Good for Rick, good for Ned Dameron, and best of all, GREAT for the winner.

tippy4
07-01-2010, 06:51 PM
Wow! $738 and that was without a bid from David! This is not a record, but definitely in the top five I would guess.

I was actually contacted after the auction ended with an offer of $800 to sell it to an interested party. I let them know I could not do it, as the winner won fair and square.

I don't recognize the buyer. I will invite him to check out the discussion boards here (if he is not already a member).

Thank you to the members here who did bid!

All,

Ned Dameron suffered a minor stroke over the weekend.

I just got off the phone with him, and he sounded good given the situation.

He is with his wife and brothers.

In the next few days, he will have surgery to unblock the blood vessels leading to his brain.

Please keep Ned and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I will keep you posted as I get information.

Spoke to Ned today, and he is doing ok. They have him on medication, and they are going to keep an eye on him. Looks like surgery to remove the blockage is not going to occur after all.

Ned thanks you all for your thoughts and prayers on his behalf.

He is eager to keep working, and asked me to mail him the final three copies of The Waste Lands today (I had them sitting in a corner of my house for the last two months). I ran over to the post office and they are on their way to him now.

Stay tuned.....

I like Ned's interpretation of Roland.

Everyone here looks rather wholesome in a 1950's clean-cut sort of way.

The background seems like a whole lot of pink, but now I get that it is supposed to be rose.

I like this remarque, but I'm still trying to decide how much I like it.

Dameron still has Chuck Conners in his mind. It's too bad he didn't re-invent the image.

I feel that he has to stay true to his original illustrations. I would just seem wrong if he just re-invented the characters.

That being said, for this one, I feel he kind of de-Connerized Roland a tad. Not a re-invention....but a variation.

This one's def. not my favorite...I'm just not a fan of the (to me) corny "floating head montage." However, I appreciate how Ned is doing different things with the remarques, so each one has it's own personality...it's not like he's copying the same approach each time, but he's bringing something new to each one.

Tippy, I was the underbidder on #19. I think I've been the underbidder on the last couple actually; unfortunately can't afford to place a "get it at all costs" bid. The ones I have been placing are pretty up there as it is (I went $775 for this last one), but there's always someone out there with deeper pockets. Very depressing actually. Looks like, besides the last two, my only chance to pick one up will be maybe in a trade sometime or if somebody gets bored and sells. Not holding my breath. My favorites have been the Gunslinger statue in Lud, Shardik crashing through the woods, The Tower, chasing the sphere, and I actually really liked this last rose-tinted portrait one.

Anyone out their willing to trade? Sell? Never hurts to ask!

Took me a second to figure out what it was, then realized it was when Blaine made the floor clear and they could see what was living in the Waste Lands. I like the way everybody looks freaked out except for Roland, who's like, "Yea, whatever". I do see what appears to be a glaring mistake, though ... Roland isn't missing the fingers on his right hand. Looks to me like I'm seeing the index, middle finger, and base of the thumb. Also, why the heck is Jake wearing a tie? Just looked back at the previous remarques, I see he's wearing one in those too ... don;t remember that from the stories. Or is it supposed to be a bandana perhaps?

Randall Flagg
12-25-2010, 05:17 PM
When Jake is brought through, he is in his school uniform, which included a tie. I don't recall when he sheds the tie, although in the Dameron art where Gasher has Jake, and where Jake is reaching out to Oy, he no longer has a tie on.
It does appear as though Roland's right hand index finger is present.

George at C-Springs
12-26-2010, 03:16 AM
Of course it is all artistic measure on Dameron's part, whatever he wishes to portray, but he's been very accurate regarding the fingers in all the other remarques. What I meant about the tie was why would Jake still be wearing it at this point in the series (or at some of the previous points, for that matter). What's the first thing you do when you get home? Take off the tie. Would be a no-brainer in Jake's situation. I really have no idea where in the series Jake actually took off his tie. Regarding the fingers, try crossing your arms as Roland is doing and fold under your trigger and middle finger (as if you didn't have them) and thumb. What you would see is a large space (or two knuckles) between the ring finger and where the thumb knuckle is; to me that definitely doesn't appear to be what's shown in this one. I saw it right away and thought it very odd, as in all the other remarques he is shown missing the correct digits. In my head for a Blaine remarque I saw Blaine blasting through a long valley on the rail in the Waste Lands at supersonic speeds, with a shock wave coming off him and incorporating the one paragraph that described a deer having it's skin blown off by the blast as he passed. Maybe I'll draw that myself! Of course, none of this means I don't like the remarque!

That was one of the first things I checked for, but I really do feel that Ned removed the thumb and first finger in this drawing, and that what you are seeing is the third, and fourth fingers (with the fifth finger tucked under his arm). I did exactly as you suggested with my arms, and the part of my hand where the thumb and first finger would be kind of gets buried in my armpit.

