View Full Version : How To: Member Photo Gallery

07-02-2007, 09:24 AM
All of your images can be hosted right here on TheDarkTower.com

The Gallery itself uses a seperate SQL database on our server which allows us a variety of different options in using it. TheDarkTower.com has a vast amount of memory and unlimited bandwidth.

Your photos are of utmost importance to us and the

What follows is a tutorial on how to use the Gallery:

Click on the link to "Gallery (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/index.php)" in the tool bar.

From here you have two options:

Upload your photo to your very own member Gallery. You have several options on how to do this.

You may simply upload to there--the database will manage your images under your personal gallery.
You can also create albums to subdivide your photos in your personal gallery.
From there, you can copy the image location to copy into any forum (including ours), you may also email the link to others.
Only registered users can see the member galleries
You may also upload your photo to the Special Catgories Gallery if it fits into one of those subjects (to be developed). Special Categories can be viewed by guests.
You may also create a Private Member Album. This will not be viewable to anyone except those people who you give the URL and password to.
This is simply for the more private folks on the site, not for risque pics
**TheDarkTower.com is not responsible for your password, cannot change it nor track who can see your personal album. We cannot be held responsible for who has it or doesn't, that is your total responsibility if you want to use the Private Albums feature**Choose the "upload photo" option on the upper right hand corner of the screen

Please post your questions here--the idea is to make it easier for all of us to share our lives through cool SK and personally related photos.

We can also leave comments for one an other on how much we love the photos.

Choose where you would like the photo to be stored, the title and description, then choose upload. You now have the option to copy its location and use it on forums or elsewhere through the use of the IMG button at the top of this reply box.

You're really crazy about this member photo thing aren't you?

07-02-2007, 09:26 AM
I like to make sure people have instructions on it, I love seeing photos of folks. :D

07-04-2007, 12:20 PM
Photos can make us feel even closer.
Cool. :D

07-05-2007, 06:46 AM
Its a really cool thing and I am hoping people will go out and establish a spot for their photos.

I check for new ones out there everyday. :grouphug:

07-07-2007, 07:07 AM

I am so pleased to see some more member galleries out there. Great pics you guys.

couple of things on it

The Keywords Section: is used in conjunction with the database search. They should be relevant to what people would search for
In Patricks collection I made all the keywords the same (Patrick collection). That way anyone searching the words "patrick" or "collection"--would find those pics
Key words should be things that associate the pic for a search
For instance, Karen's baby could be...nerak family babies
That way, any searches for one of those keywords would bring back the pic (no comma's in between words)

The Photo Description: This is the text that shows up under the picture. Please feel free to put in as long of a description as you want. If you are the owner, you are the only one that can edit your pics in your gallery
When uploading the pic, the title is what will show as the name of the picture (anything you like does not have to be file name)
The description will show underneath if someone clicks on the photo
Comments and ratings: These are for the other members and are not required obviously--you guys are welcome to comment and rate the pics basically at will. :couple:

08-19-2007, 02:12 PM
Wow!! I love this thing.

I just had a reason to research the cover of first edition photos and a search of each one in the gallery revealed exactly what I was looking for

Thanks to Jerome for pointing me in the right direction.

08-19-2007, 06:59 PM
So are photos being hosted by dt.com? Isn't that killing your bandwith?

Can we host remotely? I have a boatload of room on my Comcast account. Seems to me I should use it, since I pay for it.

08-19-2007, 07:02 PM
Actually the site has unlimited bandwith forever.

Before I put the gallery on, hostrocket assured me there would be plenty of space for years to come regardless of growth.

But I am cool with where ever folks host. I'd love member pics in here because they become part of the random image block on the pages

08-19-2007, 08:38 PM
Hmmm. Unlimited? We'll see lol.

Tell me when I blow your bandwith .

08-20-2007, 02:28 PM
Do your worst. :pirate:

Btw, Daghain - your Ireland photos were brilliant!!

08-21-2007, 06:16 AM
Thanks! :)

09-13-2007, 11:46 AM
How do you delete photos from your account?

09-13-2007, 11:54 AM
You should have an option under the photo itself that says move/delete.

when you click it, it simply does a little extra screen with a check mark box to delete.

If that doesn't work for you, let me know. :couple:

09-13-2007, 12:04 PM
I don't see that option under any of my photos :(

09-13-2007, 12:07 PM
hmmmm...I can look into it Lisa.

Do you want to PM me the one you want gone and I will delete if for you.

No problems I hope?

09-13-2007, 12:19 PM
No everythings cool - I'm just a bit obsessive compulsive about clutter
I'll pm them if thats cool...probably tomorrow though as I'm in a posting frenzy and might just have to check out chat too ;)

09-13-2007, 04:39 PM
I'm glad you're asking that question, because I was wondering the same thing. :D

Condo has wireless! 5 of us are sitting around surfing and drinking.

