I've been trying for the past twenty minutes or so. No luck whatsoever. Went all the way through the order forms then got some big programming code error message.

Patrick,
I tried it again and it let me all the way through and said thank you for ordering so..... I either have 2 or none coming, If i get 2 confirmations your welcome to the 2nd copy. I only need one !

Rusty
Thanks, Rusty (and to he who PM'ed me). You guys rock. I truly appreciate your generosity.

However it appears that I may be getting one from the source after all! As noted in an earlier post, I sent an email (much thanks to Willie for the recommendation). They responded saying that I had gone through with all the ordering forms and apparently submitted my contact and credit card info so they had all that on record, but it was an empty order (see my post above about the error message) because of their website issues yesterday. Anyway, based on all that, it now appears that they are going to send me a copy.

As soon they hit my credit card for the fee, I'll know for sure and let you know here. :)

Congrats Patrick !

Happy it worked out.

Thanks, Karl. I'll know for sure when they charge my card.

So does the slipcased UK S/L come with or without a dustjacket? I can't tell.

Photos from auction referenced upthread (http://cgi.ebay.com/STEPHEN-KING-UNDER-THE-DOME-LMT-EDI-SIGNED-HB-SLIPCASE_W0QQitemZ300372046263QQcmdZViewItemQQptZU K_Books_Fiction_GL?hash=item45ef91b1b7)

There's another out there now too, with a much larger minimum:

It appears that it does have a dust jacket--the pictures are too ornate to be just stamped boards.

But that seller says his photo is the regular UK trade edition because he does not yet have the S/L.

Grrrr! He also uses the word, "THUS", which really bugs me. Which century do these people live in.

The only time THUS should be used nowadays is in the theme tune for "2001 A Space Odyssey". Even that comes from Friedrich Nietzsche (1891)

:arg::arg::arg:
I think I'm getting too old for this game - I can't see it for sale ANYWHERE

So, let me get this straight. It's on sale on Ebay but not available from the publisher???
None of the usual suspects...amazon, waterstones etc...have it listed for preorder

Could someone advise an obviously doddering man?? :beat:

Oh, and how much will this mighty tome cost?

jhanic
11-29-2009, 04:29 AM
Both Waterstones and Hatchards had it for sale, but pulled the offers after a little while. I managed to order a copy from both. My credit card has not been debited by either so far, though. I did get confirmations of both orders. I check the Hodder & Stoughton site daily and have yet to see it announced, let alone offered. I'll believe my orders have been shipped when I see my credit card debited.

And where did the ebayers get the photos? Unless already in their possession. I've checked every day for a month & Hodder, Waterstones or Hatchards websites have never put up images.
Ceri, the price is £100.

i managed to order 2 from Hatchards, and i even got a call from my credit card company to verify the order. since it was overseas they wanted to be sure i had placed the order.
i also got an email from Hatchards verifying that i wanted 2 copies. So i assume my orders went through.

I was at the bookstore today that's hosting the Dec. 1 event in Portsmouth...

They have all the UtDs he'll be signing in sealed-up shipping boxes, so he's signing them all when he gets here apparently...I'm sort of surprised. It's a lot of books to sign before the event.

But, at the store, all the copies they had for sale had the grey lettering, so maybe the signed copies will too.

He did this at the St. Paul event as well. The stage door has a clear view to part of the backstage. He was sitting at a table there signing them all while we were waiting outside for the doors to open.

That's what my two orders also said.......being processed....till today. I sent Waterstone's an e-mail, asking if they could let me know if I would still receive the books I had ordered.

This was the response I received:

I have chased this item for you and have requested you be contacted via email with the suppliers response as to how much longer this item will be.

And, sometime later, two messages stating: your order has been shipped!

No dustjacket. The boards are cloth, and identical (including the white foil stamping) to the UK trade edition.
Slightly worrying, though, was the packing. It was nothing more than those thin cardboard wraparound jobs. And no internal bubble wrap. Mine was delivered by courier company which probably helped it to survive intact, but I would be worried about the slipcase corners getting dinged if the parcels get a bit of postal abuse. For a £100 book I would have expected a little more packing.....

Hmmm... Let me guess...

1. It has an 'official' limitation page, whereas the US edition did not.

2. It comes with a slipcase, whereas the US edition did not.

3. Even with a weak dollar and the expense of overseas shipping, it still cost less than the US edition.

Am I getting close, Ralph? :D

tippy4
12-01-2009, 01:35 PM
Do the cards have their own compartment, or do they sit directly on top of the book?

Yeah there is a seperate compartment, should have taken a pic of that but didn't think oh well, but these are of the book itself. Very similar in looks to the Uk trade apart from the quality and the endpapers which are of the map of the town, front and back.

