Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to King, having been collecting for about a year or so. I recently acquired my first signed pieces. I got a great deal on a Finders Keepers flatsigned, and a Dolans Cadillac S/L. those are probably my prize pieces at the moment. I have recently fallen in love with Joyland, and am actively seeking variants and editions to fulfill my Joyland obsession.

Just joined the forum, and have been a fan of Stephen King since I read EOTD (followed by Thinner and Cujo) in middle school... I took about 15 years off, and then read Mr Mercedes which started a very slippery slope for me (Finders Keepers started me in the collecting game)-- currently halfway through DT IV.

Started collecting 1st/1st's a couple years ago- I've amassed a nice (IMO) collection with about 50 of them so far, highlighted by The Stand.

I was browsing this site, and I noticed dragonbound EOTD which looks awesome, so I may have to get started in Limited collecting! (is there any plans to make another "rebound" book like that)?

Welcome! Welcome to the King Universe. Have to know how someone got into Classical Economics books from 1780-1850?

Thank you for the warm greetings!

I am an accountant and consultant by trades and as such, when I first decided to collect books, rare economics books naturally appealed to me. There are thousands of books on economics, but the great schism/debate between Malthus and Ricardo peaked my interest the most, so I started my collection from around those two pantheons of classical economics!

After collecting those for some time, I decided to collect works that I enjoy the most (reading) and now, I am dedicating my fervor on all things Tolkien and GRRM (and perhaps, King since some of the books carry great works from both authors)!

For Hobb I’d have to choose beteren the original trilogy and Liveship trilogy. I’m a sucker for wolves so the Farseer trilogy wins.
With Erikson it would be Memories of Ice. Currently re-reading so that could shift...

What about yourself?

Sass
05-19-2019, 05:03 PM
ok it's super long so sorry about that !!

The very first Stephen King book I read, I read when I was 8. It was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

It was a fine book, nor a horror story, not really, but decent to my 8 year old mind. I told my dad I liked it and he was happy. He'd introduced me with that book to see if I liked Kings writing style and would be willing to read more from him. If I'd hated it and refused, my life may have been very different.

Following that, he was still warming me up to the idea of horror, he gave me The Eyes of the Dragon

Now, I read the first chapter of this book and the King of the story Start off in the first chapter but eating the heart of a dragon raw. I don't know why but at 8 years old that fucking terrified and disgusted me. It took me a full year to get through the book I was so terrified.

Ironically, this is Randall Flagg (actually even going by that name!)'s first appearance uhh... Chronologically. Because the Delain Line is before the Deschain Line. Kind of. Or it might be parallel. Seeing as Roland Deschain meets the two main characters in the Eyes of the Dragon in The Gunslinger speaking of Randall Flagg who Roland doesn't know is also The Man in Black. A lot of conclusions could be drawn.

All the same!

That book terrified me. I literally cried and had Nightmares over it literally Just because of the scene in the beginning.

I didn't read another Stephen King book until I was 13.
Enter Freshman year of high school. I was young for my grade, going in at 13 well into my invader Zim phase, my dad says he wants to give me something to read.

The Tommyknockers by Stephen King. It's a book about aliens, he says. You'll like it better than the other one, he says.

And while King is quoted as saying he hates that book and it's the worst he'd ever written...

I loved it. I lived for the book. I lived for the horror of it. And so I asked my dad if i could read another King Book.

And my dad agreed. But oh did I not realize the clauses and conditions to which I was jumping in.
He hands me Carrie, the first book King ever published. I finish it in two hours. I return it to my father and ask for another. He hands over 'Salems Lot, the second book King had ever written. It looked interesting but... I asked my father if there were any more alien books.

My dad considered me. And then said, "You'll have to wait and see."

To which I had questions, of course. Why did I have to wait? I wanted to read more alien books now! He only shook his head! And he told me from here on our I'd be reading all of Kings books in the order they had been published. No skipping.

I thought it was insane! None of these, save for the dark tower seriess which I didn't even know about yet, were series! It didn't matter what order I read them in! It's not like they took place in the same universe, right?
And thus I read. And I read. And I read. Always in order! Never skipping! And I'd smile when one book would reference another or call back some obscure fact of something else.

And them slowly, as I worked through the books, I began to realize something.

Wait, this story took place in Castle Rock and-- wait wasn't that the guy from Derry? And if Rose Madder is connected to Desperation and Desperation is connected to an obscure short story called Night Flyer which makes refrence to Carrie, which is in the town next to Cujo--

Then.

