View Full Version : DTbay

Matt

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am developing a module for the site called DTbay.

This will obviously allow online auctions that are totally done here on the site.

Its not exactly for right now, but more for as the site develops.

Just FYI :D

Patrick

Sounds interesting, Matt. :)

Cool idea once again Matt.
Do you just lay in bed at night thinking of new things to add to the site or what? :D

Matt
06-27-2007, 03:44 PM

Actually, that's pretty much all I do.

Matt
09-27-2007, 09:36 AM
Okay, I have been watching this modification and it looks like it has been stabilized in the new version.

I try to find stuff that will enrich the experience here and this seems like it could be fun to play with so I am going to stick it on.

Please report problems as usual. :grouphug:

Cool idea Matt:D

Cool! :D

Matt

Okay, I am going to need some volunteers to help me out with this thing, its totally customizable.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Help in what way? You know I'm not much use when it comes to technical stuff - but anything I can do, I will :)

Matt
09-27-2007, 11:34 AM
Its mostly just making sure the thing works correctly for folks.

check this addy out---http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/vbay

I am also going to need ideas on a "disclaimer" on the front page to let people know it is AT YOUR OWN RISK

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 11:36 AM
will we be able to use paypal?

That address takes me to an error message

Matt
09-27-2007, 11:46 AM
Ooops--hold on just a sec.

And yes, you can designate paypal but the actual transaction is handled separately among the users.

Matt
09-27-2007, 11:46 AM
This one should be correct

http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/DTbay.php

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 11:51 AM
Cool - what do you want me to do there?

Matt
09-27-2007, 11:56 AM
Yay!! That is a good start.

Well, I could use some suggestions on an official name for it. I am going to set up a mock sales auction to see if you can bid ok.

Also, we need some verbiage written on what the site will and will not do but I am going to see if I can get Aaron to come up with an outline on that for me.

This is obviously delicate, I don't want people getting fucked in any way so its that kind of stuff. I am going to throw a test auction out there and we'll see if you can bid on it.

Also, I am going to "wrap" it with the CMPS

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:00 PM
You could call it "BeamBay" :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:01 PM
:o

I kind of like that

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:08 PM
There is a test auction out there now :D

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:16 PM
I'll go bid!...

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:19 PM
Thanks Lisa, I really appreciate this.

We're supposed to get PM's and such.

I will need someone to outbid her to test that though

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:19 PM
Couldn't find the auction

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:20 PM
Its in the "books" catagory

Randall Flagg
09-27-2007, 12:21 PM
It won't let me sell.
It asks for a seller account, then gives a vbulletin message.
I did however place a bid of $6 for your book.

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/7415/untitledpw6.jpg

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:22 PM
Thanks Jerome--its actually a hug from me.

Just a test. And the image is gone for some reason

I have to put folks in a special group to be sellers, we're going to do it by request to make sure the place doesn't get spammed up but I do need to test it so I will put you in there.

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:24 PM
No, I mean - the link takes me to .the page that asks you to enter your shipping details, so I did but it took me straight back to that page and so do all the other vbay related links

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:26 PM
Not sure why that is happening.

hmmm, the first time you go in, you have to provide shipping details. When you get back to the main page, you should be able to see some categories there.

You can click on books and then find my auction underneath that one.

Randall Flagg
09-27-2007, 12:26 PM
When you place a bid, you have to enter some (any) info in the blank space about buyer contact info.

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:27 PM
Yeah, the guy that made it is trying to automate that to make it so it pulls from some kind of data profile.

Randall Flagg
09-27-2007, 12:31 PM
I squared it in red:
http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/2876/untitled1xa3.jpg

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:34 PM
And there should be an ad at the top with a pic but the xfloat is fucked up somehow as usual.

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:49 PM
I can't even get to that part you've shown RF. I enter my shipping details but it takes me back to the same spot. Do you think it doesn't recognise the UK address?

Daghain
09-27-2007, 12:50 PM
BeamBay - I like that!