I have the prelininary sketch on this one, and in it, Roland is in a different pose. You can clearly see that he only has three fingers in that.

What I meant about the tie was why would Jake still be wearing it at this point in the series (or at some of the previous points, for that matter). What's the first thing you do when you get home? I am going to have to agree with you there...that tie would have been history if I were Jake. But then again, Jake came from The Piper School, where good little boys and girls are taught to be respectful, so it is not out of the realm of possibility that he would retain it.

In my head for a Blaine remarque I saw Blaine blasting through a long valley on the rail in the Waste Lands at supersonic speeds, with a shock wave coming off him and incorporating the one paragraph that described a deer having it's skin blown off by the blast as he passed.

That happend in Wizard & Glass.

Randall Flagg
12-27-2010, 12:30 PM
I agree that Jake shouldn't have the tie. He wasn't wearing it when Gasher grabbed him, and I can't imagine why he would put it back on. That being said, if one frets about it they perhaps should not bid on it. I'm sure it well sell for a fair amount.
The Gunslinger could be just as Tippy suggested.

I don't know whether it is accurate from a continuity standpoint, but I kind of like that Jake still has his tie on in these. While I would have taken off the tie, that is my adult perspective. My experience with my sons is that once they have something like that on, they forget about it completely.

Funny the amount of conjecture and discussion that can be generated by a couple of fictional missing digits and a tie : ) Tippy, the really important question is, when's it going up for auction? I'd like to get my underbidder bid in early! (ha ha)

You know, the more I look at this remarque the more I like it. When I was reading the story, in my mind's eye I was viewing the scene from 'above' Blaine to his right hand side with the train travelling left to right... I can still see it quite clearly in my head :) So effectively my mind was 'erasing' the rest of Blaine too so that I could see all the way through him. Or maybe in the story he does in fact become totally transparent? It's been a while.
When I first heard the remarque would involve Blaine's interior, I automatically assumed it would be the scene where the tet enters the train to find the gunslinger ice-statue... but far from it!
I really like the unusual perspective of this one... unusual in that it's quite different from the way I pictured it myself. And it's a very specific scene, unlike the 'floating heads' one from a while back. I also like Mr. Dameron's consistency in what the tet are wearing, even down to Jake's tie (whether or not it should be there). And best of all, the entire Ka-tet are included in the scene... one of the few.
If I wasn't so totally skint at the moment, I'd be very tempted by this remarque... great work (again) from Ned!

If anyone is interested, with this book, I will include the copy of the preliminary sketch Ned sent me of this remarque.

Ned's original concept had Roland looking a bit more surprised than in the final version.

When I saw it, I told Ned that Roland would be playing it a bit cooler, and he took my advice.

I think this has been covered before, but have any of these been resold on the open market after the first sale?

I know Betts has bought a couple after the fact, but has there ever been a private buyer-to-buyer sale? I wonder what the longterm market will be like? I think good, but hard to say when there's nothing to compare it too.

George at C-Springs
01-06-2011, 03:05 PM
I only know of one sold, back on November 3rd, but I think that was to David. Very good question about long-term market. I personally didn't get it as an investment, I got it because I love the books, the remarque subject, and Ned Dameron's art and his take on the storyline. I have some other remarques which I know probably won't gain any value; Glenn Chadboune's "haunting vision of Blockade Billy" (per Cemetary Dance) which turned out to be a baseball, for instance. Perhaps it's a really scary baseball, but I don't think too much of it and can't see it gaining any value at all. Anyway, I think with the Waste Lands remarques being a unique limited series, done very well, in a tremendously popular Stephen King book certainly can't hurt the value, and I would suspect it will retain, if not gain, over time. Figure the starting bid on all of these was (I believe) $500.00, so you probably wouldn't expect to drop below that. You can pick up other pieces of Dameron's art on eBay for far less (like this one for example: http://cgi.ebay.com/NED-DAMERON-original-full-color-fantasy-art-/370310522774?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item56383a2796 ), so you know this is likely related more to the author and the story than the artist himself. If you check other artists websites where original pieces are sold, you'll never see a Stephen King-related one available for very long, they get snatched up pretty quickly.

Value depends, of course, on what we're willing to pay. If nobody thought these were worth $500, they wouldn't have sold at all and I imagine Tippy would have re-auctioned with a lower starting bid. He didn't have to do that because these are all pretty fantastic and everybody realized that from the beginning (wish I'd been on board back then!). As long as collectors who are interested are still around and in the mood to add to their collections, they'll (we'll) pay what they consider a fair price (not $200K+ plus for IT , of course ... ha ha) to acquire a nice item. If it gains value I think that's just a bonus, and perhaps my kids will appreciate it some years down the road. Right now they just appreciate cool new Hot Wheels and Bionicles.

