I've been wanting the gift of edition of IT for awhile now since it's more in my price range than the S/L. The cheapest I've seen recently has been $900 or more. I saw one on ebay today for $835 and I offered him $600. He countered offered with $700 and I accepted. Still a bit more than I wanted to pay, but the chances of finding one closer to $500 is likely pretty slim at this point.

I came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to find the gift edition of IT for cheaper anytime soon since it seems to have doubled in value over the last year or two.

That’s great that you got a copy! I think $700 is a good price.

Final approval copy arrived today, which means they should be finished by the end of the month, so I would expect these to ship in August:

Any update on the slipcases for the Gwendy's Magic Feather trade edition? Hoping those are rolling after The Institute ... :)

Yep, those and If It Bleeds are next, I believe! The Night Shift cases are a big job, so we'll need the case maker to get those done before starting the next project, but I'll post a time frame for GMF as soon as I have one!

For the people that have both the CD gift edition and the PS Publishing numbered 40th anniversary edition of Carrie.

Which edition do you think is the best overall edition or the one you prefer the most?

I have both and the numbered edition is the nicest of the two in my opinion. By some distance.

Now that Night Shift is nearing completion I was wondering if you got a good start on The Stand? I seem to recall that you shared artwork for the book a long long time ago but don't remember hearing or seeing anything else. Any chance it is already at the printer?

I revcently acquired this Carrie proof, it has alternate cover art. In the proof collecting community we are very curious how many of these were printed?
Does brian know?
As far as i know these were included in some CD grab bags, so far I count four.

I was very pleased with this grab bag. I was concerned that the S/L would be a duplicate but I also did not have Doctor Sleep.
My Grab Bag contained:
Passion Play by Richard Matheson (Signed PC)
Hardbound CD Magazine #52 signed by 12 contributors
Hardbound Grave Tales #6 Signed by 7 contributors including Joe Hill (The only duplicate I received)
Carrie ARC Alternate copy not previously distributed
Doctor Sleep Signed/Limited PC

My guess would be 50! It looks like they were ready to go, but then something made them change their mind.

Also a quick update. I got word yesterday that the Institute cases have finally shipped out to us. I'm not sure when they'll be here (tracking didn't have an estimated delivery date yet), but assuming they arrive later this week I would expect them to be shipping out to customers either the end of next week or the beginning of the following week.

I saw same seller today, they've got a Blockade Billy S/L, went through the trouble of saying /350 but didn't bother to put the actual number or a photo of the limitation showing number. That's a pet peeve and I hate it, so looked at seller name and it's cdancpub in Michigan. Immediately figured if they'd ripoff CD's name for their own they'd probably rip me off, so blacklisted them. That's what you get for violating a pet peeve.

My understanding was that they are all 1st printings, but they are technically not 1st editions. So they're 2nd Edition, 1st printings. I believe the books were printed specifically for the sets. Particularly since the set has it's own DJ variant and it's very unlikely they would have swapped the DJs from already printed books.

the scribner slipcase for then Hodges trilogy was made after End of Watch was published, by that time, the forst two books were over a year old, some first printings were remaining in a warehouse for the sets, and were given new dustjackets, and the remaining slipcases were filled with later printings, I remember when that came out and debated getting one ( I passed). so some had first printings, most did not.

If they were printed specifically for the set, they would technically be 2nd Editions. As they are technically a different edition than the original, even if the only difference is a different dust jacket. Since the dust jacket was issued from the publisher with the book I'd argue that it is a 2nd edition.

Also for what it's worth, I've got 4 or 5 damaged sets still sitting here and the ones I looked at all were marked as first printings. Now that's not a very large sample size, but that reinforces my thoughts on them being 2nd Edition, 1st Printings and specifically printed for the sets.

I just did a compare between the original trades and the set. Apart from the DJ's the books are identical in every way. I would agree with ZombieElvis, at least some of the sets used repurposed original 1st editions.

so perhaps the Scribner Hodges slipcased set may or may not contain 'second state' first edition, first printing Mr Mercedes, may contain a second state 2nd or 3rd printing first edition, etc.

