Hi everyone! I was just thinking about rereading the series, and was bored so googled it and found this! There is nothing like finding someone who has read the series and being about to talk about it so this is pretty cool.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
My brothers had all started reading it and were at different points in the series, and I couldn't be left out. A few chapters into The Gunslinger and I was hooked, unfortunately I started reading them the week before finals, my grades took a serious hit haha

Who is your favorite charcter?
Jake, although I loved all of them really

What is your favorite book?
The Wastelands

How old are you?
I'm 19

Where are you from?
Connecticut

do you have a nickname?

Hi Emily! Welcome to the site. I've been thinking of doing a reread too. :orely:

I'm pretty sure we have a specific thread for people rereading the series in MidWorld (which is the forum specifically for discussing the series). If you do decide to do a reread you should check it out. :D

hello, everybody,

I'm a kind of new fan of Stephen King (The first king's novel I read was Insomnia, about 7 years ago), and I'm now at the fourth book of The Dark Tower series. Wizard and Glass is being the best DT book I read until now.

I'm not really a huge fan of the confusions on Marten/Walter/Flagg/Farson identities, I hope some day (not so far, I expect) that SK will be revising the entire series.

Oh, and I'm Brazilian, Astronomy's Student and a huge fan of DUNE either! So any Dune fans that doesn't like the new books you can talk to me any time!

Long days and pleasant nights!

Hello Everyone:)

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I've been a long time Stephen King reader. Never could quite break into the Gunslinger...BUT...seemed to love all the Tower related stories and books, (Like "Insomnia" for instance) and friends kept telling me, "Christy, you should read TDT series...you will LOVE it." Well, many many many years later and about 90 days ago I picked up "The Gunslinger" and I just must have been ready. I've been chewing through the series like mad for the last three months and kicking myself for waiting so long.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Eddie Dean. I think that I *am* Eddie Dean.

What is your favorite book?

It's a tough cross between "Wizard and Glass" and "The Dark Tower". I think the last book wins.

How old are you?

My Grandmother used to say that a woman who will tell her age will tell anything.

Okay, I'm 46.

Where are you from?

Born in Dallas, Texas. Most of my family from So. Illinois where I still own 4 acres and a graveyard. Lived most of my live in Southern California.

do you have a nickname?

I have a few, starting with "Brick" in High School as in Brick House because my last name is House.

Weirdly enough I have a very close friend who has always called me "Kes", for no known reason that he could ever tell me. I happen to know he has not read TDT. Imagine my amazement when it turns out that "Kes" is another word for the strength of the Beam. That's why I'm using it here.

Welcome to the site, Kes! :grouphug:

So you own a graveyard? That's spooky! Is it a family plot?

Yes, it's the old graveyard that was on the family farm. The farm was held by family members up until the last few years. Most of the land got sold off, but I saved a bit of it. I guess it IS a little spooky...but mostly it's peaceful. It's smack dab in the middle of a cornfield. You find shed deer antlers and the like because they move through it at night. Only about 70 graves or so...

http://genealogytrails.com/ill/perry/housecemeterymap.html

It's hard to say but late 1700's is the oldest KNOWN grave. My parents were buried there and digging is always a bit tricky because many of the folks buried there over the years we lost track of...

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I remember it well. It was the late eighties, and I was in a bookstore not unlike the one described in DT3. I was growing tired of reading comics, and something in my head told me to look for a Stephen King series that wouldn't be told all in one book, so I picked up the paperback edition of the Gunslinger.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Roland Deschain of Gilead.

What is your favorite book?

It's a tossup between DT3 and DT5

Hi everyone,

I'm girl at the window. I'm from NYC and I finished the last book in the Dark Tower Series a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to discussing what I've read (especially the ending) with other readers.

The first book I read in the series was The Drawing of Three. I read it many, many years ago. I had just finished reading The Stand (I loved it) for the first time and wanted to read something else by Stephen King. I had no idea The Drawing of Three was part of a series when I started to read it. It was like nothing else that I had ever read before. I quickly found and read The Gunslinger. I was looking forward to the 3rd book, The Wastelands. When it came out I quickly bought it and then the strangest thing happened. For some reason I just couldn't get through that book. I just couldn't get into it.

