welcome to the site Lady Macbeth!
Hello there!
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I saw the cover and the title at a book store, saw that it was by Stephen King (I didn't know about the series before 2006), saw that it was "his Lord of the Rings", saw that it was sort of a mix of fantasy and western - had to buy it :)
Who is your favorite charcter?
Gotta be Roland.
What is your favorite book?
Wizard and Glass.

Hello everyone. I was dismayed to discover tonight on one of my periodic stops back that tdt.net was no longer even resolving, and when I did some digging I was surprised (and happy) to find this site! A few old-timers from there might remember me; I was Mr. Martin there, and attended at least a couple of events (Bev's reading and the seafood dinner the night before) at Palavercon Zero, with Aaron and Tamez.
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
My brother put me on to it, shortly before The Waste Lands came out. I was always firmly in the "Skip The Gunslinger and pick up with the Argument in TDot3" camp when recommending the series, to be honest.
Who is your favorite character?
Hmmm... probably Eddie.
What is your favorite book?
I think The Waste Lands. You whippersnappers will never know what it was like to wait for years before finding out what happened in the riddling contest.
How old are you?
In my early 40's.
Where are you from?
Portland, Maine
Do you have a nickname?
Well, at .net I used Mr. Martin, but the one I have taken here will do, say thankya.
welcome MarkHB!

42 years old here. I originally started the series in the early 90's, and it didn 't hook me. I think I got 1/3 of the way through the 2nd book and lost interest.
However, this past summer, I started anew, am now 1/3 of the way through the final book, and loving it.
I think the journey from young and cocky to middle aged and introspective, in my own life, is what has hooked me this time around. Having "traveled the road" is the only way, for me, to now appreciate the changes in story and writing style in the series.

Howdy All...
Answering the questions from the start of the thread:
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
Quite by accident. I had just recently finished The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and had returned the books to my local public library and was looking for something new to read when I noticed two books sitting together on a display stand near the counter. These were The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three. I might have ignored them if not for their shared series title: The Dark Tower.
Something drew me to those three words way back in the late 80's and I just knew I had to read them. I had no previous experience of King's work at that time.
Although it may no doubt sound strange to some of you, The Dark Tower books had a significant impact on my life and continued to do so as I waited for each new book to be released. I delighted in every mention of Roland, Mid-World and the Dark Tower in King's other books. Roland, his quest, his companions and his challenges have fascinated me from the day I first read the words 'The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.'
Who is your favorite character?
So many interesting characters it's far too difficult to choose. My favourite of Roland's core ka-tet would have to be Edward Cantor Dean.
What is your favorite book?
In the Dark Tower series, The Waste Lands followed by Wolves of the Calla. Out of all of King's books, my favourite is The Stand. Out of all his total work, my favourite is the mini-series Rose Red.
How old are you?
Older than my teeth but younger than my hair.
Where are you from?
A long but not very fascinating story. Born in the UK, moved to Australia at 5, moved back to the UK at 17, then finally to the United States at 27 (while managing to visit a number of other countries along the way).
Do you have a nickname?
I've been called by many names, both fair and foul over the years. I don't much care what anyone calls me so long they don't call me late for dinner.
Well that's that. Hope I haven't bored too many folks.
Stay Frosty

That's quite a screen name,
how did you come up with that one?
Back in the 70's and 80's, when kids could still "hurt each others' feelings" on the playground, calling someone a "booger eating spazmanatic" was one of my favorites.
The sheer visual of the act always amused me, and the name came to me when I needed a moniker for some forgotten forum years ago.
I can be quite the spazmanatic also, as my long line of forum bannings can attest to. But most of them were political forums, and thus my bad side was always on display.

How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I picked up The Gunslinger in a SE Texas B-Dalton bookstore in 1988, when I was 13. Read it quickly. It grew on me, but I didn't take the PLUNGE. Read it again in 1994, and it grew on me a bit more, but still, I refused to take the PLUNGE. Read it a third and final time in August of 2008 -- and took the PLUNGE. Finished DT VII on Nov. 7.

