awrighty...you can prob guess where this one is goin...but the other two aren't quite as intriguing...

take a random line from any King story. PLEASE do not do something asinine like using a one or two word line, or use a line that is cross-referenced in other books. have a little couth. i'm gonna start this off with my absolutely FAVORITE King line ever and bet Brice that first edition copy of Thinner I got him 5 years ago that no one but me and him will guess what it's from.

here goes:

That's what a shrink is for, my friends and neighbors; their job is to fuck the mentally disturbed and make them pregnant with sanity.

I halfway hope I am wrong, because I don't want you to lose that book!!!!!

But I do believe it is from Rage.

The Lady of Shadows
09-08-2008, 10:06 PM
ayup. that's rage. and a pretty good description of old don grace, don't you think?

alinda
09-08-2008, 10:12 PM
Brice , you going to take your brothers book? :wtf:

The Lady of Shadows
09-08-2008, 10:20 PM

Adumbros
09-09-2008, 12:13 PM
it IS brice's book. it always WAS his. i was just tryin to win it back. :D

yes, it is Rage. i'm surprised so many recognized such an obscure line.

alinda

 I am so blind, sorry bro, I really misread your post. ><

Ves'Ka Gan
09-09-2008, 03:59 PM
I have been thinking about that story a lot latley since a special ka-sister o' mine got me a 1/3 of The Bachman Books and I got a trade paperback of it in the same day.

Does that mean it's my turn?

"He reached toward the wide-mouthed jar, then pulled his hand back, as if from a furnace that glows with its own deep and jealous heat"

The Lady of Shadows
09-09-2008, 04:39 PM
you know part of me wants to guess so fucking badly right now. but that would be dirty pool since i know you too well and know exactly what book that's from. i can probably even tell you what fucking page it's on.

i'll let it go though. just remember how nice i was to you ves, the next time i stump your ass in another thread!

i'm stumped.

alinda

Bag of Bones?:scared:

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 07:36 AM
nope, Bag of Bones was On a very hot day in August of 1994, my wife told me she was going down to the Derry Rite Aid to pick up a refill on her sinus medicine prescription -- this is the stuff that you can buy over the counter these days, I believe.

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 07:37 AM
it's gotta be a short story. I've got access to every single one of his novels, and none of them are it. and when it comes to the novellas and such, it's a tad bit easier to stump me.

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 10:51 AM
Haha..yeah this is a random line not a first...and it's not Bag of Bones....should I hint?

Brice
09-11-2008, 10:55 AM
Green Mile?

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 11:02 AM
nopedy-doo-da.

Hint: its not what is IN the jar he is afraid of. It is what he might DO with what is in the jar he is afraid of.

The End Of The Whole Mess

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 11:10 AM
Nope.

Second hint: the jar is on his desk.

alinda
09-11-2008, 11:12 AM
Ves? It's not that line when SK tells us he has the heart of a small boy....
in a jar on his desk is it?

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 11:16 AM
Hahaha...no! Good guess though!!

This is from a novel. A better hint would be that the things in the jar are ordinary things..but not to this King character---if he picks one up..........

Better hint? (Practically giving it away) many believe this particular novel was written as sort of a personal nightmare of King's concerning one Mr. Bachman.

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 11:31 AM
oh fuck The Dark Half.

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 11:33 AM
and actually this novel was written DIRECTLY because of the bachman ordeal. Originally, both Misery and Machine Dreams were to be Bachman books. The pseudo was outed just before Misery's publication, altho rumors abound that there are a select few copies bound under the bachman name (rumors i find unfounded). Machine Dreams was incorporated into TDH, which was King's way of basically railing at his revealer that his obfuscation was none of the fucker's business, especially as the asshole only did it to earn himself a fat bonus check.

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 11:33 AM
Yep! I was trying not to say "IT IS PENCILS IN THE JAR!" but I guess with that last bit I might as well have!

And Adumbros--the other half (the darker half???) of the rumor was that King thought he was Bachman while writing Bachman and King all the rest of the time, much like Thad. Although as a creative person ,the idea gives me the heebie geebies, I doubt very much that King thought Richard Bachman was going to unearth himself somewhere and set out to find him!

alinda

:clap:Yes! of course the pencils in the jar. What a great story that was....the sparrows are calling!

Ves'Ka Gan

It happens to be my favorite, and I also happen to be doing a reread currently. I couldn't resist!

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 11:46 AM
i didn't need the "better hint". didn't even notice it at first go. but anyways...

Psychotics, rocked in the poison cradles of their own egos, want to do everybody handy a favor and take them along.

Ves'Ka Gan

Give me five...maybe ten minutes....

if you're a writer, then you know how ridiculous that sounds. you do indeed feel as though you are merely a controlled vessel for a god to channel the machine. personally, i can barely do longhand anymore; the sight of my own handwriting repulses me. however, give me a computer, or typewriter, and suddenly, another creature comes into being, one more intelligent, more articulate, better educated, hell, even sexier. Albeit not in a clinical sense, perhaps, writers are still perpetuators of multiple-personality syndrome.

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 12:07 PM
and i do, in fact, have a name for the "other."

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 12:08 PM
I think it sounds incredibly ridiculous to beleive that Bachman would unearth himself and come looking for King.

And I am a writer, thank you.

As for your random line ,I cna't be sure, because I have too much of a headache to go page by page to make certain--but that has GOT to be Paul Sheldon...so Misery?

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 12:18 PM
it's not a quote, per se, but yes, Misery. pg. 160 to be exact.

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 12:27 PM
I love that King quote. I've used one similar for years. "I love children," I say, "I just couldn't eat a whole one."

Also: I like my women like I like my coffee; ground up and in the freezer.

Ah crap....winning loses its flavor when I realize I have to come up with another one!!!!

(And yeah, I knew it wasn't a quote, but one of his little interior monologue type things. I tried to check it to be sure and gave up when I realized the ones I Was seeing were too similar to the one you posted & it had to be right!).

Okay next random line from nowhere:

"Whatever was wrong with her had advanced during the night, and her appearance was bad enough to cut through his daze like a sharp knife".

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 01:30 PM
Ooh that's a good one...it rings a bell but I am not sure if it's only because I am thinking of the "single serving friends" in Fight Club...::goes to sort through library::

Adumbros
09-11-2008, 01:33 PM
you won't find it easily Ves. That I promise you.

Ves'Ka Gan
09-11-2008, 01:41 PM
Okay, I cheated, but I've got it. The familiarity of it would drive me crazy if I didn't look it up.

I'll sit back & let someone else guess since I went about it the easy way.

Haha! See! That's why I wanted to wait!! I'll pass the feather (or whatever we're passing in here) to you, Alinda--I think you deserve it more than I do, plus I can't spend as much time in here to day I have work to do and no headache/allergy problems to blame for not doing it today!.

09-12-2008, 07:46 AM
Oh, great game! I had been thinking of something along these lines, but figured there was already one out there somewhere. I've just been too lazy to look. Count me in!

Do you think we should have a spoiler tag on the thread name just so we don't have to worry about what we post? Just a thought.

Donna

I can get someone to add a possible spoilers tag to the title. :)

Adumbros

Hello? I am at work at the hospital untill Sunday evening around 723 pm.
I too need to pass the feather, as I would blurp it bad if I tried to list a line

The woman stopped and turned around, clearly confused. She shot suspicious glances about her, trying to indentify who had spoken. Her aura was a dark, buttery yellow with faint tints of orange spoking out from in its inner edges.
