I posted this in the other thread in The Oracle but this thread is more suitable for the purpose of discussing the collectibility of these books:

I like the cover of the lettered edition (including the fonts) a lot but the gift and signed/numbered editions leave me unimpressed. Still, I'm sure they are fine books and people who buy them will be very happy with them! The don't fit the scope of my collection so I won't be getting a copy.

I am glad to see that there continues to be a market for King collectibles! But for me, artwork and superior production values alone don't justify the purchase of a limited edition. I'm a sucker for deleted scenes, additional chapters, revisions and the like.

Thoughts?

I'm very much looking forward to the cover artwork and design discussion. I'm sure there will be a lot of opinions. What you see is what we felt was best for the book after discussing ideas with everyone involved in the process of making this edition happen, but we know that it won't be for everyone and some people will like it more than others -- or will like certain editions more than others.

I think the artwork fits the "feel" of the book, but everyone has different eyes and will see things based on their own perspective and background. :)

To be fair, CD has handled this preorder much differently by alerting Collector's Club members about it first, then all the members here, and they still haven't made the public announcement, so it's not like everyone in the world knew the preorder was coming at 10am ET today and pounded the site all at the same time.

I like the S/L art the most, then the gift. The font is fine but I think the cover would look better if the title was moved lower in the picture. The b/w illustrations are nice too.

Those used for the Gift Edition are awful, a true word art effort there lol. I see the default price for the gift editions has gone from $75 to $95, with the huge overseas shipping rises the cost of such gift editions has doubled since the last one CD released :(.

I hoping that PS Publishing will stock it so they can eat some of the shipping costs.

So am I Becca and I agree. (You should be more picky, you have the professional experience to back up your opinion!)

I rarely like small press dust jackets because the typography almost always feels amateurish.
The limited is probably the best of the bunch, but the '90s grunge font for the title does take it down a notch. The gift edition is the worst one in my opinion, the standard Photoshop bevel effect on King's name kills me.

I ordered the S/L, but my credit card is going to hate me for a couple of months.

I'm tempted but I promised myself that I would only get SEs for It and The Shining (exceptions if they include additional written content not available elsewhere). Maybe some other books like Let the Right One In if CD were to ever do it.

But the interior art looks really nice.

Excellent work from CD on this today. I'm just relieved I wasn't on holiday abroad for this one like I was when IT was announced!!

This was no fun today! No website crashing, darktower hacking, stress of not forgetting the date of the announcement. I just logged in and ordered the book just like every other book. :(

I need more stress and actions and complaining and.... That is half the fun of collecting SK books. Better luck next time CD.

I was at school when the e-mail went out so missed out on buying a S/L. Oh well. Maybe I'll find one secondhand when its published (and when I actually have money).

Not a fan of the cover art overall, but like the S/L edition art best (and no comic art!).

I just got confirmation from Sub Press that 644 was mine so fingers crossed it's available from CD!

BTW - like I said in the other thread, I like the art for the gift and limited but the fonts don't do anything for me. I'm a graphic designer and maybe that makes me more picky?

So am I Becca and I agree. (You should be more picky, you have the professional experience to back up your opinion!)

I rarely like small press dust jackets because the typography almost always feels amateurish.
The limited is probably the best of the bunch, but the '90s grunge font for the title does take it down a notch. The gift edition is the worst one in my opinion, the standard Photoshop bevel effect on King's name kills me.

I ordered the S/L, but my credit card is going to hate me for a couple of months.

Cemetery Dance always does a wonderful job on their titles. I think their design work is the best in the business. Kate Freeman's layouts are a work of art!

Put all three editions in my basket
Forgot my CD password

Got it - ordered all three states
Back to work in ten minutes or less

We did try to drop a few hints here and there over the last week or so, but there is no perfect way to announce a King signed Limited Edition so that absolutely no one misses out -- unless you're able to publish 1000 or 1250 copies, which would be great. :)

Those who missed out on a signed edition should email Mindy at order@cemeterydance.com ASAP about the waiting list because we're not going to have an official one this time, just an unofficial one she keeps in her email, and there are *always* cancellations. There will probably be a few tomorrow when spouses check the credit card balance online! :)

Sure! I just checked the latest numbers. It's just a little past 75% sold out. Sales will slow down now if past experience is any indication, but based on what I saw for our Gift Edition of Full Dark, No Stars (which was the same print run), this should definitely sell out pre-publication.

We received the then current draft of the manuscript back in August.

To answer the second half of your question, it's absolutely happened where we've signed a contract and paid an advance and then no manuscript ever shows up. Sometimes we'd be told, "it's almost done" and then we'd announce the book, only to have to cancel a bunch of orders years later when it becomes clear the advance is gone and no manuscript is ever going to arrive.

This is one of the many reasons we've stopped announcing books until the manuscript is done. That saves us a lot of headaches in explaining why the book is late and it saves our customers a lot of frustration. :)

Without compromising your relationship with SK or any contractual constraints can you provide any feedback on the manuscript?

I can say I absolutely loved the book. I think a new SK reader could pick up Doctor Sleep and enjoy it immensely, but for fans of The Shining, there are a lot of great moments where you feel the connection really come alive.

King avoids the usual traps of a sequel because he didn't just write the same story over again. (A lesser author would have already taken us back to the Overlook several more times in The Shining 2, The Shining 3, etc.)

Dan Torrance *feels* like an adult who was once Danny Torrance. The personal demons that haunt him are very real -- King puts his first-hand knowledge of alcoholism to great use.

There are so many great parts that could be spoiled if someone tells you too much before you dig in. In fact, I would strongly recommend everyone just put on blinders when it comes to the early reviews and go into the book fresh. Don't let anyone give away the moments that are so perfectly Stephen King that you want to read the book all over again as soon as you turn the last page.

