Yep Karen, Michael and Audrey are out in LA...then off to Arizona then New Mexico. They will be back on the 17th; I'm holding down the fort. I guess that means PARTY here! I'm selling all art at a special discount, come one, come all. :)

Will drop an Oy for you when I see Michael.

Thanks Bob (it is Bob, right???)

And Patrick, I didn't see yours, but I didn't look at all of them.

Out of curiosity I looked for the definition of Remarque due to the discussion about Doodles & Remarques. Here's what I found.

http://www.ask.com/bar?q=Remarque+proof&page=1&qsrc=167&zoom=Erich+Maria+%3CKW%3ERemarque%3C%2FKW%3E+Biogr aphy%7CDefine+%3CKW%3ERemarque%3C%2FKW%3E%7CWhat+I s+a+%3CKW%3ERemarque%3C%2FKW%3E+Print&ab=5&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goettner.com%2Fglossary.htm

That is the point I have been trying to get across. Remarque is a term for lithographs. I am still not sure how it has come to be used for every little drawing someone does in a book. Oh well.

Where will they be in New Mexico? I remember Audrey telling me they were maybe doing some work with a gallery in Santa Fe, if its Sante Fe can you say what gallery and when? Dave

I'd also like to know the New Mexico itinerary. It's possible I could drive over to Albuquerque or Santa Fe. I'd love to meet them in person.

I've been looking all am as I was emailed by a couple of people who were not happy with my term "Remarque" which caused me to revise my listing several times:cry: & the definition is still the same. It is also what caused me to come here & post as it seems my LSOE & others were a hot topic according to another couple of other sources Oh well, I only went with "Remarque" because that's how every one else describes theirs & I'm not revising my listing again. Here's yet another definition & that's the end of it for me;

A definition is whatever something is commonly defined as.

Since on TDT a remarque has come to define any drawing in a book by the artist, then that's what a remarque is, here anyway.

Unfortunately, there is no real set itinerary. Their daughter was getting her doctorate from CalTech, then they were going to visits friends in Tucson and go to the Gem and Mineral show. From there over to the Chiricahua's then to visit friends in Albuquerque, maybe Los Alamos and White Sands, Santa Fe and home.

Even with that many AE's, the actual percentage of remarques is SO small. Shows how hard it is...sux...I was rooting for you...but your 'relationship' should lead to future opportunites, so...

I have to say I'm glad I'm not really an artisit collector...it will make the disappointment slightly easier to take...

Generally, for U.S.P.S, you only need as signature if it is sent Express Mail (overnight), or if the sender purchases Signature Confirmation.

Robert and the gang really did a great job packing the box. They re-inforced the sides and the top and bottom with double-wall cardboard.

 Well said. I always thought President's Day was a stat holiday for you guys though. In Ontario we had the less important sounding "Family Day" today. Although the government was hasty in implementing it (only campaign promise they kept) and very few companies were able to properly budget for it, and any unionized workplaces have old contracts that don't include it. So about 50% of us still had to work.

Juliana, hmmmm, yours should have been charged and shipped already...I can't find your order for two artists. When did you send it in?

I ordered the day after the 1st announcement. Maybe around mid Nov?. I could just reorder. Let me know. Thanks for checking, Karen.

Is the "CK Sigul" the eye?

That, or any drawing, is uncommon in an s/l...nice!

I was wondering the same as Boome...how many are left? I wonder if whoever was doing the numbering was subconciously putting higher numbers on those editions with a remarque? I only say that because so many of us here have numbers below 1,250...and Karen's was #2121...

But, a sample of ONE confirmed remarque is NOT much of a sample! haha...

Unfortunately, it's fair to say it may be years before all the remarques are even bought and shipped...

No nothing in #2438 just the eye in my S/L.

I know Grant mentioned the remarques on the website but I remember specifically looking for a mention of the remarques on the color flyers they sent out and there was no mention, if that was so I can imagine lots of buyers ordering because they received the flyer and not knowing about the remarques.

Is my memory of the flyer wrong was there a mention of remarques?

