You guys may have noticed that I figured out how to change this.

I am not going to do a poll because I want the best layout for the site possible but what do you guys think?

Left. I like left better than top. It streamlines it for me.

Daghain
07-06-2007, 12:07 PM
Definitely left. And WTF is up with the black borders? I'd kill that. :)

Matt
07-06-2007, 12:09 PM
Black borders?!?!

Maybe its an IE thing.

**goes to look**

Daghain
07-06-2007, 12:10 PM
I hope so, it's fucking annoying. :( Everything has a black box around it. Ugly.

Matt
07-06-2007, 12:10 PM
Ick--that isn't very pretty.

Were those there before I changed it?

I use firefox almost exclusively and they are not there.

Sorry about the annoyance, I am working on it. :D

Daghain
07-06-2007, 12:13 PM
Yeah, it's really bad. Distracting. They never were there before. And what is that scan link under the avatar? I clicked on it and it goes nowhere. LOL.

Matt
07-06-2007, 12:26 PM
Its supposed to link to the user profile. "scan" meaning "to see in full". :D

I may have to switch it back because of the lines though, not sure how to fix that yet.

I like the avatars on the left side.

I don't like the black boxes around everything.

Daghain
07-06-2007, 12:33 PM
Of course Internet Exploder would have to make everything as ugly as possible. :)

Work computer - what can you do?

Matt
07-06-2007, 12:42 PM
Back to the old one for now, its a nice feature but not worth the trouble. :D

Daghain

Ahh, much easier on the eyes. Thanks. :)

Matt
07-06-2007, 01:07 PM
Okay, how are we doing now

I set the border to 0

Daghain
07-06-2007, 01:11 PM
Excellent!

Matt
07-06-2007, 01:13 PM
:huglove:

I am still just testing it but the more I see, the more I like.

Daghain
07-06-2007, 01:15 PM
The funny thing is I was going to ask you if you could adjust the width of the lines LOL.

Matt
07-06-2007, 01:18 PM
And the stupid scan thing is gone now too :nana:

Daghain
07-06-2007, 01:21 PM
Yay!

Jean

this is absolutely great!

as I mentioned before regarding arcade games, I am pathetic in anything visual, so I didn't even realize what happened, only thought to myself that the boards felt somewhat nicer and read in a lot more convenient way this morning. Ony finding this thread I understood what actually happened. Thank you Matt, I wish it would stay this way!

Randall Flagg

I am still getting the black side border.

Jean
07-06-2007, 10:00 PM
now that you mentioned it, I noticed it, too.

Randall Flagg

Please go back to the top.
Members names were larger (size does matter) and no black side border.
PLEASE.

Jean
07-06-2007, 10:21 PM
maybe it's possible to have large names with no border, and left-side avatar layout????

Randall Flagg
07-07-2007, 03:10 AM
If it can be done, Matt can do it.

Matt
07-07-2007, 05:17 AM
I made the member names smaller because of all_hail_the_crimson_king

his very long name stretched out the box.

We are just testing for now you guys, its easy to put back and I may end up doing just that if it doesn't work.

Edit--I just looked in IE, could you guys post a screen shot of the left side border you are talking about, I must have missed it.

I made the member names smaller because of all_hail_the_crimson_king

his very long name stretched out the box.

Just make an executive decision and shorten his s/n to CSH.
Anyway, was weird loggin' in, with the new look, made me feel weird for a sec, as I was so used to how it looked. I am used to having AVs on the left though, so I'll adjust quickly. Not sure which I like better though. :orely:

Matt
07-07-2007, 06:33 AM
I'm kind of the same.

At first, the av's on top were really hard to get used to but when I did, it was pretty cool.

I am really on the fence on how it should be. I looked at all_hail on dt.net (wondering how it was handled there) and his posts just off set

Meanning that area is bigger on his only. It messes with the symmetry of the page but not that much.

Not sure which way to go to tell you the truth, but its fun to learn new stuff about the board.