We're such geeks!

10-24-2007, 12:37 PM
Okay I'm an idiot. What the hell is the image url? If I click on a photo and c&p the url in my browser, it doesn't work. I'm confused.

10-24-2007, 12:57 PM
If you are using firefox, you should be able to right click the image and choose "copy image location"

In Internet Explorer--you have to right click>go to properties>copy the URL from there.

10-24-2007, 12:59 PM
Aha! Thanks. :D

11-05-2007, 12:17 AM
I am a damned old fool. I have tried to upload several photos but only my default photo and it's description shows. I tried two others and it said "image uploaded" but I do not see them nor their description.

Matt's instructions seem to have gone over my head or it has some holes...help!

Worked for me Jon.
I went to:
Members galleries

I chose upload photos, browsed my files, chose a pic and selected upload/submit

You now have a picture of my dog in your gallery. (I will delete shortly)

Got any naked pis of my wife?

Everyone else has!

11-09-2007, 11:10 PM
I am doing well thus far but the only place I can upload is on ewok1.

Why not my own?

11-10-2007, 08:38 AM
ewok1--that's some odd uploading for a sheep guy

If you go to Gallery>Upload Photo>

the first option should just stay on "member galleries" and it should put the pic into yours through your sign on

11-10-2007, 11:40 AM
How come we don't have the option to delete pics? I have a few "stray" ones I'd like to get rid of. :D

11-10-2007, 12:16 PM
freaky setting, see if you have an option to do it now Daggers.

11-10-2007, 03:00 PM
Got it now! Thanks! :D

04-02-2008, 11:19 AM
I dont know about you but i oftenly i'd like to find the galleries of a member (so with his pseudo) and its a fucking pain in the ass...

how to do it?

04-02-2008, 11:29 AM
Go to: http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/ which is a tab on the toolbar.

Then click Member Galleries.

Then use the alphabetical links to find the correct member. Simple as that, I think.

04-02-2008, 11:37 AM
Kevin pretty much summed it up, h-west. That's the easiest way.

04-02-2008, 12:10 PM

I am going to merge this with the 'How to: Member Photo Gallery' in the tech support thread with a 1 day redirect.

04-04-2008, 11:57 AM
Well I posted some pictures... Almost all of them I'm sure everyone has seen before. I really need to get a scanner or a picturephone and put new pictures on here!

I've been trying to post pictures other than as thumbnails and have been spectacularly unsuccessful. My images are on Imageshack, and I click on the Get cose for Forums button. I am then presented with two sets of codes, each of which seems to have two different addresses. No matter which of the four options I pick, I continually get a fail to upload the image when I'm in the Advanced mode of our forums here. What am I doing wrong? Here's the first of the two sets of addresses I get from Imageshack:

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8388/artofdarknessproofgw2.th.jpg (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=artofdarknessproofgw2.jpg)

And here's the second:

[img=http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8388/artofdarknessproofgw2.th.jpg] (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=artofdarknessproofgw2.jpg)

Edit: Now that I posted this, you'll note that the image shows instead of the first set of addresses, but it has that annoying verbiage at the bottom that is NOT in the image.

05-05-2008, 08:41 AM
What you would want to use is the "direct link" on Imageshack John.

Basically the rawest version of the link you can grab. Then use the "mountain" button in the tool bar to insert it.

The photo gallery here at the site actually does what imageshack does. It allows you to upload it from your computer to the site so that we can "host" it for you the way imageshack does.

Either one works.

I hope that answers your question.

Interesting. I just uploaded an image to your gallery w/o a problem. Sounds like a Matt issue.

07-17-2008, 07:49 AM
It only seems to happen with images I've saved from my digital camera. Anything from the built in camera on the Mac works fine. I'm wondering if the file is too big, maybe?

07-17-2008, 08:03 AM
Try resizing it and see if that works?

07-17-2008, 08:05 AM
I probably won't have time to get to it until next week. I'm going to be out of town a few days.

Randall Flagg
07-17-2008, 09:37 AM
Not sure what type of file your camera saves a picture as. I know some high end models save the pic as a bitmap, which creates HUGE files. Jpeg images are usually smaller.

07-17-2008, 10:38 AM
It's jpeg. That's why I'm stumped. I need to check the settings on the computer and camera, I guess. I can download them to Photobucket with no problem, though.

07-20-2008, 01:16 PM
Okay, I think I must be doing something wrong here. When I click on Gallery, I don't have an upload button. Am I maybe not looking in the right place or something? The instructions sound simple once I find that friggin' button!!