Then what?

Surely the question if thought all those years ago couldn't have merit. No, no, of course not.

But then...

Why was the villian in the Eyes of the Dragon carrying the same name as the villian in The Stand. I asked my father if they were the same person.

He only smiled and shrugged and said he didn't know.
And so I read more. And I read more. And more and more did I make connected, did I make relaizstions, and finally as I read through the beginning to the dark tower series I realized that it all

Came

To one

Point

A Nexus, one might say.

And I goddamn lost my mind. I ran to my dad and my sister who was also in the same tangle as I, though father along than me. And I demanded if they knew. If they *knew" it all stemmed from the damned TOWER!

And of course they did. But they both only smiled and said they didn't know.

And so I read.

And eventually I came to a book called Insomnia and.

I don't know how to describe what I felt when I had everything I had ever thought conformed in a single fucking sentence in that book. The elation I felt to see it all come together, to know things I'd though for YEARS was Fact. Pure, canon *fact."

And as I go deeper into the works of King I find myself quite akin to Roland myself. Chasing the Tower ripping up every connection I can and holding it to my chest and having to stop myself from screaming to high fucking heaven about the goddamn TOWER every time something comes up. And every time there's a book between the next in the series. It's like torture .

But I signed away a long, long time ago to this very course.
Anyway that's all!

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

Very first Stephen King book I read was a paperback copy of Night Shift my Dad gave me. Pretty much gobbled up everything after that. His is a vast universe.

Who is your favorite character?

Is it ingratiating to say Randall-Flagg-the-owner? I've always been partial to Cujo. Poor pup didn't deserve his fate.

What is your favorite book?

I suppose that old copy of Night Shift will always be my favorite. Now as far as fine press collectible books, that's a tough call. I treasure my Lettered copy of the SubPress edition of The Shining -- I was just getting acclimated to small presses and I somehow was lucky enough to place a regular order for it. That said, I really love what Paul Suntup's doing and (though it cost me a pretty penny aftermarket) I hopped on the Dragon Rebound train. It's really hard to pick a favorite among them. Maybe Firestarter?

How old are you?

Halfway to a century.

Where are you from?

Maryland, within shouting distance of the U.S. Capital. Was actually born in Washington, D.C. Growing up, local news and national news were pretty much the one-&-the-same. Spent some time in Philly but I'm back in Maryland living halfway between Baltimore and DC. And yes I cried when the CAPS won the Cup.

do you have a nickname?

Rich is fine. My old fraternity names are irrelevant at this point.

how did you find this site?

I was researching small press collecting and stumbled across TDT a couple-three years ago. Really enjoy the site and the banter, been a regular visitor ever since. Finally properly registered and emerging from lurker territory.

but my brother is a big King Fan and i got into his books because of him pretty much and his films. really King thinks Tommyknockers is his worst novel? no i don't think it is at all, i think it's one of his best but if i'm not mistaken it's the last one he wrote while he was still drinking and doing cocaine so my guess is that's why he thinks that. i haven't read Eyes of the dragon for some reason but it's funny that one would scare you yet that is the one he wrote for his than teenage daughter.

who i believe loved it. i've never heard anyone having nightmares from it so that was a first to read that. the one i had nightmares from though i read IT at 13 was the werewolf scene in IT and than there was the kid that got killed by the damn well by pennywise but i forget the scene, when i read it a couple years back again for like the 15th time or so and i'm 40 now. but welcome to you all to the site

ok it's super long so sorry about that !!

Gave me goose bumps. There are few things cooler than a young persons journey into reading and the world of King. Misery in 7th grade was my jump on point. Welcome and have fun on the rest of your mission.

haha yeah for sure I just write and write and write for some reason. I got a lil excited. but yeah I think thats probably why he thinks that but it's still one of my favorites, but I also am like, obsessed with aliens, so that might be why. IT scared me too, but it was the uhh Spider in the sink scene that got me and the blood everywhere was just like, immensely horrifying for some reason and then no one else could see the blood at first and I was like 0: but yes thank you so much for the welcome!

With redesigning the Green Mile I mean that I'm going to make a new experience out of the book: I'm going to make a new illustration for the cover, I will be thinking about book size, paper thickness, font, the type of binding, etc.

Hi guys,

So here they are! My 3 sketches for my school project about The Green Mile.
For now it is all about the message they tell and placement of elements, you don't have to think about colors and such (although you may give suggestions for it).