The black side(s) are really the same as before-to me. I went and looked at screen shots in my how to thread about hosting pictures and it looks the same.
Perhaps just the change just made me think it was different.
As for the long screen names, is there in fact a character limit? If not, at some point, someone will try something with 100+ words on it.

Matt
07-07-2007, 06:55 AM
Ah--I'm glad problem solved on the black line, wasn't sure what I was going to do there

I am sure there is a default limit, I'll have to check that out.

Matt
07-07-2007, 07:21 AM
Its 25.

His is right on the dot for max length.

Daghain
07-07-2007, 01:09 PM
Typical of CK, push it to the limit. :)

Frunobulax

I do enjoy this format much more than the top avatar.

BlakeMP

I much prefer the left-side avs. Just think it looks nicer.

ZoNeSeeK

Left is great.

Anything right is just retarded :)

I liked it the way it was before. I liked it because it was different from other sites. I'll live, I guess.

Matt
07-09-2007, 04:14 AM
Hmmm, that is the only "no" so far.

Jean
07-09-2007, 04:32 AM
how about adding a poll?

Ruki
07-09-2007, 04:39 AM
i liked the way it looked before a lot more, but this way is more convenient & takes up less space on the screen so i suppose i have to admit it's better.

Matt
07-09-2007, 06:02 AM
how about adding a poll?

I considered a poll but I wanted to leave it open for interpretation. :D

Randall Flagg
07-09-2007, 06:03 AM
I actually liked it the other way, but mostly because of the larger size screen names.
However, on a how much do care 1-10 scale I only give the issue a 2.

ManOfWesternesse
07-09-2007, 06:30 AM
This is much better - leave them Left!

Odetta
07-09-2007, 06:13 PM
I liked when our names were bigger, and I liked no black sides either.

I also liked when I was 21, and when I could fit into a size 3 pant... *sigh*

Matt
07-09-2007, 06:48 PM
I think the black sides have always been there.

Daghain
07-09-2007, 06:55 PM
Yeah the black sides with the little design in them? Always there.

I was objecting to the black borders around each post, which Matt has kindly removed. :)

I do think I liked the names bigger, though, but really I'm with Randall - on a scale of 1-10 it's maybe a 3 on a good day. :)

Odetta
07-09-2007, 07:12 PM
I think the black sides have always been there.

maybe I'm just bitchy today then. ;)

sarajean
07-11-2007, 02:06 PM
the black sides have always been there. when i don't have my screen maximized, i have to scroll to read an entire post, but i've kind of gotten used to that. is text wrapping not possible?

i like the left. it's more streamlined.

Matt
07-11-2007, 02:45 PM
The minimized screen is a windows thing and totally common across the board.

Any page in a reduced window will cause scroll bars. :couple:

sarajean
07-11-2007, 03:04 PM
actually, most other sites that i frequent have a text wrapping option so that the horizontal scroll is not necessary.

Matt
07-11-2007, 04:32 PM
Ah, okay.

I will check into it SJ. Not sure what I can do about that since the nature of windows is to allow a scalable screen that can be used in cascading programs, for multi use.

If you have it on the "restore down" option (middle in the buttons on the upper right of all windows programs) maybe you could pull it out enough on the corner to make the scroll bars unnecessary. They should just disappear.

(its just a box when its on the "restore down" option that says maximize when you mouse over it)

Or I may be confused on what we are talking about.

could you maybe screen shot me an example of what you mean?

sarajean
07-11-2007, 04:55 PM
i just sent you a pm about what i'm trying to get across.

Matt
07-11-2007, 06:01 PM
Okay, I think I see what you mean, but I believe the site is doing it. I took screen shots from IE for this.

Look at the end of the sentence in this pic

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5954/oneshotvg4.jpg

Then I brought it down for this one and it wrapped

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/6010/twoshotnj7.jpg

once you get to the brown boarder it begins to create the scroll bar because you would have to to continue to see the banner and link buttons at the top. The text will continue to wrap all the way down as far as I can tell

I prefer left.