Hi all
Just started the great DT re-read of '08, which made me think of tdt.net. Evidently it has perished, but I found this place so thought I would say hi.
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
Was 13, and doing a day trip to the tooth doctor. Hanging out in a bookstore waiting to catch my ride home, and the guy in the store gave me a copy of The Gunslinger. The next trip down DotT was just released, and I picked that up from there as well.
13 years later I made a trip back to that town, to the same store and the same owner (still there), to pick up book 7 when it was released.

What's up guys...I have been checking out this site for a few months and finally decided to join up. I am more of a reader then a collector but I feel that changing quickly now...
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
A former roommate of mine and me discussed SK a lot over the years. He had read DT some time ago and borrowed me some of his softcovers about 3 1/2 years ago. He did not tell me which order to read them in. I think I started with Wastelands and then DotT and then The Gunslinger. Completely confused I gave up. Got back into SK earlier this year and started getting the DT series put together for myself. Now I am reading them.
Who is your favorite character?
So far, Roland.
What is your favorite book?
Hands down, no matter what, the one I am reading.
How old are you?
About to turn the big 3-0.
Where are you from?
The city of beer, Wisconsin.
Looking forward to discussing the Tower with all of you.....

You know what would be neat? To have a poll set up to find the average age of the person when they found the dark tower...
Hey Todash and Deder--great to meet you both.
That's a good idea for a poll Liz, feel free to go for it if you like.

O Hyperborean Wanderer
11-27-2008, 10:47 AM
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
It was the spring of 1989 (19 years ago!) when I read Cujo and first entered the mad, fantastic world of Stephen King. I read the first two (and only, up to that point) Dark Tower books that same summer along with a great deal of King's other books, as well. I've been a Constant-Tower-Reader-Junkie ever since.
Who is your favorite charcter? Heroes or Villains? For heroes, it's Eddie Dean. But Jake gets a VERY close second. Walter is far and away the best villain. Who else but Walter could flee across the desert in the beginning of the first book and the cycle entire, end up as the final major death in the first book, be the first major death in the final book and still manage to flee across the desert at the end of the same book and the cycle itself? Pure Walter.
What is your favorite book? The Waste Lands. For so many reasons, both within the novel and my own experiences while reading the book. From the first time, in December 1991, when I was struck by a mini-van on my walk home from school with the then brand-new book in my knapsack, right up to my using it as a guide book this last spring in New York. May 31st, the day Jake found the Rose, is the day I first visited 2 Hammarskjold Plaza.
How old are you? "Old enough to vote and not old enough for Social Security."
Where are you from? The eighth level of King's Tower. Seriously. I can watch my own body dehydrate with clinical, detached attention, watering it's crevices and dark inner hollows only when my logic tells me it must be done.
do you have a nickname? My handle's a long one, say true, but "O Hyper-One" has a nice ring to it, do ya? :)
Great to meet you Wanderer, welcome to the site.

Indeed! And I just got a great deal on some of those old Donald Grant editions, too. Not one of the ones with the Roy Krenkel paintings, though.
The name is, first and foremost, a reference to Cal Tower's nickname for Jake. I've been reading a great deal of the non-King books mentioned in the Dark Tower series (focusing mostly on those referenced in the Waste Lands at the moment) and keeping a sharp eye out for parallels. "The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind" menu alone has been keeping me reading since the beginning of the summer.

Anyway, on with the show!
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
It discovered me shortly after it came into print... I'm one of those that I've already seen mentioned here that has been on the 30 plus year journey with King until he finally finished the thing. I'm so glad he did. After The Waste Lands I had serious doubts he was going to as I'm sure many did.
Who is your favorite charcter?
Roland, of course. There wouldn't be any others if there wasn't first A childe Roalnd to the dark tower came.
What is your favorite book?
Wizard and Glass. I waited so long for that book that when it finally arrived I called in sick and read the whole damn book in one day.

Roland.. He's taut enough to always do what needs to be done, yet soft enough to prove he does indeed have a heart when he needs to.

Wizard and Glass... I found it really touching. Even relatable to a point, moreso than the rest so far.