Hey Tito, quick question - the words 'Under The Dome' on the spine of the dustjacket in this photo appear to be white text. Is that correct, or are they actually silver foil?

Does the UK S/L have the illustrations that the US S/L does?, I see it has the end papers and the cards but if it doesn't have the illustrations then at least the US edition scores a few points for those.

The same thing happened to me. It took a day before the charge showed up.

I just got an email from my CC company. They blocked the charge from Waterstone's! Dopes assumed that it was fraud of some sort.

I set them straight...I just hope that Waterstone's tries to run the charge through again.

Interesting. Something similar happened to me. I had a phone message waiting for me when I got home from work from the fraud division of my CC company. It was the Waterstone's charge they were questioning. I think the charge went through OK but they just wanted to make sure I placed the charge.

Damn, you would think that by now their company would know that if it's a SK item purchased on your account that you absolutely did buy it. There should maybe be memos sent out to all the cc company's employees.

I received an email from Waterstone's today saying the book is shipping.

No similar email confirmation from Hatchard's.

However HATCHARDS PICCADILLY GB is the only one of the two to have charged my credit card thus far.

Go figure.

As I posted earlier, Hatchard's charge went through on my credit card from the UK, no problem. Tonight I got one of those automated calls from my credit card company's fraud department to verify transactions. Waterstone's charge apparently sets off every card's fraud alarm here in the States!

Anyway, the good news is that I'm getting charged by both Hatchard's and Waterstone's so I guess both orders eventually went through. :)

Now I just need to figure out why the Waterstone's charge is a full $30 more than Hatchard's... :orely:

Maybe you selected the AIR shipping option instead of SURFACE?
My email receipt from Waterstone's says: "This order will be shipped using: OVERSEAS COURIER DELIVERY"

Does that mean air? I don't recall it being the most expensive shipping option, but who really pays attention to such details in the heat of the hunt for a brand new limited edition signed by King? Anyway, it is still cheaper than the all-in cost of the S&S UTD S/L (ground shipping) by about nine bucks.

I have no idea how Hatchard's is shipping since that transaction was based on an email exchange and I've never received any kind of invoice or breakdown of the charges.

My sencond copy from Waterstones should be on its way to me, as ive had an e-mail saying its been dispatched. But because i work in the middle of nowhere things usually take a little longer to get to me.

Scratch that, my copy from Waterstones has just arrived. The packaging compared to Hatchards is very poor, there is no bubble wrap and just some flimsy cardboard and i feel lucky that the book is still in mint condition.

Same problem; tried 3 different cards and kept getting the message about a problem verifying the card. Here's what worked for me: In the My Waterstone's Account page there's a Delivery information section where you can add a credit card. I added the card and after that I was able to go through the checkout process with no problems. Hope that helps.

Yeah after years of having to make do with sub-par book-plates and facsimiles finally we have a UK S/L that has had a bit of effort put into it!. Of course it's still not up-to the standards of the smaller publishers but then again it is a fraction of the price so we can't complain.

Oh and finally my order is on it's way, my first S/L!. I bet it'll come this afternoon, sucks that I have to go out all day Christmas shopping.

I hate how Waterstones manage to stick there noses into EVERYTHING to-do with Stephen King over here in the UK. But then I just don't like Waterstones at all so to have their name on an edition just because they sell it is irritating.

It's not just King though, whatever Waterstones wants from Hodder, Waterstones gets. For example a novel earlier this year (Sunnyside by Glen David Gold) was dues to be released exclusively through Waterstones (not good as it would be spectacularly expensive), all other retailers (inc Amazon etc) would be only allowed to sell a paperback version, and not even that for six months!. Well the backlash from independent booksellers and fans of the author caused H&S to back down in the end.

Thankfully it's just H&S on the spine, having a big W on the staring at me every time I looked on the shelf would bug the hell out of me.

I got my UK S/L UTD today that supposedly was sent by "surface mail" but must have been sent air mail instead. Crappy packaging but it seemed to have weathered the storm.

When the book reappeared recently on the Waterstone's website I ordered a second copy and requested the "courier delivery" for that one. That one came yesterday and had a significant bump to the slipcase (no damage to the book or cards). I have an inquiry in to customer support to see what can be done about it.

The high charge for courier delivery was wasted money, IMO, since my copies arrived within one day of each other.

Mine arrived 2 days ago and yes, shameful packing job. My slipcase has a tear inside that must have been caused by someone slamming the book inside.

