Perhaps mermaids play this touching game, ‘Neath waves not as grand as an ocean?
Or a look at the label of you sweater’s manufacturer, if you happen to have such a notion?
Four actors working in a line of endless combination,
Defining life in every clime and every known location.

What am I?

I was thinking the four seasons, sea-something for the mermaid clue, and nothing at all for sweater http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_sad.gif

touching game = tag?
waves not grand as an ocean = sea?
Or a look at the label of you sweater’s manufacturer = tag see?

Tag and sea are the correct answers to the first line and as the final answer (in a sense)...but in another, deeper sense. :orely:

All I can think of are "taxi" ("tag sea") and seasons (for the last line)....

But I can't think beyond this....

Although taxi is a good guess, it is not correct.
With the clues Tag and Sea, read the rest of the riddle...and think discretely.
The last line doesn't refer to the 4 Seasons...but refers to all life, in general.

Thanks! :D

I just thought, "Okay, what does ALL life in general have in common?" "All" life made me think of bacteria as well as multi-celled life (I have a background in biology), so then I looked at the "four actors working in a line of endless combination," and it hit me--DNA!

Then I realized that the nucleic acids themselves were in the answers you gave already:

"Tag" is spelled "T-A-G" (Tyrosine, adenine, guanine), and "sea" sounds like the letter "C" (cytosine).

That was a great riddle, and I'm so glad I got it! :D