Sorry, I know that isn't a lot of help!

And, *this* is the only really important question in all of this. As prices and editions keep increasing in a "bad" limited edition market, I find myself relieved to worry less and less about the collectibility of any particular book, and more and more about how good the book actually is!

I know this is the wrong forum for such an opinion, but did want to say- Thank you for asking, Ben...

Waiting list maybe?

Mindy is keeping a list of anyone who contacts her, so I would definitely recommend emailing her in case a copy becomes available. We're not doing a formal list through the site because we almost always end up with about 500 people signed up. We usually have less than 5 cancellations for books signed by King, so that seems like overkill. (Plus there are inevitably the people who think joining the Waiting List means they have a copy reserved and then they yell at Mindy when they don't get one.)

Working on this now! All of the software upgrades for the postage rates have caused some other unintended problems like certain mail options just not appearing on certain items. It's been fun! Will post when I have an answer on how to fix it, hopefully it will be soon!

Maybe, maybe not... I'm still trying to get one option fixed! No idea why it isn't loading because everything is configured right, but the system just isn't "seeing" that option.

Drop me a line via email with a list of what you're ordering and I'll check and see what your options "should" be!

Yes! The UNDEAD Lettered Edition will probably be out this fall. Sorry about the long wait on the Lettered Editions. We have a big batch of 30 coming in next month, which will really help us catch-up. We had so many vendor problems on the traycases but we've finally found three companies who really care about doing it right and they're working on our backlog now!

SIMS 5 is with our "regular" traycase maker, the guy we've always used and who did the previous 4 books in the series. (But he can only produce about 10 a year for us, which is why we've had to try out others to catch up.)

SIDES is also one of his and will be definitely finished this year, but he hasn't given us a timeframe yet. He has two others before it, so I'm thinking by summer?

I'll post the list of 30 on our Production Updates page as soon as we get the approval cases for all of them and we confirm they fit their cases okay, which should be around the first week of March!

Sorry for jumping in here on your guys' exchange- but, I can't help but wonder if it's about time we all rethink the whole "traycase" thing. Considering that they (and slipcases to a certain degree as well) seem to be the single thing that holds up production on a book- could it be time to at least consider dropping them? Maybe take that $ and put it into the actual book...?! I remember talking to Bill at Subpress about 15 years ago, and he was fed up with the delays (months at the time) that slipcases were causing his business, and he was going to drop them all together. Which he pretty much did- at least on his "regular" limited editions, and nobody seemed to mind (I thought I would, but as I get older- ahh, who cares?! I'll paraphrase the great Eddie Campbell who once said that slipcases were "just another place for cockroaches and spiders to hide"). Now, all these years later- traycases seem to be holding up books for ...gulp- years! Is it time to think "out of the box" (see what I did there?) on what we want in our limited editions?

Any thoughts?

Ron

I've always liked slipcases over either not having them or tray cases. Our slip cased editions are some of my favorite, with a few exceptions. We just have a huge backlog, and once we get caught up they shouldn't be held up nearly as much. Catching up is the problem, which we are making great strides this year at doing.

On a side note, as awesome as it'll be to catch up, I am not looking forward to shipping 30 lettered editions in March.

I prefer at the very least some sort of slipcase if only to protect the book from wear. I'm a bit ticked that SP didn't include one for NOS4A2--you'd think if you're going to pay over a hundred bucks for a book they'd throw in a cardboard slip to protect it. :arg:

Jimimck

Yeah I agree, gotta have a slipcase for a nice limited edition. CD seem to get asked often which of their slipcased will fit other books not issued with one, so there's a good indication as to what people want... Not to mention the aftermarket ones people snap up for books CD don't even publish.

Hey Dave!

The "Another 2012 Forthcoming Grab Bag" titles are all projected to be out this winter as planned. The only announced title from the Grab Bag is the Shivers 7 limited edition. Thanks for asking! Yes, we'll be using the same printer for Doctor Sleep as we did for IT and the previous couple of Stephen King books.

As to your other question, the general answer is, each book is its own production with different requirements. Sometimes we have several choices for the cover art, sometimes we only have one. We might have several options we think would work, but maybe there is only one option that the author, agent, and everyone else like as much as we do.

My personal preference is to have different artwork for each edition, but I am just one vote in the process. :)

...- Sword in the darkness printed edition.

Great suggestion, Ari.
As I mentioned in a prior post , I submitted a Sword In The Darkness limited edition proposal with some very cool artwork to SK in 2009 that would have donated all profits to the Haven Fund but, not surprisingly, it was turned down. I'm sure the primary reason was that SK doesn't think it is a good novel (probably accurate) but it still has hsitorical/developmental significance and would be of interest to hard core fans.
Brian, feel free to run with the idea! I think the Haven donation offer from a prominent publisher like CD could potentially offset SK's concerns. The excerpt I read in Stephen King Unpublished was very Bachman like and, even with its warts, was an enjoyable read.

If I may ask are the Doctor Sleep covers being produced/printed by the same company that produced the IT 25th Anniv. cover? Also why 3 covers for Doctor Sleep, but only 1 for IT? Thank you for any information you can provide.
I thought IT had a different DJ for each of the three editions...

There where 3 different DJ designs, however the artwork was the same on all 3.
Thanks. The DJ's can be viewed here (http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/PROD/king06); click on the DJ's tab.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but me and the search engine on this site just don't seem to work well together. :)

How many of the trade editions of The Century's best horror fiction were produced? I looked on the site and couldn't find a number there.

We do not post print runs for trade editions unless there's a contractually mandated maximum, which has only happened once. Otherwise, it's usually somewhere between 1000 and 5000 copies.