I'm mostly making assumptions here (from knowing how the business works). I find it very unlikely that these weren't printed specifically for the set. If for no other reason than by the time End of Watch was published they would have long gotten rid of any remaining copies of hardcovers from the first 2 books by either selling them off to distributors for a large discount or remaindering them.

On top of that processing new DJs onto old books is a lot of work. Work like that is always cheaper to do at the original manufacturing stage than it is to come back and do later. My guess is that it would be more cost effect for them to print all new books and remainder any leftovers than it would be for them to reprocess any leftovers into these new sets. On the scale that S&S works at we're talking printing costs of probably $2 - $3 at most. So if you factor in what they would get for remaindering then your re-dj'ing costs can't be more than a dollar or two. That disappears fast once you figure that the books they'll use would be spread out across the country and have to be shipped back to a single facility, then processed by hand to remove the current DJs, and then most likely they'd be processed into new DJ's mostly by hand, as the printer probably want's nothing to do with putting new DJs on old books.

That said, this is all spit balling. I really have no idea what S&S did and unless they've come out and specifically said then really we're all guessing.

I agree. I was just checking my set to see what editions I had in the set. All 3 books have full number lines.
The case is pretty much folded up thin cardboard but it is original to the set so would it make a difference to someone if it had a different slipcase? It's not a particularly pricey set to begin with

Brian861

The ones CD made for the books individually are nice. Not sure there be much of a market for a case to hold all three. Especially when you figure in how tight it'd be with Brodart.

Around a half hour ago I was excited to receive a CD e-mail update on Night Shift - what would it be this time? About to ship? We've been in the home stretch, so no doubt the news had to be exciting, right?

It was this:

...NIGHT SHIFT has been completed at the printer, and the slipcases and traycases have started into production! Our case maker is currently only operating at 15% to 20% of their normal production line staffing due to the social distancing measures they have in place, so we're not going to announce a specific publication date just yet, but we did want to let everyone know this one is much closer to publication and will be out this year.

...which seems mighty close to the update posted on CD's website on 6/19/20:

...the Limited Edition and Artist Numbered Edition of Night Shift have been completed, and the slipcases and traycases are being started now that the case maker has finished books to get the sizing just right...We're not going to announce a publication date just yet because these big Stephen King projects have A LOT of moving parts, and there can be delays, etc. We just don't want to post a date until we're 100% sure of what that date should be, but we did want to let everyone know this one is much closer to publication and will be out this year.

...as mentioned in my post from that date: https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?5552-Cemetery-Dance-discussion-thread&p=1203093&viewfull=1#post1203093

...amounting to: books are done, cases being started, will be published this year.

I'm not complaining (I understand about the delay), just curious about the process that led to them e-mailing an "update" almost 7 weeks after posting pretty much the exact same info on their site (feels like a glitch).

To add to what Brian said (though I don't think we mentioned it in the email), the books are actually in hand now. Part of the reason we've been doing a bunch of storage clean out deals lately was to make sure we had plenty of room for them and anything else that will be coming in while these are waiting for their cases.

I know this topic has been brought up previously.....and I do not want to beat a dead horse......but I am going to.

I love the slipcases that CD makes.....but I do not love the fit....they are often too tight with a Brodart....and often snug without.

In the past CD has stated that the majority of their customers who buy their slipcases do not use Brodarts (or similar DJ protectors). I have no reason to doubt that......but I would argue that those customers who do not care enough to put a Brodart on their DJs....also would not care if CD opened up their cases by one millimeter.

I ask our friends at CD to consider this when making their future slipcases.....that they have an opportunity to increase satisfaction in a large group of their customers....without decreasing satisfaction in another group.

Thank you for the response Brian....and your willingness to accommodate.

Frankly....all of them.....but the worst offenders that I have seen are the aftermarket SK slipcases.

Hearts in Suspension and Elevation are almost impossible to get out of the slipcase with a Brodart on.