I've tried "My Photos", "Collections", etc., and nada. :wtf:

Come to think of it, I can't play any of the casino games or anything either. Am I too much of a newbie or something?

07-21-2008, 12:56 AM
When I got back into the site today (after I got BOOTED! :beat:), my pic upload link's there and I can do the casino stuff!

 Woohoo!

07-21-2008, 03:23 AM
I believe you had to reach 5 posts before you could access all the little bells and whistles, Gretchen.

07-21-2008, 03:28 AM
That'd explain it, Brice! I figured it might be something like that . . .

07-21-2008, 03:34 AM
You should be able to do everything everyone else can do now. If you have any trouble just ask and we'll be happy to help. :)

07-21-2008, 03:59 AM
Those are the hardest 5 posts...after that your hooked! :wtf:

08-17-2008, 07:40 PM
I uploaded a full-color photo and got this:

Photobucket has it correctly:

Suggestions? It looks like maybe the gallery was trying to resize the photo. Hmm....

08-17-2008, 08:58 PM
I have no idea what happened there. That's weird!

08-17-2008, 09:06 PM
Isn't it? I was flabbergasted.

08-18-2008, 04:38 AM
I have another report of that, not sure what is going on but just as soon as you think you have it all fixed. :shoot:

I'll try to figure it out.

Randall Flagg
08-18-2008, 07:04 AM
I did have that happen also. The thumbnail and pic looks like this:

When you click on the pic for the largest image you get the correct chroma:

08-18-2008, 08:02 AM
Weirdness! :panic:

08-18-2008, 08:20 AM
The new server has a different type of image system on it than the old one (imagemagic)--its probably a setting, I'll get right on it.

08-19-2008, 06:47 AM
I think I have this fixed but it doesn't seem to change the existing problem ones. If someone wants to reload one of those to test it for me, I would appreciate it. :grouphug:

08-19-2008, 07:04 AM
I might be able to get to it tonight - I have an HOA meeting to go to but should be free after that.

09-16-2008, 06:36 PM
Here's a shock, me with a problem with the gallery again.

When I try to upload a pic, I get a blank white page. Then, when I go back to the gallery, the picture is not there.

Weirdness.

09-16-2008, 10:08 PM
I've had the same problem. :(

I've tried on IE and Firefox with the same result...you click submit/upload and it takes a few seconds and then cuts to a white screen.

09-17-2008, 05:38 AM
I couldn't find it - so sorry if this has been asked already - is there a way to upload multiple photos at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

09-17-2008, 06:09 AM
Ahhh...I love those blissful days with no tech problems.

I'll look into the uploading.

The only way to upload multiple photos is if they are already hosted somewhere (like a photobucket folder). And that actually doesn't work great, but it is possible.

09-17-2008, 08:09 AM
I just feel better that I'm not the only one with the problem.

09-17-2008, 08:18 AM
Well, its kind of a problem because the thing worked fine for me.

Could you guys try again?

09-17-2008, 08:23 AM
Well, from my work computer (IE on a Compaq) it just spins the uploading icon - forever.

09-17-2008, 08:30 AM
Hmmmm...is there a chance the photo is really big?

09-17-2008, 08:47 AM
Not the one on this machine. The ones at home might be. I thought there was no limit to file size.

09-17-2008, 09:24 AM
There isn't, but it could take a long time.

09-17-2008, 09:33 AM
I don't think that's the problem, but it still doesn't explain the white screen of death at home.

09-17-2008, 09:40 AM
Yeah, and I could not get that to repeat. :orely:

I'll keep looking into it.

09-17-2008, 09:42 AM
I'll try to remember to give it a try from home tonight with a smaller image. :)

Randall Flagg
09-18-2008, 06:51 AM

Ok I have an idea now. I hope no one minds if I practice.

02-03-2009, 10:37 PM

02-03-2009, 11:06 PM
Ok I THINK I have it. I just need to figure out how to upload a photo without creating a new album.

02-03-2009, 11:11 PM
And now to delete a single photo from an album.

I have seen the light! This has been explained to me time and time again. One night, Matt handheld me through the process and roughly a year later...I have it!!
Expect more photos as soon as my homework is done for the week.

08-18-2009, 11:46 AM
I really need help! I can only upload one picture to my album! I have 28 images in my que. I keep trying to upload pictures, but it takes forever and then I end up with a white screen! I need some major help.:(

08-18-2009, 11:51 AM
Several of us have had that white screen problem. I have no idea what it is. Usually for me it's pictures I've taken with my digital camera - everything else seems to be fine (cell phone, webcam, etc.).

The general consensus seems to be that it may have something to do with the file size.

08-18-2009, 12:07 PM
Is there any way for the images in my que, I have 28, to be deleted? I think this is the biggest problem. Maybe an administrator?

