I ordered my copy literally ten minutes after the site went live - I knew the 'Big Announcement' would be made that day and I checked the CD site multiple times (I was also the one who posted the first news about Blockade Billy here in The Corner).

I ordered mine as the site went live, like yourself. I got my shipping notice ten days before they arrived, (got them last Friday). Did you get a shipping notice yet?

So this is from an email received today from CD:

"We're very pleased to announce we will be getting a limited supply of copies of Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King, which will be published by Scribner later this year!"

A limited supply? So I should pay full price from them as opposed to getting it cheaper elsewhere...who do they think will be suckered by something like this?

They do this with every new release of King's. You also have to pay in advance.

CurtSeattle
05-21-2010, 07:57 PM
It is the 1st of an apocalyptic vampire trilogy. The book isn't even out and the movie "rights" have already been purchased for almost $2 million!!! Ridley Scott I believe has already signed on to do it.

Could be very good. I bit on the $75 one. Seems cool and even Stephen King talked him up. Shrug. :)

biomieg
05-21-2010, 11:55 PM
Well... it's probably a fine book but seriously... why is this a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT? And why a $500 lettered state? All because King speaks highly of it? Do CD (or any other publisher for that matter) seriously think that King's praise is enough for us to compulsively pull out our wallets and smack some cash into their bank accounts? Because, face it... we all got this email because we bought KING's books, not because we are regular Joes who buy a nice trade edition of a lesser know author every now and then.

... or am I being cynical here?

Brice

Has anyone heard of him before? What's this crap about $500 for a "hand lettered copy."

Oh, they could start lettering them by prinitng the letters...just so they could announce a new special edition which would be hand lettered....charge more....and delay longer. I know ...I know you're thinking of books having been ten plus years and customers still haven't gotten them, but this is a whole new level of exclusivity...basically you have to reincarnate before you get your book.

jhanic
05-22-2010, 02:58 AM
Just because King recommends a book doesn't mean that I'm going to like it. He's highly praised books that I didn't like. Not that they were bad, it's just that we have different likes and dislikes. I can't see spending that much money for something that I may not like.

John

carlosdetweiller
05-22-2010, 05:05 AM
Personally, I can't believe people are still debating whether or not to prepay for ANYTHING to be published by CD. Folks this thread is 62 pages long! And there is nothing posted here to warrant continuing to prepay. Wait for the book to be published and then buy it if you still want it. It will probably be cheaper then anyway.

Brice

Not saying that it will be a great book b/c King recommends it. Just saying that apocalyptic is always hot. Vampires are burning hot. Apocalyptic Vampire Trilogy = hot to me.

I always seem to like the types of books like this. The Stand, Swan Song and others come to mind.

Ridley Scott does GREAT work in my opinion and this is right up his alley.

The author got about $3 million for the 3 book deal and $1.75 million for the movie rights. Someone must like him and his work. hehehe!

$75 for a signed numbered book before he is really even known by anyone seems like a cool roll of the dice. If I like the book, then all the better.

I know I will. Most every King recommendation I have read in regards to things he says are worth me reading are right on point with what I like to read, so I'm actually excited to read this book! :)

I do agree with you Curt in that it really sounds like it's going to be a nice book, but to me it feels like CD is pushing the King blurb in our faces hoping that we will pay $500 for a lettered edition of a book simply because SK recommends it. I just wish they would stop doing that. Sure, it may be a big announcement... for all I know this guy is going to be the next big thing... but CD's marketing strategy just rubs me the wrong way.

Cujo56
05-22-2010, 12:51 PM

I read the Abe Lincoln vampire book and it was definitely a fun read.

Last night I ran over to my local bookstore and asked them if they had a copy of The Passage. I too am interested to see what the big hullabaloo was about.
They had a couple copies of the ARC and wondered what took me so long to ask about it! (They're good people).
I must say it's a pretty massive book, over 900 pages.

I've gotten yet another email about it, and how it's the newest flavor-of-the-month, blah blah blah and how it's an epic struggle blah blah and basically telling me that it's the greatest book ever...