Then late last year I finished it and quickly raced through the rest of the books. It was really convenient for me that during the time I took a hiatus from The Dark Tower books, Sai King was busy writing his butt off. Talk about instant gratification, as soon as I was done with one book I was right onto the next. I think my kids were getting really annoyed with me always reading all the time.

Anyway I'm looking forward to many future discussions of the books.

Thank you Hannah, I did it!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

ETA: I have been searching around the board, but I can't seem to find what I am looking for. I would like to know all the stories and books that are related to the DT series, but more importantly, I would like to know if there is a certain order in which to read them. As of now, I have read everything King ( that I know of) except The Talisman. I have to go back and read that, as soon as I am done with Black House. Backwards, I know. But I want to reread the DT series, adding in all stories or books that are related. Once I found a flowchart online, but it is gone now, can't find it anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

idk, my bff jill?
01-25-2009, 10:27 AM

Molly, I know which flowchart you mean, but I haven't been able to find it either.
Try going here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Tower_(series)#Connections_to_King.27s_ot her_works). They have a list of all the related books and short stories.
Hope that helps. :)

Greetings Sai(s)! I finished the 7th book about 7 months ago. A friend on a hockey message board turned me on to them and I started with book one and was hooked by the end of the first sentence..."The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.". No matter how much I tried to read them slowly to savor the experience I just couldn't stop reading. The most I was able to put one down was about a day and a half. It was almost like being in a trance or being in a different world. I don't think my mind has completely left Midworld though - I'm still looking for my door out!

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I was and still am hungry for books specially for Stephen King stories, then suddenly I found in a bookstore an English version of "The drawing of the three" and purchased it. After reading the introduction I had to have all of em and was rather surprised that the last three weren't even written then.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Hmm...
Tough one, I would say all the main characters including sub characters like Cort, Susan, Steven, Gabrielle, Marten, Walter, Gasher, Jonas...
You get my point, the only Character I could have done without is Cordelia Delgado, she somehow seemed to be non-developing at all.

What is your favorite book?

Since I would count all seven as one book, I'd say The Dark Tower as a whole. But for the questions sake I would guess both "Tdott" and "Wag".

How old are you?

30 and counting

Where are you from?

Mid-World (Or Central Europe if it please ya, Switzerland).

do you have a nickname?

I go mostly by the name "Cid"

Meanwhile I read The Dark Tower several times, don't remember how many times in English, twice in German and twice in Spanish (Just to make it clear, the German translation is awful. After the second read I found so many mistakes in it...).
The main problem I have at the moment, is that theres almost no story left that feels right, everything pales comparing it to The Dark Tower and this is not good. Thanks to some good writers out there, there might still be hope I find a good book somewhere again. Most books I read, I just read em once and that's it but with stories like "The Stand, It, Insomnia, Eragon, Lord of the rings and other similar ones" I can take them over and over again as well as this one.

Long days and pleasant nights to all of you.

Thanks for the welcome,

I know exactly what you mean ICry40y. I think you worded it perfectly. Reading DT is like being in a trance. Total escapism from my busy world. SK is the master.
I still feel like I haven't had enough of it. I am currently reading DT Concordance and the first hardcover of the DT Marvel Comics. I usually don't read comics but I am so hooked on the storyline that I am enjoying this one. I hope that what El Cid says about finding another good book to read after finishing DT is wrong. I haven't tried yet. It would completely stink if that was true.

It's not that bad really. I read a few books after finishing the first time and I was looking for new and different writers. Before that I was pretty much hooked on SK and it might have to do with the style of these other writers. Also after reading a story like this, (also Tolkiens Lotr and Paolinis Eragon) I had always the feeling that after the one book it can't be over yet :orely: if you understand my meaning.

I will be looking out for other stories that catch me like this one did. Currently I'm carrying again Wolves of the Calla with me ;)
Sometimes I think I'm not quite normal for reading it again, but there are so many details and implications that it sometimes even makes sense...

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I was in fourth grade and was a SK fan from the movies I had seen. I saw a bargain book with a train on the front and SK’s name on it, so I bought it. I tried to read it in fifth grade, but realized that it was part of a series. So I picked up the Gunslinger the next year and started reading.

Who is your favorite character?
Mike Noonan, Ben Hanscom, and of course (after crying after finishing the DT VII) Roland
What is your favorite book?
It, Bag of Bones and DT II

How old are you?

