Are you a fan of Cowboy Bebop Gile?

Fall of Gilead

Never seen Cowboy Bebop. :(

I have grown pretty tired of anime. I remember some of the first anime I saw, a long time ago, that I loved:

Lensman
Vampire Hunter D
Robot Carnival

I'm a pretty big Princess Mononoke fan. I enjoyd Trigun, but most new anime I can't watch simply because I am just burned out on it.

fernandito
07-24-2007, 09:06 PM
Trigun is the shit, I think I can easily be considered as an anime essential.

Have you seen (or heard of) the Hellsing Ultimate series?

OchrisO
07-24-2007, 09:29 PM
Yes, but I found out about Hellsing after I was already sick of anime, so I have neve rwatched it.

fernandito

fernandito

Some very good stuff in here.

Here's my favs:

Ninja Scroll (the movie) - This is top notch in my opinion. Everything else pales in comparison

Vampire Hunter D
Akira
Spriggan
Ghost in the Shell (the film)
Spirited Away

fernandito
10-01-2007, 09:17 AM
Storyslinger - I'm liking your choices, Dragon Ball Z and Trigun are both very near and dear to my little heart. <3

Tamez - Bebop is my favorite anime of all time, I've always wanted to dress up for Spike for halloween, I have the physique for it. Unfortunately I lack the savvy on how to even begin to make that costume, so I usually end up dressing up as something else. :(

Mike - I tried, oh Lord how I tried to get into Ghost In The Shell, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Mike Beck
10-01-2007, 09:25 AM
it's not for everyone, i s'pose. :D

oh i forgot cowboy bebop! how could i? excellent choice.

Talking of Dragonball Z - what do those dots on Crillin's head mean? Omi has them on Shaolin Showdown too.

Storyslinger
10-02-2007, 06:41 AM

10-02-2007, 08:01 AM
Never saw it, but I've heard real good things

fernandito
10-02-2007, 08:07 AM
A lot of people have expressed their disliking to it because the animation feels a bit...bleh. However, they remade the series (Hellsing Ultimate) and so far I love the way they've been handling it.

Storyslinger
10-02-2007, 08:09 AM
I'll have to check it out

fernandito

fernandito

I purchased and saw (obviously) Akira the other night. Amazing. The last half hour of that flick is sheer brilliance.

Storyslinger
10-09-2007, 07:04 AM
Definitly one of the best anime movies

fernandito
10-09-2007, 07:54 AM
That it is. I read on the wikipedia site that talks of a real live Akira movie have apparently re-surfaced. One can only hope.... :)

Mike Beck
10-09-2007, 09:44 AM
what if they shit it up, though? some things can only be portrayed in the animation format. of course, i don't care. i'll buy a ticket to it, anyhow. :D

has anyone here seen Paprika? I started watching it the other day. it's really amazing. cool premise. but i won't get into all that now.

al'Lan Mandragoran
10-09-2007, 10:21 AM
I can't believe no one has mentioned Neon Genesis Evangelion yet. Well, besides that I love Tenchi, Princess Mononoke, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, certain Inuyasha episodes, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, NGE of course, and Ghost in the Shell. Also Big O... that wasn't too bad if you knew what was going on. Haven't seen Akira yet, though by the sound of it, it'll be great. Oh, and Mobile Suit Gundam is another favorite. Can't believe I forgot that one.

fernandito

10-10-2007, 10:12 AM
I remember the different Dragon Ball series... I used to watch them with my grandfather. A movie eh... a certain friend of mine is going to have a stroke. Hes a major DB nerd. But I can't blame him.

fernandito

Diani_of_gilead
10-10-2007, 12:52 PM
I'm looking to watch in on the computer, like on sidereel.com. It is about some girl that is taken to another world, along with 2 friends. And she starts discovering she is not a simple human being.

fernandito
10-10-2007, 12:54 PM
Hmm, I'm not big on downloading shows, however I have heard that Bit Torrents is an excellent program with which to d/l shows from. You could also try to look up individual volumens on youtube.

Hence the AV? Yeah, I would love to see it too, although I keep wondering what Goku's hair would look like. :P

Storyslinger
10-12-2007, 08:16 AM
Yeah, all their hair, except young Gohan and Trunks, the bowl cut and all, lets just say, lots of hair gel

and on that topic, you'd think the same would've happen with clouds hair, but i think they did a great job with it in Advent Children

fernandito
10-12-2007, 08:20 AM
I think Cloud used Head & Shoulders :)

While we're on that topic, doesn't Sephiroth's voice in AV sound a lot like Christian Bales?

I know this might not exactly by anime but has anyone seen a Japanese cartoon from 1981(?) dubbed in English called "The Water Prince and the Fire Child" or "The Legend of Sirius?" My wife was talking about it today as being a favorite of hers as a child, so I was curious if any of you has seen it.