Thankee-sai! I have been browsing a bit trying to see what to look out for. All will be well, I'm sure. And a spoiler here and there can't hurt. 75% of the enjoyment of ANY King story is the entire journey to the end, not necessarily the events along the way :)

Hello everyone, good to meet you all.
How did I discover the series: Picked the first book, The Gunslinger, of the shelf in a store, read it, loved it and several years later a friend loaned me the next two books, before Wizard and Glass was released, after which I was constantly looking for the next release, which I would then buy and devour inside a few days, then I would read the whole series again while awaiting another book.
Favorite character, Roland is kind of a given, otherwise I would have to say Cort.
Favorite book, The Gunslinger, it had a flavor that the rest of the series didn't, Roland was so much harder and more distant in the book.
Age: 31
From a dirt hole in the middle of Utah.
Nickname: none that I want to repeat.

Hello there everyone. I was pleasantly surprised today to find this after leaving TDT.net, so it'll be good to get back in the swing of things.
How did you discover the series? I picked up a copy of the Gunslinger in a bookstore after my cousin raved all summer about SK when book 7 first came out. Been hooked ever since.
Favorite character? Probably a tie between Roland and Sheemie (I loved him in IV)
Favorite book? DT: Hands down, The Wastelands. Rest of SK: Either The Stand or The Dark Half.
Age? 20.
Where are you from? Originally from a small Wisconsin town, but I'm in school in Chicago, and it's become a familiar place.
Nickname? You'll have to ask me later.;)
It's good to get back into this.

Hi all! I'm rereading the Dark Tower series for the umpteenth time. Currently I'm on Song of Susannah...again. I decided for whatever reason to google "Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind" and it led me here. So I joined and here I am.
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
A little by accident. I started reading Stephen King when I was 12-13. I believe I picked up Pet Sematary and something else (Christine, maybe?) on a whim at the bookstore. They scared the bejeebus out of me, but I was hooked.
Not too long after that, I ended up at a used book sale and wound up with a copy of The Gunslinger...and the rest, as they say, was history.
Who is your favorite character?
I'm torn. I love them all. If I had to choose, it would be Eddie. His backstory is so tragic yet so believable, and he's so strong. I love Roland too, though. And Susannah. And Jake. See what I mean?
What is your favorite book?
Wizard and Glass, hands down. Closely followed by Drawing of the Three. But they're all so good.
How old are you?
Turned 30 on my last birthday. I don't think it's sunk in yet.:beat:
Where are you from?
Originally the USVI. I've lived in a lot of places, but right now I'm in Philly.

It has been too long! I was a member of thedarktower.net for quite some time under the nick name "Song Of Ka". Anyone remember me from there? LOL... At any rate, I have been away far too long, and look forward to catching up with my old friends, and making new ones. On to the introductions:
How did you discover the Dark Tower? In a bookstore.
Who is your favorite charcter? Roland.
What is your favorite book? I see them as seperate chapters, one book. If someone put a gun to my head and forced me to pick one... I would have to say the last one.
How old are you? 30
Where are you from? Florida
do you have a nickname? Ninja-Dork

Thanks for the hearty welcome everyone. This place is huuuge, so much stuff to go through. I love it already. I am finishing school (Philosophy and Croatian Culture), working on my final thesis and I should be writing that, but instead I found myself reading The Dark Tower and now this place... Damn, my timing sucks!
So, to answer the questions:
How did you discover the Dark Tower? Through other King.
Who is your favorite character? Roland, but I have a soft spot for Eddie too.
What is your favorite book? Only read 2 1/2 so far.
How old are you? 27 next month.
Where are you from? Croatia.
Do you have a nickname? Django will do. :)

Welcome rocket.
I suggest you simply read the 7 Dark Tower books in sequential order - 1 to 7.
I know some people will say skip the first and read it after Book 2 (or even 2 & 3) - but I say start on 1 and keep on going.