Where are you from?
Born in Western Kansas, currently live in Eastern Kansas

Hello all, I've been lurking around this board for some time and finally decided to make an account so that I can chime in on some of the discussions. And as for the TC's questions:

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
A good friend of mine told me about the series long ago before I read any of Sai King's books, years later after reading a few of his books (namely IT, Desperation, and Insomnia), I became obsessed with King's multiverse and simply had to read the Dark Tower series.

Who is your favorite charcter?
Very hard to say, but i think I have to go with either Jake Chambers or Randal Flagg.

What is your favorite book?
Once again, hard to say, either Wastelands or Song of Susannah

How old are you?
I am 27

Where are you from?
south Texas

do you have a nickname?
not really, sorry.

Anyway, this board seems really awesome and I'm very excited to start discussing all things King related, thanks. :)

I'm brand spanking new and I'm a little nervous about hanging out here since I am only half way through Wizard and Glass - I don't want to find out too much before I get a chance to read it.

Anyway, here's some answers to some questions

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I've read Stephen King for years and years and once I heard the final DT was coming out I decided to finally see what all the fuss is about. Glad I did.

Who is your favorite charcter?
This is hard. Probably Blaine - I'm a sucker for bad guys.

What is your favorite book?
So far the Wastelands.

How old are you?
28

Where are you from?
Salt Lake

do you have a nickname?
His Highness, Your Majesty, or Sir (if you're into the whole brevity thing).
No, I don't have a nickname.

El Cid - Is your name a reference to El Cid Campeador?

Exactly, supposedly my profile pic shows his sword. I love his legend even though he was known to fight for many different sides during the wars that were. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar received his nickname from the moorish folk who saw him as a lord or master (sidi). And myths proclaim he was invulnerable even though the legend explains why this is believed. :wtf:

In a way after reading the Dark Tower, while thinking about such tales (also William Tells tale in Switzerland) I come to believe these characters were gunslingers of their times.

idk, my bff jill?

Hello! I am new here.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

Since I found Carrie in my old grandma's attic, I have been a Stephen King fan. After many of his books, I found The Gunslinger (revised version) in a bookshoop and fell in love with it until now.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Roland Deschain (of course) and Henry Dean.

What is your favorite book?[/B]

Drawing of the three, my all-time favourite book.

How old are you?

Eighteen

Where are you from?

Im from Spain, but I live in Northern Ireland at the moment.

Well, I don't think I ever posted here but, I could be wrong.

I have enjoyed SK since he was drinking beer and pissing his pants. lol Long time fan I have read the DT series from first publishing to the end.

I have many favorites: The Shining, Black House Dark Tower etc. and have ALWAYS enjoyed his writing. In spite of the fact that I am a Yankee fan tried and true (Boston Sucks!!)

Was a DT.Net member during the last 3 books times. And I am an avid collector (I have a Galley Proof of "Bag of Bones" of which only 20 exist) that is my pride and joy.

I'm also older than dirt and a died in the wool New Yorker (I'll take that knish now!!)

In anycase Hi!! to all and long days and pleasant nights!!

Hello everyone, I'm Aaron. Looking forward to meeting you all.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I came across The Gunslinger at a used book store when I was thirteen. I had read just about everything Stephen King had written by then. I picked the book up and read the first few pages, I was hooked instantly. Over the next year I read all of The Gunslinger, all of the Drawing, and half of The Wastelands. Over the next few years I kinda lost touch with the series and left it unfinished. About 3 years ago (at age 25) I rediscovered the series. I started over with The Gunslinger and finished the entire series. Right now, I'm on my fifth reading thru, and I just started The Wolves of the Calla.

Who is your favorite character?

After lots of thought, I have to say Eddie Dean. I feel I can relate to him the most. I too have had a monkey on my back that I have overcome, as well as an overbearing sibling that haunted my every move. I believe he is the glue of the Ka-tet, holding everything together with his humor. My second favorite would have to be Cuthbert though his is such a small role in the saga.

What is your favorite book?

Right now it's Wizard and Glass, I love Roland's back story. It is truly epic. . the budding of his one true love, the conflict with the Big Coffin Hunters, The double crossing and the demise of Susan. .Epic is the best word I can come up with.. . Close second would have to be Wolves of the Calla. I love how King brought Father Callighan into the story.

How old are you?

I'm 27, 28 in March.

Where are you from?