Yet, for the guy's s/l edition of this magnum opus, he chooses the publisher with a terrible track record...while Grant sits there with nothing to do.

It probably will sell out, given this publicity push, and probably will hit the publication date, for the same reason...still a laugh, though.

I'm all set with The Passage...I'll buy it used on Amazon one day...

Got this from Steve Sargent's email:

"The big news this week was of course regarding the exceptional limited edition of "The Passage" by Justin Cronin. This will be a huge title, and the buzz around this just could not be better. Well, the limited edition is now COMPLETELY sold out from the publisher - all 750 numbered copies and 26 lettered - all gone. Talking to a couple of other booksellers, it seems I may (and not for the first time) priced this title well below what the market would bear - but at least those of you that were in quick picked up a good deal, and you can look forward with anticipation to what will be a pretty astute investment, I think. By the way, I had confirmation from the publishers now that (due to the effort being put in to this volume) it is likely to be issued around Nov/Dec of this year."

So...the s/l will come out at least six months after the trade edition, which means loooong after the buzz has worn off...and that assumes it actually comes out in this time frame, what with the "effort" being put in and all.

Not impressed.

Apparently the first book is split up into three chunks, with the first segment being by far the strongest. I think i'll have to get the trade, though am I the only one who finds all the 'hype' off-putting?, makes me less likely to buy it not more lol. Still the more hype it receives the cheaper the trade hardback will become.

You are definitley not the only one....I feel like pre-hype for a book like this is more directed at the possible future marketing arm, and has no relation to the quality of the story.

I'll flip through the trade - and since he'll be in Portsmouth, maybe get it signed - but I'm not jumping at it.

Part of the reason "Harry Potter" was actually good was because it was not pre-hyped...it was just a book with a neat idea that suddenly became huge.

The same with (if anyone's heard of it), the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series, which again was a hystierically funny, but niche book that later on got sucked up by the marketing machine.

Well, I've been very quiet on the board for a while due to a road trip and reading my advanced copy of The Passage.

Roughly 750 page Novel.

(sorry for adding to the hype but this guy is good)

Justin Cronin introduces and develops characters in a great way. Half way through and have enjoyed immensely.

No waist of time here...back to searching (you will understand that when you read)

I might order a few books this weekend. 30% off sounds like a good deal.

It got me in! I was waiting and hoping for a discount, :excited:as I had my eye on two books. Then, when I started ordering ... ended up ordering 3 books, :beat:with the one-third discount.

Now I wait for them. They say my copy of Occasional Demons is on its way. In my profligate manner, I had forgotten even ordering it, all that time ago.

I agree the hype is a bit much, but I haven't found a review yet that says the book is bad. Everyone seems to think it is fantastic. I'm not sorry I passed up on the S/L edition, but I do think I'll order a signed 1st edition from River Run. Although, one review I read comparing it to Lord of the Rings is a bit much

Just a quick note of praise for CD. I just received books 3-5 for the current Book Club and the selections exceeded my expectations.

- DT: Complete Concordance w/ slipcase
- Last Exit for the Lost
- Catching Hell- Novella #20

And these are all signed, numbered, etc.

I paid $149 for a 12 book membership (plus 2 bonus books) and I just received $145 in books (and good ones at that.) Kudos to you CD!

Yea surprisingly CD is starting to send out a bunch of books, I just received Halloween: New Poems yesterday. I think I can safely assume Blockade Billy made CD some good money so they now are able to actually publish some books.

One thing of note I passed on the Passage, but then was able to secure a copy through Gauntlet at $100. Sure it's a mark-up, but considering the hype, I feel pretty happy to get it at that price because it sounds like this will be very expensive on the market considering it's attracting mainstream readers and they are promoting the heck out of the trade edition.

Not to be Negative Nelly, but mainstream readers don't drive the s/l prices....Dan Brown had a few limiteds of his latest book, and after a brief spike, it's not a big deal - and that's millions of readers.

I think $100's a good price, though...I'm sure there'll be a little spike.

RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth, NH still has copies for preorder. Their signing will be on June 21 and the books will be shipped out shortly after.

They are charging $27.00 for the book and if you want it shipped they give you the choice of Media Mail or Priority Mail.

You have to order the full price copy (plus S&H) from CD because only CD can offer the high level of customer support you need. Every other large bookseller in the world that charges 40-50% off cover price is going to cause you so many headaches and delays delivering the book that you'll wish you had baught the CD copy.

"Hi there!
You're receiving this email because you purchased a slipcase for Blockade Billy by Stephen King.
We're pleased to report that our slipcase maker expects to have the prototype in our hands next week, and their schedule is almost set for the rest of the summer. If all goes well, we're estimating they'll be done making these cases in August, but we'll send you another email when we have a confirmed date."

Any opinions on whether it would be better to order the UK hardcover of Full Dark, No Stars from Cemetary Dance for $40 plus shipping with the expectation of getting a mint copy, as opposed to a discount version from Amazon.com.uk, whose parcel wrapping practices are as bad as Amazon.com.usa, and which therefore would most likely arrive in a damaged condition?

Whereabouts do you live? Isn't there a big chain bookstore in town? I prefer to support small publishers and order directly but that can get pricey so a lot of times I find myself going to Chapters/Coles for new releases. They offer bestsellers at 30% off and you get an additional 10% if you're a member. A lot of times it's cheaper than Amazon and you get to look through the stacks of books and pick the copy you want. Also, as crappy as Wal-mart as a company are, they do offer heavily discounted books. I'm sure a paperback of UTD will pop up for sale and you'd be able to pick your own covers.

I complained and they said to ship the book back to them and they'd ship me a new one. I then told them that the shipping cost would be excessive and this was not acceptable. They then told me not to ship it back and they'd send me a new one anyway. I ended up donating the damaged one to my local Veteran's Hospital.

I did ask about the Lettered SOD I. I spoke with a woman named Andrea, who handles the retail business accounts. She is the one who told me that SOD II is slated for August release. She told me to contact Mindy regarding SOD I Lettered, who handles all the "high end" books as Andrea called them. I did not bother to then ask Mindy. I will though. I have to walk a tight line here as I am now a business customer rather than a general consumer. I'm not afraid to ask the unpleasant question, but I have to "play nice in the sandbox as it were."

I would assume receipt to customers in September.

Fingers crossed.

Did they have that many people back out of their orders or did they take fewer orders than what they had books? I was told yesterday that Secretary of Dreams II is scheduled for release in August (yes, of THIS year). Hope that is true!

Did you ask about the lettered edition of SOD I? Anything on LEGACIES?

I did ask about the Lettered SOD I. I spoke with a woman named Andrea, who handles the retail business accounts. She is the one who told me that SOD II is slated for August release. She told me to contact Mindy regarding SOD I Lettered, who handles all the "high end" books as Andrea called them. I did not bother to then ask Mindy. I will though. I have to walk a tight line here as I am now a business customer rather than a general consumer. I'm not afraid to ask the unpleasant question, but I have to "play nice in the sandbox as it were."

Brian told me that :
"Secretary 2 is on schedule for an end of summer pub date!"

So, MAYBE they'll be issueing both SOD2 (gift edition), as well as the lettered SOD1 at the end of the summer.

After consulting with the author and his New York publisher about the demand for this title, we have updated the print run so that more of his fans will be able to obtain a copy for their collections at the original retail price.

I haven't seen any advance proofs of SOD2 yet. These usually come out a few months before the actual publication of the book. Of course, we're talking Cemetary Dance here, so who knows? (I have a copy of the Legacies proof, which has yet to see the light of day ten years after the publication of the proof!)

So it went from 750 copies to 948 copies and they emailed folks on the waiting list to say some became available, but didn't say they expanded the print run?

SKEEEZY.

Those are two different books. If I was on the waiting list for a book limited to 750 copies, I may not be interested in one limited to 948.

Don't know why I'm surprised though.