One mm would make all the difference.

Sometimes there is also a little size variation between the approval case and the final case — just a tiny amount — which is how you end up with super tight cases (in general) sometimes.

Our concern in the past has been that sometimes the size variation goes in the other direction, which makes the cases a little bit bigger on the “standard” book... which actually works out well for the collectors who cover their DJs! But our concern has been if we add a smidge of room AND the size variation goes on the bigger side, will the fit be too loose on regular books without Brodarts?

But I totally get where you’re coming from, and I’ll thinking we just go for it and try on the IF IT BLEEDS cases. (Which I will have a cool update on shortly, I hope.)

Yea that sizing variation has been a problem in the past. I don't remember it with Hearts In Suspension, but it was definitely a problem on Elevation. The guys were actually manually stretching the cases to get a better fit before shipping them out.

I agree with the idea of loosening the slipcases for brodart. I will say that I have Hearts in Suspension in a CD case with Brodart and while it is snug it is not uncomfortably so.

Having a millimeter of wiggle room height wise is a good idea anyway, I think. If the dust jacket isn’t quite flush with the book at the top, a snug slipcase can cause the top jacket edges to get crimped.

Or just fill them with peanuts unless the Styrofoam is more cost effective.

Ehh it's 50/50 but we're moving away from using peanuts all together, and peanuts are less effective as unless the bubble bags are really tight they kinda just fall out. I only use this weird foam when the size of the case doesn't match up well with the sizes that the styrofoam sheets come in.

Are there hot-wire cutters designed to cut styrofoam? I seem to remember something of that sort from when I was a kid.

I noticed the slipcase was packaged with packing paper vs peanuts.

There are, and that's a option. They're just generally more money than I'd prefer to spend on something like that, that will probably only get used infrequently, since I only need the special foam for cases that end up being a odd thickness. Plus there's also the burning hazard and melting plastic fumes to think about.

Yep. We're giving a trial run to a packing paper machine right now, and it seems to be working out pretty well. So we're probably going to keep using that going forward. Saves a lot of mess in the warehouse as well as all that plastic waste. And as long as the guys use plenty of paper it really shouldn't have any effect on the quality of the packing.

Our local shipping supply company tried to sell me on air cushions. I refused. They really only work if your boxes are oversized and even then the books would probably be flopping around loose (if Amazon is any indicator).

i hate the way Amazon ships new releases so i tend to get books from VJ Books, i recently got a signed first edition of Malorie by Josh Malerman, , had a brodart mylar cover , the signature was a special tipped in page, and the books was in a box full of bubble wrap and foam popcorn. That is how i want a newrelease sent to me, not in a oversized box full of air or a barely padded envelope, eveything i get from Amazon gets dinged to death!

I still order books from Amazon, with the understanding these are my "reading" copies. If it is a book I want to collect, I order another copy from CD (preferably with the custom slipcase).

Amazon would not be in business if Tippy or David from Betts worked there. Either that or they both would have been fired the first day. I can hear the supervisor yelling at them now - saying You used 400 boxes of padding on just 1 book. and it took you an hour to pack! You have 5000 more orders before you can go home!

Unfortunately the majority of people who buy books from Amazon don't really care. They're not after collectibles, they're just reading the book and shoving them on a shelf or trading them in at a used book store. So Amazon doesn't really have a lot of incentive to care.

My all-time "winner" from Amazon was when a 24 X 24 X 20 box arrived... with ONE air cushion and one book shrink-wrapped to a piece of cardboard... And oddly enough, the book was fine!! And my cats loved the box, so everyone got something that day!

I think I’ve already mentioned that time I received two hardcover novels in a box from Amazon. That’s it. One book stacked on top of the other in a cardboard box. No air cushions, packing peanuts or packaging at all.

Miraculously, the books survived almost unscathed. But it was still a bit of a shock.

Ehh hard to say, this one has been at the printer functionally since it was announced. Which is still a really long turnaround time for the printer. Though it doesn't help that it had all sorts of problems at the printer.

