The last one in equates to breath, it’s true
Before that there’s a couple of “Bobs”
Next toy horses and some ice cream too
A generation’s howl would be found in a poem, written for the youthful mobs
And now a dark man of religious doubt.
The next has marriage on his mind
A fallen chief of state; a tragic family of clout
Tack an iconic princess after a Jamaican beat for the second to the last in line.
Finally, or firstly, depending on where you begin, I’ll give you the straight honest dope
The first one in contains within a wildly popular pope.

I think the "last one in" clue is referring to the "equates to breath." All I can think of on that end is something to do with the "spire" foreign word--you know, respiration, inspiration, expiration, etc.

I'm not sure if that's right, though--a few more clues and we'll see.

Sounds like a better start than I had.

The last (first?) one isn't "John Paul JONES," is it? You said "John Paul" was only PART of it....

I am REALLY confused now....

I've been thinking about John Paul Jones, too, but I can't fit the rest of them in however hard I tried. It thoroughly prevents me from thinking of any other approach, though.