I would like you guys to comment the number and your reasoning for picking that one.
(So for example: "1, because it....").

If you have any other suggestions about any of the designs please let me know as well.
(Please do this the same way: "1, maybe try....").

Thank you all in advance, you're helping me out so much.

Once I've chosen one of the designs I will do another post where I will specify things such as paper thickness, book size, font, etc. And I would like you guys to give feedback on that as well.

So here are my three designs, each have a number in the top right corner:

1st of all Welcome Robin and 2ndly if he's right the 2nd one is the best one i think too. the other are good and damn i wish i could draw like you do but mine are just stick figures. anyways the 2nd one reminds me of the Beverly Clearly books i loved growing up books such as Runaway Ralph for example. and that series and i know that's not what the cover is for but that's what it made me think of so i think the 2nd one is one you should use, i hope you put some color into it too

First of all, I like the idea to have the whole dustjacket be a single picture. I'm not sure how familiar you are with collectible books or small press books, but that's a common design choice for limited edition books and one I really like.

So far, I think #1 is my favorite because it takes the most advantage of using the entire dustjacket and fills up most of the space. It's also a great image from the movie and I haven't seen as much done with this image as I have with the mouse and the electric chair. You could use a solid background and make the bugs lots of different colors - it might not be quite true to the book (I don't remember if their color was described, I know they were black in the movie adaptation) but would be very striking. Or you could do the opposite and make the bugs all black and have colorful background. Lots of options!

#2 is my second favorite - I think we all like the mouse and thimble, but it doesn't take good advantage of using one large picture for the whole dustjacket.

I think #3 is a clever idea, I just don't like the pictures as much. Having the back figure in shadow is cool but I think the front figure is lacking. Not sure if it needs to me more abstract or more detailed, though! Again you could go a number of different ways.

Best of luck and looking forward to seeing your final submission.

Howdy!

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I read the whole DT series back in 2007. I wanted to read more books that featured Flagg, so I did my research and that's how I found out.

Who is your favorite character?

Gotta be Roland! Otherwise, Thomas and Dennis.

What is your favorite book?

For the series, Wizard and Glass. Overall, The Eyes of the Dragon.

How old are you?

I'm a tricenarian, but most people think I'm a teenager. A kid at heart, basically.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in upstate NY.

Do you have a nickname?

"Doctor McCoy" or just "Lon".

How did you find this site?

A google search. I decided to join because I was hoping I could find other fans of Eyes of the Dragon. I recently re-read my copy and became inspired to do some art of the characters. I'm thinking of making a sequel in the form of a manga and/or visual novel because I'm sure I'm not the only one dying to know what became of Thomas and Dennis post-novel. If anyone wants to discuss ideas or designs, do hmu. I also have discord.

(Also hi, CaptKirky! It's nice to see a fellow Trekkie already!)

Howdy!

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I read the whole DT series back in 2007. I wanted to read more books that featured Flagg, so I did my research and that's how I found out.

Who is your favorite character?

Gotta be Roland! Otherwise, Thomas and Dennis.

Hi kingfan, its not much to some of the beautiful sets that I've seen on this forum but I mostly have subpress books,
19 of them, 5 lettered and the rest limited. My main goal for now is to finish a set of malazan that I've managed
to get 3-8 so far by mixing and matching numbers and also eventually to get the lettered set.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I've been a constant reader since I was much too young. I got the Bachman books (feat. RAGE) from my aunt when I was eleven or so. My dad also had a copy of the Gunslinger (the original version and the re release) but I didn't seriously read it until I was 19 (for real). I wouldn't have understood or appreciated the metaplot earlier anyway.

Who is your favorite character?
The Turtle. Ain't he keen?

What is your favorite book?
Drawing of the Three

How old are you?
26

Where are you from?
Pacific Northwest, California

do you have a nickname?
See screen name.

how did you find this site?
The internet hype machine was all over the DuBay lawsuit when it started but I couldn't find any info on the details. After some digging I found this place. I was awfully surprised to see Bev Vincent come up in King's deposition as well as that stupid letter R.F. got from DuBay about the members here. Figured I'd try and get in with the Tet. I am an aspiring writer. I have no officially published work and only a few self-published works online, so I'm pretty green but driven. Sai-King is my defacto English teacher. I've been fascinated with his prose for as long as I can remember. I read Hearts in Atlantis not long after its movie came out (very sad they dropped the Can-Toi from the plot but I can change it in my mind). Since I turned 19 I've been studying King's work, among others (the likes of Lovecraft, Tolkien, Robert Chambers, Arthur C. Clarke, and some game writers like Chris Avellone, Tim Cain, Rand & Robyn Miller) with a serious mind toward creating and selling prose of my own, so in part I'm here to network.