October would be awesome, but unless the case maker really ramps up production there's no way that's going to happen. Trying to temper people's expectations here, the casemaking company is very very backlogged. At this point I'll just be happy if we have the cases and get NS shipped by the end of the year. I know my storage space would be happy to have that space cleared up too.

I'm not trying to be Mr. Downer, and I fully understand and appreciate the constrictive nature of CD's operations these days, but I have to say that this:

At this point I'll just be happy if we have the cases and get NS shipped by the end of the year.

...struck me as the first inkling that the statement on CD's production update page that NS "will be out this year" is becoming unlikely.

As I said, I understand, etc. etc., and it's clear that they're getting things done even now, which, in and of itself, is kind of amazing, but even given all that, it's a bit deflating.

(Maybe I'd be a bit more "inflated" if a certain Texas-based bookstore would stop trying to defraud me out of $15 at a time over old Clive Barker books).

You're telling me. I just largely don't trust the case makers estimates right now. I'm also trying to be pessimistic about the dates for these things as I really don't want people to get their hopes up. It's much better to be pleasantly surprised if the cases get done sooner, than it would be for us to be optimistic with our estimates and then just have to push the dates back.

Thanks for asking! The artwork is the same, but the DJ for the Lettered Edition has the Lettered Edition information on it instead of the Limited Edition information. A pet peeve of mine for a long time is Lettered Editions that have the Limited Edition DJ (thus confusing some people down the road) and DJs that have the info for BOTH editions (thus confusing some people down the road). We weren't able to use a second piece of artwork for this project, but I did want the text to reflect the editions properly.

I think Brian was trying to get the LP direct sales taken care of before putting together CD's and bringing them into the office. I think he's working on putting them together now, but he told me it could take a bit. So I'd say it shouldn't be too terribly long. The shipping schedule here at CD is pretty flexible at the moment, so once they're here we should be able to turn them around fairly quickly.

Received Midnight Under The Big Top anthology yesterday. Wow- what a neat book! Love the extra large size on such a well-designed and copiously-illustrated tome. I love books like this: thoughtfully assembled, marvelously designed (there's really some fine effort here from Gail Cross, and it is immediately appreciated), nicely illustrated (again- abundantly!), and best of all- $50. A nice price for this package. The paper seems exceptional as well- not sure if you guys have used this before, but it immediately stood out while perusing. Nice job, guys. Thanks for making it. I hope you consider making more anthologies like this as it's a real treat and hearkens back to great CD packages of the past like October Dreams.

I've been a member of the CD collector's club for several years. Today I received a Collector's Club 10 card. Don't recall ever receiving one previously so I'm just wondering if it is for some purpose or is it just a "here's your sign" kind of thing?

We made a card for the first CDCC, so it seemed fitting to make one for the CDCC 10.

Dan on the CD Forum said it was just a fun throwback to the very first CDCC when they issued a card. I've been a member since CDCC 7 and never got one before. You can use it to chop lines, as a phony gift card to someone you don't plan on seeing again, as a bookmark, as a coaster, and to make the people from CDCC 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 jealous.

So it seems they are actively shipping these.

The Stephen King one, right? We're still assembling those, I believe. (The Misfit Grab Bag has actually been sitting in the warehouse for a while, taking up space. We announced these in the wrong order.)

I carry mine around all the time. We signed up for mail notification and i could not get to the post office for 2 days, but i saw a LETTER from Cemetery Danse. I just knew Brian and Richard were writing me to tell me that i could buy an exclusive signed King Book or thank me for being such a good customer over the years that i was going to get a tour of the CD factory/store like Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

But i was just as happy to get my CC 10 card. Too excited to actually get a letter from CD! Well played and nice surprise!

As Brian indicated a few days ago, here's the new update on Night Shift:

The slipcases and traycases are deep in production, with our casemaker promising to deliver them just after Thanksgiving, which means we'll be shipping preorders for the Gift Edition and Artist Numbered Edition in December. The Lettered Edition is with our binder, and when that work is done he'll begin making the cases for that edition. Since all of his work is done by hand, the Lettered Edition will ship in 2021. Thank you very much for your patience!