What's Cowboy Bebop about?

fernandito
05-01-2008, 04:18 PM
Cowboy Bebop (カウボーイビバップ, Kaubōi Bibappu?) is a Japanese animated television series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and written by Keiko Nobumoto. It consists of 26 episodes (called "sessions") produced by Sunrise, and follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop, in the year 2071.

Cowboy Bebop has been strongly influenced by American music, especially the jazz movements of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and the early rock era of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Many of its action sequences, from space battles to hand-to-hand martial arts combat, are set and timed to music. Episodes are called Sessions (perhaps in reference to musicians playing a "jam session"), and titles are often borrowed from album or song names (such as Sympathy for the Devil or My Funny Valentine), or make use of a genre name ("Mushroom Samba") indicating the episode's musical theme.

Gurren Lagann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurren_lagann) is awesome. It's by Gainax, the people who brought you the wildly different Evangelion and FLCL.

I hear ya... the state of the industry is not so good right now. Everybody in this thread should try to be boosting sales if they can; American purchase of anime has gone down 40% since 2003.

Ka-mai
06-30-2008, 03:13 PM
That's because Singapore and Hong Kong produce it for a fraction of the price. If American distributors didn't charge $30 for a disc with three episodes on it, they might actually sell something.

Seriously though, that's not that hard to figure out. Retards. They deserve what they get.

Yunsung
07-01-2008, 10:24 PM
That's because Singapore and Hong Kong produce it for a fraction of the price.

Yes. In bootleg form, which is the problem. I like cheap anime, but I don't really like the idea of what the people who sell bootlegs will use my money for.

Essentially, it boils down to this: if you want to move a lot of stuff out of the less developed Asian countries, you're dealing with one group; that is, the Triads. Who do stuff like human trafficking, which I'm not really down with. I want to only pay $20 for a season of Haruhi, but not if it's going to support people who are involved in buying and selling young children into the sex-worker industry.

If American distributors didn't charge $30 for a disc with three episodes on it, they might actually sell something.

And aside from the now thankfully deceased Bandai Visual, most American companies are pretty much at the mercy of the Japanese companies. In Japan, it's apparently not unusual to pay the equivalent of $80 for a disc - so claims a friend of mine who just spent a semester over there.

So the Japanese are overestimating the value of their product, which is unfortunate for everyone. I would like to try out everything that interests me - but it's just too expensive on anyone's budget.

Seriously though, that's not that hard to figure out. Retards. They deserve what they get.

Unfortunately, what they get is less business and less money, and then things start to happen very quickly - like Geneon shutting down. And then people like Feev can't get the rest of Hellsing Ultimate because the company isn't around to sell it anymore.

It's a broken system, but unless the people in a position to make changes start to re-examine it (fat chance), it's a system that will only get worse over time.

Ka-mai
07-02-2008, 03:02 PM
Well I don't condone bootleg copies, they actually freaked me out before you said all that stuff about human trafficking, I bought my bootleg Hellsing before I knew how to tell the difference between bootleg and legit DVDs. I'm just saying that especially with our economy going down the shitter, people are going to make the obvious choice.

For me, the obvious choice was watching my ex-boyfriend's pirated material. :P I don't watch much anymore unless it's something I bought secondhand, though. Just too much money and too many freaks at the conventions. :ninja:

Yunsung
07-02-2008, 06:39 PM
Bootlegs are just not appealing to me. Even setting aside the moral issues, a lot of times they just aren't up to snuff as far as quality of the picture/subtitles/sound goes. And who wants to get ripped for $30 only to find that the show they bought has a thin whine audible over all the dialogue or the art is all pixelated? It's happened to me before, when I used to go bootleg, not knowing better.

So, yeah, like you say - pirated material is pretty much our last hope. I don't wanna, but for a lot of this stuff, it's the only affordable option. However, I do try to not make myself a hypocrite when I talk about the whole industry/piracy thing.

For example, I downloaded all of Death Note in fansub form. Great quality, easily 720p. But, I'm now buying the official release whenever I can spare the money - and my cash availability is such that by the time I've got about $20 that's not budgeted toward something else, the latest volume has generally been out long enough to drop in price a little.

Cheaper, legit anime. The only problem is that it takes forever for my ownership to become legit.

But, what can you do?

As far as cons go, I've always wanted to go to a convention. But I'm fairly sure I'd be so horrified by the flocking (bad) cosplayers, the "will yaoi/yuri for $," the people who think Dragon Ball Z/Naruto/Bleach was the first/best anime ever, and so on that I would begin hitting people hard in the face and never stop.

My favorite parts about the convention I went to (Katsucon 2007) was the rave at night. Also, there were some hot guys there, but for the most part it was full of fat, smelly losers or people who were way too old to be there, especially in costume. Most girls just use the cosplay as an excuse to be complete whores.