Received my UK S/L from Waterstone's today and like everyone else said, the packing was terrible. Paying $52 for shipping should get you a little more than just wrapping the book in a layer of cardboard. One corner of the slipcase was dented and that dent carried thru to the book. Not too bad but really no excuse. If your selling/shipping limited edition books you would think they could take a little more care with them expecially when shipping overseas.

I just received the copy that I ordered from Hatchards and unlike the one from Waterstone's it arrived in perfect condition and packed verywell (inside a bag, then very thick bubblewrap, cardboard, and then more cardboard) Waterstone's needs to take a lesson from them for packing. On top of all that the shipping from Hatchards was a 1/3 of the price I paid at Waterstone's. I'm sure they're in numerical order...268, 269....haha...

Actually, if Cloyster got #280 at approx. the same time, then 274 is out there somewhere.

Come on people - take them out of the shrinkwrap! It sticks and can actually hurt the slipcase over time...there's no upside to leaving it on.

At Grant, I saw the damage that old shrinkwrap can do...not good.

I had sent an e-mail to Waterstone's asking about a replacement due to damage in shipping and I received their standard reply..

Thank you for your email.

I have looked into your enquiry and can tell you that you can go into your local waterstones or send back to waterstones online.

Please accept our apologies for any disappointment and inconvenience caused.

They didn't answer any of my questions just gave their standard answer to everything. I responded back right away with the same questions so we will see if they actually read the e-mail this time. Of course my concern is if they have any extras and send a new one will it arrive in any better condition? If I just send my copy back for a refund what happens if there is more damage during the return, will I have to fight with them for a complete refund? There little disclaimer on the return instructions state they "are happy to accept returns ... provided ... they are in pristine condition" Of course it also says to return in the original packaging so there's bound to be more damage.

If you send it back with proof of delivery, and then dispute any problems with your CC company, it will be fine...take some pictures before you send it.

You're going to get your money back, but you probably won't get a replacement. Is is that badly damaged?

My turn My turn

I received my copy from Waterstones today. I am appalled the book has been treated this way from Waterstones. Not just because it's a King signed limited but no book deserves to go through what my copy has. Three corners crushed in on the slipcase. One bad enough the crease goes through the box of cards into the book itself.

The book was loosely wrapped in a piece of cardboard with a flier and return sheet. No bubble package, foam, fluff, or fake COA sheets (it would take several of these but anything would have helped) to protect the book.

 I will start my process for return as well.

My Waterstones books were shipped in a flimsy cardboard package but the books were totally unmarked and free from damage.

The Hatchards ones were wrapped several times in bubblewrap and boxed. Kudos to them, even though its basically the same company as Waterstones.

Must be the US deliverymen causing the damage. :)

Here is my response.....

Dear Waterstone's representative,

I find this solution to be unaccepatble, and would like my complaint elevated to you superior.

I am greatly concerned that the orders I have not received will show up damaged due to your policy of putting zero packing material in the box to protect the merchadise.

I know that your store has received SEVERAL complaints about this specific title arriving damaged. Damage that could have been avoided by putting a few pennies worth of packing material in the box.

I would order an additional copy right now if you can assure me that it will be properly packaged, and that my damaged slipcase will be replaced.

Again, I would like my complaint/concerns elevated to your superior, and I would like someone to contact me today.

Sincerely,

Man, I'm sorry to hear about all the damaged UK S/L's. Mine was packed exactly as Ralph describes above from Waterstone's. It is total luck that the slipcase and book were not severely damaged. I hope they are able to make things right for you guys, but I'm sorry you've got to go through the hassle.

I finally got the standard reply from Waterstone's regarding returning the book for refund or replacement. I am supposed to tell them in a cover letter how much I paid for return shipping. I'm not sure how I will manage that since I usually have a box all closed up with tape prior to taking it for shipping. What a hassle. I wonder how long I will have to wait to see the charges refunded? Oh well, at least they are not arguing about it. I'll give them that.

I was lucky. My copy arrived today from Waterstones, and although I could feel the book shifting around in the thin packing cardboard with no protection, the book and case look undamaged. I have complained numerous times to Amazon for this same shoddy shipping practice, but they don't care either. Sometimes they do shrinkwrap the items and put a few popcorn protectors in for good luck though. When Amazon.com first started, the books I ordered were always well protected and undamaged. But the bigger they got, the worse their service became.

Copy #2 arrived today, and of course is damaged.

Four of the eight corners are dinged (one major and three minor)

The major ding was enough to transfer to the lower spine of the book.

I AM PISSED.