Yep they will be the last to ship. Typically we don't touch the remqarques until we're done shipping everything else. It's too easy for them to get mixed up with the regular editions since they look the same and I don't want to risk accidently sending remarques to people who didn't pay for them. So they will ship after we're through the regular Gift and Artist Editions.

This just arrived from CD in the Forthcoming Review Copy Grab Bag. Of interest to SK collectors may be Kevin Quigley's "Stephen King Limited".

At 302 pages in length, the first 153 are text telling the stories behind the SK Limiteds; 112 pages are a photo gallery of US Limiteds (starting with Firestarter and ending with Misery); and the remainder is a photo gallery of Non-US Limiteds (starting with Phantasia's ES and ending with PS Publishing's Night Shift) and a few pages of remarques.

All photos are Black & White with most consisting of Trayscase/Slipcase and Cover illustrations. The sole interior photo is of The New Lieutenant's Rap. No signatures pages are shown, which I personally think is a missed opportunity; would have been great to see the various versions with additional authors and artists, and to see how his signature changed over the years.

The few remarques and art inserts also could have been tremendously expanded, with The Collector's page as a reference; there are MANY remarques (and much original artwork) available and would make a splendid addition to a book like this. Lastly, the galleries sections would have been very nice in color; regular paper for the text sections and glossy color for the photos would have been great, but yes driven up cost as well.

Look for it to be published in 2021, a nice in-hand reference guide to SK Limiteds and the stories behind them.

Very nice overview! Thank you!

We should have noted on there, but we didn't, that all of the photos will be full-color in the finished books. And you guessed the paper stock situation just about perfectly. The first half with be a standard paper stock, and the second half will be a special stock to show off the full-color photos in all their glory.

For the interior artwork and remarques, each piece would need to be licensed from the artist, which would have pushed the retail price beyond what we thought the market could support. (Some would argue it falls under fair use, but a literal photo gallery with no commentary seems past the line to us. Plus... we'd rather pay the artists for their work! We just couldn't make the budget come together.)

That said, I hope folks prove us wrong and the book sells out in record time because that would definitely help with my proposal that we publish an expanded edition in a few years with the books published since Kev's deadline AND more material in general. :)

I like the signature sheet idea! I'll be stealing that idea for future editions...

Thanks again!

That's great, George, wonderful to see the horror bug passed on. I did the same for my daughter a number of years back, with the Sub Press S/L HC of Neil Gaiman's CORALINE, a work -- both in film and graphic novel -- that she was wild about when young (and still is). I've had a lot of satisfying purchases in my 30+ years of collecting, but that one has to lead the list.

Gift edtions should be real soon. I've got a bunch of orders from last weeks sale to get through and some holiday gift certificates with custom artwork we just recieved back from Glenn, then we'll be shipping them. So we should be starting either at the end of this week or the beginning of next. Gonna take some time though, there's a lot of books to ship and this go around because of the miss matched schedules at the different manufacturers we have to slipcase the books ourselves, which will add to the shipping time drastically. So don't expect a quick shipping process.

Any new updates about Strange Weather or Sharp Objects?

All four volumes of Strange Weather are at the printer, and I believe the signature sheets for Sharp Objects are signed and headed back to the office.

What ever happened to Grave Tales comics??? I loved reading them and ordered the next 3 in a bundle about 5 years ago but nothing has ever been published.:orely:

Mindy and our designer are working on three issues now, with plans to send them to the printer all at the same time this summer, so they ship together. Thanks for asking!

Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the update. I can't wait:excited:!!!

Any update on the 3 Grave Tales comics? Your last response was on 3-25-19

I haven’t heard anything from Mindy on them, so I will ask!

Brian

This is hilarious.... probably just waiting on the case maker now. Lol
I can’t wait to hear the response on this one.
Seriously, did I read this right? Going on seven years for 3 comic books?