CD can do whatever they want at this point, just as long as they keep on getting caught up, and to do that they need more sales. I received Sims 5 a week ago, seven years late, but they finally did it. It's just an example of CD getting caught up on a lot of old pre-orders. Blockade Billy really helped out with money and lit a fire under CD's butt, CD's on par to put out the most books they've ever done in a single year - about time!

That ad copy is so annoying...

"This is your chance to get in on the ground floor before everybody knows how important the author is!"

Actually, since the entire ad is devoted to telling us just how important the author is, that's not even true!

I don't actually have an issue with the increased print run...it's still in pre-publication so people could always cancel (though they weren't told) if it did bother them.

Yep, that UK slipcased edition sold out in minutes of announcement.

I've been told through the grapevine though that Goldsboro has a tendency to announce books sold out, holds a bunch back and sells them at higher prices on Ebay. If you want one, keep watching Ebay, Goldsboro will be selling some.

I am surprised that nobody has commented on the fact that CD is now buying up King limited editions form other publishers now (probably at a great price), and selling them.

Desperation Gift Edition (Grant)
Talisman Black House Gift Edition (Grant)
The Colorado Kid (PS)

I'm thinking that they have a giant email list from all the Blockade Billy sales and are cashing in on that. Probably have a bunch of new customers now that never even knew these limited editions existed.

Like most businesses right now, the publishing industry is struggling as well. I think what they are doing with the BB list is smart and it doesn't hurt the other publishing companies that are moving books to people that other wise wouldn't have realized the books are out there or how to get them.

On top of that, I just sold a book to a new King collector that purchased a BB from CD. It's excitement like this in the market that at least keeps it moving.

Just my opinion of course.

Yeah, that's true...new customers are good long term.

And, if they're middling deals between themselves and other publishers, that's smart too...it helps everybody move some inventory and everybody's making money.

As long as they use that money to actually produice some books, that is...