I'll go see if I can outbid Jerome. :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:52 PM
Ah, that may be it, I set it up to only do domestic shipping not even thinking about that Lisa.

I'll set up another test one in a bit because I wanted to test that image problem anyway.

Any other folks to go out and bid on these auctions, I would really appreciate it

You are not buying anything.

Darkthoughts
09-27-2007, 12:53 PM
"If you want to bid away,
Hop along the Beam today!"

Daghain
09-27-2007, 12:55 PM
I now have high bid. :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:56 PM
Woohoo!!

Thanks Daghain--Now I need to see if Jerome got a PM to say that he has been out bid as he should.

Daghain
09-27-2007, 12:57 PM
Yeah, you can totally put a fake address in there if you just want to test. :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 12:59 PM
Its going to be seriously dependent on the honor system. And I plan to use some kind of built in board functions to keep track as a "feedback" system.

Daghain
09-27-2007, 01:02 PM
Well, I would guess if someone abused it, you could mod queue them or something. I just stuck a false one in there to test the system. :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 01:05 PM
That's exactly what I needed to happen, I would love it if the whole thing was tested.

I have to add a code modification to make it send "outbid" pm's so that isn't happening yet.

jhanic
09-27-2007, 02:00 PM
As far as the name goes, I'd stay away from any name with "Bay" in it. eBay has a trademark/copyright on this, and if you come close to their name, I'm sure you'll be hearing from their lawyers.

Maybe DTAuction?

John

Matt
09-27-2007, 02:08 PM
Thanks John--as to that, it actually came up in the mod thread for this at vbulletin.org

The coder said that you cannot copyright the word "bay" so unless you put the "e" in front of it, you are good to go.

With that being said, I love your suggestion for a name because I wouldn't mind staying away from it just on general purposes.

Randall Flagg
09-27-2007, 03:38 PM
Got the Pm about being outbid.

Brice
09-27-2007, 03:51 PM
I certainly hope whoever outbid my $9999999999.99 bid plans to pay up.

Matt
09-27-2007, 04:14 PM
Got the Pm about being outbid.

Sweet!!

And you should be in the sellers group now Jerome. :borg:

Daghain
09-27-2007, 04:51 PM
Brice outbid me! (I got the PM). :D

Matt
09-27-2007, 06:35 PM
Cool, seems like its working well. Aaron said he would whip up some intro text for it.

I kicked around ideas for the name and Dora suggested DTbay--I know, it still has the "bay" in it but I am certain that the above does not infringe on any copyright stuff. :grouphug:

And I think its cool...DTbay---::snicker::

Daghain
09-27-2007, 09:22 PM
I like it. :D

Darkthoughts
09-28-2007, 05:37 AM
Me too, it sounds more specific

Randall Flagg
09-28-2007, 01:09 PM
I put something up for auction, but can't see the auction, or edit the description.

Matt
09-28-2007, 01:52 PM
Editing the description is not a function because the coder did not want people to post something to sell, then change it in the middle of the auction, I thought that made sense. The next release of the modification will include the ability for admin on the site to do it I believe.

I thought I saw your auction under one of the categories Jerome, is it in Artwork?

Randall Flagg
09-28-2007, 09:22 PM
Yes it is in artwork, but I can't "click" on it to see my own auction, let alone change it.
E-bay allows changes as long as there are no bids, and even then with notification. The only preclusion is the last 24 hours of the auction.

Matt
09-29-2007, 06:31 AM
That's very true Jerome and you are right, this thing does lack certain functionalities. The creator of the modification is doing upgrades all the time so its bound to get better.

In the end, its a free modification  I do know there is a different one that is paid (vbplaza, I think) but I wanted to make sure it was something we might use before going that far. This one seems to at least create a platform for the idea.

I can delete that auction that you have set up easily so feel free to create as many as you like to play with it, when we have something "real" out there, we'll make sure its announced on the site.

What a very cool idea...and the payment method is what paypal?

Randall Flagg
09-29-2007, 07:53 AM
Matt, please delete it.
I will post another. It actually was/is an "real" auction. I will accept bids and sell the item.