As David said above, this one went beyond what he was willing to pay, but of course he already has a half dozen of them! Me, I knew I'd have to go a bit higher than I have been going or risk being the underbidder yet once again, and with there only being two left my chances were diminishing rapidly. I actually got it a bit cheaper than I figured I would, as it's a pretty elaborate and colorful piece of work. I couldn't be happier! Likely if I (or anybody else who has one) were to sell at some point, there would be quite a few collectors just like me thinking they missed out the first time around, and by golly this is their chance. I don't think there's any danger of these not selling in the future, and I'd be really surprised if they didn't gain a little value at some point. But, even if they don't, I'm very happy to have one in my collection!

One book has been resold in a private, non-ebay auction.

As far as I know, none have been resold via ebay.

Not exactly sure what you mean by Betts having bought a couple after the fact, but every book i sold was sold on ebay.

As far as long term value, there is no way to say.

But, because there are so few of these, and because there are quite a few Dark Tower fans, I believe the value will hold.

I know most of the folks who bought these, and i don't believe that long term value was a major factor in their decision to purchase them.

Sam

Rahfa,
Since I'm the one who sold my remarque in November, I figured I'd speak up. My remarqued edition was not sold to Betts Books, it was sold as a private person-to-person sale. It hasn't shown up on the Betts website either, and I wouldn't expect it to unless something happened that made David have to begin parting with some of his collection. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know my transaction was between two individuals, not one person and a business.

Edit: I also want to add that this is the sort of piece that I wouldn't try to re-sell on ebay. Also, I wouldn't sell any of these for a penny less than what you pay for them simply because they are unique and completely different from one another, unlike many of the remarqued editions that have come out recently ala Blockade Billy and The Colorado Kid.

Rahfa
01-07-2011, 07:49 AM
Ah...for some reason I remembered Wiz saying he'd bought a couple after the fact. I must have confused that with ones he had won at auction himself.

I expect long term value to be fine...especially because they'll show up so rarely. On the other hand, because they'll show up so rarely there will be nothing for a buyer in a year or two to compare it too, and that can depress a sales price - which is why Sam is right, that an owner should hold the line at what they paid (if they ever sell, which I don't see happening for a loooong time).

So just one more to go? So sad....

It is nice but there is something about it that strikes me as odd. Haven't all the other drawings that Ned has done in this series illustrated some scene from this particular book? I'd have to look at all of them and possibly reread DT3 to be sure but this drawing seems out of place and maybe better suited for DT7. Is it just me or does anyone else feel this? Probably just me.

Be interesting to see what the two unsold go for, now that the entire project has earned its credibility.

Funny, this last one was my least favorite...didn't care for the b/w, or like others have said, the generic scene of the Tower rather than something from the book...but, another side of me says that the run of 21 should have one Tower-centric scene, so it fits in that way. Mostly, I'm sad it's come to an end! Have Ned do a "Lettered" version of 21 more!

tippy4
02-04-2011, 09:32 PM
When we announced the project, one of the guidelines I wanted to follow was that the images would be characters from The Waste Lands, in scenes from The Waste Lands. For the most part, we stuck to that guideline, but there were two deviations....the one with the characters faces with the rose-petal background, and the final one that sold today.

But, for #21 it just seemed right that the image be of Roland and The Tower.

As far as the two that went unsold the first time around (Shardik's Robots and The Flying Monsters), I am confident that they will both sell this time. Frankly, I was really surprised that Shardik's Robots did not sell, as this one definitely falls within my top 10 favorites. Hell, I might just have someone bid on that one for me!

I am going to send The Flying Monsters back to Ned, and he is going to "punch it up" a bit. Add some background, etc.

Funny...the "rose petal" one was the only other one I wasn't a personal fan of...it's like when he moved away from the storyline, it seemed a little contrived and pretentious. But, you're right that the Tower needed to figure in somewhere, and #21 is a good place.

I actually really liked the flying monsters last time...be interesting to see what it looks like a little punched up...maybe enough to get me off the sidelines...haha...

EDIT: This sounds harsher than I intended...really, what I meant was when he broke away from the storyline, it can seem contrived because the focus becomes the art, not the story...but the art itself is still top quality!

Well, I am THRILLED to be the owner of the last remarque in the project, especially as it has Roland and the Tower...Story line be damned! I ADORE Ned's original artwork (which Bob owns quite a bit of) and having a remarque with Ned's depiction of the Tower is what drew me to this particular one. I started my Ned collection with a Black and White of Roland receiving the cross from Aunt Talitha at River Crossing (attached pic) and end with Roland approaching the Tower. I also have remarques now of Roland, Jake, Oy, Eddie & Susannah.

Congrats, David!