I'm excited to hang out and participate in the discussion. I hope to share some stuff here and get critical feed back a little further down the path also.

Long days, pleasant nights!

Hey all,

I only just discovered the existence of this forum today, accidentally while awaiting the ability to post threads on the Stephen King Message Board... but as the Dark Tower is my favourite King series, I think I may like it here more anyway! Can't wait to get involved in the discussion! However, this is only my second post, so I have a few more to make until I can pose my own ideas...

In the mean time...

How did you discover the Dark Tower? Growing up my mum loved the DT books, and I have strong memories as a kid of her pining for the next books release. When I was older I discovered the joys of Stephen King starting with IT and then The Green Mile. After this I thought it was about time I found out what all my mum's fuss over the DT books was about. I bought the DT audiobooks, read by the amazing Frank Muller (2-4) and George Guidall (1, 5, 6 & 7). I have listened to them on near repeat (along with a certain fantasy series mainly involving Ice and Fire) since the start of my PhD, which has found me looking down a microscope for hundreds and hundreds of hours with my ears free.

Who is your favorite character? Of the White? Eddie Dean / Cuthbert Allgood for sure, they are so similar it is hard to pick- but perhaps Cuthbert has the edge. May be boring to some- but it's true. If I am honest though, I do often find myself drawn towards the characterisations and personalities of those who serve the Red, Eldred Jonas being at the top of the pile of fantastic dark characters.

What is your favorite book? Again with my indecisiveness, but it has to be either Book 2 or Book 4. Book 4 is such a fantastic story, with the metropolitan start and the old-west middle. It is satisfying, insightful, and incredibly bitter-sweet with a great setting, arch and characters. Of all the books I find this one evokes the most varied and strongest emotional responses from me. Also it contains Cuthbert of course. In terms of the books focusing on the main plot, Book 2 will always stick with me as a special one. While elements of other books form particular highlights, the entirety of Drawing stands out to me as amazing. Also it was the first book that truly got me hooked on Roland and his quest, so I feel I owe it my great thanks.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

Always been a fantasy nerd and a Stephen King fan, so it just seemed inevitable that I would end up a DT fan.

Who is your favorite character?

Roland. He was an anti-hero Vic Mackey before anti-heros were a thing. I like complex characters, and it's great to find a character that you root for even though he's not that nice a guy, until it gets later towards the end.

What is your favorite book?

Wizard & Glass. I love the backstory.

The official SKMB used to be open every day. At one time it was even open on weekends. I think the moderator is in the process of retiring. It has always been a cliquey forum. Those people have known each other for years and they tend to ignore new members. Sometimes it was like digital high school hell.

Pretty much everyone in King's staff, and even King himself want to reduce or eliminate participation in running the board, doing public signings, book tours etc.
King has stated (through Marsha) that he no longer wants to sign books or do tours.
King just wants to (understandably ) spend his twilight years just writing.

His staff has also subscribed to that feeling.

Hello! I am a fellow Dark tower / Stephen King fan. It's great being part of this community. I have both listened and read the entire Dark tower series (except wind through the keyhole). I have many things to talk about and can't wait to share it with you!

Hi ya’ll,

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I originally saw a preview for the Gunslinger at the movies and it looked like something I’d be interested in....never got around to seeing it. I also saw it was based on a Stephen King novel.. which also got me interested as I have read a few SK books in my time. Most recently The Outsider.

Forgot all about it until I had a book voucher to spend and saw The Gunslinger on the shelf, the rest is history!!

Who is your favorite character?

Roland is my favourite, I found it hard to put the books down when we were following his trail and storyline.

Special mentions go to Oy and Sheemie!

What is your favorite book?

Wizard and Glass is my favourite, I found the back story of Roland and his early life most interesting. Plus I’m a sucker for a bit of a love story. Lost it completely when Susan was burned and Roland didn’t save her!

How old are you?

45!

Where are you from?

Melbourne, Australia

Do you have a nickname?

Mel is popular, I get a lot of Mum too!

How did you find this site?

Google, everyone’s best friend!
