Seriously, am I the only one addicted to this show? It's awesome! I'd love to hear from others who are into it!

I watched Season One this summer via OnDemand, and have been keeping up with the second season that way, too. I think it's a very interesting show, a window into a strange time: the early 1960s. The way men treat women is just shocking, and the amount these guys drink gives me cirrhosis just watching it. Don Draper is a fascinating character, someone with a hidden past. I think there are only two more episodes left in the season, counting the one from this week that I haven't watched yet.

Hannah and I are huge fans of the show. Never miss it.

It's just so different than the other stuff you find on TV. It's compelling.

I didn't know it was so close to the end of the season, though. It seems like there is still so much that's unresolved.

I feel so bad for Joan after last week. Poor girl--maybe she'll smarten up and lose the cocksucking doctor

I don't get the impression the writer/creator is terribly interested in resolving anything. The whole thing with Peggy's baby is just hanging out there, for example. Thing happen, people go on (or they don't) and nothing is tidy or neat.

True. I keep forgetting that the show tells the story differently than many other TV dramas. AMC did the same thing with Breaking Bad.

I have not been able to get into this show. I acquired the first season and watched an episode here and there, but I just couldnt get into it. It has great acting and pretty good character development. I just need a little more intensity I think. Like Breaking Bad.

I watched the first season but just haven't been able to watch it regularly so I stopped. Its such a good show that I don't want to ruin the experience by watching one episode here and one episode there. I figure I'll just rent season 2 when it comes to video :) But yeah, it the best show on TV at the moment.

Come to think of it, I made a thread about this show when it first started and nobody answered. Fuckers.

Yes! I'm like, "just forgive him already!"

Although her little "bar office" sexy romp with the young dude seemed hot. I like how she went back there and he followed her with "What are you doing back here?" and that seemed to be all he needed to say for them to get it on.

And you totally know Duck is on the verge of an alcoholic meltdown...

Damn, I may have to switch to a Mad Men theme.....

 You had to wait for all of us to catch up to your awesomeness, man.

I love the show. I felt so proud of Peggy when she finally told Pete about the baby.

Bev Vincent

It was a very good finale, and the closing shot was like the end of a stage play, with the lights going dark. As soon as Ducky told Pete his plans about how he was going to force Don to fall in line, I knew what the punch line was going to be.

Peggy sure has come a long way since her first day on the job!

Hannah

Peggy has come a long way. What's the deal with the priest though. I wish he'd leave her alone. Stupid Colin Hanks.

Bev Vincent
10-29-2008, 10:54 AM
A man on a mission, for sure. He knows more about Peggy's situation than he has let on, I suspect.

I'm glad that Don turned away from the call of the ocean, the temptation to chuck it all and start over (again). That young woman (Joy) may have been reading Faulkner, but their circumstances were more like F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I couldn't believe that I had forgotten entirely about Don demanding that he not have a contract until it was brought up in the meeting. A very nice long-term set up.

I am really impressed with the show. It is one of the best character dramas that I have seen.

I didn't even realize there was a thread for this. :)
[makes note to post in here all the time]

And seriously, if Don was a man-whore before, what the hell is he gonna be like now that he's NOT with Bets. :orely:

ROFlash: Mad Men Viewers Richer Than You
Jul. 28, 2010

The other day, EW’s PopWatch informed us that AMC’s hit “Mad Men” has the richest viewers in all of cable: almost half of its audience has an annual household income over $100K.

My theory: Rich people love the escapism of the ’50s and ’60s, when having money really MEANT something, y’know? Like not having to worry about a pre-nup with January Jones while sleeping with a conveyor belt of women as you chain smoked and drank gold.

John Hamm plays an FBI agent in the upcoming Ben Afflect movie The Town, which is based on Chuck Hogan's excellent novel Prince of Thieves. Saw the trailer before Inception and it looked good.

Anyone see the first episode! I see a really nice little trainwreck forming between Don and Bets.

Bev Vincent

Good first episode. The new firm gives the show something different to work with. Roger is still shooting off the quips, though. And Don is getting to redefine himself...again.

Daghain
07-31-2010, 09:49 AM
Yeah, I'm interested to see how all of this is going to pan out.

Lots of interesting stuff, for sure.

I hate Don's new secretary. I don't want running gags anywhere near Mad Men.
Totally deserved the emmy it won again.