Matt
09-29-2007, 07:57 AM
What a very cool idea...and the payment method is what paypal?

Thanks alinda--I thought it might be something we could use. The payment method is determined by the seller but its really just a way to keep track of bids. The payment and exchange is all worked out by the parties.

Matt, please delete it.
I will post another. It actually was/is an "real" auction. I will accept bids and sell the item.

Wow! That sounds good. I will delete the last one but remember, they cannot be deleted after the save so play around with a lot in the preview. The image upload is not great imo but you can use the [img] button like a post.

[xfloat] doesn't work either as far as I can tell.

If it gets screwed up, I can just delete again and I don't mind running this one real auction but it will be the only one until we can develop some site rules and guidelines around the thing. :grouphug:

Jerome has an actual auction going out there with an entry under the "artwork" category. Have a look if you are interested.

Any registered user on the site can bid but make sure you don't bid on that auction unless you would like to actually pay for the thing. :D

I am going to put a link on the tool bar for it when we get the bugs worked out but for now you can see the main auction page by going here...

Patrick
10-02-2007, 04:09 PM
I just checked it out, Matt. Cool.

My only suggestion is that since members need to put their shipping address just to view the auction site, there should be a statement on the same page about how that information will or will not be used - preferably just above where you enter the info.

Randall Flagg
10-02-2007, 04:16 PM
Cogent point.

Matt
10-02-2007, 04:39 PM
Great idea Patrick.

Do you guys think a link to our Privacy Policy (http://www.thedarktower.org/privacy) would suffice?

Also--isn't there text above that part that says that the information will only be shared with the seller? I'll have to check that out.

Storyslinger

I don't know about the text, but the link works with me

Matt

Hey Spencer, nice to see you.

I will put you in the group of sellers and we'll see what you have.

For an example of how to do the auction ad, I would look at Randall Flaggs under "artwork"

Patrick
10-03-2007, 09:16 AM
Great idea Patrick.

I didn't see any text, other than the "use this auction site at your own risk" statement. Of course, I can't go double-check because I put in my info and don't see that screen anymore.

I think a simply-worded statement along the lines of (but not exactly): "We won't sell or give this information to anyone except the seller in the case that you win their auction."
Then follow that with a link to the site's privacy policy.

Matt
10-03-2007, 09:33 AM
Sounds good to me, I will add it in there.

The sad part is that it throws that screen up first thing so I am not sure if the disclaimer will show before you add your shipping info.

I will sign on as my dad and see what it says to him.

Spencer
10-04-2007, 07:09 AM
I'll take a look at Randallflagg's ad, and post my listing later tonight. :D

Matt

We have an upgrade to this now that includes a "buy it now" feature, I am going to try and slap it on today.

Storyslinger
10-08-2007, 07:01 AM
Oh, exciting :excited:

Matt
10-08-2007, 11:35 AM
Okay, this is done. There should be a "buy it now" feature out there.

All sellers are still sellers and you may have to put in your mailing info again, it had a time with that. Still looking to solve the issues of editing and foreign zips but it seems to be going along fine otherwise.

Matt
10-13-2007, 01:34 PM
This guy is cranking out upgrades for this thing.

Just put the newest one on and now the seller has the option to edit it. Go to MyDTbay, click auctions and you should have an edit on the far right.

We really need to make sure there is no editing of auctions unless absolutely necessary after they have been posted or long, or certainly after they have been bid on.

Randall Flagg
10-13-2007, 04:27 PM
I could be wrong, but e-bay allows changes (prior to any bids being made) up till 24 hours before auction end. In addition, when changed there is a notice affixed to the sale.

Matt
10-13-2007, 04:28 PM
That sounds like a perfect rule to me. I should place that on the front page of the thing.

Randall Flagg
10-13-2007, 08:03 PM
Yes, you should.
Also, once a bid is made, one can add a comment, but it's separate from the initial description and clarified as such.