Karen,
The Artist Edition copies come with a descriptive flyer loose under the shrinkwrap that has the number of the book written on it. I had planned to keep this with the book but was wondering if these were printed on acid free paper. In other words, is there any potential harm to long term storing of this flyer inside the book?

Maybe 100 AEs?, is so tiny that we're not even denting the percentage...I keep waiting, but Karen's #2121 might be the only one we see for a looong time...but it's good though; it would be no fun if they all showed up...

Maybe a Grant customer who doesn't post here will open one, see it and wonder what it is, contact Karen to ask about it, and she can direct them here...so maybe we'll see them eventually...

I took my AE out of it slipcase and found it a bit snug.
The slipcase had left indention's on the dust jacket itself.
Anyone else notice this on theirs?
No remarque either sorry to say.

Yeah...that is the problem with slipcases...they tend to rub the book and DJ when going in and out.

My copy of The Gunslinger (1982 1st ed) had a mint (and I mean brand new...perfect) DJ on it, and after a few times in and out of the Grant DT123 slipcase, I noticed a small chip in the DJ. :(

I was able to get a Brodart protector on my LSOE...maybe you can too.

I'm going to save up a little and get a couple more chocolate bars, oop's I mean AE editions to see if a Golden Ticket is inside.

It's a good day in Virginia.

Great minds think alike.:P

It is easy to look backwards and say what should/could have been done.
Upon reflection, DMG probably shouldn't have produced 4,000 AE's-given this economy.
I would have priced 2,000 books at original cost, and designated a "pool" of 1,000 books which would contain the ~40 books with art. These pool books would have been priced at ~50% more than the other 2,000 books, and whether they had an original piece or not the numbering would have had the added note of "Art Lottery", or something more elegant, perhaps all 1,000 had a "sigul" eye by Whelan. Nonetheless, making them different than the other 2,000. Collectors would have snapped up the 1,000 books-there would certainly be more than one person here with a remarqued book, AND most Collectors would have bought an additional book from the 2,000 pool as they would qualify as a different version.

Patrick

That's a fun theoretical exercise, but I'm quite happy with the process as it stands. Completely random and hidden that so every book has the exact same chance. I like that not even the people at Grant know which are the "enhanced" books.

I only wish Mr. Whelan had taken a quick photo of each of the sketchydoodles (aside from the simple KA and CK doodles).

I think Michael may have scans of all the remarques David. I've been lobbying to put together a chapbook of all the remarques for the DT books he's done. I sometimes like them more than the actual artwork in the book. Nothing against the artwork, but sometimes the simpler, spontaneous drawings appeal to me more. I collect original animation drawings over painted cells from Disney movies since I prefer the original pencil intent by the artist over the finished product.

Well considering this book was supposed to be issued a few years back, at that time it seemed reasonable for 4,000 books. If you guys think about it 3 years ago books were selling at top dollar (not just King), now they are selling for about 40% less, and people still have trouble selling the books.

The one thing I like about the drop in prices for collectible books is a lot of people thought the value of books in the late 90's and 2000's were way overpriced. It's nice to see them come down to a reasonable level.

According to wiz- (David), Michael Whelan said he only did intricate artwork on ~40 of the signature pages of books for the 1/4,000 artist editions-none for the King signed 1/1,250 books.

Correct. No remarques on the S/L's, only the AE's. There are very few 'Ka' or 'Eye' symbols in the S/L's; Michael guessed maybe half dozen. He was a little shocked when I told him I received a 'Ka' in both my S/L and AE.

I'm a bit miffed by this Publisher's service.

I ordered a single Artist copy on November 15, 2008.

I could understand the miff if it were sure that there were not problems. It seems a few have had some and all that I have seen who asked usually got an answer. I was under the understanding they did not start shipping until Jan.09 so all the time before that was known. I am only 2 weeks in since confirmation so I can't complain. Maybe ask Karen. If you have already then you have my sympathy. I would go nuts if it took that long for me.

Karen,
I am 'upset' because Grant Books has not fulfilled their part of our contract. They took my order and my money a long time ago and I have not had anything for it.

It was only a single artist copy!

I have not "kicked up a fuss" with Grant over this because of respect to your membership of this website. Believe me, if you were not on here, I would have sent Grant my displeasure directly before now.