Bev Vincent
08-31-2010, 02:23 AM
I think the new secretary is a scream. Hearing her off camera telling the little twerp "I don't work for you!"

I wonder how far they're willing to let Don fall before he rebounds. Talk about the Lost Weekend. It was humiliating to see him pitching ideas for the Life people like he was scrambling for his honor...and then to not remember any of it.

And him telling that girl that his name was Dick. :o
He's really fudging it all up.

It just keeps getting worse and worse for Don. The fact that I feel such deep sympathy for Don (when his actions make him a total Ahole), proves how amazing the writing/acting is in this show.

I just started watching the first season, very cool show.

I was telling Dora about the scene with the little girl and the dry cleaning (plastic) bag over her head. It is so funny how different things were then. And oh man, the smoking!

My girlfriend is a hopeless Mad Men addict, she watches it on Netflix. I do like it some, it's very original, and I like all the smokin' and drinkin'!

Is it just me or is this season getting better? I like that it's going into Don's character a bit more. I hope they continue to do that with the other characters as well.

Ms Blankenship got off some witty, cutting remarks before her unexpected exit from the show. She's an astronaut.

And I can't believe Betty did that in the bar!!

I tried to watch this show when it started and could not get into it.

I have been watching the current season....and I really do not see what all the fanfare is about.

I mean it is ok...but it sure is not Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead.

Bev Vincent
05-09-2013, 02:23 AM
The most recent episode was one of the best yet. It's not a high-adrenaline show most of the time, but I've been enjoying it.

Maybe it was just me....but pay attention to the "coming attraactions" they run at the end of that episode.....they are they worst I have ever seen.

Nothing more than a bunch of say-nothing sound-bites.

I wouldn't base it on the current season. I love the early seasons, but I've been struggling with this one.

One more to go. How low can Don descend and what will be the impact? Just about everyone hates him or is being harmed by him. "You're a monster."

Thoughts on last night's premiere?

Bev Vincent
04-06-2015, 08:19 AM
First thought: I know how to get that wine stain out of the carpet!
Second thought: Meredith is a vastly underappreciated character. I think she's great.
Third thought: Ken got to stick it to the man. Hoo-rah!

I loved the episode's theme about not being able to escape your past, no matter how hard you try.

Also, those mustaches lol.

Bev Vincent
04-06-2015, 08:30 AM
Roger's mustache -- holy cow, I mean, walrus.

Also thematic about dreams coming true or signs that show a person what to do.

tippy4

I felt the last two episodes were disappointing.

My prediction, the unbalanced waitress kills Don Draper in the finale!

tippy4
05-24-2015, 08:57 PM
Well that finale left something to be desired.

Sooooo....Don found inner peace and wrote the famous Coke commercial?

Really no bueno IMO.

Tommy
05-24-2015, 09:13 PM
I think the thing about the Coke add was inspired actually. Here Don has had one of the most meaningful, deep experiences of his life and because he is such an (M)ad man the only thing he can do with it is make an ad. It is a show about Ad Men (and Women) after all. It's a bit cynical but right on the nose for me.

Some of the other storylines were weak, Roger's and Pete's (yeah I'm sure that will work out). I'm glad Peggy found some happiness and Joan's fate is really up in the air, did her business fail or succeed. I'd like to think she succeeded.

It was a bit on the light side for a show with such strong subtext and deeper meanings. I'm not sure how I could have ended it better. Any ideas?

The finale for Mad Men is great. On first watch it does seem a little light, but it's all about change and the show is really about a decade of change and how the characters are all moving on from the decade, some actually, some emotionally, some from the world.

I'd be up for a Sally spinoff because she became a really great video and Kiernan is adorable. I'm not sure what core theme they found have for it though.

One of the great ScreenPrism videos on Mad Men

I'm listening to the DUMA KEY audio at the moment, read by John Slattery (Roger Sterling). He is a terrific reader and has the ideal sardonic voice for Edgar Freemantle.

Mattrick
07-31-2019, 11:53 AM
Oh man, John Slattery read Duma Key? That's enough to put my re-read on hold a third in and restart. Roger Sterling is my favourite character.

And here are the utterly fantastic ScreenPrism videos on Mad Men. Mad Men is my favourite show and these videos only deepened my appreciation for the show. I've watched them all a few times.