Tucson, Az

Do you have a nickname?

I got into SK a bit in high school thanks to my father, and then some of my close friends began DT, and I followed after them. I finished before them, despite them introducing it to me!

Who is your favorite character?
Hmm...Cuthbert was always one of my favorites, for sure. But I sure do love Jake and Oy.

What is your favorite book?
I don't think I could choose! They're all so good in their own ways. Though Wizard and Glass sticks out to me because I remember getting used to Roland's new ka-tet and thinking "Oh great...more characters? But I was just liking these guys!" Yet once I was familiar with Roland's old ka-tet I didn't want to go back!

Hi, guys. :D I found this site whilst browsing for DT tattoo ideas, and thought I'd go wild and register. :)

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I've always been a huge Stephen King fan, and due to this, my dear Mum bought Wolves Of The Calla for me one Christmas, a few years back. Not wanting to start mid-series, I put off reading it for a while, but then the temptation just corrupted me!
I couldn't put it down, and still stands as possibly THE best book I've ever read. The Drawing Of The Three stands alongside it.

Someone said in another msg that the 1st post is the hardest. I haven't posted anything on any type of forum for about 4 or 5 years.......but here goes:

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

X-wife bought me Gunslinger for my birthday. I had been an avid King reader before that with the exception of DT and Eyes of the Dragon. Not horror, SO not Stephen King was my reasoning. But, I read it out of obligation. Obligation became intrigue became fascination became obsession, etc, etc, etc.....

Who is your favorite character?

Would have to go with Eddie Dean. Roland was raised in the gunslinger lifestyle. Eddie, on the other hand had a lot to over come (personal problems, culture shock) to become what he was destined to be.

What is your favorite book?

The Stand. That is the only book that really ever scared me. I was 13 years old, and alone in our huge OLD farmhouse. I was at the part where Larry Underwood was going through the Lincoln Tunnel. S C A R Y! To say the least, i had to wait for daylight to resume reading.

How old are you?

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
Randomly. My Dad was always a SK fan, so I began young. I had already read several books when I was 14, but my Dad didn't have the Dark Tower series. I didn't find the Gunslinger until I was 17. A friend of mine was being domestically abused by her step-dad, and I helped her escape. After I helped her move, I found the Gunslinger in my back seat. I read it in a day, then went out and got copies of the others. My friend said she doesn't know where it came from, and nobody else drove my car (which had just been cleaned.) Ka, maybe? lol

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
Quite a while ago !!! I've been a constant reader since 1985. I was 16 when I started to read Stephen King books and I immediatly became addicted to his universe... Needed to read more and more... Being French, I only had access to translated books. But I needed more. So I started to try to read them in English too. In the beginning, it was quite hard but little by little, it all got better... I discovered that some of the novels had not been translated... I needed them... I started to collect more and more and more... And I came across The Dark Tower path and THAT was some revelation !!! The Tower haunted me for years after that !!!
In 1992, I wanted to share this passion with other readers. I then created a club in my university : CLUB STEPHEN KING LILLE. And I was really surprised to see that there were so many people wanting to share. The club spread threw the years. We released a fanzine in French that dealt with Stephen King books (their studies, analysis etc.). We called it "Steve's Rag" (lol).
In 1996, my university sent me to Maine to work on King books... It was so great discovering Maine. And that was a really lucky time. At the University of Orono, I met Burton Hatlen and had an "interview" with him about Stephen King as a student. I went to the Foggler Library when I got access to a famous box containing rare manuscripts from King. I also got lucky enough to get a hand on some Maine Campus texts I thought I'd never found.
I was also lucly to meet Stuart Tinker from Bett's Bookstore who helped me a lot around Bangor. Thanks to him, I had access to the Bangor airport where the wreck of the plane used for the Langoliers film was displayed... I went to Lisbon Falls, Durham... And some cool place along route 15 where the real Pet Sematary was... I found the house where the book was written (thanks to a picture found in George Beahms books) and the two old ladys who lived in way back then were kind enough to let me in.
But the moment I'll treasure my entire life was when I met Stephen King at a signing !
Some pictures of that moment here : http://club.stephenking.free.fr/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=142
Back in France, with friends, we developped a website about King and I started working on a huge study about the Dark Tower.
But life, some times, also give bad surprises... And I got quite bad ones...
I had to quit for a while... In a few months, I lost several people that meant a lot to me... Some died... Some got away with no reasons... And I started to slowly go down and down and down... Started to lose interested in life...
It took me 5 whole years to regain strength and fight back.
Now, I feel a lot better and I try to fill the years I lost...
Glad to be back !