I received both of mine in the mail today, shipped together. The box had been wrapped in cellophane by the postal service because, somewhere along the way, the entire right end of the flimsy cardboard box had ripped off. I could look directly in the box and see my books flopping around in there before I even unpacked it. By some miracle they are both mint. The shrinkwrap has rubbed off the corners, but the cases are unharmed.

CBA Cheaper to ship 500 copies @ (packaging + handling + shipping + cost of goods + gross margin % -returns =) profit margin.
The lower the P&H&S (by which many a retailer makes a great profit), and the higher the GM%, negates cost of a few returns.
BTW, we here are 'Collectors', not the accountants. Talking about a 'bump' to a corporate person is a waste of time, they don't speak the same language!

Cost-benefit analysis is a term that refers both to:

helping to appraise, or assess, the case for a project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project) or proposal, which itself is a process known as project appraisal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_appraisal); and
an informal approach to making decisions of any kind.

Under both definitions the process involves, whether explicitly or implicitly, weighing the total expected costs against the total expected benefits of one or more actions in order to choose the best or most profitable option. The formal process is often referred to as either CBA (Cost-Benefit Analysis) or BCA (Benefit-Cost Analysis).
Benefits and costs are often expressed in money terms, and are adjusted for the time value of money, so that all flows of benefits and flows of project costs over time (which tend to occur at different points in time) are expressed on a common basis in terms of their “present value.” Closely related, but slightly different, formal techniques include cost-effectiveness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost-effectiveness) analysis, economic impact analysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_impact_analysis), fiscal impact analysis and Social Return on Investment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Return_on_Investment) (SROI) analysis. The latter builds upon the logic of cost-benefit analysis, but differs in that it is explicitly designed to inform the practical decision-making of enterprise managers and investors focused on optimising their social and environmental impacts.

Jerome, you are correct.
But one missing factor in the equation is % of non-returning customers.
Not that it affects the final sum greatly, but in these economic times
it never fails to amaze me the lack of concern for a "happy" customer.
Being part of the "service" industry, I see the financial impact of dissatisfied customers every day.
Hell, all they would have had to do was pack better for the overseas customer. The amount of lost postage on returns has to be a significant amount.
But, I'm just bitchin'. Don't mean nothin'. ;)

and i'll be ordering from hatchards from now on too.

are we writing the wrong people? perhaps we should be writing H& S - the publisher -to let them know how badly their editions are being shipped out - maybe they could find a new retailer - or at least put pressure on them to package a bit better.

on the same page... i preordered two UK 1st edition copies through the UK amazon several months ago... and still haven't received them. i wrote amazon and they agreed that they have probably been lost and are sending another shipment.
hope they are 1st editions/1st printings still.

Yes. As I posted earlier they ask for cover letter stating the cost for return shipping. But for me that poses a problem since I usually tape the box shut at home before I leave for the post office. At that point I don't know the exact shipping cost. I guess I'll leave the box unsealed, get the cost at the post office, write it on the cover letter, seal the box and then mail it.

I got this back from Dave at Overlook :

Hey Pam... I can't believe forgot to mention that there IS space for the cards! The cards will sit snuggled within the front of the book pages (opposite the book spine) as you push the book in. This will protect the box of cards and book completely,

At that point I don't know the exact shipping cost. I guess I'll leave the box unsealed, get the cost at the post office, write it on the cover letter, seal the box and then mail it.

I have an unpleasant thought that involves spending two trips through the post office line at the busiest time of the year. Oh well, just one of the downsides of being a fussy collector.

My wife, bless her heart, offered to return the book for me. I told her to be prepared for the worst.....carrying an unsealed package, getting a quote, filling in the cover letter, sealing the box, fighting the crowds, etc. She said OK.

First stop was a local Pack n' Mail. A quote for UPS shipping (Waterstone's recommended recorded delivery) was a whopping $115! This was the cheapest they could offer. She called me and I told her I couldn't in good conscience spend that much expecting Waterstone's to reimburse me. She then went to FedEx. The quote there was about the same (in the $110 to $120 range). She then, as last resort, went to the post office and got some rate with a tracking number for about $46.

I can't believe these rates. They seem so high. Is it that much higher to ship TO the UK than it is to ship FROM the UK to the US? I was about to tell her to forget it and I would just keep the book.

I would be interested to hear of any others' experiences if they decide to return their bumped books to Waterstone's.

Just a couple weeks ago I was trying to ship a copy of UTD to a member here. The lowest I could get it down to with the book and packaging was around $45. Even when I just put the DJ in (which is what he really wanted anyway) the box weighed less then a pound and it still cost $11 to send it. I have no idea how anyone can send anything that weighs much to the UK for less then that. They said if I could get it to under 4lbs it would be $27, well the book almost weights that much.