I have always liked the Robots and was surprised it didn't sell the first go around.

Shardik's Robots is sold!

$717.66

Not a record, but a very respectable price, especially when you consider it went usold the first time around.

I need to get The Flying Monsters sent back to Ned so he can punch it up a bit.

In the mean time, he has a few pieces that he wants me to post for sale (some original paintings he did for Knowing Darkness).

I sorta wish 3-4 more had gone unsold just so we could see the improvements he would have made to them....but, really, there were just a couple that truly called out for a little enhancement like this anyway.

My first thought: Yesssssss, mine!

My second thought: Shit, now I gotta find some money ...

My third thought: I beat the second place person by TWENTY CENTS!? Amazing.

To the second placer, thanks for the fight, I assure you I don't have mind powers. I look forward to you kicking my ass in the future. :)

Thanks to all involved, this goes with my "I must own one of everything" mentality ... so Ned Dameron's Waste Lands Remarque ... check.

Ned and I have a few more small projects planed for the future.

You may not know this, but he is a very talented sculptor.

Over the last month, he has been working on a life-sized sculpture of Oy.

When I spoke to him last, he was in the process of painting it.

Stay tuned!

Thank you all. I wanted one in the set very badly. Next remarque on my hitlist is one of David's Gunslingers. I'm comin' for youuuuuuuu friendo! You don't really need 5+ copies, do you? Think of how happy it will make me! :)

lol

Question for all those still monitoring this thread. Does anyone do anything special with their remarques? I was thinking of scanning the images, printing them on high quality paper and putting them in some kind of binder. Although cool to show off, I think it would add wear and tear on the books to take them off the shelf/out of the slipcase, open the pages, blah blah blah ... Anyone, anything? :)

It's not really special what I do but I use a software program called collecterz.com for keeping track of my books. The software allows you to place pictures in the database so I put my remarque pictures there to show off. I'm a geek so digital is how I do it :)

I own the one with Tick Tock and Richard Fannin.

I bought a slipcase from The Collector to set it apart from the other books in my collection.

Interesting...

Did he always expect it to fail?

Reason I ask, is it didn't have to be Wastelands he tried that in...he could have chosen any book, right? Or was it the specific paper that he wanted to experiment with?

Robert Fulman

I matted and framed my signed/numbered "Jake and Oy" print (from the Waste Lands portfolio):
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/1153/zzahutcom002.jpg
In case anyone is wondering, I used a 12" by 16" inch frame matted to 9" by 12" (mat cost $3, and I think I found a really great color, too). The print is 10" by 12 3/4", and I'm too cheap to pay for custom framing, so I had to hide a bit behind the mat, but I think it looks really nice.

Interesting...

Did he always expect it to fail?

Reason I ask, is it didn't have to be Wastelands he tried that in...he could have chosen any book, right? Or was it the specific paper that he wanted to experiment with?

I would not say he expected to fail, but he wanted to be cautious.

And yes, he wanted to see how his paint would work on the specific paper.

I had that copy of The Waste Lands sitting on my shelf...I had bought it in shrinkwrap on ebay for the remarque project, but the post office messed it up...so we decided to use it as our guinea pig.

It is now up to $75...so bare minimum, I am going to get my purchase price on the book back.

Wow you guys, I really thought there would be more interest in this as a preliminary work, especially with the letter from Ned. I'm really surprised that the owner of #21 (I don't know who got it) didn't grab it at all costs. I'm also curious what turned everybody off to this one, was it the condition of the book or the fact that this attempt was a "failure" even though the final came out fantastic?

Well, color me happy; I feel like I stole it for $76 ... $700 cheaper than what I paid for #20! Rick, I sent you a message regarding shipping via eBay.

Good job George, I had my eye on it but was away from the computer yesterday. Don't know what you would have went up to, but I was thinking I would have went to maybe $100-$125, maybe a little bit more if we had a bidding war going and I felt competitive! :)))

But yeah, good job and price! :)

It shall be mine. But to stay on topic (because some people are getting slightly vaginated ... I mean irritated), lol, I liked the idea behind this. It's different. Just like the Dolan's Cadillac at Betts with shotgun damage from a domestic dispute, it's interesting. I would have bought that one too, but it wasa sold before I even laid eyes on it. Oh well ...

Received The Waste Lands #21 experimental book, it's a lot cooler in hand than it looked in the eBay photos. For example, although he mentioned paint I couldn't actually tell what was used; now I can see quite clearly that he used what looks to me to be silver model airplane paint (think of that P-51 Mustang that you made when you were a kid). I'm sure it isn't (kind of), but that's sure what it looks like. I photographed it outside in sunlight so you can really see the refelections off the silver in the double-page photo. The other two photos are to show details. I also really like the letter from Ned to Rick explaining his process. Overall, well worth the $76!