In Filipino (Tagalog) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_language) the expression is "pag puti na ang uwak" ("when crows are white").
In German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language) the expression "Wenn Schweine fliegen könnten" is identical with the English version.
In Italian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_language), the expression is "Quando gli asini voleranno" ("when donkeys fly").
In French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language), "Quand les vaches auront des ailes" ("when cows have wings") is sometimes used, but the most common is probably "quand les poules auront des dents" ("when hens grow teeth").
In Spanish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language), the expression is "cuando las vacas vuelen" ("when cows fly"). Other less common variations include "cuando las ranas críen pelo" ("when frogs grow hair") and "cuando San Juan baje el dedo" ("when Saint John (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Apostle) bends his finger"). The latter is a reference to the iconic depictions of St. John with one or two extended fingers.
In Finnish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_language), the expression is "sitten kun lehmät lentävät" ("when cows fly"), or "jos lehmällä olisi siivet, se lentäisi" ("if a cow had wings, it would fly").
In Latvian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvian_language), expressions include "Kad pūcei aste ziedēs" ("when the owl's tail blossoms") and "Kad akmens negrims" ("when rocks don't sink").
in Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language), the expression is "Als Pasen en Pinksteren op één dag vallen" ("when Easter and Pentecost are the same day").
In Malay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_Language), the expression is "Tunggu kucing bertanduk" ("when cats grow horns").
In Malayalam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam_language), the expression is "Veluttha Kaakka Malarnnu Parannaal" ("if the crow flies upside down").
In Sanskrit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit_language), the expression is "अम्बुनि मज्जन्त्यलाबूनि" (ambuni majjantyalābūni) short for "अम्बुनि मज्जन्त्यलाबूनि ग्रावाणः प्लवन्ते" (ambuni majjantyalābūni grāvāṇaḥ plavante) which means, ("[when] in water, cucumber drowns and stones float"). It occurs as early as in Mahabharata (महाभारत), in Sabhaa Parva (सभा पर्व), chapter 66, verse 11 as मज्जन्त्यलाबूनि शिलाः प्लवन्ते.
In some countries in the Persian Gulf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Gulf), the Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic) expression "إذا حجت البقرة على قرونها" means "when the cow goes on pilgrimage on its horns". In Egypt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt), they say "في المشمش", meaning "when apricots bloom". Other Arab people, especially Palestinians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_people), use the expression "لما ينور الملح", which roughly translates into "when salt blossoms", which is futile because salt isn't a plant.
In Bulgarian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_language), the expression is "когато цъфнат налъмите" (kogato cufnat nalumite) ("when shoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patten) bloom").
In Chinese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_language), the expression is "除非天下紅雨" (Chúfēi tiān xià hóng yǔ) - "when the rain is red", or "除非太陽打西邊出來" (Chúfēi tàiyang dǎ xībiān chūlai) - "when the sun rises in the west".
In Persian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language), the expression is "وقت گل نی" ("when reeds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phragmites) blossom").
In Russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language), the expression is "когда рак на горе свистнет" (kogdá rak na goré svístnet) - "when the crawfish whistles on the mountain".
In Serbian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_language) or Croatian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_language), the expression is "kad na vrbi rodi grožđe" ("when grapes grow on a willow").
In Turkish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_Language), the expression is "balık kavağa çıkınca" ("when fish climb poplar trees").
In Ukrainian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_language), the expression is "коли риба заговоре" (koly ryba zagovoré) - "when fish speak".
In Portuguese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_language), the expression is "quando as galinhas tiverem dentes" ("when chickens grow teeth"). Another expression used in Portugal is "No dia de S. Nunca à tarde" ("On St. Never's Day in the afternoon"), meaning that the event being discussed will never happen.
In Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil), a common expression is “Dia 31 de Fevereiro”, meaning "(it will happen) on February 31st", a date that does not exist.
Also in Brazil, a common expression was "quando a cobra fumarGetúlio Vargas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get%C3%BAlio_Vargas), Brazilian president during World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II), to reaffirm Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil)'s neutrality in the conflict: "Snakes will smoke before Brazil enters the war". When Brazil eventually declared war on Nazi Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany) and a contingent of about 25000 Brazilians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Expeditionary_Force) were sent to join Allied forces in the invasion of Italy, the Brazilian force called themselves Cobras Fumantes (literally, Smoking Snakes). They adopted as their symbol a snake smoking a pipe. (http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficheiro:Distintivo_da_FEB.PNG) Since then, the expression has reversed meaning in Brazil, as "a cobra vai fumar!" ("snakes will smoke!") now implies that something is about to happen in a furious and destructive way " ("when snakes smoke"). The phrase was used by
in Swedish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_language), the expression is "två torsdagar i veckan" ("two Thursdays in the same week"). It is also said as "two Sundays in the same week", but other weekdays are rarely used.

Glenn is going to "remarque" and sign the title page of 10 of his PERSONAL copies of The Secretary of Dreams (Volume One) by Stephen King and we're making those copies available to a select group of our collectors on a first come, first served basis. (He's also preselling 10 of his personal copies of Volume Two, each with a unique "remarque" on the title page, and those can also be preordered now.)

What is a remarque? It's essentially an extremely detailed drawing by the artist in one copy of the book, making it 100% unique and different than any other copy in the world. You can proudly tell your collector friends that you have something they don't because even if they also managed to get a remarqued copy, it would be different than yours.

See some amazing samples or place your order through this page while our very limited supplies last:

I'm definitely wanting a Glenn remarque, but I think I'm gonna wait until I get my copy of SOD II and have Glenn do it himself rather than go through CD.

Holy Crap!!!

Just got this as part of an "update" email from CD:

* The Secretary of Dreams (Volume Two) by Stephen King is now rolling at the printer, and we're working with them on the final production schedule for the book. We'll post the official publication date as soon as we have it. We're also working with our slipcase and traycase manufacturer to get them primed and ready to go. They can't start their work until we have a "dummy book" (basically a blank test book that is sized exactly like the real book will be) from the printer for final sizing, but they'll have everything else ready to go before then so there won't be any delay on their end.

They also had pretty much the same update for "Riding the Bullet", as well. Looks like maybe Xmas 2010? God bless the Blockade Billy release!!!!!!!!!