I do have to say, the best t-shirt I ever saw was (FMA spoiler)
The Philosopher's Stone is people!
I almost bought one, but I realized that nobody would get it.

When I was a kid, the DBZ animation always creeped me out. I'm not sure why.

I liked Bleach a lot better before every friggin character had super-amazing powers. About the time that
that chick's barrettes came to life to protect her
is when I completely lost interest in the series. That was just too ridiculous for me.

I also liked Naruto except for the repetitive "everyone has a sob story and must reveal it in the middle of a battle while everyone listens patiently" bit. But I see that in a lot of anime. Also, Naruto's lectures about doing your best, etc. got really old. And the English translation is just hideous.

The Fall of Manga and Anime
Chobot looks at the fractures in the industry, and how they're affecting her enthusiasm for its products.
by Jessica Chobot

June 12, 2008 - It's time to say the thing that Japanophiles and otaku aren't supposed to say: I am bored to tears with manga and anime here in the US of A.

After one of our contributors posted about the apparent decline of TokyoPop earlier this month, it got me thinking more and more about my increasingly dismissive attitude towards what was previously one of my more passionate hobbies.

For any anime/manga aficionado whose paying even a small amount of attention, it is obvious that TokyoPop isn't the only one struggling. Geneon has been essentially dissolved. ADV has been oddly silent of late which could be good or bad, but judging how some of their fellow competitors are faring, chances are it's the latter. In fact, the only two publishers seem to have found some stability and success: Viz, with their massively popular shojo/shonen titles, and Funimation, with the never-ending Dragon Ball Z and One Piece franchises alongside some quality live-action movies.

While it is all fair and good to try and piece together what's happening within the manga and anime trade by reading between the lines of press releases and rumor mongering, it still seems somewhat disconnected from what made manga and anime flourish here in the states in the first place: The fans.

As Ramsey stated in his article, the current state of the economy, the cost of books and DVDs, file-sharing, the "gray" legal area that fan-subs fall into, etc… all of these things have had an impact on sales. Yet the problem is a little bit more complex than unfortunate fans with empty pockets and questionable legality issues.

From a collector's standpoint (that collector being "moi"), there's a slight stink of "get rich quick" scheming that has sullied the US manga/anime market. The over-saturation of mediocre product for the sake of having full bookstore shelves is one of the more obvious problems. For every Death Note that is imported and translated for English audiences, there are ten other titles that, for lack of a better phrase, are complete and utter crap.

Various distribution companies, having caught on to the fact that girls were spending their hard-earned dollars on shojo titles, instantly bombarded stores with pile after pile of any and all romantically-inclined manga in the hopes of cashing in on the craze. Companies that should have never attempted to delve into the unfamiliar waters of shojo comics (Harlequin Romance's release, in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics, of the Harlequin Pink line) tried to get their greedy hands on a piece of the action.

This demonstration of blatant disregard for the taste and intelligence of their targeted readership is, at its best, foolish, and at its worse, insulting.

The problem doesn't just begin and end with "girl" manga/anime either. Many of the themes found in various manga, whether shojo, shonen, comedy or others, come off as stale and unimaginative. Fans have been inundated with the same plot lines, same dialogue, same character backgrounds and same art style. While the argument of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," can be made, the counter notion of, "too much, too soon," also holds a certain amount of relevance.

Another slightly questionable and very controversial practice from the hard-core fan POV has been TokyoPop's aggressive push of OEL (Original English Language) manga. While the argument over whether or not OEL manga is or is not "legitimate" manga can be argued back and forth forever as a personal taste issue, things get a little more sticky when one references the 2005 article by Publisher Weekly. In the article, Viz publicity director, Evelyn Dubocq is quoted as suggesting that companies are only pushing original authors because, "they are struggling to find licensed content. Manga are Japanese in origin." Her statement is backed up when, in the same article, James Killen (a graphic novels buyer for Barnes & Noble) states that the Japanese licensed titles outsell the OEL titles. While TokyoPop rallied back with some very strong points in favor of OELs, given TokyoPop's current press release and supposed state of affairs it looks as if Viz may have sunk 'Pop's battleship in this debate.

With the constant and ever increasing influx of manga and anime, a certain mystique has long been missing from "the hobby." No more are the days when anime and manga had to be special ordered from some independent Asian imports shop. No more trolling through the basements of various neighborhoods comic stores for that old VHS of Ranma ˝. Similar to the current videogame market, the argument that in exchange for ease of acquirement and inclusion of both "hardcore" and "casual" fans, companies are shooting for the lowest common denominator: A "jack of all trades but master of none" attitude where everyone gets a little bit of something, but none of it is very good.

