girl was mostly naked, someone asked me what I was and I said, "The only girl here with greater ambitions than prostitution." Another time when someone asked I said, "The only girl here without daddy issues." Which is mean, especially considering that I generally enjoy seeing risque Halloween costumes on girls in a completely genuine way, but it got a few laughs. SO YEAH I basically am the Ebenezer Scrooge of Halloween. And most likely always will be?

 I like your responses. That is one of the few things I hate about Halloween, all the girls showing way too much skin and then getting drunk and flipping up their tiny skirts to reveal their (usually costume-matching) panties. It just reeks of desperation and low self-esteem, and kills my mood. Plus the expectation that all women want slutty costumes makes shopping near impossible.

We're going to have a Halloween party after all. Halp. My head is empty of ideas. :panic:

Halloween is probably my sister's favorite holiday. I usually don't do anything special, although I do enjoy the East Village Halloween Parade.

I don't have a costume this year, so if I do go out it'll probably be as Quentin Tarantino. A less bald, less fat and old Tarantino.

My boyfriend and I are going to attempt a Halloween party. I say attempt because everyone we know lives far away or we don't like them so it may just be the two of us drinking the entire bowl of witch's brew and watching Psycho (he's never seen it!). Either way, I'm kind of excited. :P

Also, his roommates got 2 cats a few days ago, and one's black. I got way more excited about this than I should have. :D

Thanks Jon & Brice!!!

Depends. I started working on the fence and coffin and obelisk back in June. We put the fence up on the last week of September. About a week later we put the tombstones out. Within a week of that we started hanging some of the cucuys in the trees, spider webs and giant spiders and body parts in the webs. We waited until halloween day and spent about six hours putting the good stuff out. But we worked for a couple of months before that assembling most of it.

A lot of the props were old HALLOWEEN masks and costumes.

But usually while we're handing out candy HALLOWEEN night, we're sitting there thinking and discussing what to do next year to make it better!

Brice

Well, years ago i used to work in a somewhat unofficial capacity (meaning i just hung out with friends, played in the hidden corridors, helped set up displays, did a bit of makeup, light animatronics and prosthetics, etc.) at a year round haunted house. The point of mentioning all this is your display looks at least as good as most of the ones I've seen.

I am going as The Casual Luchador.
I figure since wrestling promotions always say that luchadors never take off their masks, that must mean they walk around in normal clothes with a mask on, or go to a job interview when their career isn't so hot with a mask on.

We have a permanent site at a campground and next weekend is Halloween weekend. Everyone decorates their trailers and the kids get to dress up and go trick-or-treating during the day. Then when it gets dark they have a haunted hayride around the campground.

I'll be one of the people trying to scare everyone on the hayride. They actually changed the route of the hayride this year to take advantage of a large island in the campground that is normally reserved for "primitive" camping. Which means no electricity so it's basically pitch black.

That sounds very cool and brings back great memories. My parents used to lease a campsite in upstate NY each summer for a while and what developed was a really cool community of parents and kids who did a boatload of activities together. Some of the highlights of my "Yute"!! LOL

You could try other Doctors? For a few years, I always went as the 8th (not a recommendation, hardly anyone knows who that incarnation is), but last year I went as 11. That's a pretty simple one, I think. Tweed jacket, bow tie, and braces. Alternatively, you could try something even simpler than that: the 9th Doctor, with the leather jacket. Those are my suggestions, anyway. Obviously, for the 11th, you'll have to make sure he rushes through the series quickly enough for him to eventually like 11, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind!

I want to do a Jake Lonergan for halloween. I have everything except the hat and the chaps, because the cheapest hat I've been able to find that is close enough to the original is 60 bucks, and the budget is tight. I'll keep looking... As to the chaps, I'm thinking of making some from an old pair of jeans. Cut them to shape, coat them in rubberized spray paint, and then spray paint them dark dirty brown. Does this sound feasible?

My friends were married on Halloween and are renewing their vows for their 25th anniversary. And I am the bridesmaid. No matter how much my so-called friend tried. <_< (To be fair, he did put a lot of effort into doing that.)) Usually went as the 8th incarnation, my personal favourite, but of course, no one recognised me in my poncy gear. Last year, showed a bit more imagination - went as the 11th! This year, very, very strongly considering going as the 8th again, only this time, in his more recent badass gear: blue leather jacket and jeans. It's a little bit difficult to find the former, but if not, I've always got my original 8th costume as a backup plan! :D

My wife's friend has an annual costume party and last year I went straight and actually felt like I was missing out on some fun...Don't hate me J, but it annoys the shit out of me when people show up straight to a freakin' costume party :)

I was at a party a few years ago and the flyers that were being passed around said "COSTUMES ARE A MUST! You will be charged $10 at the door if you are not wearing a costume. Tell your friends". During the night some homies show up without costumes and when the bouncer said that they needed to pay the cover, they started making a big scene. "OMG $10 !?!? THIS ISN'T SOME BAD ASS HOLLYWOOD CLUB OR SOME SHIT" and the whole time I'm thinking "yeah, let's show up to a fucking costume party with no costumes and then fucking complain, that makes a lot of sense".