Matt
10-14-2007, 11:45 AM
Sounds good, I am also going to throw in the rule that if the auction is edited, the highest bidder needs to be pm'd. The system won't do it automatically so the seller should probably shoot something their way.

I'll add those three provisions to the front page of DTbay

Seller can edit auction up to 24 hrs prior to auction close
Seller will add a comment of the edit on the auction itself
Seller will notify highest bidder through a PM
Seller will separate comments about the edit from the initial description and clarify it as such

Matt
10-16-2007, 11:58 AM
WOOHOO!!

I won Jerome's auction!!

I'll be sending that along soon man

This is not an auction since I'm not really selling the book, but since I'd preffer to have Skeleton Crew S/L, I'd like to know if someone here is willing to trade my Secretary of Dreams S/L (#655 out of #750) for a Skeleton Crew S/L. I'd pay for the difference (as long as it's a reasonable one).
If anyone's interested, please let me know.

Thanks!

Whats the deal with reserve prices? If you bid on and win an item but you haven't met the reserve...what happens?

Nerak
11-11-2007, 08:54 AM
It depends upon the seller..I guess. If they want to sell it to you for that price or stick with the reserve price.

Matt
11-11-2007, 08:59 AM
that's exactly right, real informal for now.

Darkthoughts
11-11-2007, 09:01 AM
Meaning they have the right to chose not to sell for the auction price if they wish?

Matt
11-11-2007, 09:52 AM
Meaning if the original reserve price that the seller indicated is not met. They can choose to sell the item at the lower price.

If they choose to stick by the reserve, that is also their option. I would think selling it for the lower price would be a nice gesture, but isn't required.

Brice
11-11-2007, 09:59 AM
What I never quite understood also on ebay is what is the purpose of a hidden reserve? Why not just start bidding at the minimum price you would accept?

Matt
11-11-2007, 10:45 AM
Its always been a mystery to me as well Brice. I think, classically, it was a way to get a little bit of interest stirred up. Put it on the block, so to speak.

But this one is pretty informal for now. For instance, I have not met the reserve on the book I bid on, but me and Karen have spoken and got it worked out.

I do think it would be a good idea to add this to the little disclaimer on the home page of DTbay along with the idea that if you see a closed auction that didn't sell, you may try to contact the seller.

So thanks for the questions and input you guys.

Daghain
11-11-2007, 12:14 PM
I always just assumed if the reserve was not met, the item would not be sold.

I think it's great the seller has the option to work a "deal" with the high bidder, if he or she wants to.

Maybe if someone is adamant that their reserve be met, they could put that in the item description.

Hello Everyone :nana:

I would like to close DTbay to auctions outside the ones we are doing for the fund raiser until May 19th.

Mostly its because I am setting up a page that shows current charity auctions here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/../index.php?page=charity) and I didn't want non-charity auctions to appear there. Its all or nothing, no way to separate them.

There is one auction going on a great Insomnia book out there now, when its closed, that will be it until May 19th. Thanks so much.

And if you would like information on donating anything to the fund raiser, please give any Director a shout. :grouphug:

I uninstalled and then reinstalled DTbay and I'm hoping the issues will be fixed. Let me know if anyone runs into trouble.

Obviously, all previous auctions are now gone. ><

Hi Guys

As some of you may know I'm having to part with my SK library...hell, my whole library...to cover past debt and lessen the blows of forthcoming debts.

Part of this painful process has to be selling my Constant Reader Sculpture. I purchased one of nineteen hand painted sculptures (one of 250 in total - the others were one colour only). Mine is number 16.

Number ONE is owned by Stephen King.

The original price was around £150 (around $300).

If anyone's interested, let me know (PM me here) and make me an offer.

All the best
Ceri

P.S. If you're not interested in the above, perhaps you'll be more interested in the books I'm selling

I've not sold anything on DTBay yet...but if people would welcome that, I will.

Sorry to hear you're selling your collection, Ceri.

That sculpture is sweet, and I never bought one. Wish I could afford yours, but not right now. Whoever buys it will receive something quite special.

Good luck with everything.
