a friend knew I loved sci-fi AND fantasy (really only Tolkien....and Lewis) but not necessarily Stephen King and said that nevertheless I should check this out. I was very pleasantly surprised

I think Roland Deschain of Gilead is one of the best examples of fictional characterization ever penned, so I guess I'd have to say: Roland

The Drawing of the Three on days that end with "y" and The Dark Tower on days that start at 12:00 am with one day off every other June 19 for The Gunslinger

I waited to do this till I had a few posts, see if I liked it. I really dig the joint.
I like the Beam Bucks concept too, makes me feel like I'm earning money. :thumbsup:

I joined up last year, but didn't post till recently. I was a lurker over at DT.net, till they shut down. Still not sure what happened there, they had a "we won't commit suicide" page, then the link just went dead. Sad.

So I lurk here now.

I do have one newbie question.

1. One section I post in, a pictures thread, it says the post must be approved by a mod before it will post my reply. Is this because of my low post count, or are certain sections just like that?




How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I knew of King growing up, but thought him too violent. Thought him pure horror, which I don't like. I want the "good guy" to prevail. So I ignored his books till I saw The Stand in the store with Gary Sinese on the cover sometime in the 90's. This was right after Forest Gump had come out, and I was a Lt. Dan fan, so I decided to try it out.

I loved the book and it turned me into an instant King fan. Yes, there were brutal shock jock parts that were way past my threshold, but I found them almost like real life, bad stuff happens. Didn't seem like it was just some book that a bunch of innocent people get killed by a serial killer slasher. People died in droves, yes, but King seemed to have a soul.

After that I started getting King books, and my wife saw this and got me Dark Tower 3, the Wastelands. I was blown away.

What an awesome read. Every word of that book just felt "right". I was a little peeved at the cliffhanger, and like everyone else, had to wait a long time for Wizard and Glass, but not as long as most, I think it was just a few years.

I went and read the Gunslinger after that, and loved it too. I actually found it almost perfect as well, though the style was different. It was short and tight and real. I have the updated version now as well, I like both.

Since then, I'v read just about every King book, with the expection of some of the earlier ones like Carrie and Cujo.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Roland is I think. But the Man in Black is a close second. I don't really like the guy, but I find this storyline super interesting.


What is your favorite book?

Tie between Wastelands and Dark Tower 7.

Hi there, my names Nic and i would like to intoduce myself to everyone.

Well i discovered 'The Dark Tower' 3 years ago when i was looking through the bookshelf at WHSmiths. I had read a few Stephen King novels (i love IT and Dreamcatcher) and so it appealed to me being a series of more fantasy style books. Yeah i like Tolkien and Pratchet but i don't do POTTER!!!! Anyway i was actualy on holiday when i bought my first book.... The wolves of Calla from a second hand store. It was a fantastic book with gorgeous illustrations. But i didn't read it until i had bought the first book and read the subsequent others. Ever since i have been addicted to the books and went back to that 2nd hand store and bought all the beautiful illustrated books to keep forever as a collectors geeky thing! lol

My favourite character is Roland and i do have an image of him in a tattoo on my arm.

The Wolves of Calla is my favourite book as i love how Callaghan comes into it.

I'm 29 years old.

Well I was given a copy of the Drawing of the three shortly after it was released because I was just really getting into Mr. Kings wonderful world. I started to read it and had to immediatly stop and find a copy of the Gunslinger and haven't looked back since.

My dad is a huge Stephen King fan, and growing up he'd always gave me the books to read after he did. Sometimes I'd try to read and give up (The Stand is a bit hardcore to an eight year old) sometimes they'd captivate me more than any other media I had been exposed to (I remember reading Firestarter cover to cover in one sitting at 11 maybe).

Anyway, dad gave me the gunslinger saying he'd given up on it, it was too weird for him. With that prejudice in my mind I read up to the Oracle and gave up also. But what i did read stuck in my mind for the next 10-12 years. I could not live the rest of my life without finding out if Roland would catch the Man in Black, so at 25 i picked the Gunslinger up again and never looked back.

Eddie Dean.

What is your favorite book?

now that's a toughie...but i've got a soft spot for The Drawing Of The Three, that one really made me a Tower Junkie.

I was always a Stephen King fan. I had read the books Christine, Pet Semetery, and Dream Catcher. I had not been interested in the DT series until the announcement that SK was going to finish the series. I decided to see what the fuss was about so I read volumes 1-4. I was hooked and then I finished the series.

Who is your favorite character?
I happen to like Detta Walker. (The bad side of Odetta/ Susannah) She is mean as a snake and tough as nails. She is also very smart, but she acts like she is stupid to trick people.

In the DT series Drawing of the Three. Overall SK my favorite is The Dead Zone.

Had always been currious about King, but wasnt a big horror fan. One day in 7th grade, a friend of mine hands me Eyes Of The Dragon. I devoured it over the weekend, and when I came back on monday he hands me THE GUNSLINGER and DRAWING OF THE THREE. With a smile he says, "Okay, now try these." Been hooked ever since.

I think thats the sign of a true friend, one whom you can never forget. Anyone who introduces you to The Tower has got to be someone to cherish forever.

Toss up. I like Roland, 'cause hes our hero. I like Eddie, cause he's fun. I see a lot of myself in both of them.

Strangely enough, there was an old copy back in my high school library of the Gunslinger. It wasn't until the final 3 novels were released that I decided to read the revised edition, though.

Eddie. I love his twisted sense of humour!

Oooooooh, difficult. The Drawing of the Three was something i really whizzed through, but the Waste Lands seemed much better with a 2nd read. I'd say DotT, just because it was such a great introduction to so many great characters.

I'm a huge fan of Lost. Way back in season 1 I think, people were comparing some of it to The Dark Tower, so that originally piqued my interest. Then I read The Gunslinger Born and The Long Road Home graphic novels from Marvel and got hooked. I'm reading the books now and I'm about half-way through Wizard and Glass (I started about a month ago and usually I read very slow) and I feel like I'm addicted to them. I dream about the Dark Tower. When I go to work, all I want to do is go back home and read. I'm loving this series.

Quite by accident really. Found a used copy of The Gunslinger while rummaging for more of the classic SK stuff. Read it a couple of times and after a couple of years found out that it was part of a series much to my surprise. A coworker loaned me the other three that were published at the time. Now I have various editions of the series that give the collection the appearance of a patchwork quilt.

Drawing of the Three. I like origin stories and I really consider The Gunslinger more of a preamble. DotT gets the ball rolling.