08-18-2009, 12:57 PM
I'm not even sure what that means Pixie, did you choose the "large file upload" and point it at a hosted album?

08-18-2009, 01:35 PM
No I don't think I did. I think I have found my major issue. I could manage to upload 2 photos. Everything else has a file size that is too big. :pullhair::arg:

08-18-2009, 01:53 PM
When I tried to use a URL from tiny pic, it went into process image list, then it went into bulk uploads screen. When I tried the bulk upload the screen went white.

08-18-2009, 01:58 PM
Pixie - Did you try uploading from your own computer, rather than a website?

08-18-2009, 02:00 PM
I haven't messed around with that bulk upload option too much. One of the things I don't like about the gallery itself is it won't bulk upload from your local computer at all. Not sure why they would put an option for already hosted images. :scared:

Anyway, glad you got it worked out.

08-18-2009, 02:20 PM
Pixie - Did you try uploading from your own computer, rather than a website?

Yes I did and only two photos will upload. Everything else goes into a white screen.

08-18-2009, 04:27 PM
I went into my pictures and I cropped them and the file size now fits. So I am uploading my collection and it is going good.:)

Randall Flagg
08-19-2009, 08:44 AM
Glad it worked out. Forgot to ask if the images are jpegs, gifs, etc?

08-19-2009, 02:07 PM
The images are jpegs.
I would like to thank everyone who gave me advice and helped me. :grouphug:

07-18-2010, 04:56 AM
I am having the same problem as discussed above. I took pictures with my digital camera and tried to upload a few into an "album" but I just get a white screen. No error message about file size or anything--just a white screen.

Then, I go back to the upload page and it says photos are "in queue." Am I supposed to wait for the queue to clear? How do I know if a photo is too big? How do I make it smaller? I've got several hundred photos of my collection I spent all weekend so far taking. I'd like to start my own collections thread but I can't unless I can get these photos hosted here. I'll be really bummed out if all my work this weekend was all for nothing. :(

07-18-2010, 08:45 AM
I think it has something to do with the size of the photo. I know I can put pictures from my 3 megapixel cell phone camera in with no problem, but my 8 megapixel camera absolutely won't work. You could try resizing them and see if that helps.

Randall Flagg
07-19-2010, 05:12 AM
Try to limit the size of your photos to less than 2,000x1,200.

07-19-2010, 05:54 AM
I love the photo gallery. Thanks so much for this feature!

11-04-2010, 07:57 PM
Sorry to keep posting this question, I think this is the right spot for it.
When I try to upload photos I am directed to a page with this error noted.

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 62914560 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 10000 bytes) in /home/jsmith/public_html/thedarktower.org/gallery/image-inc.php on line 138

Anyone seen this before?
Any suggestions?

Thanks Brian........

Randall Flagg

Lower the total image file size.

12-16-2010, 10:02 PM
Hi! Quick question to anyone who might be able to offer some help with the gallery. I successfully uploaded my first four pictures, yay! But when I uploaded the 5th and 6th, despite the system giving me a "successful upload" notice, I cannot find them anywhere... Not sure what I am doing wrong. All pics are jpegs reduced in size to 800x600 pxls.

On a different note, how again does one move pics into a separate sub-gallery as talked about on page one of this thread? Those last two attempted pics were non-King books and I was hope to keep them in a separate folder of some kind.

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Randall Flagg
12-17-2010, 06:38 AM
I just test uploaded a pic in your Gallery. There are no sub-folders-some Collectors asked for and were given a Collections area to upload pics to.

12-17-2010, 07:39 AM
Yeah, I see the cartoon you uploaded and I just uploaded one fine as well... Hmmmmm... I'm not sure what to say except maybe I was doing something wrong last night. Too tired probably. :) Anyway, thanks for your help! I should have probably waited until this morning and tried again before posting. Ah, well. No worries about the collections area. I can sort everything with the Keywords anyway, once I get many pictures uploaded.

Thanks again!

12-17-2010, 08:03 AM
Ah, I just rann into the problem again and I think I figured it out. I have several versions of the same pics on my hard drive and I think I was accidentally uploading the gigantic 3000x2000 copy instead of the 800x600. Still, it is weird that is gave me a successful message.

Anyway, all figured out. Thanks again!

Have tried to upload a pic four times now - all four times it looks successful, but when I go backl to my member library the new photo is not there - I have uploaded over 250 photos in the past weith no problem. The file in question is either carrie 040508.jpg or carrie040508.jpg.

I've tried both with the blank space and without it.

Thanks - uploaded a smaller version without any problems! Its good to know there is some sort of limitation. THe original files I was trying were huge as I was going for high high resolution. I think what I ended up with was fine though!

Just host them yourself on a service like photobucket.

I prefer to just tape them to my monitor.