Who is your favorite charcter?
Jake !!!!!

Thanks a lot.

I wish I had found this site back when I was reading the books, but I have them all at home so a good reason to read them again.

Roland, although he's my favourite character, makes me a little sad. He's such a noble guy, really selfless and brave.

The Dark Tower series has consistently brought me to tears in the past, there are some moments that are actually painful to read (Oy, for example).

I have a friend who is reading them for the first time right now and he is out of his mind with excitement, literally bursting with the need to talk about TDT and all of the characters.

Father Callahan is another favourite of mine.

That settles it, starting to read The Gunslinger today.

Thank you for making this site a reality, it's very cool.

Besides my school forums [where I turn in homework], this is the only forum I've ever partaken in, due to my [relatively new] obsession with Stephen King's series.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

Well, there isn't really a back story. I remember I just finished a reread of A Song of Ice and Fire, and I was lost on what to read afterwords. I found the Gunslinger on a bookshelf. It was short [I usually like a long, winded story], but Stephen King was a name I've heard [but never read], so I decided to give it a go. Frankly, I didn't like the Gunslinger that much at all. The mood of the book was supposed to be dark, spooky, quiet, all those things. But it sorta sounded dull at key points. Admittedly, the landscaping was superbly done, and the details about the fight in Tull were great, but it was mostly the stories of Roland's childhood that kept me on the road of the Beam. Especially that of Hax. I thought [and still think] the man's a hero. Whoever he works for. I was pleased to see that in Drawing, the story really picked up, and I soon became obsessed. I whizzed through the second and third book, but I couldn't get a copy of Wizard and Glass here in Warsaw, so I was stuck for a month in that aggravating Blaine cliffhanger. Waiting was very painful. I almost skipped a party, that actually I was very happy not to skip, it was kickass, just to read Wizard and Glass when it came through mail. =P

Who is your favorite character?

It used to be Cuthbert Allgood, but now I think Father Callahan overtook him. His story in Wolves was excellent. Although I've never read Salem's Lot, I thought the confrontation with Barlow[?] was the best part of Wolves, and I'm planning to read Salem's Lot after I finish the Dark Tower series.

What is your favorite book?

Uhhh. I really don't know. I tend to forget books relatively easily. But the ones that always stayed in my mind were Xenocide by Orson Scott Card, A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin.
If that was concerning my favorite book in the Dark Tower series, I'd say Wizard and Glass.

How old are you?

14

Where are you from?

Seoul, Korea. If I was born two days later I'd be born in Los Angeles, California. But right now I'm in Warsaw, Poland. If anyone cares I've interviewed Szpilman's wife. t'was amazing =D

Um. Not really. People just call me by half my first name or my last name.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?

I was really big fan of "The Talisman" and "The Black House". While reading the latter, I noticed references to "gunslingers of old" and "Ka". After doing further research, I obviously found my answer, so I immediately went out and bought "The Gunslinger". I have been a fan ever since.

Who is your favorite charcter?

Probably, Jake; only because he reminds of Jack Sawyer age 12.

How did you discover the Dark Tower? Always been a SK fan. A friend of mine turned me on to the Dark Tower and have read the series twice since.

Who is your favorite charcter? Tough one. Maybe Oy. However, RF is a big part for me since I read Eyes of the Dragon prior to DT.

What is your favorite book? Wizard and Glass

How old are you? 25

Where are you from? GA, USA

do you have a nickname? Boz

I look forward to being a part of this community. So many people that are interested in fantasy need to be exposed to the macroverse!

How did you discover the Dark Tower? Seemingly by accident one day when I decided to go into the local book store. I was never referred by anyone. Actually the Wizard and Glass book jumped out at me when I was walking by, I saw that it was part of a series so I picked up the The Gunslinger. The rest is history....

Who is your favorite charcter? I'd say my fav is probably Jake.

What is your favorite book? Drawing of the Three and Wastelands

How old are you? 28

Where are you from? OH, USA

do you have a nickname? Sometimes Ruke....I actually go by Roland in an online playstation game