Welcome Ben Eads!
Hey all,
I've been lurking around here for a few weeks and thought i'd officially say "hello." Over the past few years, I've been bitten by the collecting bug and have added quite a few books over the past 6 months.
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I started reading SK in the early 1990s and picked up The Gunslinger since I hadn't read it yet. I immediately bought 2 and 3 after that, but had to wait a long time for the series to be completed. :)
Who is your favorite character?
Hard to say, probably Eddie.
What is your favorite book?
Of the DT books it's either 3 or 5. As much as I like the DT series, it's not my favorite thing SK has written. My favorites tend to be The Stand, It, and the series of books set in Castle Rock, to name a few.
How old are you?
36
Where are you from?
Currently live in the Los Angeles area.
I'd also like to add that I'm a Tom Waits fan :)

Hey there :D After about a month of lurking around, I decided to join. So ok, here we go:
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I'm a huge Nightwish fan and the guy who writes the lyrics kept praising the Dark Tower in his songs and in interviews and so on and even if it was very hard to find it, I decided I have to read it. And, well, I did.
Who is your favorite charcter? Sheemie. Absolutely. Every time he says or does something I just wish I could be there and hug him.
What is your favorite book? Wizard and Glass
How old are you? 15. *hides*
Where are you from? Romania, somewhere at the end of the earth.
Do you have a nickname? Nawp. That's kinda boring, I guess.
Not boring at all, welcome to the site Glady

Welcome new friends. You have found the perfect place to spend all your free time. :)
Long days and pleasant nights.
Especially if that free time is spent with you, madam Letti. :huglove:
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
I picked up The Gunslinger around Summer of '89 on a whim after reading a few other SK books in the year before. I pretty much became obsessed after reading it and quickly went out and bought The Drawing Of The Three. I then, like a lot of DT fans, waited for years between the next books. I swear I'd break out in cold sweats when I heard a new book in the series was coming out. The only thing that could make me better was more DT. Tower Junkie indeed.
Who is your favorite character?
Too hard to pick, but if I had a gun to my head I'd have to say Eddie.
What is your favorite book?
The Wastelands. I know this isn't a popular opinions with fellow Tower Junkies, but I honestly feel SK wasn't as focused after TWL as he was with the first three books. Don't kill me, it's just an opinion.
How old are you?
31
Where are you from?
Detroit, Michigan
do you have a nickname?
Yep, Tank.

Had popped-in once before but knew about the site from Audrey Price and Michael Whelan. I live with them quite a few months out of the year as I wander around the 'Territories.'
How did you discover the Dark Tower?
A friend gave me a copy of IT when it came out. My first King book. I liked it a lot and picked-up Eyes of the Dragon and Misery that year, then went back and ordered everything in hardcover. Came across the Dark Tower S/N at a convention in NYC for $200 I believe it was. LOVED IT!
Who is your favorite charcter?
I'm in love with Susan Delgado
What is your favorite book?
Wizard and Glass, although I'm partial to the original Gunslinger being my favorite King book. It slightly edges out The Stand
How old are you?
37
Where are you from?
Danbury, CT originally, but now I wander aimlessly about the planet.
Do you have a nickname?
Audrey calls me PhishBob. One, since I toured around seeing the band for so many years and Two, since she has so many other Bob's that she deals with in her life, PhishBob is her differentiation for me.
Thanks for the site. Great stuff! Hope you all like the new LSOE book. I was looking through it last night at Michael & Audrey's house. I won't say anything about it until it's released.
Wow!
Great to meet you PlayPhish, thanks for joining the site.
I think Phishbob is cute as hell.

How did you discover the Dark Tower? - Started reading SK's books after reading an interview in Writers Digest that coincided with On Writing being published. I'm an aspiring writer. After reading the interview, then On Writing, I was hooked. A few months later I borrowed a copy of The Gunslinger, and the rest followed.
Who is your favorite charcter? - Roland, of course!
What is your favorite book? - Either The Dark Tower or Drawing of the Three. Roland looking through Eddie's eyes in the 'sky carriage' has to be one of the greatest scenes ever written.
How old are you? - 48.
Where are you from? - Alabama. Raised in Selma, now live in Birmingham.
do you have a nickname? - My nickname at work is Stephen King (no joke!)
Welcome to the site dsurrett--great to meet you.