Before the Wachowski brothers pillaged Speed Racer. Before Adult Swim broadcast decently English-dubbed animes featuring short blonde boys who know alchemy. Even before Ghost in the Shell was released on the big screen to select art-house audiences. Hell, before I was even in college, you knew the manga you were reading or the anime you were buying was assured to be of high quality. The shows or books would be in-depth and pushing the boundaries of anything you had ever seen before because if the companies in Japan felt that the title was worthy enough to sub-title and release it in the States then there must be something there.

Now, with most Western publishing companies pushing every license they can get their hands on, companies that shouldn't be in the game are attempting to stick their foot in the door for no good reason whatsoever. Other companies are trying to fill a void or establish new "genres" of manga/anime in order to keep milking their cash-cow. Simply put, US buyers and fans have become overwhelmed with a watered-down product.

As terrible as this may sound, I'm a little glad to see some of these companies shrinking their numbers and cutting back on production. I'd like to see the manga/anime/otaku lifestyle come full circle and resemble its former golden glory days once more.

It's all about quality over quantity, people. Remember that.

FMA is fine. I liked it enough to buy it all legit and legal at its outrageous price of $20 a disc. But I don't like the constant (unfunny) short jokes. I do like the action, the weird twist at the end, and the animation.

I checked out a few episodes of FMA at Yun's request, and from what I saw - the show is pretty bad ass. :D

The first season was released in a box set format - might have to get pick that up:dance:

I've never been huge on FMA although the song was sung by l'Arc~en~ciel, which is my favourite jpop band (and the song's pretty good too!).
I loved Wolf's rain though; watched it all on youtube (subbed only) and started Death Note coz I'd liked the manga so much (it had been a while since anything had made me go to bed by 6 in the morning because I was too tired to go on... guess that was DTVII) and have to admit the dubbed version is pretty good too (the american version, I mean).
Lately I've watched Junjou romantica, which is brilliant, and I'm so hoping they'll make another series. It's a BL anime, so if you're not into boy's love, you'd better not watch it!
Is there an equivalent for this thread but for the paper version of the manga? (I couldn't find any such thing yet)

Don't know about whether the anime's worth it. I've been told they stopped it before they got the end of the story, so I guess it pretty much sucks. The manga's awesome, though! Go on and tell me how you felt, please :)

The manga's great. The story is quite easy to follow (I read the first 15 volumes I think) but after some time, it became a bit like most "adults only" mangas (if you see what I mean ;) ) so I stopped reading it a while ago. I've been told the anime is not very well drawn. Is that true ?

For me, Full Metal Alchemist seems to have a pretty tight plot so far. I've only read up to the fifth volume of the manga, but I do find it enjoyable. I like the kind of steampunkish early-European setting. And Mustang can be hilarious at times.

Bleach really surprised me. I've read the first two volumes, but its got me interested in maybe reading more. The reason I say it surprised me is because I picked it up after hearing a lot of talk about the series. The last manga I picked up based on hype--Naruto--just wasn't my cup of tea.

As for Berserk, I haven't been able to find it in my area so I'm going to order some volumes for Christmas from Amazon. I did get to peek into Volume 2 on Amazon and wow...it was excessive to say the least. Moreso than the first volume. I mean there we had guys getting split in two, decapitations, and severed heads being crushed with bare hands, and demon sex. But in Volume 2 That gaoler ate the little robed fella's kid whole!

In some ways, Guts kind of reminds me of Roland, as he is in The Gunslinger.

Also, it seems Cartoon Network has nixed Toonami. I remember when they played the good stuff on there--Dragon Ball Z/Dragon Ball, Zoids, Yu-Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, and even ReBoot (I think this was Western animation though, not sure).

i love it because it's just so emotional. i also love how people integrate the science of alchemy and belief in souls. it just gets you so involved with the characters, of course the brothers Elric in their quest, but also the supporting characters. no anime has ever made get so into the story. it's a family-love story... a story of mistakes, retribution and reconciliation... *swoon*
some people find it hard to get thru the first couple of episode and give up. i was hooked from the beginning but that happened with Nigel. he stuck with it and he loves it. we're watching the whole series again as it comes thru Netflix.

The Dead Space anime is f'n brutal! I can't believe the creators got away with showing that much gore! People getting their lower jaw sliced off, their heads ripped from their bodies, their guts split open and devoured. If it was a movie, it would have been rated NC-17 for sure

Akira(Required.)
Cowboy Bebop(Also required.:P)
Ninja Scroll
Anything Satoshi Kon(Paranoia Agent:wub:, Paprika, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers)
Hellsing(anime and manga)
Priest(manga)

I'm sure I'll come up with more eventually.

For me it's a toss up between Goku and Piccolo. Goku for his excellent fighting abilities and determination, and Piccolo because he's by far the most interesting character. To me at least.