So Yeh, that sounds about right.

So Yeh, that sounds about right.

Waterstone's shipped my other copy of S/L UTD for 7.98 pounds (about $12 or $13?) and it got here in about 6 days.

The books I have ordered from amazon.uk cost about the same for shipping.

I order books from UK sellers on ABE all the time and it usually costs no more than $20 to $25 for Air Mail shipping (depending on weight, of course).

I just am wondering why it costs us nearly $50 to go the other way? Or over a hundred bucks for UPS and FedEx?

Sorry, 2 copies but no number 274 !!

I like the Overlook's cut-out slipcase for the trade edition.

I guess I get to be the loan man (erm woman) out on this one.

That case just seems a bit over the top for this book. With such great Normal Rockwellesk artwork on the DJ this slipcase just seems a bit comical for the book.

I will wait for The Collector's version I think.

I will too!

Bob, I have sent various packages of differing sizes and weights to a variety of European countries over the past few years. USPS is always significantly cheaper than FedEx or UPS.

The big booksellers are probably getting either some negotiated shipping rate based on volume or they're simply eating some the shipping costs. I don't know.

Rusty, I'm still amazed at the difference in packing jobs considering the one bookseller owns the other. Congrats.

I shipped a S/L UTD S&S version, in a well padded box (5.82 Lbs.)to the UK just this last Saturday. $46.50!

Yes it is a TON to ship to foreign countries-Europe, Canada(!!), etc. The USA stopped shipping item by book rate/surface mail about a year or so ago. That book would/could have been about $20 to ship to the UK but NOW all the USPS doe is by AIR. NO more surface, thus raising havok with book collectors who ship to other countries. It is a hose job, They can now charge WAY more to ship even the lightes stuff overseas. When I ship to Canada, I also have to pay more than to ship stuff to the USA. It is absolutely crazy. We buy Christmas presents every year for friends in Germany and it costs a TON to ship stuff to them because it has to go by air. Really sucks. I get a lot of stuff from Germany and the postage is really small compared to ours. It is a really bad thing the post office went to in my opinion. I complained for weeks after the decision but obviously my voice did not matter. I send a lot of heavy books to Germany and my buddy there gets hosed due to the high postage rates. Stupid system......

I liked it too... I love the two colors ... my only question ( and I'll probably send a note to Overlook about it ) - where do the cards sit? Is there space for them?

I got this back from Dave at Overlook :

Hey Pam... I can't believe forgot to mention that there IS space for the cards! The cards will sit snuggled within the front of the book pages (opposite the book spine) as you push the book in. This will protect the box of cards and book completely,

Thank you , Dave

Regarding shippng to ANY place other than the US... it's a damn racket y'all. I have a book that I have sent to all corners of the world. It weighs less than one pound for the book, but for me to ship it ANYWHERE besides the US I have to send it priority mail. In the US this means about $5, but to ship priority outside the US for small packages means about $13. I don't have to ship in the US via International Priority, but have been told the USPS will not ship packages of any sort outside US borders any manner less expensive. This is for a book that weighs about 5.5 ounces, and they require International Priority shipping. Even for CANADA!!!

I am not a big seller of books and do not do a lot of shipping, overseas or otherwise. It's been at least three years since I sent something overseas. What Mike said makes some sense of this madness. Thanks for all the input.

I am going to order my traycases from The Collector site. Overlook still owes me $75 from a LONG time ago for a defective Richard Matheson book I sent back FROM THEIR INSTRUCTIONS! A lot of letters, calls and e-mails later over, what, 15 years??? resulted in absolutely nothing but empty promises from them that I would get my money back. So, I gave up on them a long time ago.

Not sure if it belongs here or another thread, but I just had to say that this is by far one of the worse readers I've ever heard professionally reading a book.

There are 6 basic character Voices...

Both Rennie's sounds like Percy from the Green Mile
Burpee sounds like Delacroix from the Green mile.
All other men are the reader's normal voice.
All woman sound like 10yo children
All children under 18 sound like 8yo children with a cold.
All children under 10 sound like 3yo children with a cold.

It's kind of annoying.

I have an 8-year old and a 6-year old, so I noticed, and was bothered by, the same thing.

Congrats guys !!!

So I have a question.. I noticed on one of my copies from hatchards that the bottom right hand corner of the spine has snag in it, looks like something hooked it and tore the purple a little, so you can see some gray board underneath. Nothing horrible and it is small maybe 1/8 inch. I emailed Hatchards and they responded right back saying they would replace it or refund me 20% of the purchase price. What do you think is the better option?? Not sure what to do, go through the trouble of returning or take the discount.
