I am adding a chat feature to the boards today called "flashchat". It should make it easier for people to come together in there and also it will fully integrate with this wonderful skin we have.

Anyway, I am hoping to maybe throw together a little party today, tonight, tomorrow--I'll be in there the whole time...so people can test it.

The DarkTower.com now has its very own IM board. The program is called "flashchat" and is totally contained here on our server.

How to:

Click the link called "Chat (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/misc.php?do=flashchat)" in the black toolbar above. Far right.

A new window will open and launch the chat. You are automatically signed in under your site user name--no extra steps.

When you get there, you will see this:

You have a few things you can do. The "options" button is circled and you may choose your own background and text color. These are individual choices so go nuts but I would suggest using a neutral text color that people should mostly be able to see (white or close to it)

Enter in text in the large box at the bottom and choose from one of the huge array of smilies if you like. Then hit enter on your keyboard or click the "send" button

You are chatting!!

There are also options under your profile if you click on your name so poke around a bit and see what you can do.

This chat is only available to registered members of tdt.com.

When we started chatting, if I went back and refreshed the main page we both showed up. Maybe if they are idle too long it wipes them off the list? I don't know.

Couple of reasons it works for us is that we don't get anyone just trolling the IRC for people to screw with

and also the IRC networks are largely blocked from work but people can still use the flashchat here locally in most cases.

That being said, I'm not overly impressed with it so we may be doing something else soon.

Yep, there is a java appelet that will allow us to use the mIRC on this server and it may be useful at some point.

The thing is a bit glitchy but I believe it sometimes doesn't realize a person left depending on how they close the window.
